At the same time, the very idea of religion would be made a complete laughingstock, and thus something nobody would want any part in to begin with. By doing so, the Emperor would starve out the Chaos gods until they were too weak to affect the material plane in any meaningful way. It was certainly helpful, as well, that despite what the man in the video said, The Omnissiah is the Emperor, who is the physical avatar of the Machine God, in the sense that christians beleive that Jesus "is" God, but is also something seperate. The Grey Knights are Chapter 666 of the Space Marines. They wear not the Rosette of the Inquisition, but the mark of Malcador the Sigilite/the Hero, the Imperial Regent. They work very closely with the Ordo Maleus out of convenience.
They are also one of three groups that are members of The Talons of the Emperor, so like a Custode or Oblivion Knight, they technically have the Authority to order anyone within the imperium including the primarchs, although one of the virtues cultivated by a Grey Knight is their own humility, so outside of their own chapter will rarely actually use their rank as members of The Golden Throne. Conversely an Oblivion Knight of the SoS wont give orders typically because shes, kinda just trained not to take full command. Their training subordinates them in battle to the Custodes and their officers, and their organization rarely consolidates sufficiently that their direct superiors arent reporting to the Ordo Hereticus Inquisitors working for the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, in the combined, general duties of the order of the Sisters of Silence as the guards of the blackships. The blackships which travel from world to world kidnapping psykers.
Which leads to the interesting situation where an SoS, who has unlimited legal rights within the Imperium, takes orders from the Inquisitor, who has only the finite sanction for policing of the imperium, takes their orders from a psyker in the astra telepathica, a person who is quite literally a slave with no freedom to move within the economy of the imperium.
Also, Castellan Crowe is a little more badass then Bricky conveys in that video. The Black Blade isnt just a regular daemon blade. When its not in his possession its been identified to have corrupted Greater Daemons into its service, and anyone else in the universe would be corrupted by it within a mortal lifetime. the Kinebrach smith who bound the weapon, bound an entire chaos god. the sum-total of its daemonic hordes into the blade. And he uses it as a bog standard, no special rules Sword. no powerfield, no psychic resonance, no monofilament edge. Castellan Crowe, when he gets off titan because they allowed him to leave his room, is literally swinging a Mideval quality longsword as exactly what it is, despite the chaos god bound within.

To understand the Mechanicus, remember that many of the things mankind used to use during the Dark Age of Technology used sentient AIs. The "Ghost in the machine" is a very real concept to them, and they can and will kill Mechanicus goons who are not careful. Also remember that a lot of human tech from the DAOT is both incredibly overpowered (since mankind was incredibly advanced back then) and has been through both the Age of Strife (5000 years of neglect and infighting) and the Horus Heresy (where part of the Mechanicus joined Horus and fought against the other). Kill programs and such, alongside chaotic taint and unhappy ancient AIs make for a very hazardous working environment through which the Mechanicus has to sift through and hope to see the light of day.

To your question about why the mechanicus see the mechanics have lost their scientific understanding of the issue:
During the Age of Strife, when Mars and the rest of the planets were isolated from each other by violent warp storms, the thermoformed Mars went into complete anarchy, like the Earth. Mutants, radiation and techno barbarians swept the entire surface of the planet, all infrastructure was reduced to ashes. Some of the people, however, still managed to hide in giant underground shelters, the work of which was supported by technicians, and the health of the colonists by scientists and doctors.
The era of discord lasted about five thousand years, during this time the cars began to break down, but there was practically no opportunity to repair them - everything was destroyed, many who knew how to repair the mechanisms were either killed or went crazy.
Plus, even before the ege of strife, humans had Men of Iron in their servants - terminators who were tired of serving bags of bones. And they rebelled against the masters.
For your better understanding of this catastrophe, some planets, including Mars, have relied entirely on the Men of Iron for their military, or Army. So there was practically no one there who could offer them any resistance. During this time, the iron people killed many colonists and destroyed all the data centers that stored the technologies of Mankind.
And just imagine, you have been sitting underground for about five thousand years, praying to the ancient, already falling apart air filtration system and the "technician" who try to fixes it, although he himself does not fully understand how it works.
Pray because this is the only thing you can do in this situation.

