    What I love is that the Astartes do actually take time to consider their actions but they're on an almost instinctive level. When they encounter the ambush gunners the first marine runs past, the second determines the caliber by sound and angles his shoulder plate to deflect it as he passes and the third marine holds position until the fourth can flank the gunners and take them out. The marine in the corridor cross section also shows awareness by sound as he hears the lone suicide bomber running up behind him, or more precisely he hears the krak charge that he was holding (most people miss it and assume it to be a helmet that the rebel drops, it's more akin to a limpet mine) before smoothly knifing him. The marine that faces the multi-laser does this as well, he understands he has reasonable protection against it's fire (another reason why the rebel infantry were just running away, they know that their lasguns can't do enough damage to the space marine's power armor to down him before he kills them all so they were simply running for their lives) but realizes that his bolter will not penerate the weapon's armor plate so he ducks back into cover as his armor starts to take minor damage, pops a flash grenade and then takes it out with a precise application of a plasma weapon. That's the kind of tactical awareness you rarely see in any media that protrays the marines, and Astartes gets it perfectly.

    40k is also just weird, tactically. It's a warfare theater where shielding and armor has advanced much much faster than munitions and ranged weapons, but because those defensive measures are so good against ranged attacks, melee becomes not only viable but optimal. A dude with a hatchet and a jet pack is a greater threat to an aircraft than a SAM missile is. You kinda gotta twist your head around a little bit to actually strategize for 40k

But a lot of artworks were created with shell casings being launched out of Bolters like normal guns, seems they tweaked the Lore slightly so there were versions that used casings. TL;DR Massive lore dump that explains Combat Veteran Reacts' questions.
    1. The drones escorting the boarding craft are intercepting incoming missiles, the boarding craft has armor too thick to care about a little space dust. 2. The faction the Astartes are fighting is group of secessionists, not necessarily Chaos worshippers. The dude in the mask is a Psyker and the mask is a device called a psychic hood with works to stabilize the psyker's powers and helps to prevent the psyker from losing control of his abilities and exploding (or worse). 3. Yep, the Astartes are used in raids or QRF. An Astartes company (100 marines) can mobilize very quickly and come to the defense of high level assets within days whereas the slow, grinding wheels of the Imperial Guard which is akin regular army. It could take the Imperial Guard many years if not a decade to mobilize a regiment, but take and hold missions is what the Guard does best. 4. To call a Bolter a pistol. Yes, it's small in the hands of an Astartes but it's a CQB. Imagine an M4 being chambered in 20mm grenades. The bulk of the weapon is nearly all barrel and chamber.

      Just adding to the comments on the MultiLas part.... there's no delaying an Astartes. These renegades were doing absolutely nothing to the Astartes that was chasing them. If they'd done a bounding retreat (apologies if that's not what you called it, CVR. I'm forgetful), the only slowing done would be him having to step over corpses.

    One funny thing, in the 40k universe it's often the preferred tactic of Space Marines to board an enemy vessel even if the intent is simply to place charges on the reactor and blow the ship up. Between the layered Void Shields and the heavy armor of the ships in 40k, it would often result in drawn out slugging matches when ships attempt to destroy each other through bombardment. Astartes can take down an enemy's Void Shields using their shipboard guns, then slip boarding torpedoes in before the shields recharge, and affect much more damage from within than they could do by just continually blasting away at the ship until the shields come back up. It can often take hours upon hours of continual fire to take down the shields, leaving bare minutes for actual damage to be done before they pop back up, so getting a few squads of armored super soldiers aboard can bring the fight to the enemy directly and start doing damage to the more vulnerable internal systems much more effectively.
    The only real advantage a Space Marine ship has over a normal Navy ship is the angry boys inside it, so they use them.

    • @Charistoph
      @Charistoph 3 роки тому +56

      To be fair, most Astartes ships are designed for transport and support of the Space Marines, and are not dedicated void warships. In our parlance, closer to Assault Ships than Warships. The Navy of the Imperium is much better suited to acting like actual warships. It would be little different today if we were looking at an assault ship vs an aegis cruiser, they would both be looking at how to handle the situation with the resources on hand. And the Marines in this video are impressive resources in their own right.

