What is the best solution to prevent extension of this corrosion, those doors hinge trim covers can not cover all the corrosion they need extensions, I'm really disturbed about that I can see that corrosion spread by time
@@dadinechannel4720 Mine has returned again. The only way I believe that this can be addressed properly is to properly prepare the aluminum surfaces to be painted, free of environmental impurities which would require a state of the art shop, based on what I have read. It is very upsetting to buy an expensive vehicle like this and have a corrosion issue like this so early in ownership. Even if someone with the resources were to launch a class action lawsuit, I’m not sure how much money would end up back to us, and if the corrosion could be dealt with in the end. This is certainly something I wish I knew about before purchase as I would definitely have considered something else.
Thank you for your response, it's really embarassing situation, my car has only one year 40000km it's almost new, I don't want to paint it, I' m about searching another solution, I found those Door Hinge Trim Cover on (aliexpress) but they need to have a wide ledges so that they can hide properly the corrosion, what do you think of this solution,if we can fix them with large base? Can you make for us a video , it would be great because it will help many other wrangler owners
@@CheaperJeeperTV by the way I've just subscribed to your channel, you do à good job, congratulations ✌✌✌
I really enjoy your videos. They are well researched, provide excellent "how to's", and are entertaining. Thanks
Hey John,
I appreciate the feedback. Feel free to share. :-)
Great channel man I’m surprised i havent found it before subscribed!! Another JL channel!
Hey Task Force Offroad, Thank you for the feedback. It is very much appreciated.
Thanks for the info, I will go check my new 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport 4 door for that hinge corrosion problem.
Hopefully you’re ok.
Thanks for the video, I have the same issue on my 18 JL. liked and subscribed, best of luck to you!
Hey thanks for the feedback. I hope you enjoy some of the other videos too.
This might to a deal breaker for me. I’m glad I found this video. I really want to own a Wrangler but too many issues for the money.
Hey John, I would have been thinking the same thing if I knew about this before I bought it.
Agreed. I was set to place an order on Saturday.. this really concerns me. May change my mind.
This issue really disappoints and scares the hell out of me. So far, it looks like my 2019 JLUR is not affected. I wonder what percentage of Wranglers have this issue. Strange that it seems to be only some and not all. I bet the folks at Ford were all over this when planning the new Bronco. While Jeep was sitting on their hands, Ford was looking at the Wranglers and doing all the things Jeep should have. I find it interesting, the amount of Jeep related social media content that refers to the Bronco. Heads should roll at FCA. I hope it's' not too late for Jeep to get its act together.
Good video. I hope everything turns out well with your Wrangler!
Hey Randy, Thanks. You bring up a good point. I wonder what Ford has done with their hinges. I'm going to investigate that!!!
Lenny was not pleased with the corrosion issue! Great video, loved the song, well done!
lol. Thanks for the feedback. Wasn’t sure how that would have been received. Lol.
How are your hinges holding up now? Would love if you made another hinge video update in the future!
Hey Erick, The hinges are holding up well thus far. The dealership told me that they painted both parts first, hinges and doors, before they joined them together. Hopefully that will have done the trick. An update is a good idea, I’ll look into that in a while. Thanks. Cheers.
Subscribed after I heard you Sing the Blues. cheers
LOL...Hey cool vibes, I appreciate the support! ...and thank you. Cheers my friend.
Late on this, but my 2018 had this issue and every one of my friends JLs. Which were a few. The problem lies in manufacturing. They didn't paint under the hinge. Eventually, any moisture gets trapped between the hinge and door. Any contaminants lie there exposed to bare aluminum. This is a defect and laziness from Jeep. They need to paint the doors and hinges separately before assembly. They won't do that because they want to paint the doors already assembled. All JLs and JTs are affected. They will all corrode quickly after a year or two. There needs to be a major class action lawsuit as this issue runs up 5k+ dollars to repair or replace doors, hinges, hoods, tailgates.
Hey Victor, I agree. But how does a class action happen? Also, have your friend check edges of doors and hoods. It happens there as well. Ask me how I know. Sorry to say. Thanks for sharing your experience. Cheers
@@CheaperJeeperTV There are dozens upon dozens of pages on JLWranglerForums on this same issue. Some dealers do cheap repairs to paint around the hinge. Some rarely some do it right and take it apart and repair / paint each part separately. I'm assuming, a law office that specializes in class action lawsuits would have to take the case and send out ads / notifications to owners. Unfortunately, I believe sometimes there is so much corrosion to repair or contamination that you have to replace the entire door and hinges. It ends up costing more money for repairs than just replacing it and repainting it properly. Such a shame. I saw a Sahara the other day and it had 5" of corrosion all around every hinge with major blistering. My hood paint was flaking around the hinges and the doors were spreading rapidly after 12 months of buying it new. I like in CA near the coast, but no road salt or harsh winters.
