I've been coaching hurdles for 20 years. Always looking for correct and crisp videos to show my athletes. This video is so important. If you don't understand how excellent it is, you don't understand hurdling. Well done Sir! Excellent!
Well I ran hurdles and coached a few young athletes. This presentation, while substantively good is presented in such a discombobulated manner that it is difficult to follow.I always tried to emphasize keeping the crotch above the level of the hurdle and having an "attack" posture/attitude with that last step before the first barrier.Above all feel balanced.Having said that, the best instructional book ever written on hurdling is "The Hurdlers Bible" by the excellent Wlibur Ross (now deceased). The books are hard to find(think Amazon)and expensive but worth the cost. One other thing..if the athlete is capable, going from an eight step to a seven step approach makes a world of difference. This guy never even mentioned the number of steps to the first hurdle.
Kept getting a three step in practice BEFORE a meet (literally ten minutes before my race) this is because my legs are fresh and during practice I only get to work on hurdles AFTER a sprint workout and have little energy to attack. Once I get into my race my body takes me back to a four step so the entire race I'm fighting with myself to get a 3 step. I have 2 races left this season, let's hope I can get in the rhythm.
Make sure your pushing out of the blocks with the front leg and running as fast as you can towards the hurdle as if there’s no hurdle in front. Good luck ! 🍀👍🏾
Thank you so much Dominique. I was a 220 female hurdler for 4 years in high school. I was a natural. My son is a 310 hurdler (way taller than I was), and he is having problems as a freshman. It's good for him to see that what I show him is what a professional like yourself is also showing him. I can't wait for him to get home so I can show him this video about brakes and gas because I keep telling him that he's sitting in the hurdles. His coach is a good one, and telling him he doesn't have to "jump" over the hurdles just glide like I tell him because of his height. I was only 5'4, and he's somewhere like 5'10-5'11. He does a lot of "up downs" like in basketball and that severely slows his time. So thank you.
Thanks so much for this video! I have a really big problem with taking a giant step just before the hurdle, which makes me "put on the brakes," lean back, and drive my knee up instead of forward. I have to run both 110m and 300m tomorrow, so I hope I can make at least a few adjustments tonight.
Hey don’t reach ever push back so make sure your feet were underneath your hips. Run as if there’s no hurdle and run as fast as you can towards the hurdle !!!
you always need to lean and i struggle with my arms too but i’ve noticed that when i’m just going through them to practice is to pick a specific thing to focus on and that’s it also videoing yourself and watching it back helps
@@furriesareweird dude no it’s not this indoor Season I dropped a 7.89 I got beat by 4 dudes 7.46,7.56,7.6,7.76 these are touchable times 😂 u must not run track
One of THE BEST sprint hurdle technique tips I have ever seen. He hit it 100% out of the park. So many kids want to put the foot in front and “long jump” over the first hurdle. It ruins the rest of the race. That is why they are slow - even if they are capable of running FAST. Thank you for such excellent advice!
I remember watching this video when I first started hurdling 6 years ago wild how all the things he is saying are still things I need to work out. This really does take most of time and effort be patient
@@sanaib8840 I had a meet yesterday and did the 55 hurdles. And you're probably putting in more effort than the other kids because you're searching how to do it right. You got this 💪🏅
No coach should put an athlete in any race yet alone hurdles without proper training and prep. That would be a horrible coach and one unworthy of a coaching job. They need to learn what they are doing. Tell them COACH Burnett said that.
I did hurtles in school a week ago and hit my shin on the top of the hurtle, and then landed on my left knee cap. I hurt sooo much btw it was inside on a tile floor
As an absolute beginner, and a geezer at that, I'd like to know: do all hurdlers use the same leg to clear the hurdle first, and the same leg to trail, whether it be left or right? Is it just a matter of personal choice and comfort?
It's sad on how I just sprained my ankle, while practicing on the hurdles at school for PE and a main reason why could be that they just told us to start off with or dominant leg and jump. I'm looking at these videos now and majority of the girls did it wrong. One girl was just swinging both feet over. I came to this realization after I come home to a sprained ankle and then being told by a track person herself, that we were doing it all wrong and if you don't do it right you can get seriously injured. Well this video helps.
Try to work on that I’m not the tallest but I’m the most flexible guy on my team and when I do hurdles compared to the other guys my for is usually better
i’m on my middle school track team, i’m not a sprinter but love hurdles, and i’m learning them. i have no idea how to sprint in between the hurdles or what to do with my arms 😅 my best time i think is about 20 seconds lol
Just sprint like you normally would in between but it sometimes feels like you’re doing high knees. Watch vids on arms. The one opposite of your leg goes out
I know this video is a bit old but I’m 4’11 and I do hurdles I’m okay but it’s hard for me to drive through them bc I’m scared of hitting them any tips?
You need to check out Colin Jackson & Allen Johnson. Those guys were 5' 9" and 5' 10", respectively. Colin was a former world record holder, while Allen is an Olympic Gold Medalist. Both guys were insanely fast. You can do it. This video is gold! The key becomes leaning from the waist and staying tall. I am 5' 8", and consistently dropped mid 14s in the highs throughout high school with terrible training. Granted, my legs were extremely powerful and I had an awful lot of speed. Good luck!
+kitkat warrior pony It's really gonna depend on your height. High school height (in open field races) are 39." If your hips can't quite clear that, you're likely to have to get up higher than you would like to. I found that if you're aggressive enough.....attack that hurdle...you're still better off than at least half the field.

TacKyVt u seem to know what ur on about, with the lead leg, should it be the thigh driving up, or the knee then lower leg
Can you coach me a bit
Like today?

When im jumpin over the hurdles i stutter sometimes or like when im goin to jump my arms are always up, how can i keep them down

this video helped me a lot I was doing 10.5 secs in 55 hurdles now I'm at 7.9 secs aka school record
I meant 8.9
That's impossible, show me proof

I have good technique but i don't run after the hurdle, How i can run fast after the hurdle?
EL Pato Frances I have the same problem
Try leaning forward to carry the momentum
Noah Heiber one time I leaned to hard and tripped

I learned this the hard way. I tried to rush the first hurdle and beat everyone else but lost my balance and got last because I lost all my momentum.
When I do hurdles my body goes to the side, and I shuffle my feet how do I avoid that
I'm about to start track and I'm gonna try hurdles bc I'm tall but I'm not flexible ... would that be a problem?
Bella Rose Piccirillo that's my question too 😭
Try to work on that I’m not the tallest but I’m the most flexible guy on my team and when I do hurdles compared to the other guys my for is usually better
Flexibility is main butttt doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Do certain stretches evrryday and you’ll be ready
Just work on your hips a lot!! I'm 5'5" so I'm not that tall.

What do you recommend for steps. Personally, I find myself trying to break the habit of taking smaller steps when approaching the hurdle
