- For $50 it's hard to argue with the Moto E and Lumia 635.

With so much focus on high end smartphones I wanted to find out what you can get for a tenth of the price. With the Microsoft Lumia 635 and Motorola Moto E 2nd Generation you can get a surprisingly decent smartphone with a five megapixel camera, solid build quality and totally adequate performance.

The Moto E is surprisingly fluid and smooth with Nougat.
cm14 ftw
theSyd I'm watching this on a Moto E 2nd gen
***** how did you get 7.1 on it? CyanogenMod?
ABALL1ST1CSQU1D Gaming probably. But Cyanogen is now LineageOS. There are already official builds for the E 2015.
Do you have a link?
For some reason I want to try out Windows Phone really badly.
+Peyton for ppl who work is better than android i love how i can edit reports and stuff on windows office its nice but android have more games and stuff thats all windows phone works for me have all the apps i use and let me work with my stuff on office and upload to my cloud drive so there will be on my desktop pc also
+Peyton I have the one in the video, its pretty good if you don't mind the OS
If you do get the lumia 1520. Great phone.
+Susan Tuna please use commas and periods. Looked like a run on sentences.
+Peyton I felt the same then I bought the Lumia 640. If you wanna try it, get the 640. It's leaps better than the 635. (Loving WP by the way.)
It's crazy how 50 bucks can get you a decent smartphone. Always blows my mind.
I just got a Alcatel One Touch Idol 3 for 40 bucks and it is wonderful. It might be 3 years old, but I think its the best deal for a 40 dollar phone there is.
Ou8ts into perspective how bad apple is rippibg off all their customers
waiting for an updated 500$ gaming pc
+GameKid me too
+GameKid pcpartpicker.com/guide/ You're welcome.
TheDIYProps NOPE...i'm waiting for austin to do it
+GameKid Username checks out
+GameKid You might as well build your own.
$50? They're over triple the price in Australia, and our dollar buys $US0.70.
+T.E.D. de Medici i'm in canada and it's 150$ cad (tax not included)...
+Arvin199318 I think its 250 from WIND
+T.E.D. de Medici Its $175 here in guatemala
+Luis De Santiago Dude there isn't any spiders, it's the same as the UK or America or Canada, it's super rare to see anything even close to being deadly, and if you do, it runs away from you. Stop with the stereotype, Australia is lot more luxury than any other country.
Luis De Santiago I give up, foreigners are too annoying.
1:18 It's actually 540p. The vertical pixels of the display in landscape are the metric that gets used. Ex: 1920x1080 is 1080p.
Mike Kunz Yes, but it's still called 1080p.
+Alex Efimov lol I just commented the same thing. I was curious if anyone else noticed :D
+Mike Kunz phone still uses the vertical x horizontal.
ikr
+Alex Efimov What about 4k? 3840×2160
Nice video. It's cool to finally see non-top of the line/flagship phones getting coverage.
4 years later..I miss the Windows phones and wish they come back
It's probably worth it to buy an older, used phone that was once a heavy hitter. Especially if you want to take decent pictures or videos. Nice video though.
+ElyTech That's an interesting question actually...could be an interesting comparison.
+Manley Evangelista (on UA-cam) Exactly! Just seems like a bigger bang for your buck as long as you don't buy something that has been abused.
+Austin Evans Yep. I'd take my old Galaxy S3 over those for sure.
+Austin Evans im still rocking a nexus 4 just got it recently, one bad thing about used phone though is durability and similar, i dropped the phone from chair height and now half of my touch isnt working
+MafionzoR well to be honest even with new phones durability can be an issue. smartphones in general these days are not very strong either way. i had a htc one m8 brand new and i dropped it and the screen cracked. very few smartphones are actually quite strong
I have a 2gb (on the hard drive, not the ram), and I've just barely surviving with it, so to the people complaining about having an old iPhone, be thankful for what you have XD
+Zain Syed Riaz Living on the edge.
