He definitely is the documentary of them is a good story of them. He plays la villa strangiato so perfect it's insane and the intro. Alex is the whole reason why I picked a guitar. Alex is easily in my top 5 for sure. The rhythm,lead, and soloing is outstanding. You cannot sit there and tell me that rush is one of the greatest rock n roll musicans to walk this planet... Like it said in the documentary if you dont like your just a old fart.
I’m 56 and it’s just fun to watch people getting it for the first time. I’ve kinda taken this music for granted for over 40 years. It’s just how I’ve lived. I never really took RUSH for granted, they were just always there. 18 times live! ROCK PRIVILEGE!
59 my self !!! Some kids in our high school thought we were strange for listening to them back then, I feel privileged to have seen my share of concerts too. As they matured I matured with them always in my ears.
57 and I'm right with you, I remember hearing working man and fly by night- in the mood like it was just yesterday :) But that was ages ago in the cretaceous period lol Plus everybody had kick ass stereo systems back then, with lots of power and huge speakers. I don't know how the paint stayed on the walls from the vibration of bass. It's really great seeing youngsters discovering bands like Rush, when rock music was king and quality. Btw, my one buddy had a bedroom above his parents garage with a sloped wall across from his marantz and we used to jam out and blow fire from lighter fluid against that wall lol. Just like Gene Simmons - good times. Rush shows- haven't missed one.

There are parts of the story not within the lyrics but told in the liner notes. The pain and angst in Geddys voice right before the character kills himself which is then picked up by Alex's guitar... chilling. I used to be sad that he killed himself *the character in the story* but it was a necessary sacrifice that was what allowed the Elder race of man to come back and free the people from the tyranny of the priests.

I once ran back into a burning building to rescue my Rush tickets. Days later, as we climbed the hill to the arena, we felt the energy of 6000 other Rush fans, all climbing, elevating, coming together, coalescing. There is nothing like the energy at a Rush concert. Such a powerful, positive, dynamic frequency. Yes comes close.

When I was young, I would sit on my bedroom carpet, pop in the 8-track (yes, that old), headphones on and would read all the lyrics - over and over again until I knew every word and beat. Still know every song... on every album... by heart; in order! (Until "Signals.") Seen them 33 times LIVE, last time at Madison Square Garden and Barclay's before that. My favorite band EVER! I'm a bit younger but I got the privilege of seeing them 3 times before Neil's passing. R40 was an amazing tour but Time machine was my favorite. Really wish I was able to see as many as you! Sad day when they revealed Neil's news but he helped make music that is gonna live on! Greatest drummer of all time. That's just the truth.

I've been watching Rush reactions lately, you would be surprised to see how many black people are doing it, they're all unanimous about the drumming. I never thought of Rush as being funky, but the way some of them move to the music i'm realizing, what the hell we can groove and dance to a Rush song! It's one of those good things about UA-cam, people who never heard of them are discovering gems from the past but as always with Rush it's a fans' band. No radios, no tv, no good words from critics written or spoken, no mega promotions, just a fan base that was built one by one. In the end the music, their legacy speaks for itself. It's a little more complicated than that. But, yeh, they'd made Fly by Night, which was pretty much completely ignored and they were going down the tubes and playing small clubs half empty and such. Of course the record company was concerned (having invested a lot of money) and Rush knew the next album was make or break. They could have done something as accessible and poppy as possible, but they just said, screw it, and went for it. Of course had it not gone well, no one would be talking about how great a decision it was and we'd not even likely know about them. History is misleading because you only ever hear about the ones who swing hard and have the luck to hit it out of the park. In their case they did, and it became a cult hit, and then spread out from there. It could have fallen on deaf ears, as have many really good albums that just never found an audience (at least at the time, sometimes they later do.) And, as they say themselves, it's not like the whole album was one huge prog epic. The other side is much more 'songy' and accessible, and that helped as well.