    In 40k Boarding is not such a precision strike like looking for an object or person(in this case it is). But rather a way to deliver troops to another ship and fight a pitch land battle in space. Remember that most of these ships are not CQC. These ships are HUGE, like the size of city blocks type big. The goal is not to kill 1 thing or take 1 thing like how special forces operate. The goal is to *massacre* and *KILL* anyone and everyone Defending the enemy ship and to either take control of it or to blow it up. Think of it as a Hammer rather than a scalpel. The Greeks would try to brush past the other ship and shear off their oars with the prow of their ship. The Roman boarding plank (called a Corvus, if I remember) was developed during one of the Punic wars (I don't remember which) to make up for the fact that the Romans weren't as comfortable with naval combat as the Carthaginians, and would much prefer to fight a land battle.

      An interesting side note to this, is that in the Horus Heresy novels (10,000 yrs before the events of 40k) the Primarch Angron of the World Eaters legion, used a massively scaled up version of this boarding tactics. His flagship vessel had an array of large harpoons that he would fire into and hook onto target ships. The ropes of the harpoons (if you could call them ropes) where actually hollow that would allow his troops to use to move through and onto the target vessel. Also if I'm not mistaken, the planet and culture that Angron grew up in was highly influenced by Roman and Greek history. I may be wrong with that last part, but the point is, the writers definitely do their homework (for the most part).

      The corvus wasn't a plank with a hook, it's a damn spike. Furthermore, although I cannot recall if the Greeks did it originally but roman ships also used their ship as a ram. The frontt of a ship has basically a spike. If the ship crashes in to another perpendicularly, it could very well tore the ship in half, though I recall that this really isn't a good idea because the ship can get stuck

      @@SpartanMikey Good point. After doing a bit more reading on Angrons 'origin story', it does seem that slavery and fighting pits are the only major things that he and his homeworld have in common with the Romans. I've made my way through the lions share of Space Wolves and Night Lords books as well as the first half dozen HH books in order. So lately I've gotten a taste for World Eaters (not enough to know what I am talking about yet though) and Eisenhorn. However in the 40k books, the humans are not good enough triggers. So most of the time the bolter shot just passes through. It still leaves a small explosion like impact wave and a basketball sized hole, both which I don't think many survives.

    I want to put out the idea that while the traitors did start out using tactically sound strategies at the start, once they realized that they were fighting Astartes and that none of their weapons would even scratch the armor, they were pretty much just retreating en mass. I would say that was around the point they wheeled out the turret and people were rushing down the hallway all together without bothering to provide cover fire.
    For their part, I would point out the Astartes almost never broke pace. They recognized that most of the incoming fire wasn’t a threat. They were simply killing them all along the way, because they were traitors and deserved to die.

      In melee they are stronger and faster than the average enemy. so if you are in their lines running and crushing their friends they cant get a clear shot or even get time to aim their gun and shoot.
      So when your that close and they cant shoot or aim they can kill them all or distract them enough while their friends shoot their remaining ones.
      and if they are facing orks who loves fighting in close range its good to be able to defend yourself and kill them with your sharp stick instead of them killing you with their sharp stick. cause when it is orks or Tyranids they will out number you so its only a question of when they will reach melee.

      In our modern world, there is a fine balance between armor protection and ranged weaponry, with ranged weaponry having the undisputed edge over armor.
      Certainly the gap has closed in recent years, but still pretty much long range guns are just far more effective.
      The same principle applies in 40K, but the superiority of ranged firepower over armor is not as straightforward.
      Space Marine power armor is more or less effective against most 40K guns, except anti-armor weapons or very dedicated anti-power armor weapons.
      In this instance, even the Auto-cannon used in the ambush, which would be close to a 20mm real life round, would not be considered appropriate anti-power armor weapon, as it lacks sufficient penetrating power to overcome the advanced layered alloy used on Astartes power armor.
      For all intents and purposes, Space Marines are walking tanks and can more or less move with impunity in almost any combat scenario without mayor deterrent and even then they are fast enough, strong enough, smart enough and so excessively trained, that very few enemies can manage to slow them down, much less stop them.
      Because of this and other factors, it would be better to qualify Space Marines as Medieval Knights. They can and will use their superior strength and powerful armor, not to mention devastating speed to close in with the enemy and devastate them in close combat, where very few enemies are their peers and Space Marines are effectively indefatigable, so their killing sprees usually end when their targets are killed, not because they slow down.

They will not seek cover against that weapon, because it's not a legitimate threat to them. - The boarding craft used by Astartes deploy a special sealant upon penetration of any enemy ship. This prevents Marines and other possibly important elements from being sucked out into the vacuum of space.
    - These guardsmen are renegades which likely were under the control of Xenos or Chaos. The two imposing figures at the end were likely Psykers. They have that inherent psychic shield and have to concentrate on applying their other abilities, as you saw. Distract and flank was the way to go, given their lack of firepower (a strange thing to say, given these are Space Marines).