In fact, the Martians already had their own Empire when the Emperor united the Earth under his banner. And he formed an alliance with the tech-priests, they built a great war fleet for him, and the Emperor, in return, vowed to defend their faith and their forge worlds. When the Mechanicus conquered Mars, they sent fleets of explorators to the stars in order to understand what happened to people, some of them flew and founded new forge worlds, some died. Since the stream of navigators - special people-mutants able to navigate the warp - they had very few, they traveled "blindly". And when the emperor came, he gave them 6 Navigator Houses for interstellar travel. Thus was the great union of Holy Mars and Holy Terra formed - the Imperium of Man was founded. There is also a story that when the Emperor descended to Mars, he met a broken Imperial Knight - a giant humonoid mech and his pilot. The Emperor touched the injured knee of the machine and said, "Machine, heal yourself!" and ... it was repaired in the blink of an eye, the pilot even felt as if all of the Knight's systems were fully restored, not just the knee. The Grey Knights ARE a specific chapter; but much like the Deathwatch they are much more specialized of a chapter to where just as Bricky said, they are meant for hunting the absolute worst daemonic entities of the Warp. They were originally first put into development during the final days of the Horus Heresy by the Emperors most closest confidant Malcador the Sigilite who is also the one who began to form what would become what we know now as the Imperial Inquisition where before Horus entered the Sol System, Malcador used his psychic abilities to hide what would be the chapters homeworld of Titan (aka one of the moons in our solar system) in the Warp to give the chapter time to organize and train up its members and they first manifested shortly after the Heresy, meeting with the Inquisition or more specifically the Ordo Malleus becoming its militant arm. Now while the Grey Knights are their own independent autonomous unit they can be strong-armed into cooperating with the Inquisition into doing certain things; one of which was the First War for Armageddon where they were among the forces ordered to round up the surviving civilians and guardsmen to be purged or sterilized and thrown into labor camps. This led to the Months of Shame against the Space Wolves chapter which is considered one of the darkest and most humiliating periods of the Grey Knights history as they were being forced by a Lord Inquisitor to help bring the Space Wolves 'to heel', only for the Grey Knights to give up their secrecy to the Space Wolves as; yeah the chapter does have a BRUTAL scorched earth policy where they'll either target survivors who know of their existence or in some cases they will wipe the memories from the minds of anyone they fight alongside about what happened.
The Deathwatch are the opposite where they take the specialists and veterans of all of the Space Marine chapters in the Imperium and have them work in combined squads carrying out special operations missions against various xenos races or against the major xenos factions in the galaxy. Now occasionally the Deathwatch will cross into encountering Chaos but normally the Deathwatch will carry out missions against the alien factions and in many cases; invent newer methods of combat against said factions such as developing a new ammunition against the Tyranids or taking samples of xenos technology and studying or even in some cases reverse engineering them for use within the Deathwatch.

Actually the machine spirits are based on the fact that stc’s (which their technology is based on) is some form of ai and actually all technology the that the imperium uses has some kind of low level intelligence, proportional to its size and function. There are even instances of power armor fighting on with an animalistic fury for a short time after the occupant has died, and independent actions like these are common in Titans, where the pilots must mind link with a machine spirit to feel like they are one with the titan and drive it, and the spirit is so powerful it’s very taxing on the pilot and it’s been said they more of just guide the bound spirit where to unleash its fury.
So it’s more like limited ai and human ai slave hybrids and stuff are ok, just as long as it’s not free or too smart, because then it’s its own faction and might revolt, like in the closing days of the golden age of technology.