The dream represents their dream of being famous. Oracle:the dream and Soliloquy just works too perfectly with this theory. I seen the tour of 2112 it was totally awesome what a concert I'll never forget them .please come back rush I seen you at the panther arena. Unbelievable band .That was my sixth time I seen them in concert.wow what a band.
On the Red Sector A tour... In Miami they played 2112 side one! In its entirety!! And also the did all of the epic long songs!! Cygnus X1, Xanadu, lakeside park, and whole moving pictures album... Concert was almost 4 hours with 2 breaks! They played bugs bunny cartoons for opening act!! I've seen rush almost every album since Caress of steel.... But that show? Was absolutely the best show I've seen!!!!!! Brilliant
2112 was my introduction to RUSH back in 1976..had never heard of them walked into a stereo shop..Pacific stereo in Fresno california and they were using 2112 to demo their premium system....everyone in the store just froze and went WOW!!! WTF is that?? Truly mind boggling..I went over to The Warehouse Records and bought the album.. .listening to it through headphones was even better. RUSH never failed to amaze and delight .all that incredible music and musicianship from a three piece band. . A THREE piece Band! The BEST...just the BEST..period . RIP Neil Pert... A true giant of a talent.
You have to remember, back when this album came out it was on vinyl. We had album art and many albums contained lyrics sheets. So we would sit in our room and read the lyrics and admire the album art as they sang to us. The lyrics and album art are just as much a part of the listening experience. My favorite thing about Rush besides their immense talent is their refusal to conform and compromise their art for the sake of making a hit.

Different masterings....i have a few 2112's as well.... you can get old albums or new pressings.... the record pressing plants cant keep up with demand.... do it man!!!!!
From a music standpoint, I never thought I'd get such enjoyment watching someone enjoy Rush. There catalog is just one fantastic song after another, album after album.
2112 is a Rock Opera with 7 movements. On the album, Neil Peart, the Drummer and lyricist of legend, provides us with a story that goes along with each movement. I will provide it here. I. Overture And the meek shall inherit the Earth II. The Temples of Syrinx ...."The massive grey walls of the Temples rise from the Heart of every Federation city. I have always been awed by them, to think that every single facet of every life is regulated and directed from within! Our books, our music, our work and play are all looked after by the benevolent wisdom of the priests...." III. Discovery ...."Behind my beloved waterfall, in the little room that was hidden beneath the cave, I found it. I brushed away the dust of the years, and picked it up, holding it reverently in my hands. I had no idea what it might be, but it was beautiful".... ...."I learned to lay my fingers across the wires, and to turn the keys to make them sound differently. As I struck the wires with my other hand, it produced my first harmonious sounds, and soon my own music! How different it could be from the music of the Temples! I can't wait to tell the priests about it!...." IV. Presentation ...."In the sudden silence as I finished playing, I looked up to a circle of grim, expressionless faces. Father Brown rose to his feet, and his somnolent voice echoed throughout the silent Temple Hall...." ...."Instead of the grateful joy that I had expected, they were words of quiet rejection! I saw now how meaningless life had become with the loss of all these things...." VI. Soliloquy ...."I have not left this cave for days now. it has become my last refuge in my total despair. I have only the music of the waterfall to comfort me now. I can no longer live under the control of the Federation, but there is no place to go. My last hope is that with my death I may pass into the world of my dream, and know peace at last." VII. Grand Finale
You forgot how The Grand Finale is the Elder Race coming back, to free the people from the Priests. When I hear it, I always envision a fleet of super-advanced spaceships, showing up to give the stagnant Federation a sound ass-whooping, and the voice at the end is the Oracle, who was trying to communicate with Starman in his dream, and give him hope that they were coming back, but instead, drove him to despair. I imagine that, after the final victory, he found Starman's body, and had it buried in a great mausoleum, made from a converted Temple, as a monument to the formerly oppressed, who are now free.
Not an opera. This is technically a symphony. The overture contains snippets of all the various movements of the complete symphony. An opera doesn't follow this formula.
To this day I still can't believe all the sound only these 3 guys can make! Truly is amazing! Three of the finest musicians all in one band. Truly one of the greatest bands of all time.
My dad bought this when I was born. It has always been one of my favorites. Had it on 8 track until I was 16. Then had to get it on cassette so I could play it in my own car!
Jamel, I just discovered your channel, and (roughly) one month after Peart passed, watching YOUR reaction to "2112" brought me absolute happiness! I acted like this when I first heard this ON TAPE at 14-15 years old. :)
"And the meek shall inherit the earth" Jamel's face lights up with both surprise and joy as I am sure every one of our faces did when we first experienced this song. Rush is a journey that is forever timeless and I can only imagine how crazy this was back when the album first hit the streets. I discovered them in the late 80's/early 90's. Here we are 30 plus years later and they are still bringing new joy in 2020. It just makes me wonder if they foretasted their absolute relevance to 2112. I think that there is defiantly some sort of "other worldly" connection in their ability to continually draw people in.

