Phil Ivey For me studying away from the table has to do with me just thinking about the hands I played. 1. Thinking about the way I played the hands. 2. Thinking about what my opponent was thinking. 3. The different amounts they bet in different situations. 4. What I could do against them next time? 5. What they think of me as a player. Do they think I’m tight or aggressive? 6. What are they going to try and get away with against me next time? So really well when I'm studying is more thinking about ways to play against my Opponent the next time I play against them. Joe Patrick, what do you think? Patrick Exactly, this is how you learn. When you play a session of poker you can go back and look at some key hands. 1. Why did you make the bad call? 2. Why you didn't see he had a hand? Why did you think he was bluffing? This guy doesn’t bet big 2 hands in a row. This is how you learn from your mistakes. When you are in the same situation next time you can say here I am again. Try to make a better decision. You can read all the books and watch the videos, BUT if you don’t do the thinking in your heard (process it, you don’t learn). I never read any books nothing and that was the best thing because i had to figure it out myself. You can read how to play a hand because there is 10 ways to play the hand based on your opponent. You have to have your fundamentals right in poker. You have to play good basic poker. All the analyzing and studying is thinking about your opponents and what they like to do and what you can Do next time against them. When you are playing poker you have to be so focused for this moment, this moment is your opponent bluffing? What does he have right now? You can’t study when you play, you have to just focus on the moment. When it’s over and you do something else and you have time, you zoom out in your head and think about all the Situations and try to fix something and learn how to play better next time with these players. This is how you learn. This is the right way Phil What maters the most when you are playing against someone is the history you have between each other. That’s why live is so different then tournament and online, you have seen them play hands and they have seen you play hands, you are able to make adjustments off what they have seen from you and you adjust off what you see from them. When they bluff they may behave a certain way or when they are strong they behave a certain way. If they have a medium hand and are trying to get value they bet a certain amount. You start watching things and they start to develop certain patterns and you look to exploit these patterns later. The only way to exploit it is to be watching and paying attention as to what is going on so you can do it later. (Study there play later) Joe What do you guys think about something Patrick said, from learning from your mistakes? Patrick When you win and win hands, if you play a game with players you are much better at, and you keep winning and making right decisions, you don’t really Start to get into the game and analyze, but when you start losing the pots, they stick in your head. All the pots you’re losing, when you are happy to win and things are rolling you don’t get better, you don’t get better playing worse players. You get better playing better players who are outplaying you and you see what they are doing and you get experience. Phil What helps me get better is exactly what Patrick said, when you are playing in a game there are so many times where you make a bad decision and then later on you start thinking about the different variable, the decision become clear to you as to what you should have done, you think about it and process it and the next time you play you are able to make a better decision based on what is the feel of the hand or the opponent, the feel of the opponent , what type of energy are they giving off, a lot of things come into play to make the correct call or bet or play. It’s really important to be able to process this information. The way you do that is to write the hand down and think about the hand and what you could have done differently. Joe I know you guys do this but how about the situation when you could have made a bigger bet on the turn or gone all in and made more money. Because you can be winning and make money but you actually could have one double if you would have played better. Phil That is a huge part of poker and especially no limit (big bet poker) is knowing the correct amounts to bet knowing when you can get someone to call all in vs betting short of that. Maybe you bluffed but you bet too much because they were going to call any bet, so you should have bluffed less. That’s why I say no one plays a really plays a perfect session, you just never know what perfect is, you might bet X amount when they would have called more, or they would have folded for less. No one plays a perfect session, you just want to play as near to perfect as you can.
These guys have played so much poker at such a high level, there's not much that they can say that would help the average player/UA-cam viewer. It's not the same kind of "studying away from the table" that most people would do, or even need to do to improve. They are so far past the fundamental basics, odds, percentages of the game, etc. For them, it's all about instincts, intricacies, fine tuning, and honing & perfecting their craft at a level that most of us would only hope to some day reach.
Knowing what hands your appointment can be playing from their position. How they are playing the hand what the board looks like and the probability of them having a hand they are representing. I never really understood the “read the player” thing, I’ve meet players that play the hand and not the person, I’ve meet people that play the person more than the hand. But at my age I completely understand it now and it is a powerful ability to be able to read your opponents vibe, and how they have been playing in certain situations, put that with the ability to narrow the probabilities of the hands they can have from their positions is a good starting point. Don’t be distracted at the table, give an effort of focus on how the players are acting and playing, this is huge. And like Phil said “how the other players are perceiving you and your game at the table.” Is a big part of the game.
People need to see it to believe it. If you show down three winners in a row people will be more likely to fold the next time. They don't want to pay you off like the prior three players did. The more hands you win at showdown the higher the probability of them folding to your aggression in future hands. Same goes for bluffing. If you get caught in a bluff a few times while not showing any winning hands at showdown the probability of getting a bluff through decreases. Poker is a lot about playing people off there perceptions. Observing the players and there overall tendencies is very important as well. Some players default to over calling. Some default to over folding. Observe the players and there tendencies then formulate a strategy that will be good against them.
Poker, is such a great complex beautiful game that not even when 2 of the top best in the world players try to construct an explanation they find it difficult to describe the thinking process of it all words can't do the game justice it's all internal .instict it's all in the moment.

Oborra, red baron, sinKarma these players dominate the high stakes online and Phil ivey, Patrick, Hansen all those guy don't mess in the high stakes online poker because they would loose so much money... 😂 otb red baron is considered the best poker player of the world he has crushed all the stakes of poker available, tourney and cash. These online players say they don't even find it challenging to play against live high stakes because they think live poker is garbage so bad that they don't feel the need to play against these old day poker millionaires, even players like fedor that made what negreanu and ivey have in live cashes in more than 2 decades he made it in 3 years. I mean why do you think no one plays 400/800 200/400 online anymore? Because they know 100% they would loose their money.
Ivey and Antonius are 2 of the biggest winners ever online, Ivey is the biggest winner... these 2 follow the big action and that big action isn't online anymore, if it was they would be straight in there playing & winning.
It was a huge mistake to put the watermark. I know you must have been worried about others trying to steal the video and post it on their channel but it detracts so much that it's hardly worth watching.
These two were a poor choice for this particular video because they were 2 of the most naturally gifted players of all time! They didn't need to study on their way up they had an innate poker sense that 1 in a million has. A lot more useful person to speak to about this FOR THE ORDINARY MAN would be someone like LuckyChewy or Dan Smith...
MrBeatboxmasta I don't think you know what tone deafness means. The timbre is what defines a persons voice, not so much the pitch. A tone deaf person has no trouble differentiating peoples voices.
I respect these players at the top of their game, but jesus christ, some people have dedicated their entire lives to a stupid card game. Essentially human leeches living off of gambling. I'd love the top pros to do something to give back. I don't mean handing a cheque to some charity that pays its bosses $$$ and raises money for 'awareness'. Just something like alleviating a little poverty in a community. Go pay a few peoples small but significant debts (a hundred dollar credit card debt is crippling to some people). I'd just really love to see how such smart people would approach the concept of giving back. Maybe for the cost of a few blinds, you get to bring a group of people out of living in great indignity.