    Then there's also this thing called "Transhuman Dread" going on in Warhammer. It boils down to a psychological shock through raw fear. Thinking straight probably wasn't there anymore.
    Excerpt from the book "Age of Darkness":
    "Transhuman dread. Aximand had heard iterators talk of the condition. He’d heard descriptions of it from regular Army officers too. The sight of an Adeptus Astartes was one thing: taller and broader than a man could ever be, armoured like a demigod. The singularity of purpose was self-evident. An Adeptus Astartes was designed to fight and kill anything that didn’t annihilate it first. If you saw an Adeptus Astartes, you knew you were in trouble. The appearance alone cowed you with fear.
    But to see one move. Apparently that was the real thing. Nothing human-shaped should be so fast, so lithe, so powerful, especially not anything in excess of two metres tall and carrying more armour than four normal men could lift. The sight of an Adeptus Astartes was one thing, but the moving fact of one was quite another. The psychologists called it transhuman dread. It froze a man, stuck him to the ground, caused his mind to lock up, made him lose control of bladder and bowel. Something huge and warlike gave pause: something huge and warlike and moving with the speed of a striking snake, that was when you knew that gods moved amongst men, and that there existed a scale of strength and speed beyond anything mortal, and that you were about to die and, if you were really lucking, there might be just enough time to piss yourself first."
    And it has to be said here, that Aximand was a Space Marine Captain, who was part of the Elite who were kind of like a council to the Primarch Horus of the Lunar Wolves/Sons of Horus. Even this Elite Space Marine Captain experienced it to some degree, which is kinda crazy considering the psychoi-ndoctrination and all the genetical enhancements they go through.

    Robert heinlein's starship troopers is a highly recommended read. It is almost entirely different than the satirical movie that came out in the late '90s. It's really not an action book in it There is relatively little fighting, But a solid read-through will show why it was such a controversial book during the time period It was written and why it would probably be considered one today..... About the whole, “bounding retreat” thing before/during the multilaser. That would work if your guns were actually capable of harming the thing you’re shooting at. Their weapons, as demonstrated multiple times, weren’t even capable of making an Astartes flinch, let alone make them hesitate or take cover.
    Poor bastards were running for their lives while hoping the poor guy behind them got shot before they did because that was all they could do.
    And the guy on the multilaser cut down his own fellow soldiers because he had to take the chance to try and take down the Space Marine before the Marine saw him.
    Mostly, I think you just aren’t quite comprehending the kind of threat even a single Astartes is and simply default to thinking of tactics that would be effective against human soldiers and not the immortal and nigh unstoppable being that is an Adeptus Astartes

    • @joost1120
      @joost1120 3 роки тому

      @LOAN NGUYEN Keep in mind that it's not really comparable to .50 BMG despite being the same size. The propellant in a .50 BMG is detonated instantly at the start, propelling the round. The actual bullet itself is a lot smaller than the casing, and is just mass with a proportionally small HE payload, or no HE at all. When a bolter round is fired, an initial charge propels it out of the barrel, after which the rocket booster ignites and propels it further. While the recoil is probably quite severe, it's not nearly as bad as firing a .50 BMG, as most of the energy comes from the rocket. The mass of the bullet itself is a lot more than a .50 BMG though, given that it's pretty much the size of the case and contains a very hefty HE charge and a penetrator.

    • @joost1120
      @joost1120 3 роки тому +3

      @LOAN NGUYEN A boltpistol has as much energy as a 105mm howitzer? Not even close. Not sure if you're talking about energy of impact or recoil, but neither is close. A 105mm howitzer fired from your hands would rip your shoulder off and launch the gun 10 meters behind you. As for energy of impact, a single 105mm round can destroy a house.
      The recoil from a bolter would not be unreasonable. The only recoil is from the initial charge. Friendly reminder that we already have handheld weapons that do pretty much that, but even bigger and heavier. 40mm grenade launchers fire a much heavier round at a probably higher speed without having unreasonable recoil.

    • @joost1120
      @joost1120 3 роки тому +2

      @LOAN NGUYEN Those stories are more likely just a fabrication to prevent people from trying to use bolters, as it's almost a space marine status symbol, not intended for the 'lowly' humans. There's also plenty of guardsmen that have used bolters to great effect, like Stonetooth Harker and trooper Bragg for example. They both use heavy bolters without much trouble.
      The 40K novels show plenty of bolters in use by people that aren't space marines. Guardsmen sometimes use them if they can get their hands on one. There's also a story where a sickly child in an overrun city finds one and kills a Berzerker with it.