Mechanicus wise, as with everything in 40k, it’s complicated. The mechanicus has multiple factions in it. Some believe emperor is the omnisiah, others that he’s not but merely the human who came closest to the perfection of the omnisiah either bodily( there are magos biologists who aim for biological perfection as organisms being machines themselves or that they should enhance themselves without losing humans form) and others that neither exists and try to make daemon machines or understand alien tech etc.
As for why tech is regressing in 40k imagine modern day if one day the internet and electricity just goes away and how many people in modern times have any idea how to build even simple machines from the ground up. That’s pretty much 40k. Golden age humanity advanced to pretty much Star Trek levels with almost replicator tech that they relied on for building pretty much anything. regarding the adeptus mechanicus (ad mech): they do have scientific method and explore the galaxy for ancient technology from the golden age, they are basically this renaissance group. The issue is regarding their dogma and political conflicts inside their church. They have dumb dogmas like "knowledge already exist", so they get more of their time searching for ancient technology than actually doing research (which they do). And regarding politics, they compite with each other and stagger the process of each other in their researchs, or they stagger their own research to fly low, specially because they are quick to hunt down whoever seems to be crossing to heretical territorie. But then again, just like with the imperial faith, there are radicals in their groups, an example is Cawl (mentioned in the video) who has made the most innovation and progress in the imperium but he is highly disliked by other members and he is only getting away with it because of his rank and having revived gurlyman.

There are a few things that you might want to know about the mechanicus. 1. The mechanicus pre-horus heresy was known as the mechanicum (remember that for later). 2. The emperor didn't want to fight the mechanicum during the great crusade because it was basically mutual destruction of both the imperium and mars, so they forged a treaty; they work with the imperium, and they will have planetary and religious autonomy from the imperium. 3. The adeptus mechanicus was formed after the heresy because they also had a schism on Mars, and the rebels formed the Dark Mechanicum. FYI: the reason mechanicus don't use tech from advanced xenos tech is because due to their teachings, they believe xenos tech to be a perversion to the machine spirit and machine god.

    • @dr.cobalt8623
      @dr.cobalt8623 3 роки тому

2 more things: the omnissiah is different than the machine god; the omnissiah is for the mechanicus, the emperor and the machine god is... well, the machine god. And lastly, the mechanicus is the worst faction when is comes to dark futures, as they only care about knowledge, absolutely above everything, even human life. To tell you how much they covet knowledge and STCs (I quite frankly do not want to make this an essay to read so I will save you from THAT can of worms) when two average guardsmen found a portion of an STC, the mechanicus confiscated it and gave the 2 guardsmen their own individual paradise worlds. By themselves. That's the power of the mechanicus and religious fervor that they have for finding new tech from the dark age of technology.

