I went the slug route to try it out and it took the joy of shooting and turned it to frustration to get the exact tune and harmonic, even with the 600mm barrel. Went back to the simple life with 500mm and H&N Barracuda Match 22.14 grain, 5.52. It is a full mildot difference (higher poi) at 100yds than with the JSB 18.13’s, and a mildot lower than the NSA 23 grain 217 @940’ish FPS, both zeroed at 35 yds which is the top of my trajectory. So I split the difference and went with the H&N’s shooting FX Maverick 500mm @ 900fps, very stable flight. The shot count difference and consistency is worth it and I rarely shoot out to 100 yds and beyond. It all depends on the application of the individual’s shooting needs. For me it’s pellets and there is no shame in shooting pellets. The main thing that we all agree on is a humane dispatch of your quarry.
I have a 22 avenger for pellets but i wanted a slug gun so i bought a wildcat Mk3 BT sniper in 22 cal from Utah airguns last week, shooting javelin 23 gr. At 980 fps love it thanks Utah airguns 👍😁
People always drag .177 in the airgun community. There was a case (cant remember the state) where a white tail deer was found dead with a double lung puncture and a copper .177 pellet was found inside. I thought this was completely bogus until i moved and bought some farm land. At the time I didn't have a real rifle so it was either a 9mm Glock that I had very few ammunitions for or my .177 airgun (900fps) that was dialed in to 100yrds with 500 pellets for $6. I had a coyote problem and they were killing my chickens so I set up one night and smacked one with the ol airgun. I did eventually get a 17WSM but the fact a .177 killed a 35lbs coyote is still impressive. I don't recommend or advise you hunt anything larger than a rabbit or small game with .177 but it WILL kill medium sized game with the right shot placement.
When hunting medium or medium-large game with .177 its all about pellet choice, you need hard but heavy pellets, so for example h&n baracuda power is a lead pellet (for weight) but its also copper coated (for hardness), this will result in deep penetration and then it is very deadly. But its also about what kind of gun you are using, so for example if you are using a powerfull .177 airgun you should grab heavier pellets, but if you have a weak .177 airgun you should grab lighter pellets; for example the h&n coppa spitzkugel pellets, those are also lead inside and copper on the outside. Now if you have a very very powerful .177 you can even grab some h&n rabbit magnum power slugs, those are ALSO lead inside and copper outside.
The only thing I can add to this video is as follows : We all like to experiment. The choices of pellets and slugs are many ! A lot of us have many different types of pellet guns . Thank you Justin. Spot on recommendations for initial pellet vs slug considerations or trials in PCP rifles. I have found at up to 50 yds with both my Marauder and Maverick VP 22 cal, up to 50 yds no real benefit to slugs. Slugs just cost more and make me stop for more air fills. But at 100 yds and beyond the slugs act more like a 22 lr and are much more accurate slaughtering the accuracy of my most accurate and heaviest 22 pellets.
Exactly ... I have an Avenger budget in 177 and it can shoot KO slugs really well. But, to be able to shoot slug with enough accuracy at 80m or more then I have to bump-up the regulator to 2200 psi and adjust the hammer accordingly. While for shooting pellet, I can put the regulator as low as 1600 psi and get tons of shots in one fill (4350 psi). And you can feel the Avenger is happier coz it doesn't have to work hard to push pellets. Good video .. 👍
I’ve watched The Leshiy 2 airgun guy shoot 44 grain slugs at 680 ish FPS 32 yards out of a 350mm barrel almost single hole groups. So speed is not always a factory with slugs. But great video.
This is exactly the direction I am taking with a .22 FX Compact with pellets for inside 50 yards and .30 FX Sniper with slugs for 100+. I don't see any other efficient way to make one gun do both at the same time.
Love my 700mm Impact M3 .25 cal for slugs, tunes by y’all’s 😎. We were just putting headshots on a pigeon silhouette at 125 yards with it. For a budget slug gun, the Umarex Origin .25 works extremely well. Probably not taking long shots, but for 100 yds or less it’s excellent.