I was 12 years old when my 19 year old brother told me he had something I needed to listen to. Laying on a waterbed, listening to this through a set of his very best pioneer headphones I was utterly and forever changed. I had no idea that music could do this.
I was 12 as well, and my older brother had me listen to A Farewell to Kings, which was brand new back then. I discovered their older stuff like this gem later that summer.
My brother introduced me to Rush too, he passed away last year, now I hear Rush and long for those days off my youth. Miss you Rich, rock on with Niel!
I had the pleasure of seeing them perform this live, beginning to end. (I believe it was the "Test for Echo" tour) WOW! It blows the mind seeing just 3 people create this sound. We know you're hooked when you become an air drummer. :D
I remember sitting in my bedroom in the late 70's and early 80's, putting the needle down on side "A" of 2112 and turning the volume up and annoying the hell out of my parents with this entire album. Good times! This really brought back the memories!
Same here. It’s been my favorite album for the last 43 years. I’ll NEVER forget the 1st time I heard it. A few 9 and 10 year old kids gathered around a neighboring teenagers Chevy Chevelle while this cool high school kid cranked 2112 out of his 8 Track player. When I listen to this I am immediately transported.

Saw Rush in 1976 and they opened for R.E.O. Speedwagon and Blue Oyster Cult. The shame was Rush's set was too short. I came away from that concert buying everything Rush ever recorded and never bought anything the other two produced.
I got on a bit later, 1977. First time I saw them was the Hemispheres tour. My older brother had a great JVC stereo with the RTR 600D speakers pushing out 200 watts. I would sit in the focal point and crank it. I'm sure the neighbors knew all the lyrics as well as I did!

Hey Jamal critic Rush's "Closer to the Heart live" and then Tom Sawyer, Red Berchetta, and Big Money. Realizing that this is a three man band. And Neil Pert is one of the best percussionist of all time. Watch a concert clip of his drum solo. It will blow your mind !!!!! And he doesn't get tired thru the whole concert. But listen to those songs. When I was younger I wasn't a big fan of Rush. I was more into Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath. But Rush made me a fan. Triumph is another GREAT Canadian three man band. Check them out too.
Best band ever. The Priests represent the record company that was trying to control them. This album was their response. They said if this was their last album, it would be purely Rush. They assumed control of their own fate. In my opinion, water represents nature, which is organic and pure. As opposed to the manufactured corporate music, Rush flowed like a cool stream for all to partake of. 2112 should inspire us all to not compromise on our convictions. God bless the trio that stood up to the machine.

Nope, it is an allegory to world government, based on Ayn Rand’s “Anthem”. Check it out; it’s a pretty small book with a huge, “1984”-esque message. Peart was a big Rand disciple when he wrote this.
the first CD I ever bought with my own money when I was in second grade. I thank my mother and father for introducing me to stellar music early on in my life. dad and I saw Rush at Blossom Music Center when I was 9. best show I've ever been to. their live performances are exactly as they sound on an album. the musicianship is unparalleled.