To answer some of your questions in the video
Machine Spirit - yes, it exists, but it's not like there are no actual repairs done in W40k. They are simply followed by certain rituals and procedures to appease the Machine Spirit. Degree of such measures mostly depend on complexity of the system. Short prayer after cleaning or fixing your lasgun is enough, but maintenance/repairs of an Imperial Titan require hours of chants and rituals following the technical work. Machine Spirit often can influence the performance of the device or vehicle, to a different degree. In rare cases, in some of more ancient and complex machines combined with certain circumstances Machine Spirit is able to go almost full AI (there is mention in lore about Space Marine Land Raider tank which kept fighting autonomously after all its crew had been killed).
Computers and AI - it's not like Imperium is in 1950-s in terms of computer technology. First of all, there are computers (called cogitators), and they could be sometimes advanced even by modern real-world standards. They are run by Machine Spirits as well. You may ask if there is a Machine Spirit, then what is the problem with AI? Well, what is strictly forbidden in Imperium is self-learning, sentient AI ("I, Robot"/"Terminator" level of AI, for example). On the other hand, cybernetization is a BIG thing in W40k. As you mentioned correctly, most of the Mechanicus believe in transhumanism and they seek perfection in turning themselves into as much of the machine as possible. Those at the top of the chain in Mechanicus often barely have any human organs left in them.
Cybernetic enhancement is very common among non-mechanicus as well. From crude arm/leg prosthesis, to the increase of memory and calculaton capabilities, hightened senses, toughened skin or increased strength. Also the very common practice is to use servitors - mindless cyborgs, generally made of traitors, criminals and heretics through the extensive cybernetic physical surgery and psychological programming, which are used for different tasks throughout the Imperium (hard labour, calculations, services, combat etc.). They even make drones from the skulls. And although these are basically robots (with no free will though), since they are still part human and thus not forbidden to make and use.
Science - there actually are technological developments in the Imperium, but they are severely hampered by 1) religious superstition 2) bureaucracy 3) conservatism 4) bad examples of Techpriests going traitors or heretics due to the desire to explore and develop (Chaos and some Xenos give a lot of possibilities in that field) 5) sheer size of the Imperium 6) monopoly on technological knowledge by single organization. You mentioned the real-life technological progress in Europe, but if we look at Middle ages American natives, China, Japan, there were periods of hundreds and hundreds of years with very little technological improvement. Also golden era of technology had long passed (with a bit of revival in an era of the Great Crusade, before the start of the Horus Heresy) and Mechanicus are still often hunt for the lost pieces of knowledge from that era.
Adepta Sororitas - actually, there are few branches of them. Those that are played on the table are Orders Militant - Sisters of Battle. There are three other main groups within the Sororitas - Orders Hospitalier (medical treatment), Famulous (counselors, tutors and diplomats for the nobility of the Imperium) and Dialogos (scholars and interpreters). Though these groups also recieve combat training, it isn't their main function. As for being "private army" - well, different branches of the Imperium are often at odds with each other, and Sisters of Battle could be called by the Ecclesiarchy if their dispute with local authorities, Imperial guard command or even Astartes becomes too heated. Actually some Battle Sisters strongly hate and despise Astartes, considering them mutant abominations.
Grey Knights - yes, this is special chapter of Space Marines, which serves under Ordo Malleus - department of Inquisition which is responsible for fighting threats from the Warp. They are considered the military arm of this department and when Inquisitor finds the threat of the Daemonic incursion, he calls for their aid, since they are specifically selected and prepared to fight Daemons. Though due to having best weapons produced by mankind; rigorous mental and physical training evem by Astartes standards,;geneseed from Emperor himself, which makes them uncorruptable; and every Grey Knight being a powerful psyker in Imperium they could only be matched by Custodes in they combat capabilities.

So how did the emperor get sold on AdMechs:
Right after he unified Terra the fleet of Mars attacked his empire. Because they were used to raid Terra for tech and didn't like it getting unfucked by the Emperor. Unfortunatelly for them Emperor already get his space marines. So he used them to board most of AM fleet. He then parked his fleet on Marian orbit and issued "join or die" ultimatum to them. Except only Martian leatership knew about the space battle for Terra and the ultimatum, so when they surrendered they fed the rest of AM a tale that Emperror is a prophet of Omnissia who will lead them to greatness.
Emperror could have tried to root out AM religion, but it woud require him to invade mars and proably destroy mot of it's factories. And he needed those to power his galactic crusade. So he kind of accepted the "prophet of Omnissiah" story and rolled with it.

I like to imagine that the Adeptus Mechanicus rituals are largely just normal maintenance, but transformed over generations of technological and societal degradation into spiritual acts without anyone fully understanding why this helps.
"Thou shalt firstly apply firm pressure to the signet of the omnissiah located on the southmost face of the holy machine, until the machine spirit resounds with a mighty click, then, thou shalt wait 5 minutes as the machine spirit rests it's weary soul, while chanting the sacred phrases. once this blessed time has elapsed, depress the same signet again, and lo, the machine will roar it's approval." something like that

Machine Spirits, from my understanding, are artificial intelligences that function at an animalistic or instinctual level of intelligence. They have personalities, and can influence their operators, and sometimes even act completely on their own, but they're not completely self aware in a true sense. Truly self aware artificial intelligences are heretekal because they can quite easily either get corrupted by Chaos, or they view Chaos as such an extreme threat that the only way to truly destroy it is to destroy all life.
Most imperial tech is treated almost like an animal in writing. Titans and Knights have instinctual personalities thar influence their pilots, and it takes a specific personality in the pilot to influence it in turn.