I did buy the Avenger and tried to ramp it up for slugs. Fastet I could get is about light 850 fps with slugs and everything maxed out on the gun. Can you shoot slugs at that speed? Sure, but that's not why I want to shoot slugs. It's a pellet shooter only (if I can ever get it to group, terrible groups right now). My next gun will probably be a proper slug gun that can zing the heavier pellets at least 1000 fps, maybe faster. That'll take something like the newer Impacts with a Power Block and larger air plenum. For now, pellets are great, so sticking with what works.
I had to buy an Avenger as well. I had heard so many great things about it. Mine is in 177cal. With the reg on 2,800 psi and the hammer max. I shoot Nielsen 12.5 slugs at 1,005 fps. When I set the HST at + 2.5 turns from lowest. I get 880fps and accuracy on par with the best pellets. I can keep most touching at 25 yards. That's the most distance I have tried thus far. I hunt in woods so I haven't tried long distance. I normally use 10.5gr crossman ultra mags. They are accurate and cheap. I would try the 177cal if you wish to push slugs real fast. I believe Shooter 1721 did a great shot at 100yards with a 10gr JSB slug going over 1000fps with the Avenger.
@@heithwatkins I think my foray into cheap guns is over. Accuracy wise, mine sucks. It needs a new barrel and they won't sell me one without sending it in, doing a service call and charging for a barrel and service, and shipping. Not worth it. For slugs, I'll stick with higher end guns. Not worth the headaches. Glad yours worked out though. You just never know with the less expensive guns.
I really love my Senica Eagle Claw in .25. I get plenty of penitration threw a 2"x4" with pellets like 43 gr Senica . No mushrooming but slugs don't give me much penitration because they do mushroom. I haven't hunted any game yet because my dog dropped my rifle upside down on the (cheap) scope so now I'm heart broken until I get a good one for both plinking and hunting.
I am using ZAN 16 grain slugs for my Lothar Walther Poly barrel ... And it works very good ... 5x times shot and it can make 2,5 cm groups at 101 meters
I have the AEA precision HP ss max .50 cal. Its a beautiful looking little hand cannon. So much power you really have to be safe and aware when firing it. I just feel like it's a matter of time before ATF or whoever starts trying to regulate these guns. Especially if there is money to be made. They already have there justification with all these shootings in doing it. I advise getting yours now before all that mess.
I had a sheap airrifle that a friend fixed for me. He used to build airrifles, he bored out the barrel and machined parts to it and put a HEAVY spring in it. That thing could have taken down most animals with slugs.
Awesome explanation intuitivelyvthats what I thought but few questions to slugs produce the same amount of energy as pellets from the barrel..also I’m sure you’ve heard of aea guns which seem to be the leading in the power / budget arena …I had one gun that I shot slugs thru but then a few solutes got jammed in the barrel I believe because the power wasn’t there to push it all the way thru due to the amount of air left in the cylinder… so I learned to only shoot slugs out of an unregulated pcp at higher velocities that said gun can produce ..no more issues jamming
I wish one of you guys would show why a HPA is a better choice than a .22RF. A new video not an old one. #1 why are they so expensive,? #2 How often do you have to maintenance the rifles? #3 What is the first initial cost? #4 At what distance do you start loosing accuracy? Do a comparison of your new product showing the difference between Firearm .22RF lr and a HPA rifle. The point is to sell to new customers and bring them in to this hobby from Rimfire/center fire not only selling to older /previous customers . That would be great! Thank you
I'll give you some more info. In order to overcome rifling friction (slugs are 16% greater than a pellet at nominal velocity) the slug needs to be fired at closer to an energy of 50ftlbs where the friction drops down to within 1-2% of the pellet.
