Love this so much....the message is so beautiful....love love love....this from a 69 year old woman and fan from Tiny Ontario Canada!!!!! So proud of this Canadian band!!! Especially today Canada Day July 1st 2020!
One thing I failed to consider originally, that I notice more upon hearing this again, was how the guitar work during the "no one at the bridge" segment emulates the feel of the waves by constantly ascending and descending, and changes up the pattern sometimes with the lyrics to be more turbulent. Incredible theming. Probably some of Rush's best thematic work, and 100% understand it never getting radio play
My absolute favorite from Rush, and my introduction to them. No One at the Bridge is such a poignant song ... so soulful, so touching, so true. Caress of Steel was such a masterpiece ... it just took the world a few years to catch up to that understanding. Kudos to the guy that did the lyrics video - - well done!!
Jamal--I'm so glad that you discovered Rush! It gives me joy like a proud Father watching you react to the music that I fell in love with 35 years ago. Please listen to both parts of "Hemispheres" next, but don't forget "By-tor and the Snow Dog!" both are epic pieces!
As a life long Rush fan, this is their "hidden" gem.. Made when they were so young, and never commercially appreciated, in 1975... As many others have said, a masterpiece... A song and vision before its time..
It is so hidden that I listened to it when it came out and it did nothing for me. Now when I want to hear Rush, I play this ! I think it is one of their best if not the best.
You make me fill with joy to share your reactions for the first time.... Rush is one of those incomparable bands. And to imagine they made up but three members. RIP Neil... He cannot be replaced. Check out some live versions of him playing his solos. There's a documentary out there about his search and evolution over time as to how he played and continued to learn to the very end. And they were such amazing friends... Isn't it so clear they play with such love, for each other and for the music. It's so meaningful and fills your imagination. We used to (get hi) and then lay on the floor in a dark bedroom and eyes closed SEE in our minds eyes the fully complete moving picture that spilled out for each of us.
Best reaction channel on youtube... Music for life. Music to heal. Music to bring people together. You definitely get it and it makes your reactions the most genuine out there. Subbed.... Rock on!!!
Welcome to the club You are officially a lover of prog rock. When albums told stories, meant to be listened to in their entirety. No ‘just drop a single’ for these groups
I'm sitting here in tears listening and watching your wonder and sense of discovery like I did myself in 1978. In this song -- and album, Caress of Steel -- you hear Rush's passion, love, and labor pains that birthed 2112. The creativity the have exhibited throughout their career is mind bending. Never content, never complacent, they defined their sound and messages. Thanks for your own passion and expressive reactions to their incredible art. Vive le Rush! Cygnus X-1 Books I and II next please!
One of the best Rush songs ever. The person goes from birth to rights of passage to his love to grinding through life and getting drunk to the Fountain.... The last part where the volume fades in and out real fast- as I believe - is his life/soul leaving. Thank you for sharing your reaction with us. Makes me feel good that someone else appreciates their art.
"Caress of Steel" is a terribly underrated album. This was where Neil really began coming up with longer stories for the songs and his creative juices really began flowing. It was also after they'd been relentlessly touring, and their playing on this album is so incredibly tight. This album didn't sell very well, and their record company was going to drop them if they didn't come up with something commercial for their next album. They could have knuckled under, but instead they decided they'd rather go down in flames doing what they wanted. The result was the album and song "2112." A lot of the anger in the vocals of 2112 was actually directed towards the record company executives.
It was quite a sontg to listen to growing up in Washington's Puyallup Valley, in the shadow of Mt. Rainier. We actually *have* a "mountain in the east", that "holds the sunrise in the prison of the night"...
This is probably my most favorite song out of all of their entire discography. It's a hell of a trip. It's so relatable, and so profound, and despite it making me reflect on sadness I may have experienced, as well also such happy times, it almost brings a quiet dignity to dying, and how having just existed is such a beautiful thing. Appreciate ya, man. I'm super glad I stumbled across your stuff.
