Love how you come across fella, no blowing smoke up certain arses, no brand mentioning every 2 minutes or shop mentioning, you know the reviewers , so we won't bother with them, you say it how it is and don't apologise for it, and all the best with the channel Giles. 👍

Always nice to see theory face reality - and theory having to be redefined or "refined" to fit with actual measurements.
That FX True Ballistics Chronograph is pretty expensive, but it certainly adds a whole lot of value to speed tests. Muzzle velocity says very little about Joules/ft-lbs at the target, but with this device you can have an exact answer. Very nice.

I love slugs at longer ranges, and I use slugs at shorter ranges. For close range pesting, I prefer wadcutters in all calibers I shoot. (I cast .25 wadcutters) They're cheap, plenty accurate, and hit like a brick. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't push them past 600 fps either. I have a rifles that will shoot them well even up to supersonic speeds.

It's good to see your videos again. I've also tried a similar comparison using JSB slugs and pellets - which in 22 cal can be had in identical in weights (25.39gn), my FX chrono shows the pellets going faster at the muzzle from the same tune, but as you've mentioned slugs retain their speed down range better due to higher BC. One important consideration for me was how accurate the slug was, and not all slugs liked my FAC FX STX barrel but the JSB's worked like a charm and were as accurate as the pellets.

I commend your dedication to getting those weights as close as you could purchase. I will point out that a quick force equation could have saved a lot of the mental gymnastics while still letting you try out that neat piece of chrono-kit. That's how we Americans argue over which bullet is the killiest, and it'll work with anything moving that you intend to strike something with, even crossbow bolts to handgun ammo. After all, it's not the speed the kills, it's the sudden deceleration.

When i first started shooting slugs about three years ago i tested lots of pellets vs slugs and was very surprised how the slugs bled off less velocity than the pellets, but i didnt have access to a fancy chronograph but it was still interesting to see that the hype about slugs was true.

And I belive the drag inside the barrel with slugs is what causes them to come out of the muzzle slower (similar speeds ot the pellet) but lose less speed down range

I've been carrying out these same experiments in .177 sub 12ft pounds. I've been testing lead ZAN 10g & 13g slugs, JSB Knock Out MK l and the new MK II with the flared skirt and the lead free ZAN 8.5g. I've been testing using a Snowpeak P35, BRK Ghost and BSA Defiant all with great results but so far only out to 30 yards (my back garden). I've also tried them in my TX200HC springer. The problem with them in the TX200HC is that they all seem to be a very tight fit but still accurate. What people need to understand is that all of these new type slugs are actually a hybrid so are nothing like the old solid ones most older shooters remember. I'm constantly being told, yes, but don't they get stuck in your barrel? I put quite a few hundred through all of these rifles now and have never had one get stuck. The ZAN lead free have actually been quiet a big surprise as they seem just as accurate as the lead ones. The only downside is of course their cost, but like everything once they become more popular and more manufactured, the price hopefully will come down. Extending to 50 yards will be next.

Well done always pleased to see your video's. I have similar results with BSA cold forged barrel H&N 10.3s. Slugs leave slow but with high BC retain a lot more energy down range. Plus I was pleased they came out barrel 😄.

well done, matching weights is basically matching sectional density to make it even, that really highlights the difference in the form factor of the ammo. it really gets down a rabbit whole once this conversation gets to what the highest BC that a rifle or caliber can achieve. well done sir.

    I love testing 👍
My guess is there’s a Goldilocks zone when it comes to sub 12 projectile weight concerning trajectory/momentum etc. and I guess current lead pellets fall within that zone.
It’s just a case of finding which one suits your particular barrel for grouping etc.
Generally speaking just test different quality domed pellets between medium and heavy weights and pick the best grouping one at 30 - 40 meters.

You will always get slower muzzle velocities from slugs vs pellets as slugs have a lot more friction in the barrel, however the pellets will slow down much faster than slugs and thus down range a slug is always going to retain it's velocity much better

Your results emphasize the speed down range. But what if we are emphasizing flatter trajectory and less wind influence, especially at the same pellet-tuned setting? I think the pellet might win that. Even if the slug is slightly faster down at the target, the pellet got there quicker because it was traveling faster for most of the way. So it also had a flatter trajectory. Why are the pellets faster when leaving the barrel? Is it because they have less friction in the barrel? Just some thoughts and questions for you. If I spend time tuning my rifle for my preferred ammo (pellet or slug), I might be inclined to not mess with that. But I might still like to shoot the opposite (slug or pellet) sometimes without changing tuning. What wins? And how far down range do they cross over. Pellets leave faster, so they win close in. Slugs have better BC, so they win farther out. Define win. Is it killing energy at impact? Or is it time of flight (for flatter trajectory and less wind influence; therefore, more accuracy)? Well, you should show us results for both types of “win”. It seems like an interesting video, especially per what you recommended for UK tuned guns. But also for me in US, where I care about shots per fill and do most my shooting at the range. Also, if I hunt, most will not be beyond 50yds because we have woods in California.

Would I be right in saying that, in sub-12, the slugs would have a flatter trajectory due to the better BC and retained speed, but a lower power and max range due to the reduced initial speed? Obviously, without an accuracy element it’s hard to conclude, but wouldn’t that potentially position sub-12 slugs for something like HFT?

Tho the pellet skits make a better gas seal ? so the slugs have more surface contacting the barrel and therefore more friction ? what else could play role in this ?