Hi Justin, Please correct me if I am wrong. This is a summation. I own the KERVAN Airboss K-1, 25 caliber. Barrel length is 58 cm. Muzzle velocity. Max. 1100 FPS. 335m/s. I’m using the JSB exact King Heavy Diablo and JSB slug knockout. - If i am target shooting/marksmanship from 50 to 100 yards then standard pellets should be fine? - If I am going for long range target shooting/marksmanship, then I should be using slugs? For example, anything over a 100 yard distance you are going to get less of a trajectory curve fall off, thus in turn more accuracy at long distances? - If you’re hunting small game at say 50 yards to 75 yards you should use pellets? - If you are hunting larger game at say 50 to 100 yards, then use slugs because the impact of the slug will be greater than a pellet with more expansion?
Indicates that slugs take more air than pellets, but the amount of air is controlled by the gun design, whether it has a modifiable regulator, the amount of air released is the same whether you launch a pellet or slug. Using the same weight and air, pellet will have slightly (barely) higher muzzle velocity and lower impact velocity as well as range (and FPE) due to less barrel friction but more air friction (drag). The reduced range and FPE on target mean, to my thinking, pellets are for target plinking only. To conserve air but still hunt, set the gun for lower power and launch a lighter slug that can still get the job done at the range intended.
Great video. Slugs are new thing to me, and I plan on upgrading to an FX Impact, or like. Will the Impact, for example, shoot both pellets and slugs from the same barrel, or do I need to buy two different? I understand the slugs work best on a certain twist, so I am simply unsure.
@@UtahAirguns it's a home made airgun looking very similar to a FX Impact. It has a Walther barrel pushing 16 grain Pellets at 820 fps. 90 meters is max because Pellets start dropping quite fast after 60 to 70 meters.
I was shooting pellets out of my .25 m3 for a good while till I started prairie dog hunting. It got the job done but had two issue. Energy was one. I'd walk up on some suffering critters and I didn't really dig that. And two.. wind and range. Pellets really don't like wind and are not great after 100y. I moved to slugs and those issues were resolved instantly.
Have no inclination to go PCP. Sticking w/old Sheridan SilverStreak. Would upgrade the sights (my vision getting poor . . . Hi-res dots?). Just prefer pumping to what I need out to 50yds. If small game, full pressure. Just plinking, 4 pumps and 20-25 yds dead on. It's old like me.
I too am an old guy and have a Sheridan SS in .20 cal. Mac1 Air guns did the steroid tune on it for me. Same pumping action and resistance but 5-6 pumps now is equal to the old 8 pumps. 8 pumps yields 13.4 ft lbs and 664 fps now with a JSB 13.73 gr dome pellet. 6 pumps yields 604fps and 11.1 ft lbs. 3 pumps yields 465 fps and 6.6 ft lbs. Gun is good for 75,000 shots Mac1 claims. Mac1 can add a scope mount to the Sheridan.
I shoot PCP now but grew up with my Sheridan blue streak. Such great memories with it. I love them so much, I have a collection of 10 now. They are an American icon in my opinion. Had the steroid kit put on 2 of them. Why, I don’t know, because I rarely, if ever shoot any of them.
Hi guys am shoting a 30 cal FX MAVERICK SNIPER JSB knockouts SLUGS 50.15 grains at 960fps 102fpe love it!! Also shoting 25 cal FX MAVERICK SNIPER shoting 36.2 grains NSA SLUGS at 1000fps 80fpe love them!! They dont shot 1 inch groups to 100 yards but i dont mis ground squirrels from 30 yards to 300 yards!! FX MAVERICKS CAN push heavy lead!!
I have question, but first the situation: I shot mainly at distances from 40 metres up to 75 meter with pellets. The hades 15.89 gr with the AGT Vixen long .22 unregulated. Now the question: is this suitable for slugs and if so what weight would be best if I want shoot between 80 and 110 meters? Hope you folks have an answer. Thanks BTW, great advice about the awareness when shooting. Keep it safe
I use 6oo ml barrel ,950 fps using 18.13 grn pellets, head shots deadly 60/70/80 yds no problem, bestnto date was 129 yds on calm night, i have 22/23 grn slugs but not had the need to use them yet,
Hello, I have a question. I am shooting FX Wildcat MK3 .25 with upgraded power plenum. I am shooting Jsb knockout slugs 33.49 with 0.092BC and Jsb king heavy MK1 pellets 33.95 with 0.056BC. They have more or less same velocity at the end of the barrel around 925-935 FPS. Now my question is why slugs have around 20cm(8inch) more drop at 90m(98yards)?