The whole first side is a love Letter to Ayn Rand. Seriously. It even says so in the Vinyl gatefold. Its pretty much a sloppy SF take on the book Anthem. Except the hero does not die in the book.
At 2:15 your face was already lit up and I actually said out loud, "Dude, you don't have a clue... you don't even have a HINT what's about to happen yet!" Then the song and your excitement built from there just as I expected. As if anything could make listening to "2112" better, it was pure joy watching you hear it for the first time. It felt like having that experience again myself but better, sharing it, seeing it affect someone else the same way. I'm gonna let you in on a little secret about Rush too, though: It always feels that way. It's so good, so deep, so complex, that it can feel new and exciting every time you listen to it. "2112" is one of those that isn't for listening to at work to make the day easier. It's not something that works on a mixed playlist, or as background, or as music at a party or while you're hanging out doing other things. I listen to it maybe once or twice a year when it's the activity I'm in the mood for, when it's what I'm going to DO, like watch a movie or play a game. And while there are many albums and songs that I've never stopped loving, or have even grown on me, there's nothing else that's ever given me that "like I'm hearing it for the first time" feeling over and over and over again like this does. There are movies I've seen the same number of times (ish) that I can recite most of the script from and tell you every little nuance about, but "2112" still reveals little surprises to me. Each musician and their part is so good that at any moment you're focusing on something cool one of them is doing you're missing something someone else is doing... you might love that one really awesome drum fill so much that you have to listen to the whole thing 20 times before you forget about it enough just one time to notice what Geddy did on the bass at that moment... or didn't (which he's also good at). You just discovered not just something cool, but something that will give you years of continuing pleasure. This isn't a modern song that gets old as soon as the artist records another, you'll enjoy this MORE when you listen to it 20 years from now. Thank you very much for sharing these experiences, it's fun to watch and connect with.
I hear you shout, "THIS HAS BEEN A GREAT DAY!" and I'm teleported back to when I first heard this. My man recently I've run across so many different people having these joyful reactions to Rush, people of different ethnicities, ages, countries, and I realize you are all my people, but I also realize, "Hey, those times when I thought I just might be surrounded by morons, I was!" This album is the epitome of vinyl. There is a such a full rich sound found in this vinyl that digital can never duplicate. Makes me want to find an old Onkyo receiver/amp, Technics turntable, and Klipch speakers !
Yes, for sure, here in Spokane we have a record store that deals most in vinyl but also CD and the owner of it will put on music that is High Fidelity that can bust out windows. Even some of the 78's back in the 30;s can have the most loudly recorded music. But he put on a couple of Rush albums and The Beatles going from CD to Vinyl and it kicked ass so bad.
I'm so glad you enjoyed this! I heard this album when it first came out. I was 13 years old and it changed me forever. I picked up a bass guitar, learned this entire album, and I'm still playing today. That was back when you bought the record and read the lyrics while the album played. If you haven't done that with this record, I recommend it highly!

An absolute master piece. The song is an epic story with several parts. For me, it took on a life of it's own when I put everything together and understood all the lyrics and their meaning.

Plus everybody had kick ass stereo systems back then, with lots of power and huge speakers. I don't know how the paint stayed on the walls from the vibration of bass. It's really great seeing youngsters discovering bands like Rush, when rock music was king and quality.
Btw, my one buddy had a bedroom above his parents garage with a sloped wall across from his marantz and we used to jam out and blow fire from lighter fluid against that wall lol. Just like Gene Simmons - good times. Rush shows- haven't missed one.

It's my favorite song of all time
There are parts of the story not within the lyrics but told in the liner notes. The pain and angst in Geddys voice right before the character kills himself which is then picked up by Alex's guitar... chilling. I used to be sad that he killed himself *the character in the story* but it was a necessary sacrifice that was what allowed the Elder race of man to come back and free the people from the tyranny of the priests.

YYZ and 2112 are music so good that it's hard to fathom their creation at all. I mean Rush in general is mindblowing but YYZ is the most popular Rush song and 2112 has the best creation story.

I once ran back into a burning building to rescue my Rush tickets. Days later, as we climbed the hill to the arena, we felt the energy of 6000 other Rush fans, all climbing, elevating, coming together, coalescing. There is nothing like the energy at a Rush concert. Such a powerful, positive, dynamic frequency. Yes comes close.

When I was young, I would sit on my bedroom carpet, pop in the 8-track (yes, that old), headphones on and would read all the lyrics - over and over again until I knew every word and beat. Still know every song... on every album... by heart; in order! (Until "Signals.") Seen them 33 times LIVE, last time at Madison Square Garden and Barclay's before that. My favorite band EVER!