@@CombatVeteranReacts AI in this context is considered sentient, capable of learning and progressing with self determination, they rose up against humans after chaos infested their AI and nearly wiped out the population of 'humans' on Mars, it was for this reason this such AI was outlawed, so chaos could not infest Human technology again.
Machine spirit on the other hand is like a remnant personality complete with moods and desires but only of its task and lacks the intelligence of self learning or any outward thought, you control the spirit(different for each machine) with various rituals and procedures to bring about the determination you require of that machine via uplink with an interface, you can then meld your thought with the spirit to perform the task required. An example would be performing calming rituals on a titan to increase focus and improve functionality and effectiveness of that titan because without it the spirit would have a cold animal like nature to it, obviously it would be bad if a titan became a bit enraged during battle and blew up your army into a crater via aggressive malfunction of 1 of its systems, kind of the opposite of hitting your tv back in the analogue days lol

To clarify, Servitors and other machinery created using parts of the human brain as a CPU are not Machine Spirits. A Machine Spirit is either a rudimentary AI in the machine that handles its operations, or a legitimately supernatural entity that either resides in or affects the machine's performance.
To demonstrate, a gun with no advanced programming of any sort possesses a Machine Spirit. Ordinarily, simple routine maintenance of the weapon itself will appease it, but the Machine Spirit may become upset if you do not occasionally perform certain rites, such as offering a prayer or lighting incense if you disassemble and reassemble the gun. When this happens, regardless of the condition of the gun, it can misbehave in various ways, such as jamming, continuing to fire after letting go of the trigger, firing by itself, missing shots, or just spontaneously exploding.
By our reckoning, these would just be excuses or simple bad luck, and the rituals are just a way to explain to the illiterate masses why they need to perform maintenance, and there is some truth to that assertion, but in Warhammer, these superstitious beliefs have more merit.
Case in point, Space Marine Land Raiders are known to have very active Machine Spirits. The Black Templars often report that their Land Raiders will drive off by themselves and engage the enemy whilst the Templars are in the middle of pre-battle prayers. In another case, a Land Raider continued to fight on against a mob of Orks after its crew had been killed. When its guns inevitably ran out of ammo, it continued to run over Orks until it ran out of fuel, then it threw open its doors and allowed the Orks to swarm on it before detonating its own engines and self-destructing.
This would make you think that the Land Raider is simply an advanced piece of machinery with an AI in it. However, while the Land Raider does have some automated systems, none of these systems should be physically capable of operating without manual input from a human crew; the guns should not be able to move, target, or fire without an operator, the vehicle should not be able to move without a driver at the controls, the doors should not be able to open and close by themselves and often lack any kind of electronic device that would allow them to be opened remotely, and the engine should not have any kind of built-in self destruct mechanism. All of these details support the existence of some supernatural element to machinery in Warhammer, which is colloquially referred to as the Machine Spirit. The Machine Spirit is not actually the Machine God or Omnissiah, but it is generally regarded that the Machine Spirit is an extension of the Omnissiah's will that exists within the machine and allows it to function.
This is of course a gross simplification, but it essentially boils down to 'it's techno-magic, so just roll with it'.

As for your question about what the machine spirits/Omnisiah are, there are a few theories about what it really is. It’s known to actually exist, such as old tech activating itself in strange ways. It’s possible that the machine spirits are actually AI, but the imperium is so far removed from AI that is not necessarily recognized as such. Humanity’s technology used to be far more advanced than it is in the 41st millennium. That being said, there is a much more complicated theory that there are videos on but it would be a lot to try to explain in a comment. That being that the machine spirits are a form of AI related to a C’tan (star god, like I said it’s complicated) fragment.

The Machine Spirit is a mix. In some cases it is literally a brain in a box. This applies to Land Raider tanks in particular.
In other cases, it's used to explain 'ghosts in the machine'. Your car won't start in the morning? It's Machine Spirit hasn't awoken properly. Your toaster burns the toast? It's Machine Spirit has a fiery temprament...
In Titans, the Machine Spirit is it's actual temper. It is 'haunted' by it's previous Princeps' (main pilots) and all of the consciousnesses (is that a word?) of these previous Princeps' form a single personality in the Titan.

to answer your question about mechanicus: any kind of machines (even the simplest ones like a bicycle) has a will of its own. at the time of 40k, the machines' minds aren't made or meant to be deep. because any will is corruptible, although machines are tougher to corrupt, that is why A.I. are banned in the first place, and replaced by mindwiped slaves.
    but picture this:
a spaceship has a mind similar to a dog's mind. you have to care for it. you have to heal it. you have to mend its wounds be them spiritual or physical. if you do not, if you neglect it and abuse it for too long, that spaceship, just like a dog, will bite you in the end.
so, you care for your ship. refuel it as soon as possible, repair it as soon as it's damaged. a mechanicus adept has to tend it, oil it and "ask for its help" (praying to it) before battle or use. because if you do not do that, if you just ignore the machine's will, that machine will fall to chaos.