I've always been curious to why the grizzly pellet doesn't have the same bc as a slug? and why it wasn't manufactured in .22 and .177? and why the slug didn't evolve from that specific pellet? it's shaped like a slug! In my opinion that's the first slug!
Years ago we used to have sabot rounds , a lead slug in a plastic carrier which worked well but cost a lot compared to pellets so it fell out of use , pity.
The consensus now is that slugs are more accurate past 75 yards especially if there’s a breeze and the slugs, hold more energy when hitting a target. Many of the FX gun pros are exclusively, shooting slugs now. I can’t seem to find any kind of test showing exactly how much energy a slug will produce compared to a pellet at 50 yards or 75 yards. Is it 25% more energy is it 50% more energy?
We got piglets around our home. They come right under the balcony. Suppose I want to catch a piglet with an AirVenturi Avenger .25 at 20m (60ft) maxinum. Slug or hunting pellet? Does it make a difference?
Where can I go to get information regarding FX barrels? I have an FX Impact in .25 with the 700mm superior barrel. I now want to try to equal or actually better my new old stock CZ452 that is just not cutting it so far (need to get a larger selection of ammo) As FX use a strange rifling system how do I know what slug weights will shoot well from the superior barrel and what weight point would I need to purchase the superior heavy? I have a fair idea but I believe you guys are the experts and can't find the info from FX. Thanks so much in advance. Hi from the UK...
Hi guys! Can I ask you a question? I have an Avenger, and from what I researched, its barrel is 1/18. As I usually use slugs, the ballistic coefficient is something I test in practice. I recently tested 2 slugs, same brand, same shape, just different weights! At 20.5 grains I got a BC of 0.07, and at 25.3 grains only 0.057 of BC. I'm using both at 295 ms (967 fps)! My question is, would it be the barrel twisted fault? Perhaps the slug of this weight is too long and does not stabilize?
I have a gamo varmint 177 only air rifle I ever owned and it can take down a coyote no problem at 10 yards it all depends on the pellet heavier the pellet the better for hunting such as a 10 or 13 grain works for me
I was given 3 tins of FX pellets from my neighbor when I told him about my new FX Panthera 700 that I got for slugs. Would it be an issue to fire the pellets out of yhe slug liner, or should I save them for another gun?
One thing I think might be an advantage for pellets is that if you are hunting things in trees like squirrels or birds, they may be less dangerous if you miss.
The person that I purchased my airgun from told me that JSB exact pellets work the best for my Gun. The problem is they have so many different kind of exact models. How can you figure out which one is for what?
Hey Justin, Thanks for a great video. This is very timely for me. I have a n opportunity to buy an old used .177 Gamo Hunter Extreme supposedly it shoots Gamo pba alloy pellets close to 1521 fps according to Rick Eutsler 's video review. What grain weight pellet or slug would be optimal for this gun and where can I buy a die for casting heavier .177 slugs? Thanks. Stay Safe. Be Well. GOD BLESS.
Hey, been watching the RMAC stuff a while and got motivated to get an entry level PCP. The wife thought it was a passing fancy...ha. Needless to say I got an Air Venturi Avenger Bullpup...aka Bullvenger. I'm shooting 14ish gr out of a .22 and having great luck out to 85yds. With Crosman Premier Hollow Points. At 50 I can take out the top of a thumb tack and then come back for the bottom. Honestly it's not one shot after another but ive done it several times. Just got some nsa slugs and I'm ready to see what they got. Reg is low for the cheap light pellets so I gotta retune. Been out of the circle a while...did u beat ...umm what was it 680yds on a gong?
