Instead of just letting someone get a win over government, they forced this man into a corner over a building on his property. Was the risk worth it, to risk a possible lose of life over a building? We have totally lost sight of what laws are for. They are there to govern and insure fair treatment to all. Was this man’s rights protected? Does anyone seeing this feel the law treated him fairly?

I grew up in Consett where Albert Dryden was born and lived, and my father was a close friend of his. Throughout my dad's childhood summers, when he was out camping in the woods with his brothers (to escape my grandda), Albert - who was then about 15 or so - would frequently come and check on them to make sure they were all okay and nobody was bothering them. My dad has always described Albert as being an incredibly bright man with a very simple way of going about things, prone to eccentricities but genuinely lovely.
My dad had moved us away from Consett before Albert shot Harry Collinson and therefore wasn't around for his trial - but he did go and visit him in prison a few times. He said Albert was quiet and withdrawn in prison, and had applied for parole - and been rejected - many times. On one of those visits Albert had given my dad a clay rose he'd made as a present for my mum, which she still has.
After Albert was moved into a nursing home on growing sick, my dad applied numerous times to be told where he'd been moved to so he could visit him before he died. We were never told. After his death, we asked to be told where he'd been buried so we could pay our respects. To this day, we still haven't been told.
Albert Dryden was lied to and duped by a system whose only interest was maintaining the idyllic views of Consett Moor, an area of land that could be replaced by Basra without anyone seeing a difference. Albert dug a fucking hole in the ground to put the bungalow in - which was for his aging mother initially, by and by - so that the roof wouldn't protrude more than three feet from the ground. They told him he had a stay of execution due to an appeal, and then they turned up with bulldozers.
Harry Collinson might not have been an evil man, but he was a cruel and stupid one, and my sympathy is limited.
Hopefully at some point in the future we'll find out where Albert was buried and we can go pay our respects. Until then, I'm glad this video's serving as some sort of memorial for the poor bastard.

Which is actually true in a legal sense in the UK. Nobody owns land except the Crown, we are all just on infinite leases.
We call it ownership because in most cases everyone (including government) treats it as if it were ownership.
But the Crown (via Parliament) allows some ways in which your infinite lease can end. Things like the military taking your land for war purposes. And also if you break too many council regs.

Counterpoint, what if you want to do something that damages the neighbors property, or damages the health of neighbors or passers by? Or risks either of those things to a significant degree? Property rights can't be absolute. Do you own the groundwater? What about the sky above the land, and up to what height? ;)
I share your dislike for planning commissions though, it's centralized power, the less of that exists the better. Perhaps a justice system with tort laws is enough, and they ought to be abolished. I don't know enough about it though.

    • @billmelater6470
      @billmelater6470 Рік тому +8

@@Tuatara1989 Well, you're going way beyond the the idea of being forced to make reoccurring payments on property that is said to be "owned".
I really don't mean to seem like I am brushing off your comment but, it's too broad for me to cover a YT comment and much of it is covered by the likes of Tom Woods, Hans Herman Hoppe and Murray N. Rothbard.
But to your point, least is best and tort law is a viable means (with some restrictions).
But to push back a little; property rights are absolute BUT, "absolute" does not mean isolated. This is to say that it is not limited to the scope of your (or my) personal being. It has to be the whole picture. The idea of property rights is internally regulated as a concept when you start with the idea of personal ownership that only you can own you. From there, the dynamic between positive and negative rights follow.

If you own a patch of unstable sand on a steep hill, that doesn't mean you can attempt to build a skyscraper on it.
Without PP, whenever you buy a house you would have no idea if it's even been safely built or the owners were just making a quick buck and you've just bought a house destined to collapse in a couple years.
A patch of land unable to get planning permission which would cost about 10k is worth over 200k if it had planning permission. You can't buy the 10k field and assume it has the go ahead to build a load of houses on it and sell it for millions.