  • @austindow9850

Some things I wanted to point out. The Emperor, upon arriving on Mars after conquering Earth saw how powerful the Mechanicus (known then as the Mechanicum) was and decided that instead of weakening himself through conflict with them, which he would have won, it was easier to just let them continue their worship under his rule. Which was relatively easy considering they believed him to be the Omnissiah, who's not the Machine-God, but it's Messiah. As for human brains being machine-spirits, not exactly. A machine-spirit is essentially an ai that is too simple to be a true intelligence. Where an ai may act like a human, a machine-spirit (depending on the machine) will act like an animal. Something like a lasgun will be extremely simple to placate, just give it a quick prayer and some oil and you're good to go. A Titan is described as a leviathan in both it's size and it's machine-spirit. As for the stagnation, it's because they'll wipe out everything they suspect of tech heresy, which they include inventing as. Because of the unchecked progress of the Golden Age of Humanity, mankind was almost made extinct by it's creations and to prevent that from happening again, progress must be checked. That's also why the Imperium uses servitors instead of ai, because the machine is fused with a lobotomized human, it can't be an ai.
With the Sororitas, they are most definitely a force of the Ecclesiarchy, not a force of the Imperium under them. Bricky is right in that they are nuns of the Ecclesiarchy, they do everything nuns do now. Lead prayer, provide charity, etc. There's dozens of different orders with specific callings, like translation of both human languages and even xeno languages, running hospitals in places ravaged by plague or war, etc. The Battle orders, the Sisters of Battle, are actually kind of in the minority of the Sororitas. Any planet that's under the Ecclesiarchy, is a shrine world, a home of a saint, etc, you'll find a convent of Sororitas.

The Inquisition and Grey Knights are similarly vested with power, carrying the authority of the Emperors Regent. Unrelated to 40k, but directly related to your comments about the Swiss Gaurd.
The Swiss Gaurd came into being in the late 1400's, early 1500's, originally as a group of Swiss Pikemen. The Swiss Pikes were mercenary units hired out to various nobles etc and were considered some of the best troops avaliable at the time. A unit of Swiss Pikes were in the employ of the Vatican at the time that Vatican Ciry was besieged by an army of German Landschkenict (please don't judge my horrible spelling there) mercenaries. The German mercs had suffered heavy losses crossing the Alps in inclinate weather, primarily their supply trains. Finding themselves without their supplies and too far away from the German Principalities for resupply, the laid seige to the Vatican. The seige lasted six months and the killing was so brutal that record say that it was possible to walk from the edge of the city to the Vatican proper without touching a cobblestone, if you only walked on the dead. By the time the seige lifted, the mercenary Swiss Pikemen were the only military unit in the employ of the Vatican still fighting and even then, they had withdrawn to the Pope's palace and focused the entirety of their efforts on preserving his life. In response, a Papal Bull was issued stating that all further Pope's hence forth would retain the services of a gaurd comprised entirely of Swiss Pikemen, hence the creation of the Swiss Gaurd and the mandate that all members must be of Swiss descent. Further, in modern terms, as I understand it, they must have completed a specified number of years of military service, be unmarried and Catholic.