XD you replied, but yep. I got an n64 running on it, so all my life needs are complete
+Austin Evans The EDGE (s6 edge)
+Zain Syed Riaz b*tch please I only have 1 gb hard drive storage and most of it's not even usable
+Zain Syed Riaz

the audio on this video is absolutely top class. whatever you're doing keep doing it
Holy! I was just talking to my friend about these $50 smartphones from 7-11/Walmart etc... Great video Austin!
3:02 what are those!!!????!?!
+Ismaile Yousufi I think they're shoes but I may be mistaken.
lmao ikr
+Ismaile Yousufi

AAAAAAAAAAAA
+RumourRS calm down fuckboy
I actually expected to see a comment like this once I watched the video
At 3:25, you said Moto G instead of Moto E lol.
Loool, ikr!
Mistake?
Well there are Moto g phones, I'm using one. So he probably just got them mixed up by accident.
Outro is a killer. Great video man.
Finally a video 📼 on Lumia device thanks austin😃. Will wait for more of Lumia videos.
My day to day phone was an iPhone 5s, I'm in the process of upgrading to the iPhone 6s but I don't buy the phones on contract I just them outright, therefore I had to sell my iPhone 5s about 3 weeks ago before the price dropped with the new 6s being announced. I'm using my spare phone which is the Nokia lumina 520 as yeah it had nothing app wise compared to iOS and android but it is really fast for its specs, like it's quite ridiculous how fast. You can fly through the OS and stock apps. Windows has been optimising operating systems for years and years so I assume that's why their phone OS is really good. Their is so many features they still need to add but with time it will be one hell of a solid OS.
WassellThatAbout I'm running a Moto e4 but I'm upgrading to a iPhone SE
Windows Phone died. I loved mine but after experiencing the lack of apps and it breaking I didn't want a new one. Then Windows announced they would stop pushing updates.
Orv not
I used to have the moto E 2nd gen it was an amazing phone for its price in my opinion
sounds like your doing good Austin! hope all is well!
I picked up a 2nd Gen Moto e for my dad to replace his old Droid X, and it's a fantastic little phone.
I haven't noticed any lag at all yet, and he's had it for almost 5 months.
Decent camera, in good lighting as well.
Smartphone buying tip no. 1 NEVER BUY A WINDOWS PHONE... never... I am regretting it after buying it... It is buggy as hell and app development is very less.
And there are very less apps too. I would highly recommend iOS or Android but never windows. Tbh windows phone look stunning and interface is also not that bad but bugs and less app development takes all the fun.
Yes
You sir are an idiot.
Why? It's truth what he's saying. My girlfriend had a Windows Phone and switched to Android because the lack of apps, she used it just for web searching and such, while everything else she preferred to do on her tablet. You can argue Windows 10 will improve on the lack of apps matter, but it's not good yet.
Sven is either a troll or he is just mad he has a windows phone... xD Yeah windows does suck ATM a lot of people have bad experiences with it and even my 14 year old friend wants an android so bad since he can't do ANYTHING with windows phone. It's as if he never even had a phone. He couldn't play the same apps as us and it kinda sucked for him. :(
Moto G 2nd is super solid phone. Actually I can't believe how good it is coming from oneplus one. GPS and cellular connectivity are top notch, they actually work. And to be honest I don't really see difference in snapdragon 410 and 801, I don't play games though. Camera is also surprisingly decent IMO, it just works. And top all that it is rugged and don't mind dirt or water. Only thing slightly bothering is screen resolution, videos don't look quite as crispy but colors are very decent IMO. Overall I can't find better value for a phone, worth every penny.
Moto E* :>
+PeeHooo you know you can edit comments. you dont need to reply to yourself.
Yeah, I know. But can't do that on my youtube app which I use. :>
I just bought the Moto E, should come in the mail tomorrow. Can't wait to check it out.