I ordered an air venturi .22... i want to shoot slugs at 50 yards. Any tips/pointers to make that happen would be great. Im open to major mods if needed.
I used slugs out of my whisper rifle and my pz-09 for about a year or so and all you need for a slug a right barrel and about 480-1300 fps to shoot long range you need at least 650 fps works for about 40 yards and with my pistol I was able to take out 2 raccoons and they were fat so I would say go to a specialist about your airgun
I find it weird that everyone thinks "slugs" have to go fast to be stable..32 s&w shorts shoot around 600 fps and are pretty accurate and the bullet is stable..I think some airguns that don't shoot slugs well aren't barreled for slugs: twist rate is wrong, slugs don't fit snug or too snugly. Etc..
I honestly don't know why 177 pellets aren't being phased out more....unless using a very low power gun, they are just too light, too small, too weak, and too easily moved around by wind or any other factor. Im someone who owns over 20 air guns, shoot almost every day....every time I try to move into 177 again I'm always struck by how weak and anemic they are. 22 is the smallest round anyone should be using if you want any kind of energy or mass to your projectiles at all. 10-12gr projectiles in 177 just don't cut it.
.177 is used in 10 meter air pistol and popular with target shooters because of the flatter trajectory. Me I live in the U.K. where .177 very popular because of the draconian gun laws air rifles are restricted to 12 foot pounds above that you need a firearms certificate which is a ball ache to get. I agree with you on the.177 I prefer .22 and that’s what all my rifles have beer in.
@@LouSassle idk if you read my comment closely but im really referring to light weight .177 PELLET. ranging in the typical range of 7-11gr. You are effectively running a 21gr heavy 177 slug and interjecting that into my argument about typical 177 pellet. 21gr is nowhere near a 'typical' or 'average' pellet weight in 177, in fact its double or triple average 177 pellet weight. You are shooting a projectile weight that I would consider fairly heavy in .22, and lightweight in .25 cal. throw some Crosman Premier HP 7.9s in that gun and we will have to watch you drop a critter at "100+ yards all the time"

I haven't hunted any game yet because my dog dropped my rifle upside down on the (cheap) scope so now I'm heart broken until I get a good one for both plinking and hunting.
Short and efficient information to me, thank you very much for your point of choose pellet or slugs. Happy new year from Switzerland, Rene
i like the amount of videos you guys are coming out with. can we get some more hunting videos?
More hunting videos coming your way!
Always spectacular videos always wishing much more success like guaranteed always fan from Brazil
No they don’t have justification and it’s not a firearm.
Excellent advice 👍🎯
I'm very happy to see you brother ❤️
Very nice information
I hate watching these videos....... i bought an air rifle because of you guys lol. Keep making killer videos.
Too many people have crazy ideas that pellet rifles should do more than they were designed for.
Awesome Video. Just got my m3 700mm .22. About ready for m3 .35 cal hopefully this summer.
U re the man!
Nice one!
Keep us uptade!
Many thanks!
These guys are the pros!!!!!!
can you shoot slugs out of an break Barral riffle
Very very informative video and well done. Thank you for the valuable information.
Good info.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Im new to air guns...
Gamo magnum Gr 25cal
Am i good to shoot a 40+ gr slug ?
Great video. Slugs are new thing to me, and I plan on upgrading to an FX Impact, or like. Will the Impact, for example, shoot both pellets and slugs from the same barrel, or do I need to buy two different? I understand the slugs work best on a certain twist, so I am simply unsure.
Pellets to 90 meters is a lot of fun and a good challenge but I'd love to try the slugs one day.
Not sure if my gun would push them though.
Which model do you have?
@@UtahAirguns it's a home made airgun looking very similar to a FX Impact. It has a Walther barrel pushing 16 grain Pellets at 820 fps. 90 meters is max because Pellets start dropping quite fast after 60 to 70 meters.
Agreed.
Thank you very much, very helpful information.
Would a .177 slug work in the Daisy Powerline 880?
