Yeah, that's true. But still even for music 2GB won't get you very far. I have an 8GB iPod nano from the late 2000's and I filled that up pretty quick. Besides these days you can get a SanDisk MP3 player for about $30 on Amazon, that has 8GB of built in storage, a screen, better battery life than the shuffle, and it has a micro SD card slot for expandable storage. I can't think of any reason someone would pay $20 more for the iPod shuffle, other than for iTunes support.

Right? What jumps out to me most about how outdated iPods feel is the total lack of streaming music (except on tough). The nano doesn't even support offline Apple Music.

-The iPod Nano didn’t _come out_ in 2012, it was last _updated_ in 2012. That was actually after _years_ of updates.
-The iPod Nano doesn’t run any version of iOS, it just follows the same design principles.
-The iPod Shuffle was last functionally updated in 2010, but it was refreshed in 2012 with new colours.
-The iPod Touch was last _updated_ in 2015, not _released_ in 2015.

You’re not giving those other iPods a chance. I personally still use my 4th Gen iPod Shuffle very frequently. The sound quality is actually really good (provided you have decent headphones), and 2GB actually doesn’t fill up as fast as you might think when you’re only putting music on it. Meanwhile, the Nano has a nice nostalgic design to it, and I think it’s a pretty cool throwback to when Apple actually put time and care into their products. I think it’s amazing that these products were maintained for so long.

Another reason for an ipod touch (and the reason I got one) is for imessage. My main phone is an android and I have no intention of switching to iPhone (they feel very limiting to me) but I still wanted to stay in contact with friends who lived abroad.
Ipod was a nice, cheap option and imessage was very handy. That plus the music not cutting out during calls made it my dedicated media device

I understand there are alternatives like WhatsApp but I have friends who have cut themselves away from stuff like that for the sake of their mental health, who live in other countries and use iPhone.

iPods are great if you want a dedicated music player. Something small portable for running, in the gym, on the go, etc. I have a iPod nano 7th gen and I would get the latest iPod touch if mine ever stopped working.

Phil Thomas pretty sure that's because of the metal bars that are needed on any device that's going to connect to cellular. It's like an antenna that strengthens the bandwidth you receive. Since iPod touches are purely wifi based, there's no need for that, so there's a sleeker design. (At least I think that's why... lol)

I'm not talking about the ipod 5 & 6, we're talking about the design comparison between the ipod and iphone, which are pretty different. and yes, I'm sure it does have something to do with the antennas but they don't take up that much room, and I don't see why the couldn't implement it witht he same design. It would just be painted the same color as the rest of the metal design and you wouldn't even know it was there.
I think the iPod Touch is just for parents to buy their kids who are too young for a _phone_ but an _iPod_ would be ok.

I use my iPod daily. As a music teacher and choir director, it is much easier to keep all my music on an iPod than a phone.

Makes total sense if you wanna be weightless. A smartwatch could be another option as well. They have ones for under $20 that can play music.

I actually still like my 80 GB iPod Classic I got for my birthday in 2007. Changed the battery a couple years ago and it's still running. It was the one thing they did better than Microsoft. Still works great for storing podcasts and lots of music so you don't need to rely on streaming over LTE. When I was on vacation a couple months ago driving around Lake Michigan, the cell service was really hit or miss.

darkstonecastle I remember receiving an iPod shuffle as a gift many years ago (maybe around 2008 or so), but I was extremely unexcited about it because I had a cheaper and more capable device with similar dimensions-the Sansa Clip, made by SanDisk. It had a removable clip, FM Radio (and a recording feature), voice recording, playlist ability, and a tiny two-tone screen! One of these was only around $60 and was much easier to use and more versatile than the iPod shuffle has ever been, even today.
I still use my iPod shuffle in 2022, it’s the best device to just go for a run and disconnect from the madness of notifications, social media, and excess of information and over connectivity. I would totally start going back to simpler devices and simpler, richer life where technology is a tool and not what controls our lives.

The shuffle is secretly an amazing product. One of the cheapest things apple sells and amazing for if you're exercising and don't want to bring your phone or fall off your bike when you're looking for the right album.

Just rediscovered my old iPod shuffle today and I have to say I miss old school apple. In my opinion the shuffle is really convenient as it is minimal and clean looking. It reminds me of the Apple Watch but no touch screen or strap. The minimal design and budget price is perfect and if it had Bluetooth somehow then I wouldn’t mind buying a new one even in 2019.