It's been 8 months and I'm still using the Moto E. I can't get an SD card to mount so storage has been a big issue, but the experience has been pretty good overall.
wow dude that was actually more helpful than I thought I've been thinking of ditching my note 2 and getting a cheaper phone. thanks homie 👍👍
Hey guys this is Austin
Yo steve jobs whats up
cαstro _ sup bro
+Reverse SteveJobs hey austin this is guys
+Reverse SteveJobs I'm on a mountain
+Reverse SteveJobs That Steve jobs the flash reference in your name tho
I used to have the moto e
It was good
I really wasn't expecting this to come from this channel... but I'm really really glad you did this... now do a $100 phone?
I had the Moto e you show here. It's not a bad phone. Definitely low end and "budget" but it does it's job. The camera isn't anything to cheer about, but again, it's a budget phone.
Had it for a year or so before I decided to switch to a more modern recent phone, but I still have it. The battery life is fantastic. Seriously, I haven't charged it in a week & I still have like 75%
I had no laggy problems either.
I only still have my Lumia as I can download songs for free to listen to anywhere without having to you a youtube converter like Apple
Dat monster cat shirt doh
I have had the moto e for one year and it never lagged and was always constant. Great phone
@Vlad Pandele same here, changing colorful covers are great, windows phone is realy snappy
I use an LG Volt, which I got for 40$ at Best Buy on sale, it works for me, runs nice and has a pretty good looking screen.
+Sdudyoy N Same here, LG Volt only mine for $50. Love it, I would never spend any more than that on a phone.
+sized4spills same but for 200$...😂
+Sdudyoy N two of my cousins has the Volt. It's pretty good.
+Sdudyoy N The same but 50 on Ebay T.T
I got it for $180 and trust me, its gonna be a pain after several months. Im getting an iphone 6s next month and I cant wait to get it
Google apps on windows phone is Google's fault. They don't want to support Windows phone.
+Javier B A Yep. The reason doesn't really matter though, the end result is that you don't get Google apps on Windows Phone.
Yes but google apps are the most important thing in smart phone...too bad for windows...
not really I find onedrive better than google drive and you get office for free.
Javier B A but youtube and google mail are essential...
+polychronio You can use outlook for gmail and tubecast for youtube
Glad to see that Austin is a fellow Monstercat fan
Great vid, Austin!
This world is mad, 20 years ago, a mobile phone cost almost $3000, now you can get a SMARTPHONE with $50
+Iziash Suklan (MrMagicSquirrel) at 3:24 he said moto G instead of moto E
it is 540p vs 480p screen, not the 960p vs 854p
Man, I've had the Moto e and the updated Lumia 640 LTE. Both were great phones. The Lumia is definitely the better of the two simply because it still receives updates while the Moto hasn't aged as well, but is still usable.
When my 2nd Gen Moto G broke, I used my sister's 1st Gen Moto E and it was okay as a replacement but was glad when I finally decided to upgrade to the Moto X.
SHOULD I GET A MOTO E AS MY FIRST ANDROID PHONE
Sure man it's good and fast because of the stock android
Timothy L ya it's a good cheap phone to introduce u to android
Matthew Cummins Do you think it'll be better to go with a used Nexus (say the 5, or maybe even 5X), or a Moto E/G? I actually recently bought a used Galaxy S4 to try it out, and I hate it lol... probably bc touchwiz, and bc it's too old?
Definitely buy Nexus 5 or 5X
Joum4ni aight, I think I'll sell the S4 and go with a Nexus 5 then, thanks
okay where the hell do you get these phones for 50 bucks ? here in germany they both cost almost 3 times as much... on amazon mind you, they are probably even more expensive in stores
+Hunter Rodrigez well he lives in the US and its the moto e first generation
taz874 still why are these smartphones so dirt cheap over there?
+Hunter Rodrigez those phones are subsidized by prepaid phone companies. so its not an unlocked moto e. it wont work with anybother service provider
dembryants well he could have mentioned ANYWHERE in the video that these phones are not unlocked...