Yep. I’ve been in 3 time already and had parts corrode after being repaired. I have lot of miles on my Jeep and will be soon out of warranty so future costs for repairing this will cost me big time. This shouldn’t be happening to any car this soon in ownership. Maybe someone in the forums can get a class action going.
@@CheaperJeeperTV Maybe it's time to Line X the doors and hinges. haha
Yeah. I’ve seen a Jeep Wrangler JK with that. I’m curious though, would the oxidation of the aluminum on the JL panels cause it to lift?
I have an 08 Wrangler. Exact same issue. I bit the bullet and spent the 200 CAD dollars on new hinges. These are powder coated steel hinges. After removing the original ones I found a ton of powdery salt build up behind the hinges and of course bare metal. Before installing the new hinges I cleaned everything up, primed and painted the bare metal, then put a layer of silicone on the ne new hinges. Installed the new hinges without issue. 2 winters and not a hint of corrosion.
Hey John,
Good stuff.
The added issue with the JLs is that their body panels are aluminum, and new JLs have corrosion occurring on their body panels already!!
A new or nearly new vehicle should not have this problem already.
Just found your channel. I have a JKU and did not have anything like the corrosion issues on the JL series. I was considering buying the Gladiator. I have a lifetime warranty on the JKU Willys, and plan to keep it forever.
Hey David,
That sounds like a good move given the uncertainty of the JL corrosion issue.
Cheers
Don't forget the broken inner door weld click that they will ALL get, also an issue since the 2018 JL and up to 2021 JT as well. They like to ignore these issues for a very long time
I think I have that, now that you mention it. I've been hearing a click, thinking it's just the cold affecting the trim pieces, expanding and contracting. I'll have to google it. Thanks.
I just looked up this problem and your video popped up, so long story short mine is a 2020 jeep wrangle Sahara JL and i have the same issues, I was told the bumper to bumper warranty covers this issues depending if Chrysler wants to or not, Mine has 34k miles on it. I called the closest dealership and they told me to take it in so they can take pictures and send them to the Chrysler company and see what they say....
Hey ponchirizo,
Good luck. It's returned two times on my door edges so far, and I am now past warranty.😞
My 2018 JL has it.. bought it new in 2019.. noticed in 2020 (Michigan’s salty roads). Going to get warranty work on my ASAP.
Hey Aj, I think it may be more than salty roads that explains it. Good luck with the warranty work. Cheers.
BEWARE ! Just got my 2020 Jeep Rubicon back from Suncoast in Seminole FL, After 6 months of this process. Replaced all doors and the hood. Came back with a dozen air Bubbles in the new hood, door locks on passenger don't work, New warning light on dash, and Rubicon decals will not be put on for 3 more weeks. Such a mess with Suncoast DO NOT GO THERE for Corrosion warranty claim and they never offered me a rental took 2 weeks for them to complete
Sorry to hear about the bad experience. Not only do jeep owners possibly face the corrosion issue but sometimes poor dealership repair service. Such a shame.
Hey, Have you by chance had this issue addressed or “fixed”?
If so how did the repair go? Has it re occurred? And if so any info/insight the shop gave you as to the fix?
I have it one one hinge. But I’ve heard horror stories of ppl getting it fixed by the dealer shops to the point they wished they left it.
Anyhow, thanks for any input and for the vid.
Keep it up 👍
Hey JC 13, I just got the JL back from the dealer yesterday.
It's been in and out three times over this corrosion issue.
First, it started with the hinges, and leading edge of the rear passenger door, then Second the driver's side front fender and tailgate hinges, and then third, the leading edge of the driver's door. The repair is ok now, but it has not gone as I would have hoped. Some re-touch-ups were needed, and even if I wanted to sell it, the resale value now has been diminished.
I'm hoping that any spots of issue have been found and addressed, but I can't say it wont reappear in the spots repaired or anywhere else for that matter. Who would have thought anyone buying a new vehicle would have to address something like this two years into ownership. Very disappointing. Good luck on your Jeep.