I'm a bit younger but I got the privilege of seeing them 3 times before Neil's passing. R40 was an amazing tour but Time machine was my favorite. Really wish I was able to see as many as you! Sad day when they revealed Neil's news but he helped make music that is gonna live on! Greatest drummer of all time. That's just the truth.

I've been watching Rush reactions lately, you would be surprised to see how many black people are doing it, they're all unanimous about the drumming. I never thought of Rush as being funky, but the way some of them move to the music i'm realizing, what the hell we can groove and dance to a Rush song!
It's one of those good things about UA-cam, people who never heard of them are discovering gems from the past but as always with Rush it's a fans' band. No radios, no tv, no good words from critics written or spoken, no mega promotions, just a fan base that was built one by one. In the end the music, their legacy speaks for itself.

It's a little more complicated than that. But, yeh, they'd made Fly by Night, which was pretty much completely ignored and they were going down the tubes and playing small clubs half empty and such. Of course the record company was concerned (having invested a lot of money) and Rush knew the next album was make or break. They could have done something as accessible and poppy as possible, but they just said, screw it, and went for it.
Of course had it not gone well, no one would be talking about how great a decision it was and we'd not even likely know about them. History is misleading because you only ever hear about the ones who swing hard and have the luck to hit it out of the park. In their case they did, and it became a cult hit, and then spread out from there. It could have fallen on deaf ears, as have many really good albums that just never found an audience (at least at the time, sometimes they later do.)
And, as they say themselves, it's not like the whole album was one huge prog epic. The other side is much more 'songy' and accessible, and that helped as well.

The dream represents their dream of being famous. Oracle:the dream and Soliloquy just works too perfectly with this theory. On the Red Sector A tour... In Miami they played 2112 side one! In its entirety!! And also the did all of the epic long songs!!
Cygnus X1, Xanadu, lakeside park, and whole moving pictures album... Concert was almost 4 hours with 2 breaks! They played bugs bunny cartoons for opening act!! I've seen rush almost every album since Caress of steel.... But that show? Was absolutely the best show I've seen!!!!!! Brilliant

2112 was my introduction to RUSH back in 1976..had never heard of them walked into a stereo shop..Pacific stereo in Fresno california and they were using 2112 to demo their premium system....everyone in the store just froze and went WOW!!! WTF is that?? Truly mind boggling..I went over to The Warehouse Records and bought the album.. .listening to it through headphones was even better. RUSH never failed to amaze and delight .all that incredible music and musicianship from a three piece band. . A THREE piece Band! The BEST...just the BEST..period . RIP Neil Pert... A true giant of a talent.
You have to remember, back when this album came out it was on vinyl. We had album art and many albums contained lyrics sheets. So we would sit in our room and read the lyrics and admire the album art as they sang to us. The lyrics and album art are just as much a part of the listening experience. My favorite thing about Rush besides their immense talent is their refusal to conform and compromise their art for the sake of making a hit.

Different masterings....i have a few 2112's as well.... you can get old albums or new pressings.... the record pressing plants cant keep up with demand.... do it man!!!!!