As far as I understand is that it's a bit like with the Orks. Enough people believe it is true, so it becomes true.
Nobody outside the Adeptus Mechanicus (will shorten to AM) has any idea how a lasgun, or plasma reactor works. And those that do are hereteks. So the AM has pretty much an absolute monopoly on manufacture and repair of technology and the rest of the imperium has a superstitious fear of technology in general, especially the ones lower on the hierachical pecking order.
    As for the magic/spirit part:
First of all, the AM has spent millenia and let superstition, fear, rote memory on how to do things and Actual understanding of technology bleed into each other. That leads to some funny conundrums and questions... A tech-priest for instance can, with the wave of a hand, unjam one or more malfunctioning las rifles of a guardsmen squad.
But said tech-priest is also full of tech himself, the hand he waves might not be his original hand at all anymore. So he might just be instinctively doing what was taught to him as sacred ritual which actually just is how the implants in his arms activate their shennanigans.
But 40K is FULL of stories of tech-priest doing things that should just not have worked using strictly tech-sci-fi logic. And that is what Bricky means with "they have a point because it is obviously working"... and human technology has a sort of life of it's own too. Some voidships that spent thousand years in wars and survived might aquire "ticks" in their machine spirit such as being super paranoid and actually starting the loading process for the macro-cannon broadsides the moment the auspex detects an unknown vessel. Things like that actually happen.
When the machine spirit is willing your gun works. When the machine spirit is insulted (by poor treatment, letting the rifle lie in the dirt, not doing the Rite of Maintenance regularly) it will jam more often or just not work at all. If the machine spirit is roused and enraged your las-gun does more damage.
My guess is that is a mixture of rote rituals as well as the constant, millenia long faith of the AM into the Omnissiah actually changing how tech works, through faith.
Since faith actually does stuff in 40K.
To me, personally, faith in 40K is just latent use of psychic potential all sentient species have that are connected to the warp. Psykers are strong enough to do stuff on their own while the rest of humanity has to have certain shared beliefs and triggers that enable what are, for all intents and purposes, literal miracles.
Usually that is faith in the God-Emperor.
But faith in the Omnissiah is something that also is practiced on every imperial world and by untold billions. So naturally it has to have some effect at least too.

  • @Epsi743

Machine spirits are separate from the lobotomized brains they put in some things. While not all machines will have a human brain within them they are all believed to hold a machine spirit. More complex and powerful machines tend to have stronger spirits (which might be ai it’s unclear) that can sometimes act out on their own without or against the will of their users.
Also the emperor decided not to conquer them since they would be too costly to defeat (especially since the only other world in the imperium at the time was earth) and they would be far more useful and effective as willing allies.
Also with the tech stagnation there’s a different reason. Humanity in this universe actually became much more advanced than they are in the 41st milenium. But something called the age of strife (which is a long story) caused technology to regress immensely. As kind of a response to this the adeptus mechanicus has the main belief that all technology already exists and just needs to be found again. So one of their main goals is always finding old tech that exceeds their own. Even in the year 40,000 humanity is pathetically weak compared to their prime. Even some of the imperium’s best current equipment was originally meant for mining, farming, and labor before.

Grey Knights are made in response to the Horus Heresy, as a Special Forces dedicated to fight Chaos and prevent another incident of that scale. They are essentially the militant arms of the Inquisition branch that focus on dealing with Daemons. (The Inquisition have many branches, the big three being Alien hunters, Heretic hunters, and Daemon hunters being the oldest).
Grey Knights are pretty much one of the main part of the Inquisition's Founding. And while other Space Marine Chapters get their gene-seeds / genetic enhancements from their Primach (Emperor's sons), the Grey Knights get the genetic of the Emperor himself.
As they are part of the "secret police," most of the Imperium doesn't even know they exist (outside the Inquisition and the highest ranks people). So if Space Marines are the elite soldiers of the army, then Grey Knights is something like the super agents in movies where they act like a one-man-army and beat up the villains. Essentially, you need to sing in high gothic while making an oil change because the first guy who made that tank work sung in high gothic (maybe because he feared that the machine might explode or something and wanted to distract himself and if he dies at least die being a good emperor-believing techpriest) while changing its oil.
It had that misinterpreted technological understanding that we can see in Cargo Cults for example - but which kinda worked because it hit enough of the actual helpful stuff along with it that a basic level of maintenance was reached.
Machine spirits were a lot more along the lines of not actual A.I. but rather highly sophisticated coding. Basically what would happen if you asked an A.I. to write a perfect piece of tank code that would include every possible situation the tank would ever be in.