Sir, I was fifteen years old when this song came out and I played it over and over again, because at fifteen I started my journey and this song grabbed my soul, that vinyl never left my turntable, it took five years to reach my mountain in life, only to have it crumble beneath my feet. And everything that happened in between was like the ship on the seas sailing through a storm. I still have that record and will never get rid of it, I want my children to play this at my wake when I pass, this is the anthem of my life. I loved Rush since elementary school back in the late sixties, but Caress of Steel is my all time life long favorite Album. Thanks for letting this song touch you as it has touched many of us. ✌🏻
So glad you did this! Tears sprung to my eyes watching this! One of my all time favorites! Rush has helped me get through ALL the tough times in my life. Im so glad you have discovered them and i hope they do the same for you that they have for me. Peace bro
Some music does not age, and remains timeless. It's good to see someone, 45 years from when the music was released have the the same reaction I did, 40 years ago when I 1st heard it. Few bands can pull it off. Rush, is one of those with their combined musical talents.
This album, and likely this song in particular, was the biggest inflection point in the bands career. The supporting tour was largely unsuccessful and their record label told them they needed to make more commercial, radio friendly album next. This lead to what many refer to as one of the biggest middle fingers of a band to their record label and critics in general, in the form of the album 2112. They were willing to give up their careers rather than bow to pressure to alter what they felt their art needed to be. Needless to say, 2112 gave the band their freedom to do whatever the hell they wanted, and we are all better off for their integrity in their music, some 40 odd years later. Personally, I love this album. :)
I love their absolutely fearless choice to make the 2112 album their way. Better to flame out on something they could be proud of than possibly succeed by compromising and trying to make something they thought might appease the label. I would consider this more strength of conviction than a middle finger to the label. For the biggest middle finger to a record label, look to Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music-a double album with no hint of his previous or future material and no resemblance at all to anything that had ever been on the radio. No vocals. No drums or bass. No rhythm. No harmony or even melody. Just four album sides of guitar feedback and noise. I loved it! Actually heard a station play an entire side while I was driving home from college once. Could not believe it.
I just watched a Rush documentary and they were saying how bad Caress of Steel was and what a step backward it was and I was like, are you out of your frickin' minds???
My dad recommended I stayed away from this until he was sure I was a Rush fan. Then he was like, okay. You will appreciate The Fountain of Lamneth. I LOVE this song.
Lauri Ivey Indeed! Rush quickly became my favorite band after that. I already liked classic rock and prog like Pink Floyd. So it was an easy transition.
Rush has always been my favorite band. There music is alive, it always speaks of the essence of life. There was always and still is a rush song that has something to do with my life at any moment. That being said you have found the spring of life for a soul.
Well, I just jumped back into my teens! Thanks again! I enjoy your love of Rush. Watching your videos is like hanging out with a good buddy and enjoying some great music... God Bless!
Thank you Jamal..! I grew up with Rush and have heard all there songs 100's if times and to be honest they NEVER get old.. so beautiful to see some enjoying them like I do!! Its a magic time probably never will come again... so many great bands back then!! God bless you my friend!!
You just LEAPED to the top of my favorite Reaction Video Commentators with this video. I am so impressed by your ability to grasp the depths and nuances of the music and lyrics, as well as your appreciation for the skill of the musicians. I have laughed when I see your reactions to Primus, and the fact that you named this your favorite Rush song puts your opinion well into worthiness. I picked this video because it is a symbol of where I am in my life at the moment, being equal parts of multiple (or possibly all) parts of this song, what with my divorce, and resulting loss of purpose that has led to an almost fresh restart of my life, as well as finding myself lost in the Valley so to speak. I look forward to many more videos from you. I am of the opinion that Hemispheres, Books I & II should absolutely go on your list for future reactions, and if you like Primus, something a little more obscure by the singer and bassist may be something you'll like as well..........say Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel. Depending on whether you want something dark (that would be Delicate Tendrils, with Henry Rollins doing vocals), or something funny (that would be El Sobrante Fortnight), but both are on the same album, Highball With the Devil. Basically anything by Les Claypool. You strike me as the type to like music for thinking men, so I'll also suggest anything by Aesop Rock, but that is underground hip-hop, and if you go with that by some leap of imagination, I suggest you bring a dictionary, and brush up on your metaphors. Not a dis at all; that man will blow your mind lyrically. Sorry for the length of the comment, but I'm most impressed.