    • @joost1120
      @joost1120 3 роки тому +3

      @LOAN NGUYEN But Bolters aren't rare. Many blueprints were lost, but most boltgun patterns have been produced for a while. Given how practically every space marine and a load of other people have them, I'd say they are pretty common weapons.

    • @joost1120
      @joost1120 3 роки тому +2

      @LOAN NGUYEN Space marines might be in the minority, but there's still a million of them. Several forge worlds produce bolters, so it's really no big deal.
      Some specific patterns have been lost, but they weren't intended for mass use anyway, so it's mostly irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
      No one talked about equipping regular troops with bolters. The whole reason why the lasgun is such a great gun isn't just because it's relatively inexpensive. It's because the logistics behind it are perfect for a gigantic army. It doesn't require ammo and barely requires any maintenance. It is powerful and accurate enough for it's job and can be employed in almost any situation. Even if they suddenly found an enormous cache of bolters, enough for every guardsmen, they wouldn't want to issue it.

Pauses to add a reaction kills any tension that the original piece has, and takes away from the experience. I prefer having the more detailed breakdown after it's done, with potentially jumping back into notable parts to further break down what they're talking about.
      This one is a bit unique though since it came in pieces originally instead of all at once, so the pacing is a bit off. I can also understand with longer videos, because having to go though so much trying to remember will leave out moments that should be explained or expanded upon.

Extremely powerful it allows infantry to kill armored targets and hardened positions with ease as seen with that defensive multi-laser in the astartes video. *HOWEVER* there is a twist. Fire it too often too fast and the thing will spill plasma on the user killing them or exploding killing everyone around the user due to overheat. They are designed like that to prevent more damage to the weapon and to kill the operator to do it. The weapon has more value than the operator because most weapons are thousand year old relics. Yep and the Romans abandoned pretty quickly too once they became much more experienced at sea. Initially it was even the playing field with the Carthaginians who were the supreme naval power at the time of the First Punic War. Their sailors were better trained, and more experienced which meant they could out maneuver the Romans at sea. This is important as the usual tactic was to ram the enemy ship. The Corvus allowed the Romans to prevent a ship from getting away and fight the battle on their terms as they were much more experienced with land combat. Once they managed to train enough sailors to fight conventionally at sea they abandoned it.

    • @Schwarzvogel1
      @Schwarzvogel1 3 роки тому

      Naval battles are _very_ common in 40K. The reason to send a squad to board a ship rather than just blast it into space dust is if you want to be 100% certain of eliminating a high-value target. Ships in 40K have escape pods/life boats, and just blasting a heretic's ship to smithereens may not ensure that you actually get the HVT... or that he was even on that ship. Even an Ork Warboss would generally be smart enough to jump ship if he knew that the Imperial Navy was about to ruin his day. Another reason to board a particular ship is if the ship would be worth more as a prize than by destroying it outright.
      However, very large ships are actually _impractical_ to board. For instance, the _Trisagion_ during the Horus Heresy was deemed too large to board, so the Ultramarines just whittled her down with gunfire.

    Regarding your questions about the bolters.
    Firstly, they are NOT rifles, despite people calling them that and wanting to assign a caliber to the rounds. They're actually a smooth-bore gyro-jet weapon. They fire rifled slugs, like you'd fire from a shotgun. In this case, they are explosive rocker-propelled shells, launched from the weapon by a kick-charge which also ignites the internal propellant. Going off the size of the weapon, and the bore of it's muzzle, it would be considered an A gauge gun (2 inch bore), which would technically classify it as a punt gun. Bolters are considered to hold 30 rounds in their magazines, but actually this has been unchanged since the early days of the 40K table-top, where the miniatures showed bolters with much longer magazines than they have on current models, so make of that what you will.

Far range engagents and fighters and all of that. 40k Imperial Navy vesels are *close* range brawlers with *HEAVY* close range broadsides and boarding torpedos with massive armored wedgelike ADAMANTIUM prows for *RAMMING*. The main weapon is the broadsides but also the ship itself. The plan is to Ram anything in front of it then board and blast anything that missed the broadsides.

