Music means so much to me. In fact, watching Jamel took my already devoted love and respect for Rush to the next, next level. Rush was all over the rock stations in Detroit Michigan in the late 70's, early 80's. There was a locker room attendant at the Patton Park pool that would blast RUSH, The B52's, Blondie, The Romantics, The J Giels Band, Kool & the Gang, Parliament, George Clinton & the P Funk All Stars, Bob Seger, Van Halen, Ted Nugent and others. Yet new rock, new wave, fusion & funk were our favorites. That was a good time to be 12 years old.
When you first hear them, you don't think there would only be 3 members. The singer plays bass and keyboards too. Sometimes playing live, while he is playing keyboard parts, he plays synth bass with foot pedals. Neal Peart, one of the best rock drummers, also writes the lyrics. They ended the band last year, after being together for 50 years. When they first started out, playing in bars, they would cover Zeppelin songs, because Geddy Lee's voice was so high.
You forgot pedals. He also plays bass pedals when he's on the keys, so that the bass doesn't just drop out of the mix. So he's actually doing four things sometimes; singing, keys, bass, and bass pedals, and often three of those at once.

Prior to the "Permanent Waves" album, from which this song comes, Rush wasn't on the radio very much (they had two singles prior, but not much else). 💥THE GIRL WHO LISTENED TO RUSH💥
From the back of the stadium
She’s easy to see
Standing up at the stage
In her Starman tee
From Anthem to Limelight
To YYZ
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
And all of the rockers
And all of the heshers
Well they dreamed of the day
That they might get her
And drive her away
In a Red Barchetta
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
Philosophers and ploughmen
They can’t resist her call
They cannot choose
Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
They've gotta love her
No she doesn’t say "Pert"
And she doesn’t say "Part"
Yeah, she knows it’s "Neil Peert"
‘Cause he’s close to her heart
Say a prayer for John Rutsey
He was there at the start
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
Philosophers and ploughmen
They can’t resist her call
They cannot choose
Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
They've gotta love her
Why don’t girls ever listen to Rush? (X a lot)
But she listened to Rush!
The blacksmith and the artist
They can’t resist her call
You cannot choose
Not to decide
So you’ve got no choice at all
No you’ve got no choice at all

Ohh yeah, when Geddy got down on the base at the instrumental part, and Lief, charged in with the guitar, Neil's laying down on drums,.yes, 3 humans, THREE HUMANS!, saw them twice and 2nd time I still couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing, it was like a fluke of nature that was as deliberate as anything. Incredible, not many groups translate to live performances, Rush are the masters of it. If you haven't try "Analog Kid ", Freakin masterpiece, enjoy, Peace ✌
Neil's drum fills are godly. All three of them I swear are from another planet! I have been loving Rush for a long long time! 😍
Yas!! Witch Hunt is a favorite of mine.
Love that one. The lyrics are insanely deep.
Understanding the metaphysical side of the song is so awesome
Saw Rush and couldn't hit like fast enough. This is my band. You have to listen to Caress of Steel, 2112, Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres and so on...These guys are the best 3 piece band that sound like a 5 piece. Hard to imagine 3 guys can make all these awesome sounds. Geddy Lee, bass, taurus pedals and keys, Alex Lifeson acoustic and electric guitars and taurus pedals and Neil Peart drummer and lyricist. Fucking beautiful
Neil Peart, the drummer, writes much of the the lyrics. Brilliant.
I couldn’t stand Geddy’s voice growing up in the 70’s 80’s Now I’m their biggest fan. The transitions and lyrics are second none.
I NeVER LIKED IT EITHER GROWING UP....NOW THAT I AM DIVING INTO IT RUSH IS AWESUM
One of my favorite things about Rush is that when other bands have a guitar solo they have an EVERYBODY solo!!! :)
Alex is at the top of game in this song. One of his best solos.
My 1st rock concert. I was in middle school & it was amazing!! My best friends older brother loved Rush, so his music tastes influenced us. Seeing your reaction was so fun.
I think taking your glasses off should be part of your reactions! Keep on enjoying the Holy Trinity!
I will never forget hearing that on the radio for the first time! Prior to the "Permanent Waves" album, from which this song comes, Rush wasn't on the radio very much (they had two singles prior, but not much else). But when this album came out, they started getting lots of airplay, between this and "Spirit of the Radio". I was getting ready to go to school (High school) and it came the radio and I freaked out! Then...when I heard that guitar solo section I just FELL OUT!! The world totally changed for me that day! My favorite band was finally on the radio! :)
When Rock ruled the Earth
"Distant Early Warning" is already part of your life, sit and listen closely some time. You have a heart, let them touch it.
bryan brady and the Emotion Detector solo (bass + guitar) and Between the Wheels
Each of us a cell of awareness Imperfect and Incomplete. WOW
That just about sums up the human race
"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice". Whew!
I've always felt that Freewill should be played right into Jacobs Ladder. What a set.
this is for me one of the best rush songs
Probably in my top 5 Rush songs of all time.
Welcome Jamal - to thinking man's metal - AKA: " RUSH ". Poet percussionist, Consummate bassist (who also sings, plays keyboards, rhythm guitar, foot pedals...) - and arguably, the most underrated guitar god in rock and roll - Enjoy !
The instrumental break was an intense spiritual epiphany, Geddy's voice going up an octave was his soul transformed by blinding enlightenment
I call 4:38-5:38 "The best minute in rock." You really have to listen to it three times because it's basically a solo by all three members. Listen to the guitar, go back and listen to the bass, go back and listen to the drums. It's completely insane.
Dude, my wife and I are life~long rush fans and this is the third time we’ve watched you react to them. You don’t know us but we love you, lol. It’s a most excellent feeling to watch peoples faces when they see or hear in these cases, for the first time, Rush’s best. I don’t know if you have seen their drummer’s (RIP) Neil Peart) drum solo from the R40 dvd videoed in Frankfort Germany, but if you haven’t you might just Shiite your pants. Thanks brother, keep up the good work!!