2112 is a Rock Opera with 7 movements. On the album, Neil Peart, the Drummer and lyricist of legend, provides us with a story that goes along with each movement. I will provide it here.
I. Overture
And the meek shall inherit the Earth
II. The Temples of Syrinx
...."The massive grey walls of the Temples rise from the Heart of every Federation city. I have always been awed by them, to think that every single facet of every life is regulated and directed from within! Our books, our music, our work and play are all looked after by the benevolent wisdom of the priests...."
III. Discovery
...."Behind my beloved waterfall, in the little room that was hidden beneath the cave, I found it. I brushed away the dust of the years, and picked it up, holding it reverently in my hands. I had no idea what it might be, but it was beautiful"....
...."I learned to lay my fingers across the wires, and to turn the keys to make them sound differently. As I struck the wires with my other hand, it produced my first harmonious sounds, and soon my own music! How different it could be from the music of the Temples! I can't wait to tell the priests about it!...."
IV. Presentation
...."In the sudden silence as I finished playing, I looked up to a circle of grim, expressionless faces. Father Brown rose to his feet, and his somnolent voice echoed throughout the silent Temple Hall...."
...."Instead of the grateful joy that I had expected, they were words of quiet rejection! Instead of praise; sullen dismissal. I watched in shock and horror as Father Brown ground my precious instrument to splinters beneath his feet...."
V. Oracle: The Dream
...."I guess it was a dream, but even now it all seems so vivid to me. Clearly yet I see the beckoning hand of the oracle as he stood at the summit of the staircase"....
...."I see the incredible beauty of the sculptured cites, and the pure spirit of man revealed in the lives and works of this world. I was overwhelmed by both wonder and understanding as I saw a completely different way to life, a way that had been crushed by the Federation long ago. I saw now how meaningless life had become with the loss of all these things...."
VI. Soliloquy
...."I have not left this cave for days now. it has become my last refuge in my total despair. I have only the music of the waterfall to comfort me now. I can no longer live under the control of the Federation, but there is no place to go. My last hope is that with my death I may pass into the world of my dream, and know peace at last."
VII. Grand Finale
“Ohhh, bout to smack my face off!” You said it man!
You forgot how The Grand Finale is the Elder Race coming back, to free the people from the Priests. When I hear it, I always envision a fleet of super-advanced spaceships, showing up to give the stagnant Federation a sound ass-whooping, and the voice at the end is the Oracle, who was trying to communicate with Starman in his dream, and give him hope that they were coming back, but instead, drove him to despair. I imagine that, after the final victory, he found Starman's body, and had it buried in a great mausoleum, made from a converted Temple, as a monument to the formerly oppressed, who are now free.

Not an opera. This is technically a symphony. The overture contains snippets of all the various movements of the complete symphony. An opera doesn't follow this formula.
To this day I still can't believe all the sound only these 3 guys can make! Truly is amazing! Three of the finest musicians all in one band. Truly one of the greatest bands of all time.

Rush is a journey that is forever timeless and I can only imagine how crazy this was back when the album first hit the streets. I discovered them in the late 80's/early 90's. Here we are 30 plus years later and they are still bringing new joy in 2020. It just makes me wonder if they foretasted their absolute relevance to 2112. I think that there is defiantly some sort of "other worldly" connection in their ability to continually draw people in.
To think that people in their early twenties produced this is even more amazing.

I had almost the exact same experience except with my cousin.

A few 9 and 10 year old kids gathered around a neighboring teenagers Chevy Chevelle while this cool high school kid cranked 2112 out of his 8 Track player. Dave Smith I saw Rush for the first time in 74 when they opened for KISS. Been a RUSH head since. R40 with my son KC, MO July 2015.
Saw Rush in 1976 and they opened for R.E.O. Speedwagon and Blue Oyster Cult. The shame was Rush's set was too short. I came away from that concert buying everything Rush ever recorded and never bought anything the other two produced.
I got on a bit later, 1977. First time I saw them was the Hemispheres tour. My older brother had a great JVC stereo with the RTR 600D speakers pushing out 200 watts. I would sit in the focal point and crank it. I'm sure the neighbors knew all the lyrics as well as I did!

Hey Jamal critic Rush's "Closer to the Heart live" and then Tom Sawyer, Red Berchetta, and Big Money. Realizing that this is a three man band. And Neil Pert is one of the best percussionist of all time. Watch a concert clip of his drum solo. It will blow your mind !!!!! And he doesn't get tired thru the whole concert. But listen to those songs. When I was younger I wasn't a big fan of Rush. I was more into Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath. But Rush made me a fan. Triumph is another GREAT Canadian three man band. Check them out too.

One of my favorite albums by Rush. I only got to see them live once, but it was one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Best band ever. The Priests represent the record company that was trying to control them. This album was their response. They said if this was their last album, it would be purely Rush. They assumed control of their own fate. In my opinion, water represents nature, which is organic and pure. As opposed to the manufactured corporate music, Rush flowed like a cool stream for all to partake of. 2112 should inspire us all to not compromise on our convictions. God bless the trio that stood up to the machine.
They definitely have my respect for that. I knew nothing about this band, if it wasn't for Ninja Sex Party, But through their parody, "6969," I found out about this song, and I love every bit of it!