This is a masterpiece from start to finish...1of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded. Jamal, youcall it well... It's like listening to a movie being sung instead of it being acted. No band in history could tell a story like rush could! RIP Neal! (Maybe the greatest drummer of all time)!
“Call out for direction And there's no one there to steer Shout out for salvation But there's no one there to hear Cry out supplication For the maelstrom is near Scream out desperation But no one cares to hear” Yea just sitting here crying and giggling cuz this song is so damn fucking good.
Sure was the solos on this record are so insanely good this is one of my faves Neil's drumming is fantastic throughout and Geddys never sounded better he takes you right to the eye of the storm
Knowing the historical tale and myth of the Fountain of Lamneth will certainly help in the understanding of this masterpiece, and how Neil yet again found a way to tie it into our modern day life experience. A tale of life itself from beginning to end. This is the legacy of Neil! RIP brother!
As a life long Rush fan and musician whom is now in his 40’s, their music has always spoken to me. Lyrically, dynamically, harmonically and soulfully. I’m a drummer, but I consider myself a musician. Cause I ain’t stoopid 😉 Getting to the point., Your videos are amazing. You truly “get” Rush. You really appreciate their talent. And it’s a welcoming gift to see and hear someone appreciate them as I always have. Keep it up man. I’m loving it🍺👍👌🏻
I'd say they were higher during making 2112. Maybe even doing LSD for the song 2112 itself, lol. And "A Passage to Bangkok" is about taking a journey to get high more or less. Side two of 2112 always seems to be neglected, but it has some great tunes like that one and LESSONS to name a couple off the top of my head
@@TheCanuck1962 I was always really fond of twilight zone it's just out of left field cause it's just Neil Peart writing like a fanfiction theme song for a twilight zone reboot. And it's great.
I'm not the first to say this, but Jamal, you HAVE to do the following two Rush songs back to back: "Cygnus X1 - Book One - The Voyage" from the "A Farewell To Kings" album, and then "Cygnus X1 - Book Two - Hemispheres" from the "Hemispheres" album. As far as I know it's the first time a band did a song suite that spanned two albums. And they're the last of the great "epic" songs from the classic 70's era of Rush! Rock on dude, love your channel!
I’ve listened to Rush since 77 when I would listen to my older brothers albums, I haven’t stopped since. I was privileged to see them three times. I started going to concerts on my own at 15 years of age, starting with AC./DC in 78, and I definitely can’t count or even remember all the shows I’ve seen. Rush and AC/DC are at the top of my list of great bands and they are the best performers live that I’ve seen. Thank you for reviewing RUSH, it brings back a lot of great memories, and I love seeing and hearing people’s reactions to their music.
Jamel you never stop amazing me with your Rush reactions.Noone does as many Rush reactions as you .Damn bro.Try ByTor & The Snow Dog.I am most def a fan of you big man
Love it at 21:30 "Bring it on Neil" request and Alex kills it with that solo.. Not knocking you. Love that you are in the moment and watching your initial reactions to this song is a kick! Thank you!
What an amazing trip they were!!!! The lyrics to their songs I am only now at 57 years old ,am truly appreciating !!! They all three took their craft to the highest level.
This is one of the best reactions i have ever seen. The music is great but your sincere reaction is also amazing ... i would like to react two songs ... Cygnus X1 and Cygnus X2 with lyrics. Congrats for such a great reaction filled with true feelings.
Thank you so much for reacting to so much Rush! For those of us lifelong fans it is so fun to see someone experience the magic that made us love them in the first place. They are truly in a league of their own. If you want something along these lines but even more experimental, I highly recommend you check out "Cygnus X-1" and "Cygnus X-1 Part II: Hemispheres". The Fountain of Lamneth was one of the first of the great storytelling pieces that Rush did. It and The Necromancer set the stage for 2112. The two tracks I mentioned above are where they went after 2112. Thanks again!
Caress of Steel may have almost ended their career, but that album has some of their best work imo. I was 15 when this came out. These are the songs that made me a fan. This song, The Necromancer and Bastille Day are flipping KILLER.
As soon as I saw this video, i clicked it. This is my favorite Rush song. Which is really tough to say because they have so many good songs, but this one, this one hits home. So deep. It makes you feel so connected, and the music blows you away. In my opinion, its the most underrated Rush song. You have to be a REAL Rush fan to like it. I applaud you for your reaction.