      @ARandomCustodian 3 роки тому +1

      @@tonistanicic8279 well they can be used from that far does not mean they should be used from that far. Lances yes can go very far at hit with devastating accuracy. With macro cannons not really because if you because fire them from too far and they won’t hit. Even with lead, if a ship they are firing at is too far, a small change in speed or direction can throw off the whole barage and will miss the target. The shells are a ballistic weapon or non instant based energy weapon like plasma. Since they are not instant and not 100% accurate the shots can be seen and “dodged” for lack of better words. Power and penetration however is the same no mater the range because there is no drag to slow it down.

  • @eXpriest
    @eXpriest 3 роки тому +4

    Just to feed the algorithm I'mma try to answer a few questions to the best of my knowledge.
    First, a bolter is an enormous weapon, even a bog standard bolter pistol is significantly larger than even something like an AR15 variant patterned as a pistol; these will typically contain between 6 and 15 rounds depending on the variant, typically more likely between 6 and 10, good for one short burst. Bolter rifles contain more rounds but I think it's important to note, in the beginning scene every time they fire they fire one round at a target and then select a new target, this is accuracy and efficacy you simply can't expect from either conventional firearms or conventional forces; but this contrasts nicely with the magazine dumps during the psyker fight scenes, which are only for distraction, or at the very best case bruteforcing through their defenses.
    The enemy forces themselves are a rebel faction, not chaos aligned but under the influence of a group of Alien entities which we meet in episode 5, per the creator these aliens were an original creation despite their similarity to another faction in the existing lore because the creator was simply unaware of them. The troops appear to be bogstandard humans in the form of Naval Armsmen (infantry dedicated to the navy), but their leaders are uplifted humans in possession of alien tech which grants them limited Psyker abilities (the masks/spines).
    A minor one but the Astartes did breach the hull, but both boarding torpedoes and the boarding craft the Astartes used have mechanisms to temporarily seal the hull behind them, which was always odd to me since you'd think fighting in vacuum while in vacuum capable Power Armor would give the Space Marines a decided advantage. As per the boarding action itself, I think it's safe to assume that the Space Marines were sent to pacify the ship in its entirety. Now in 40k, a ship that size could easily have a crew and passenger list in the tens of thousands, so sending five troops with the expectation that they'd be able to engage everyone aboard is absurd by modern standards, but this is 40k and as you know absurd is kinda the baseline.
    And to counter this the rebel forces set up ambushes, guard choke points, employ anti-armor weapons, throw every man available at the five Retributors and none of it works. Space Marine sensors and training see through the ambushes, space marine armor tanks through the chokepoints, and clever application of space marine weapons mitigates any threats from the big guns. As to the scene where the Sergeant chases the group straight into a multilaser trap, those men are already dead, they know it, the men on the emplacement know it, they're panicked and broken and nothing they can do will even slow the Retributor Sergeant down. So the gun crew on the emplacement mow them down, because killing twenty or thirty of your own men to give you even a chance to kill just one Astartes is more than a fair trade. This was also something you also saw in the Death Korps of Krieg video, where a squad of Kriegsmen saved a downed Dark Angel from a Traitor Astartes by drawing his attention, until one of them ultimately sacrificed himself by detonating every demolition charge and grenade he could carry directly in the Traitor Marine's face. Life isn't meaningless in 40k, the math is just a lot more blatant.
    I'm digging your channel btw and am looking forward to Overlord part 2. The same team did another live action SCP short film called Dollhouse, that one's quality as well if you're generating a list. If you're more interested in sticking with 40k, there's a ton of material, ranging from the serious analysis of Luetin09 to the more verbose storytelling of Baldemort to the pants on head goofiness of Bricky, and if you want something more lighthearted and funny you can always have a look at If the Emperor Had a Text to Speech Device, which while non canon breaks the lore down in a hilarious and lovingly well researched way.

    I really enjoyed the military and tactical commentary you provided. Your insight into the tactics as well as your knowledge of the origins of many of the tropes and situations we're seeing in the episode was very impressive. I'll attempt to answer some of the questions you have.
    In this case you're very right about the goal of the boarding raid. They are attempting to find and secure a specific item, which you'll see in the next episode. The faction they're fighting are called separatists, meaning they're humans who have chosen to break away from the Imperium and self govern. Very likely they were once an imperial guard or local planetary defense force who chose to defect to another side. This kind of thing happens fairly often, though usually the Astartes wouldn't be used to deal with them unless the force was sizable enough or dangerous enough to warrant it. For example, an entire planet defecting, or a group with access to some dangerous xeno tech or chaos worshipper elements. These guys do have some xeno tech, though it's not very obvious from the first two episodes. Those gold masks being worn by the psyckers are connected to it though.