Nope, it is an allegory to world government, based on Ayn Rand’s “Anthem”. Check it out; it’s a pretty small book with a huge, “1984”-esque message. Peart was a big Rand disciple when he wrote this.
the first CD I ever bought with my own money when I was in second grade. I thank my mother and father for introducing me to stellar music early on in my life. dad and I saw Rush at Blossom Music Center when I was 9. best show I've ever been to. their live performances are exactly as they sound on an album. the musicianship is unparalleled.
I love how the light in your eyes portrays the goodness our music is giving you ENJOY THE RIDE!!!!! This album came out when I was 12 and I am so lucky to have been there listening to all 50s 60s 70s and the 80s and 90s
Probably one of the greatest albums ever recorded.
Give this another listen with the lyrics in front of you. The story being told is every bit as good as the music that goes with it.

The whole first side is a love Letter to Ayn Rand. Seriously. It even says so in the Vinyl gatefold. Its pretty much a sloppy SF take on the book Anthem. Except the hero does not die in the book.

They made a three piece band sound like double the personnel. Genius. And the lyrics gave rise to some great philosophical discussions.
At 2:15 your face was already lit up and I actually said out loud, "Dude, you don't have a clue... you don't even have a HINT what's about to happen yet!" Then the song and your excitement built from there just as I expected.
As if anything could make listening to "2112" better, it was pure joy watching you hear it for the first time. It felt like having that experience again myself but better, sharing it, seeing it affect someone else the same way.
I'm gonna let you in on a little secret about Rush too, though:
It always feels that way. It's so good, so deep, so complex, that it can feel new and exciting every time you listen to it.
"2112" is one of those that isn't for listening to at work to make the day easier. It's not something that works on a mixed playlist, or as background, or as music at a party or while you're hanging out doing other things. I listen to it maybe once or twice a year when it's the activity I'm in the mood for, when it's what I'm going to DO, like watch a movie or play a game. And while there are many albums and songs that I've never stopped loving, or have even grown on me, there's nothing else that's ever given me that "like I'm hearing it for the first time" feeling over and over and over again like this does.
There are movies I've seen the same number of times (ish) that I can recite most of the script from and tell you every little nuance about, but "2112" still reveals little surprises to me. Each musician and their part is so good that at any moment you're focusing on something cool one of them is doing you're missing something someone else is doing... you might love that one really awesome drum fill so much that you have to listen to the whole thing 20 times before you forget about it enough just one time to notice what Geddy did on the bass at that moment... or didn't (which he's also good at).
You just discovered not just something cool, but something that will give you years of continuing pleasure. This isn't a modern song that gets old as soon as the artist records another, you'll enjoy this MORE when you listen to it 20 years from now.

My man recently I've run across so many different people having these joyful reactions to Rush, people of different ethnicities, ages, countries, and I realize you are all my people, but I also realize, "Hey, those times when I thought I just might be surrounded by morons, I was!" I was blown away when I first heard "Temples of Syrinx" on the radio, then I heard the rest of the 2112 album and I became a Rush fan for life.
Listening to this so many times over the years was great but trying to play it with my band buddies in a sweaty garage studio was even better. Long live Rush!

I could just listen to Neil hit the kit all day long. Damn I’m going to miss him so much. Just at levels that won’t be matched. And Alex is easily one of the most underrated guitarists of his time. So sick
This album is the epitome of vinyl. There is a such a full rich sound found in this vinyl that digital can never duplicate. Makes me want to find an old Onkyo receiver/amp, Technics turntable, and Klipch speakers !
I have a 30 yr old Teac amp for this reason. Still best heard through my old Koss clamshell headphones.
Yes, for sure, here in Spokane we have a record store that deals most in vinyl but also CD and the owner of it will put on music that is High Fidelity that can bust out windows. Even some of the 78's back in the 30;s can have the most loudly recorded music. But he put on a couple of Rush albums and The Beatles going from CD to Vinyl and it kicked ass so bad.

I'm so glad you enjoyed this! I heard this album when it first came out. I was 13 years old and it changed me forever. I picked up a bass guitar, learned this entire album, and I'm still playing today. That was back when you bought the record and read the lyrics while the album played. If you haven't done that with this record, I recommend it highly!