Just discovered your channel and glad I did. Found you, Jamal, via the passing of Neil Peart. Rush has been the soundtrack of my life since ‘81. Peart’s lyrics and drums, Geddy’s voice and driving bass, and Alex’s inspired riffs speak to me. So glad to see your appreciation and depth of understanding. Rush and their art is worthy of celebration and thank you for a refreshing perspective. I suggest the song ‘Losing It.’ You won’t be disappointed. Peace.
The album Caress of Steel, from which this came, almost ended their record contract. It was misunderstood by many fans and the songs were not radio friendly. But REAL Rush fans know this is some of their best work. I truly applaud you for listening to both The Necromancer and now this song. You're a REAL fan no doubt. You'll have to finish off the album though. You've still got to do Bastille Day, I think I'm going Bald and Lakeside Park, the song that Neil liked, but Geddy hates, lol. The park is located in St Catherines, Ontario. "A lot of the early stuff I'm really proud of. Some of it sounds really goofy, but some of it stands up better than I gave it credit for. As weird as my voice sounds when I listen back, I certainly dig some of the arrangements. I can't go back beyond 2112 really, because that starts to get a bit hairy for me, and if I hear "Lakeside Park" on the radio I cringe. What a lousy song! Still, I don't regret anything that I've done!" - Geddy Lee, Raw Magazine
@@leddygee1896 I'm actually suggesting Kim Mitchell to someone else. Being that English-language and French-language stations must ensure that at least 35% of the Popular Music they broadcast each week is Canadian content, a lot of the old classic rock bands still get a lot of air time up here. Patio Lantern and Go for a Soda get played a lot.
I've known this song for 40 years or more. I always thought it was literally about a quest to find the fountain of eternal life. I've only just figured out that it's an allegory for the course of life from infancy to old age and death. Feeling a bit dim now. Wonder what I'll figure out in the next 40? 🤔
Such an incredible album. It’s always been one of my favourites and it amazes me that it took so long for people (fans and the music industry) to recognise just how good this album is. I still can’t believe that Neil is gone. I was never fortunate enough to meet him, but Rush got me through some tough periods in my life and their music and Neil’s words continue to inspire me to this day. Thanks for all your reaction videos. Your obvious joy and passion for Rush is plain for all to see. They remind me so much of my own joy in discovering Rush.
Thank you for showing me that lyrics video. What an awesome way to enjoy an epic song from a legendary band. An fabulous reaction to a very underrated song. Keep um coming!
This song is one of the most interesting of their songs. It is so detailed without too much detail. There is so much emotion and attention to detail of one person’s journey through life. I really enjoyed it. I don’t remember this song at all and I most likely have never heard it. Thank you for your reaction, Jamel.
Happy New Year Jamel! I know it's been 2 years but I just wanted to tell you that when I heard this Rush gem for the first time as a 15 yo stoner kid, my reaction mirrored yours, mind blown! ...and Rush has been blowing my mind ever since. Thanks for sharing your videos with the world. It is beautiful to see young people connecting with the music and art of my generation.

Caress of Steel is my favorite album.
I found this cassette in a discount bin at a gas station, some time in the 80s.
Worn out many copies since.
Crazy ! Found Jeff Beck Blow by Blow in a Hardware store .
Cygnus X-1 and X-II (Hemispheres) has to be next 🤟🏼
Glad to see someone who understands the lyrics and takes the time to understand them! Respect!
Best reaction channel on youtube...
Music for life. Music to heal. Music to bring people together.
You definitely get it and it makes your reactions the most genuine out there.
Subbed.... Rock on!!!
Welcome to the club
You are officially a lover of prog rock. When albums told stories, meant to be listened to in their entirety.
No ‘just drop a single’ for these groups
For story rock it's hard to beat Queensryche: Operation Mindcrime. That would be a huge undertaking as he'd have to do the whole album.
Used to take a longer walk home from school to listen to all of this.
RUSH THE BEST BAND FOREVER.....GREETINGS FROM. ECUADOR..
“Life is just a candle and a dream must give it flame.”
Dude I've been listening to Rush for 40 years, and I just get such a huge kick out of watching you experience these songs for the first time - epic...