@@CheaperJeeperTV Hey, yea your story sounds very familiar to many I’ve read online.
Totally agree with you! This is a really bummer. I love my JL and was (and still am) planning to keep it long term.
It’s very disappointing that there has been a TSB out for this since Nov of 2018 (2 YERAS) and they haven’t changed a thing in production to rectify this.
They should at least try something...and the don’t. Which makes it worse!
Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it, as well as your great work on the vids.
Hope your jeeps fix last and is good to go now!
@@JCx13 Hey I appreciate the feedback. I'm glad you're finding the videos of interest. Thanks for watching. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV
Thanks for the informative videos! Sorry to hear about your issues. It definitely is very concerning, especially considering the high price of this vehicle. I'm going to hold off buying one until well into this generation, hopefully they address the problem soon!
Lots of possibilities regarding the reason for the corrosion at or close to the hinges, but how about even the bottoms of my doors?
Hey myz06rocks, I had corrosion along the bottom of the doors as well as the edge of the driver’s fender and front hood. :-(. Fixed under warranty, but, why it’s happening? And so soon?
I ran a bead of caulk around the hinges as to not let moisture in between and seems to be doing well
Hey Ryan, Thanks and keep us posted on how your hinges make out in the long run, as some believe the cause for the corrosion is due to other factors. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV it is interesting..."Galvanic corrosion (dissimilar-metal corrosion) is an electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes preferentially, when in electrical contact with a different type of metal, and both metals are immersed in an electrolyte such as water."
5 years just finished on my Jeep and unfortunately I am now addressing this issue because my warranty is expired. I also have 70k on it. I have an appointment next week and the dealer said they will speak to the manufacturer to see if they can repair it cost free.
Good luck!🤞
I just realized I have same issue and I've kept it spotless
Hey KAFKUBA,
I babied mine too. I believe it doesn't have anything to do with how anyone looked after the Jeep or how they drove it. I believe it may be the result of improper material prep or quality.
Sorry to hear you're also experiencing the corrosion issue. It will be interesting to see what comes of the class action lawsuit.
Cheers
@@CheaperJeeperTV I think I'm still under warranty but this will be a never ending battle
I agree with you.
@@CheaperJeeperTV I just posted a video of my issue...I don't even want to deal with dealership and ruin my day.
What is the link to your video I will watch it.
I do have some corrosion on my '20 JL, hinges and side of the hood.
Hey torontofc1975, Get it addressed right away under warranty, and keep on top of it. I've been in 4 times already, but am out of warranty soon😞
I have the same issue. Mine is 2019. I got corrosion into the hinges after 2 years as well. Planning to get repaired by warranty soon. Let’s see.
Hey Flying Skull B737, I hope it doesn't turn up in other places like leading edges of doors like on mine. Good luck.
@@CheaperJeeperTV 😲! Did you apply for warranty? Was it difficult to arrange?
It was repaired twice under warranty and it returned again, but now have too many kilometres past warranty.
Complete bummer! I have the same problem, every door , hood , and tailgate.
Hey Half Barrel, I agree. Super awful issue to have. I think it's important to let people know of this issue, so that they can make an informed buying decision for sure.
My wife's 2018 JL just came back from the body shop. All fixed now. Worried about it coming back in the future.
Hey Nick, I don't blame you for being concerned. The way they chose to fix it will have something to do with it coming back sooner than later. Did they offer anything in the form of an explanation or reassurance? I hope it works out for you.
Well here are 8 months later and it's back at the body shop for the issues again.
Guess what? Me too. Took my JL to the dealership this morning to repair some "new" spots too! The hood, hinges, and window frame! This isn't good.
@@CheaperJeeperTV no it's not. I am getting very annoyed and feel it's going to be a on going problem. Our old 2015 jk never had any issues. Thinking of trading it in on a new bronco.
Hey Nick, I feel the same way, but I don't know with any degree of certainty that the bronco doesn't have the same or some other issue.
noticed mine on the hood hinge wrangler 2021
gotta check mine elsewhere after 1 year
Hey James,
Ah! Sorry to hear.
Would those electronic anti rust boxes work.at fixing this since it works by giving a electric charge ?
Hey Jake, I have seen many many UA-cam videos and read many forum explanations that say those electronic anti rust boxes DO NOT work.
I just found it on my 2021 JL Rubi. So far, it’s just the hood hinge but i know there is more to follow. I just plan to live with it.