I have the air avenger in .25 straight out the box I shot dime size groups at 72 yards with .31 gr H&N slugs
Thanks
BTW, great advice about the awareness when shooting. Keep it safe
I use 6oo ml barrel ,950 fps using 18.13 grn pellets, head shots deadly 60/70/80 yds no problem, bestnto date was 129 yds on calm night, i have 22/23 grn slugs but not had the need to use them yet,
I set up my AEA Challenger Pro with NSA .218 slugs with fantastic results in the 60-100 yd range. The .219 slugs don't work as well.
Great review. Helped me out a lot.
Great vid & good explanation! 👍
Very good Explanation
Will slugs be effective in the new gamo magnum pro? Doing mostly hunting.
Bought my aea from you guys with somw fx slugs with it in .25
For hunting which is better .specially for ducks ?
How does a choked or unchoked barrel affect using slugs?
Is the unchoked preferred for slugs?
Owning a Hatsan Bullmaster .25 I don't find it very good with slugs but it works great with pellets. How do I know which rifle works well with slugs?
Pellets for me
Thanks for doing that Justin.
Hey sir's good day just asking a question plan to buy fx king 500 .22
Can it shoots slugs???
What’s a good 22
Rifle that shoots slugs
In pissed
I keep buying rifles that say they can shoot slugs but every time 25 or under I get jammed!
One thing I think might be an advantage for pellets is that if you are hunting things in trees like squirrels or birds, they may be less dangerous if you miss.
Definitely a good point!
what barrel u recomend to shot pellet and slug?..
The person that I purchased my airgun from told me that JSB exact pellets work the best for my Gun. The problem is they have so many different kind of exact models. How can you figure out which one is for what?
Hey Justin,
Thanks for a great video.
Thanks.
Stay Safe. Be Well. GOD BLESS.
I purchased a 25 cal challenger pro because of the power output it has a reg & power wheel easy peesy. What b/c should I use for slugs?
4:40 will a hatsan flash be able to handle slugs? Specifically the H&N Grizzly
Hi :-) How to I find out if a PCP rifle is good for Slugs? what type a barrel should be and how much power measured how? Thank you.
If a pellet pistol can shoot a pellet of a certain weight, can it also shoot a slug of similar or less weight?
Could you use slugs in a 177 FX cyclone?
Do any work for green gas gun 6mm pellets.
Can the Avenge X shoot lighter slugs well?
I love slugs more , they can still pack a punch from a longer distance…
It did. Subbed!
What is the hardest pellet
Well explained sir
Pellets all day long.
After getting .22 i really haven't tucked the .177
Great video..
What about pcp's with rifled barrels? My understanding is that's a no-go am I right or wrong about that? Anyone? Thanks.
why are all airgun slugs hollow point, why no eld style offerings?
I assume the slug has more bearing surface to be more accurate with rifling, but I haven't watched the whole video yet.
Don't be scared to polish your barrel, leads to tighter groups in ALL airguns.
Oliver Anthony
I find it weird that everyone thinks "slugs" have to go fast to be stable..32 s&w shorts shoot around 600 fps and are pretty accurate and the bullet is stable..I think some airguns that don't shoot slugs well aren't barreled for slugs: twist rate is wrong, slugs don't fit snug or too snugly. Etc..
Nice info. Thanks
I shoot 21 grain piledrivers with 1800psi out of my $180 Hammerli 177 and drop critters at 100+ yards all the time. Maybe you are doing it wrong?
@@LouSassle idk if you read my comment closely but im really referring to light weight .177 PELLET. ranging in the typical range of 7-11gr. You are effectively running a 21gr heavy 177 slug and interjecting that into my argument about typical 177 pellet. 21gr is nowhere near a 'typical' or 'average' pellet weight in 177, in fact its double or triple average 177 pellet weight. You are shooting a projectile weight that I would consider fairly heavy in .22, and lightweight in .25 cal. throw some Crosman Premier HP 7.9s in that gun and we will have to watch you drop a critter at "100+ yards all the time"
Thanks so much