This song/album almost killed Rush's career. The world was not ready for it.
they never will be
They still aren't ready for it. I love Rush so much because of this stuff.
RUSH is a thinking person's band. And that right there is the "problem"
It both almost killed and launched them into the stratosphere by giving us 2112.
When they released 2112 the label basically stopped bitching and let them do whatever they want.
Peace bro
Very underrated musical piece. Definitely takes you on a journey but comes full circle and wraps up beautifully.
This álbum is other masterpiece of Rush. The power of Geddy's voice is amazing.
The peak of his shriek!
They were very lucky the label didn't just kill 2112 straight away and drop them. There's plenty of precedent for it.
I just watched a Rush documentary and they were saying how bad Caress of Steel was and what a step backward it was and I was like, are you out of your frickin' minds???
@@JaymanOttawa Who is "they"? Rush themselves?
@@headlibrarian1996 No, some supposed Rush "know it alls" were ragging on Caress of Steel.
This is my favorite song of Rush. I listen for the first time in 1996 in Mexico City when i was inmingrant. Beautiful song...make me cry.
I was waiting for this song. I knew once you heard Necromancer this wouldn't be far behind. Great choice sir!
I love this program! You are awesome and I have loved RUSH since high school in the 70s. Thank you for this program.
Dude, I saw the thumbnail, “He’s doing Fountain?!” I nearly spit out my after work beer!
🤣
Yeah, this is pretty deep. You can see their true progressive form starting to take shape during this stage.
I've always loved this song! It's so beautiful and melodic Rush at its best.
My dad recommended I stayed away from this until he was sure I was a Rush fan. Then he was like, okay. You will appreciate The Fountain of Lamneth. I LOVE this song.
Smart dad ........
Lauri Ivey Indeed! Rush quickly became my favorite band after that. I already liked classic rock and prog like Pink Floyd. So it was an easy transition.
@@TylerLL2112 Two of my 3 sons are big fans ....
My older brother who introduced me to Rush did the same. Made sure I understood the band before letting me down this rabbit hole.
Your dad is awesome
Rush has always been my favorite band. There music is alive, it always speaks of the essence of life. There was always and still is a rush song that has something to do with my life at any moment.
That being said you have found the spring of life for a soul.
I love that you love rush
What they appeared to be doing for you is what they have always done for me
Well, I just jumped back into my teens!
I really enjoyed listening to this and watching your reaction. Rush can easily mesmerize. The video work is wonderfully created. Great job!
"Come on Neil! Bring it home!"
Not so fast says Alex. lol
"Hold my beer!" -Alex

Great song..THANKS FOR YOUR TIME ..& UPLOAD
Favorite moment of this video is at 6:54 after Geddy yells "Listen!". Jamal's expression of "what just happened?" is priceless.
I haven't listened to Rush since Neil passed. I'm enjoying these vids.
Awesome to see you digging deep into their discography. You are quickly becoming one of my favorite reactors. Keep up the good work.
“Call out for direction
And there's no one there to steer
Shout out for salvation
But there's no one there to hear
Cry out supplication
For the maelstrom is near
Scream out desperation
But no one cares to hear”
Yea just sitting here crying and giggling cuz this song is so damn fucking good.
Some of my favorite lyrics ever written. Neil peart was a fucking genius! RIP!
Sure was the solos on this record are so insanely good this is one of my faves Neil's drumming is fantastic throughout and Geddys never sounded better he takes you right to the eye of the storm
Same here; Why they look back on Caress of Steel and shake their heads, I am not sure. Shit, even the album title is great!
Yup. Been there. Dark night of the soul. You either suck it up and tough it out, or perish.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG. THIS ALBUM. THIS BAND. ALL TIME FAV SINCE I WAS 9YRS OLD. Their music changed my life forever and I am so grateful!!!
I was only 12 yrs old when I first heard this record, to say my mind was blown is an understatement.
Knowing the historical tale and myth of the Fountain of Lamneth will certainly help in the understanding of this masterpiece, and how Neil yet again found a way to tie it into our modern day life experience. A tale of life itself from beginning to end. This is the legacy of Neil! RIP brother!