Yeah, I was upset to experience the corrosion on my first Jeep. On my new jeep, if it comes back, I’m thinking I’ll just deal with it as well. The rest of the jeep is so awesome. It’s too bad about this silly issue.
@@CheaperJeeperTV As I see it….I have cancer…I guess my Jeep was feeling left out! 😜😄

Is there a way to install a sacrificial anode somewhere on the door? Someone who might know more about metallurgy than I do.
Hey Off Road Utah, I do not know enough about those, but I was of the impression that when you see them on boat motors, for example, their being emerged in water is a necessary component to facilitate the movement of electrons or something like that. If you Google “Requirements for sacrificial anodes” I am sure you’ll find a better explanation. Cheers.
This might be a warranty question, but if I buy a used 2018 with corrosion at the hinges, is this repair covered by the warranty? The car has 60,000 miles and comes with CPO extended warranty.
Hey Russell, I believe the warranty is different for the states compared to Canada. Here's a link that nmigth give you more info. You're best to ask at the dealership in regards to the extended warranty that you mention. www.autobytel.com/jeep/wrangler/2018/warranty/

Just noticed the paint bubbling on my 2020 JL. I'm so pissed!
It's always garaged and has only 6,000 miles.
I found it on the front of the hood and above and below the rear door hinge.
Nothing on the door hinges but I'm sure it's just a matter of time.
Going to the dealer next week to go over a fix, I should just trade it in!!
Hey Magoo, i’ve been back twice already to have it fixed and it’s come back again. This is an issue that had I known of it in advance I may have thought twice before getting the Jeep to be honest. It bothers me to have spent so much money and I had this happen so soon. After 10 years maybe.
@@CheaperJeeperTV That’s just awful!
I’m going to inspect the Jeep closer to see if I have it on the Door Hinges too.
If it’s everywhere I’m just going to get rid of it. Too bad, my wife and I really love it and have been wanting a Jeep for a very long time. I should of researched it better before buying it.
I totally understand. When I bought my 2018 JL this issue hadn’t surfaced yet. If I knew then what I know now, I would have bought something else. Having said that, whatever else I might have picked may have had something unacceptable about it as well. You never know. Mind you I believe that there are some manufacturers that have a better reputation and record. Also, despite the awful corrosion issue there still are many items I like about the JL that I shared in my 100,000 km and 100,000 miles review videos.

That’s sounds very unusual. Good luck.
Had my 2018 JL Sahara fixed 3 times in 4 years for this. Just traded in for a 2022 X5M Competition. Oh well. I tried.
I have also had it in that many times. The X5M is nice too. Enjoy.
How to apply lithium grease video to hinges to prevent video?
That would be good.

the frame also corrodes overtime, seems like the metal quality they used on these JLs was lower than the old JK
Do you not think rustproofing will stop the frame from rusting? If not I’m glad there’s a warranty on the rustproofing. :-)
@@CheaperJeeperTV
Oh yeah rust proofing will work, JLs don't rust worst than TJs. JKs metal I believe was different, better steel quality, 2014+ JKs
Interesting
Dealership fixed all 4 doors and hinges on my 2018 JL at no cost.
Hey That's great! They did for mine as well....more than once.

Sorry to hear. 😒
FYI this has been an issue for a long time, it's not just the JL, also the JK.
Hey John, I knew the JK rusted out I. Places like the hinges. I guess I thought with all the brilliant improvements they made with the JL and going to all aluminum doors, that this issue wouldn’t be there now. The other point is that it’s happening so soon!!! Cheers.
On JK atleast it stays on the hinge and the door is not effected. Glad I have a JK 🥂
I noticed 18 months after getting my 2018 JL Rubicon I had corrosion on all the door hinges. Jeep fixed it under the warranty. One year later all the hinges are doing it again but now the hood hinges and the bottom of 3 doors started. Jeep has had my car 4 different times in 3 years to fix it and is going to be having it again. They said there is definitely a problem and they will just keep fixing it because it is under warranty. Why can't they figure out the problem. I paid $54,000 for a car that will look like junk in a short time.
Hey Alysia, My Jeep is having the exact same issue, and it is going in the the dealer again. However, when the warranty is up, our Jeeps will continue to corrode, and we will all have Jeeps with paint bubbling off due to the corrosion. This should be a class action law suit, but I don't have the resources or know how to do it. It's a pain to have to deal with this so soon into the ownership of a new expensive JL.