I am an artist but can’t draw me too! I love it!!! I will be sad when they stop making them! I store all my music on my iPod touch (I’m a DJ) as a backup in case my laptop has a glitch etc and I don’t have to use my phone or the storage in it to take up all the space my music takes up

Well I use my iPod almost everyday because it's way better to have a whole device just dedicated to listening to music, even if it's an iPod touch. It saves space on your phone and if you prefer android and have an Android phone, you'll be able to experience android and iOS together
+Noah R-And personally, I would rather have an MP3 player that only serves to play music, and nothing else, sometimes you just want a device that can largely, only play music instead of cluttering it between a phone, apps, and everything else people stuff in now, in a way, MP3 players are like a newer version of a personal, portable radio, and it should stay that way. The only real problem I have with MP3 players on the whole is that they are a dime a dozen and it's very hard to figure out what kind of quality you are going to get from each MP3 player without buying it and trying it out yourself. Otherwise, the Apple MP3s have a remarkable longevity, especially the now beloved IPOD Classic, the sound, for the most part on them, remains very good, even with more expensive "higher-resolution" MP3 players and overall, they were built with quality in mind and they last a long time, arguably more than the newer MP3 players.

what I think a lot of people could enjoy is listening to music without interruption, small form factor of the shuffle, more storage, touch screen, go for the 6th gen nano, want something like a phone, but without calls, or texts, or just without notifications, get a touch and don't get social media, if you're okay with getting texts, calls, and other notifications, a phone is perfectly okay, it is nice to have uninterrupted music every now and then

I think Ipod touch 7 is coming out in 2018. My reasons? It will have been 3 years. The Ipod touch 6 came out 3 years after the touch 5 in 2012. Also, Ipod touch 6 got a price reduction in June or July. The Ipod touch 5 also got a price cut before a new model came out. This makes me believe they are clearing inventory for a newer model. Also, last time I heard, they are still generating over a billion dollars in revenue from it, so it may still be worth it for them.
Oh yeah, and apparently there was some kind of leak in some meta data or something, suggesting that there will be another generation of Ipod. Search for it on youtube.

Just gonna say, the nano shown here is the updated one from 2015 and so is the iPod touch, not 2012 as he said! Also the shuffle is probably the updated one from 2015 too although the colour of grey has been the same in both 2010 model and 2015.

Same here I have never bought any iPod before since they were expensive so I had to stick with AndroidOS after getting a Shuffle for 20 bucks I finally see why this things actually work because BOTH BATTERY AND AUDIO kills my boring slow and unresponsive lame android. No more worrying about "Google Play Music Has Stopped Responding" or having the lame AndroidOS spazz out and restart when I hook up my Sennheisers
honestly, I wish they were still around (nano, shuffle) because the shuffle was a tiny music device that, believe or not, cost less than a Macbook case!!! I watched this video on my iPod 6. I'm 16 and I can't afford to pay for a monthly phone plan, so I just use my iPod, it is basically the same exact thing as a phone except You need wifi to call or message people (wifi is pretty much everywhere these days anyways).

I feel you miss the point of an mp3 player, for me. Which is to be able to play music in the absence of internet and change song from within my pocket. And last more than a couple of days without charging. And not have to buy an armband holder to do anything active while listening.
So I'd say the opposite. The big touchscreen ipod is useless for those with a smartphone, but the ipod nano has a much better (70h?) battery life and is nice and small and light, and the shuffle has physical buttons for on the go track changing and can clip on for when running.
I will never get a purely touchscreen music device as I'd be giving up the pocket based changing of tracks. And for what? Additional features my phone already has.
Unless I got headphones with a track changer on it, but again, my phone lasts a day or two. My mp3 player lasts a couple of weeks.
Iphones are fucking expensive as fuck.

I honestly hate streaming music. I understand the convenience of it, but I own so many cds. So why would I ever pay extra for a streaming service? I would rather just buy the new albums that come out and then transfer them from iTunes to my iPhone.

Everything I download I use it with other products, except movies bought on Apple. and BTW, your idea about the "new" iPod Classic sounds terrific... clowntrooper61 think it's something like 5 hours on one charge ... and you put the AirPods into the case and connect that to an outlet using a lightning cable .... hope that was useful 😂

I use iPods as a secondary phone for other things like music and a few games for the more storage that I can use.
Since people are gradually making less phone calls these days, I guess iPod Touch could be the future of smartphone
Eh, not too sure. My bosses usually text me or something since its more convenient and its nice to have a written record of a conversation. Now with iMessage or Google's Allo, most text messages aren't even sent through a carrier but over WiFi.

I just bought a Gold IPod Touch on Thursday for my 41st birthday. I still have a functional Classic iPod from 2006 that use every other day I travel to and from work.