You have just leveled up to Level 18 Wizard! Congrats! You have found the Fountain of Lamneth! All Hail Level 18 RUSH Wizard Jamel!
RRotz Reviews LMAO!!!!!
That Man is singin' and Wow, It seems an anthem to freedom from oppression through History Brother!
Geddy CRUSHED IT on this one!
No One At the Bridge one of his best vocal performances to me.
Sooooo fukn good 😎🤙
As a life long Rush fan and musician whom is now in his 40’s, their music has always spoken to me. Lyrically, dynamically, harmonically and soulfully.
I’m a drummer, but I consider myself a musician. Cause I ain’t stoopid 😉
Getting to the point., Your videos are amazing. You truly “get” Rush. You really appreciate their talent. And it’s a welcoming gift to see and hear someone appreciate them as I always have.
Keep it up man. I’m loving it🍺👍👌🏻
to quote Geddy Lee about this time period " i think we were pretty high during this time and it shows"
Alright by me 🥰
I'd say they were higher during making 2112. Maybe even doing LSD for the song 2112 itself, lol. And "A Passage to Bangkok" is about taking a journey to get high more or less. Side two of 2112 always seems to be neglected, but it has some great tunes like that one and LESSONS to name a couple off the top of my head
@Eric Byrd It's like they got just high enough but not so high that they were completely baked out.
This might also explain what he calls the "era of the absurdly prophetic robes."
Deep into the Rush catalogue now...
Masterpiece.
Did any of you come to drink of the fountain that’s on the mountain yet? Pure spiritual water.
Epic and very deep Rush classic. Neil Peart was a fantastic percussionist and even better lyricist. RIP "professor" .
Jamel you never stop amazing me with your Rush reactions.Noone does as many Rush reactions as you .Damn bro.Try ByTor & The Snow Dog.I am most def a fan of you big man
Yeah, By-Tor but do the ATWAS live version!
A Masterpiece WAY ahead of their time...heard it when it was first released....will NEVER get old. RIP Ghost Rider.
Ohhh, into the deep end good sir. Nice.
😅
Caress of Steel may have almost ended their career, but that album has some of their best work imo. I was 15 when this came out. These are the songs that made me a fan. This song, The Necromancer and Bastille Day are flipping KILLER.
You're content is awesome, just like Rush. Thanks man!
Balls deep into Caress of Steel. Gotta give you the major props.
@@jamelakajamal Congratulations! You have leveled up! All hail Level 18 Wizard Jamel!
One of my all time favorite songs. So glad you covered it, thank you!
The greatest reaction to a masterpiece, one of the most underrated songs ever" RUSHRULES "
I've never clicked a link faster
Still, I don't regret anything that I've done!"
- Geddy Lee, Raw Magazine
Lakeside Park was Neil reminiscing. I like it. Going Bald, not so much.
@@johncampbell756 "Going Bald" was written for Kim Mitchell of Max Webster... Another Canadian band that's highly underrated in the State's...
Is Geddy crazy???lol
@@leddygee1896 I'm actually suggesting Kim Mitchell to someone else. Being that English-language and French-language stations must ensure that at least 35% of the Popular Music they broadcast each week is Canadian content, a lot of the old classic rock bands still get a lot of air time up here. Patio Lantern and Go for a Soda get played a lot.
@@johncampbell756 It was actually a park that Neil lived near by and used to go there in the summers.

It's a song about life, nothing more nothing less. And prolly the greatest representation of it ever composed in a single song.
I kinda laugh at the folks that did not recognize this as anything other then phenomenal, from the first time they were lucky enough to hear it.
Thank you for showing me that lyrics video. What an awesome way to enjoy an epic song from a legendary band. An fabulous reaction to a very underrated song. Keep um coming!
Watching you enjoy this underrated Rush piece gives me joy. Well done sir, love the channel.
This song is one of the most interesting of their songs. It is so detailed without too much detail. There is so much emotion and attention to detail of one person’s journey through life. I really enjoyed it. I don’t remember this song at all and I most likely have never heard it. Thank you for your reaction, Jamel.
Man, you do some killer jams dude.......I have loved this for years........nice reaction......
My dad loved Rush so much, he named me Neil after the professor himself. rip. It's so nice to see others enjoy Rush, and how they changed music.
