Tinmam, i went against my better judgement and bought a 2017 model used CS-590 from a pawn shop that looked very used and the bar and chain that was on it was worthless so i had to buy that as well. In all i have about $260 into the saw. I also have a CS-400 that seemed to run better and cut faster than this 590. I took the 590 apart just to see what kind of condition the cylinder head, piston, rings etc was with no intentions of porting. I thought why not just try porting it a little whilr watching your videos. The only thing i had was the little diamond cut fittings like you used for the fine blending at the bottom of the port. So obviously my grinding was going to take forever without going to harbor freight. Anyway, so i decided just to very slightly port it and angle the transfers. I didnt grind nearly as much off as you because i dont have near the experience with chainsaws as you do. I didnt expect to be able to tell any difference in performance. I also deleted the gasket between the case and cylinder head and used Moto Seal or whatever you recommended(that i did goto the store to get). I also opened up my muffler exactly like you did but not as much. Then i assembled and cranked her right up... all i can say is wow. Totally different chainsaw. Revs wayyyy higher and cuts wayyyyy faster. Im blown away!

I’m doing good Tinman. That was a marathon Echo CS590 build but you stuck with it and dialed it in. I have a 590 but I’m happy the way it runs out of the box. Keep the content coming as it’s all starting to make sense the more you talk about how it’s done.

So good to hear that 590 sounding happy again😃 after you went back and raised the upper transfers, I had a gut feeling that was the solution. Hopefully she rips in the wood now🤞 after experiencing the gain an Ironhorse style pipe made over the modded stock muffler on my CS-590, I'd like to see a pipe tested on it! On mine, I used 1.25" OD & 1" OD both 18ga wall. Thought it'd be too big for 60cc.

I have a CS 600 p for 6 years or so been trouble free did a muffler mod with no back pressure and it was on the rev limiter even very rich had to redo my mod with back pressure and it's fantastic now so it seems that thay need some back pressure to stay off the rev limiter my saw is set 1/4 turn out on h jet thay have a bypass circuit so I think you can run them as lean as you can and thay will still be somewhat rich my plug is med brown now at this setting just my experience I think the jet change out is what thay need to make the carburetor adjustable good luck on your port work I think tin man has figured it out this time

this is late in the time line but having just watched this video I feel so good for you...the thrill of winning a long wrestling match! Learning has a price, you paid and will profit handsomely. Power saw college! Thinking about this, the trouble did not start until after a few heat cycles probably because the rings set in and you got a much stronger vacuum creating way more venturi draw. The add on carb from a bigger saw did not help, it just dumped more and more fuel than the saw could handle. You guys do this stuff by the seat of your pants, it is an art. You have no air flow and sophisticated engineering aids to assist...just your thought processes and observations. Hats off to ya for excellent problem solving. The small primary transfer ports now we can understand....they limit the strong induction designed into the saw until heavy power demand is made.

We used to call it “case burping “ back in the 1970’s when we were trying to get International Trials bush bikes to have lots of bottom end torque with good rev build to dig quickly when needed . I had a Yamaha , I think it took 2 or three cylinders to get it right , it was a 460cc single and was killer good in the Bush ride on the east slope of the Rockies in Northern Alberta we used to ride into BC , helicopter fuel drops the big 490 huskies we used to say they turned gasoline into noise !

I see you had to put the decomp valve back in. I looked but couldn’t find plugs that fit the Echo cylinders. I ended up using a oil drain plug from a Honda GX200. Had to cut it down on a lathe but it works great. It’s a 10X1.25 thread instead of the more common 10X1.0 used on Stihl and Husqvarna.

Wow, great channel! I am glad i came across it when researching my 590 Timberwolf. I am going to do the muffler mod as you did. Is it worth adding the new 620 coil with the stock carb or is the carb upgrade required? I plan on running a 28" skip tooth for cutting cookies to make table tops with the 20" as the primary cutting bar. Keep up the great work. The intake needs tuning. Either a smaller intake port or less intake timing. Blowdown shouldn't really change it unless the charge is having trouble getting through the transfers and not scavenging the case. If you have to reduce your blowdown, then your transfers need to be bigger so they can scavenge the case.

Hey tinman, would LOVE to see you just for fun use your porting skills on a cheap weed eater and walk us through it. I think plenty of guys are afraid to risk messing up a good saw by attempting to port it, but string trimmers are about the cheapest gas engines you can find used anywhere. Can regularly pick them up on fb marketplace or off the side of the road for free, so would be awesome to get some practice and learn the concepts a bit on those before trying on a saw