+Hunter Rodrigez yeah I dont understand why he didnt either.
I would go for the build of the Lumia but love the stock android experience of the Moto E. I really love that moto devices arent that expensive but have a great experience.
New Windows phones coming out in October sporting 2k Resolution screens with 3BGS or RAM and Octocore processors and IRIS scanners. I can't wait.
i have the lumia 635 :)
when i saw the moto e box i was like SPRIIIIINTTT!
lol
Great video Austin!
+Austin Evans do a gaming build guide again please? I really love them a lot as I planing to get a new computer now. And you videos help a lot and i miss them.
i really really like windows phone, the interface is much nicer and yes, they run way snapier on lower end specs, i used to have a lumia, but the app support made me change to android (running a used HTC M7 i got for 80 bucks 2 years ago) i plan to get a newer windows phone later, any recomendations?
TheBigupz Lumia 950 (will be release soon) or 640 :)
TheBigupz The next flagships 950/950xl are your best bet if you're looking for the best windows phone you can get but be aware that these phones won't come out until late October / early November
Brian Gallardo not looking for flagship, im more than fine with a mid end phone (i do actually use the camera flash alot) i would assume something in the 7xx series would be mid range?
+TheBigupz a Lumia 750 is also rumored coming
The Moto E is a $119, so why is it in this video?
+OLBastholm Moto E gen one, and he lives in the US. $50
+Chris B 2:38
+Chris B The video CLEARLY says Gen 2. Which is $120.
I saw a moto e in Walmart website for 50 but it only said moto e I don't know if it's second gen. On other websites its 120.
MASTERRELIC relic I wonder if Walmart sells locked models. The unlocked 4G LTE model from Motorla themselves is $150.
I own a Lumia 635, and I'm very happy with it. If you go up to the slightly newer Lumia 640, you get a lot of the features that the 635 missed out on, such as the front facing camera, camera flash, higher quality camera, slightly larger screen, and more processing power. But I've got an ASUS K01a Android Tablet to supplement where the Lumia lacks. Unlike some people, i prefer to have 2 devices. One for mainly text and call, not many apps and such to clutter it. Then a separate device (previously an iPod, now the tablet) to compensate for what the phone can't do or what I don't want it to do. It's saved me a lot on data as well, because I have no need to check Facebook or my e-mail on the go. If I do, I can turn cellular data on for a second, check it, then turn it off. Then I use the tablet whenever I have access to Wi-Fi. It may not work for other people who always need to be glued to their phones, but it works for me better than my single iPhone ever did.
I am running CM 21.1(official) on Moto E 2nd Gen. It works great. Definitely worth the buy.
540p on the Moto E actually.
540p
MercilessSinnerPL Thanks.
"And a bunch of manuals for you to never read"
I spent two years with a Lumia 710, but lacks many applications. Now I'm one year with a Moto G2 and I'm very happy, and I think the Moto E very good.
I have a motto e and it has no problem in normal uses and for that price it is really a rock star
Are You serious ??? 50$??? In my country it's minimum 100$ for these smartphones !!!!
+elektronika True these phones are around $170nz
azerty_rp currency is different in US of A
Even these ones that are old?
Hey Moto E, this is guys and today I'll be reviewing Austin!

You should do a comparison of how older high end phones compare to today. I recently upgraded my 70 dollar LG smart phone to a used Note 3 and it's been great!
Typing this on my Moto E that I got for a home TV control and a music player for snowboarding. Plus it only cost me $10 at Best Buy on Black Friday!
Awesome shirt man!
I just bought the Motorola E. I literally only got because of the 4G and WiFi hotspot capabilities. It sits by the side of my computer. It does the job nicely for that.
I have a feeling with Windows 10 Mobile and the Universal Windows Platform, the Windows Store is likely to grow rapidly, since developers don't need to develop multiple apps for different devices, but only need to make one app that can scale depending on the device.
Thanx Austin i'm on my way to get the Moto E
I actually want to pick up the lumia now. Just in order to test some apps and stuff!