I bought jl 2019 and in two years it has this problem every where hood fender door hinges, door bottom … I am very disappointed… when I went to the dealership… they were very easy about it … I told them I had Honda Civic for 10 years no any rust problem… I might not buy Jeep again
Hey Garry, I hear ya’
Just curious if you got the dealer undercoating?
No I did not. If you were wondering if that has any impact on the corrosion process discussed in this video, I do not believe it impacts it in any way.
@@CheaperJeeperTV Than you for your reply appreciate that. I agree'd to the dealer undercoating, basically looks like Rhino, and they also do the drilling holes etc. That being said, he did mention the hinges as well. I wonder if there is a way to just swich out the hinges all together with aftermarket ones that are not aluminum...carbon or tough plastic even
Yeah, I’m not sure about that. 🤷🏻♂️
I mean Rust is technically corrosion of refined Iron, and corrosion on aluminum is usually called white rust. so they are really just rust either way.

I guess on the bright side the corrosion of aluminum will not readily perforate like steel.

They shouldn’t allow production that allows premature corrosion. Mine is 2 years old. 29k miles. @@CheaperJeeperTV Its same as Fluid film spray just longer lasting works on both steel and aluminum
Nice. Unfortunately though, the corrosion of the aluminum is occurring beneath the paint layer and bubbling the paint. So I’m not sure it solves the problem with the aluminum corroding. It sounds great for under spray for the frame though. Thanks.
Even the class action lawsuit is a scam...I filled out form and it says "we can only help CA residents "..wtf. why do they even have other states in the pullup menu
I'm in Canada, so I will need to look into it myself.
stupid magnesium tailgate and aluminum brackets and metal bolts is causing galvanic reactions! This is the first time jeep is widely using aluminum...no topical treatment will stop this you have to isolate the metals from each other like removing bolts/parts and painting them, or using plastic bushings, isolators. Lubricant films in-between surfaces always fails.

Just dropped my 2018 Wrangler off to the dealer....Pumpkin Orange...I ONLY noticed corrosion after I started taking it to a commercial car wash. The corrosion has NOTHING to do with salt. It is all about how they painted it to begin with. Jeep subs out the repair to a local body shop (at least my dealer does). Spoke to the painter and he told me these are becoming a regular repair for his shop. He indicate it was bad prep at assembly. And also told me that car washes are the number one culprit for the rust surfacing. The touchless are fine (like the ones in gas stations) but the commercial ones with large brushes you drive through force water in chemicals in tiny crevices that then cause the rust. I tend to believe him as that's EXACTLY what happened to me. I got the idea that this is NOT covered for lifetime as some others have indicated but is limited to the factory 3 year 36k miles....
Hi Travis, I have only hand washed my Jeep. I’ve never taken it to those heavy duty car washes you speak of. I agree it’s likely an issue caused my poor prep. FCA know of this issue but are is being silent. It’s unfortunate as their poor job with the paint costs us when it comes to resale value. It isn’t covered under unlimited warranty so eventually you’ll start seeing a lot of JL’s with bubbly paint everywhere. This should be a class action lawsuit.
@@CheaperJeeperTV So I got my jeep back yesterday and it looks great. The service associate basically told me to "WATER THE **** OUT OF IT" for the next 18 months as that's how long the warranty is extended. You can sort of tell where they painted it...The took all the rust bubbling up out, then blended it. It looks good. I looked at the work order it was 2900 dollars...for 2 doors. Crazy. If it comes back, to be honest I will sell it and buy a Bronco...I love my Jeep, but I am too old to deal with crap like this that drives me nuts....I could deal with the hinges but this rust was on the door...there is NO hiding that....If I see it again I will post and give every one an update
Hey Travis, I hear you. Mind you, be careful, as the Bronco may have its own issues, and yes, please post back here if there are any updates. Cheers.
Cheep Wrangler not Jeep Wrangler JL
Cheap. 🤷🏻♂️
Don’t get the bronco!
lol..No worries.
My jeep has this starting on the round part of the hinges. Stupid Jeep...hurry up Toyota and make the new 4runner already so I can trade this 2020 Heap in. .
Hey c, I feel your pain. The 4Runner would be an appealing option. Cheers.
Just a bad design..period!
Hey I appreciated your feedback!
Cheers
Could you talk any slower…?
Yeah, I tried to improve that along the way. I think I did better in the subsequent corrosion video. ua-cam.com/video/HfFAwH6v9Yc/v-deo.htmlsi=HVCcYuBTZP4TLq2Z