I like the new outro (or has it been there for awhile and I'm just noticing it now?)
I went from a Nexus 5 to Moto E because I was really curious to try Republic Wireless' $10 talk and text plan...and do everything offline or over wifi. So far it's been a decent experience and it's saving me a ton monthly.
I'm not a heavy gamer and had crappy service at work anyway, but I was paying for unlimited data and barely using a gb per month.
Anyway, my point is the Moto E is not bad at all for a good price, but I will probably upgrade in a few months.
Your shirt at 0:42 is awesome! :D
You do get free oflline navigation with the lumia 635 at least in the Netherlands which is why i picked up that phone.
I was expecting that ending Where Austin Evan was making funny sound of the car video in this video
Thank you Austin I'm gonna have to add the Moto to my $50 collection.
My first "smart" phone was a Kyocera Event for $50. Turned into a paperweight in less than two months. Next I got a $60 Pantech Pocket, it was really slow on Gingerbread but it was way more reliable, a few months later, I finally decided to get a good phone, the Moto G first gen when it came out. My Dad went into the T-Mobile store, but he didn't walk out with a Moto G, he was holding a Nexus 5! I was so happy. Seeing how phones are for $50 today, I probably would not have gotten a flagship if my first phone was like the Moto E, good job Motorola.
I actually really like the Moto E front camera. The colors on it are nice.
I have the 635 and it is a fantastic phone, highly recommended it
I have a Lumia 610 and I love how long it lasts and how rarely it crashes.
@Austin Evans great video the moto e is a great device for the price. what happen to PC builds?
Before i got my iPhone 5S back in August, i had a Nokia Lumia that I got on Amazon for $100. It was an amazing phone for all things that a smartphone can do. The only (but major) shortcoming was the app selection, which is why i ended up getting an iPhone when i could finally afford one.
I have Lumia 735 and love it. On contract I paid $40 and have no been disappointed. I have an iPad 2 that was won from a Giveaway so the not as many apps do not bother me. The 735 has a nice matte feel and just overall has a greater feel to it. It is so much more responsive compared to a 635 and I have no complaints.
Nice job on the comparison... I would add another $29 and get a Lumia 640 with At&t ...it's so much better then the 635.
I like your worth it series!!! n this video was awesome... :-) :-)
Hey Austin do you prefer updating from iphone 4s to iphone 5c......m getting a great deal....!!!
if u can do it bro
I would go for the Lumia 635. Just bcuz it's a different feel compared to Android or IOS. It runs good for everyday simple use.
Hey Austin, could you do a video, where you look for a cheap ipod alternative (android or otherwise) ?
Not to mention the Moto E 2nd Gen has Gorilla Glass 3. I used to work in the Mobile dept. at BestBuy, and saw smashed up Lumias all the time, but never saw a scratch on a Moto E. Also the Moto E has a water-resistant coating for light splashes. And the photos shown here from the Moto E look WAY better than those from the Lumia!
I have the 5c it's an awesome phone, you just have to be really careful or get a good case for it... The screen cracks really easily
Picked up the 2nd gen moto E for $35 at target and it's not too bad so far
Hey Austin you should do another video about a gaming PC!
Digging the Monstercat shirt. :D
I had the Lumia it worked fine for me, I have a IPhone 6 plus now but if I had to use the Lumia I wouldn't mind
You should consider looking at some BLU phones if you are doing Budget phones Austin. They are very reliable and modestly priced.
I had a Lumia for almost 2 years and one thing you didn't talk about is how durable it is. That phone can be dropped face first onto concrete without a case and will not even have a crack in the screen (Granted the outer shell thing did break a bit but I got over it pretty quickly). It took those 2 years to get even 1 crack on the actual screen and that's when I did get a new phone but still that's one thing you might want to consider if you're looking at a Lumia.
I have a Samsung Galaxy J1 2016 and it works really well, honestly. It was also $50
