Yes I would agree with the air rifle being niche group. One of my favorite UA-camrs Made amazing stop motion animated shorts that he did all of the sculpting and animating by himself and did crafting and sculpting Tutorials, was beloved by some of the biggest UA-camrs and just announced he was shutting down his channel After 4 years. He didn't say it because he's got More class than you blame others for his issues but Through four years of awesome videos he never broke the 30,000 subscriber mark! Granted he only had eighty-eight videos but they were all full productions that must have taken months. It's a damn shame.

Thank you Mrs AAR for showing the gel pack, and for Mr AAR thanks again in showing these results, my grandson aged 24 finally got it!! now l know grandad, he said to Mr Grumpy. Have watched this video a couple of times and it has helped a lot. Grandsons new air rifle will be FAC, if he gets the ticket, its not for the killing power, not much at all to 12ld , its the range that is required, he lives in the wilderness, no trees, Isle of Lewis, crows seem to know of the distance, 50 yards plus, rabbits are the same, but not the rats!! Kill the game cleanly, no suffering . There's not a lot of cover to be had, the old gilly suit comes in handy, when lying down.

This was a excellent video, instructive on the home made gel part (I love it) and a honest evaluation of the pellets. I love the end part however! on Real Hollywood guns and testosterone vs Air Guns:) which leads me too, I have been shooting all my life real (Gun powered rifles and pistols) and Air rifles. In case someone doubts, I am a 21+ year retired veteran Navy, Naval reserve and 17+ Active in the army, culminating in (7 Combat tours) and hundreds of hours on many different types of shooting and firing ranges. everything from .177 air gun up to a 50mm artillery cannon (My favorite by far the old Browning .50 caliber machine gun) OK to the point! I need to say again any projectile travailing over 500 to 600 feet per second in .177 caliber or greater can kill. even lower velocities will kill. Without exception any thing in the .22 Caliber size traveling at 900 feet per second or greater you do not want to be in front of without at least a 1/4 inch hardened plate steel sheet and a 2 foot thick hay bale wrapped in 15 layers of fabric behind that, to hide behind, the sheet of steel to stop or deform the bullet and the hay bail and fabric to disperse and redirect the energy or the projectile. Even than make sure your will is in order. (NOTE I do not recommend anyone trying this with a live target behind it, and anyone or one's who do, does it at their or trier's risk of life and limb). I have been witness to a person shot at 25 feet away with a standard .22 caliber round travailing at 1100 Feet per second, the led projectile bounced 6 times through their body starting at their left thigh and exiting their left shoulder after bouncing off the clavicle, it severed their spinal cord paralyzing them from the neck down and destroyed both their kiddies, which in turn they have to have weekly dialogues treatments. this was an accident were his brother fail down the stairs with a loaded .22 cal hunting rifle (Rug___ 10/22) it went off at 25 feet away. Please don't ever think even a Air Gun is a Toy (They Demand Caution, Safety and Respect, (Never load a weapon or place your finger on the trigger unless you intend to shoot something) Andy thank you for the great video

when i shoot my 40 joule (around 30 ftp) airgun at 40 meters with hard copper ammo at a 3mm stainless steel (slightliy harder than common s235 steel, pretty much everything is made of) plat, it leaves a 1 mm deep mark and bends the plate over time. A couple of mm are enough to stop it. a human skull might not. I even treat softairs like real guns, because even that is enough energy to destroy an eye.

Proof that with a 12ft/lb .22 rifle, accuracy is paramount.
Sure... Whack up the power, and projectile deformation becomes a factor.

Great video, thank you. For 1377 owners, my best hunting pellet is jsb exact express with rws superdome a very close second at less than 1/2 the price. The rws is heaver, but flies the same as jsb. A dime group at 20 yards is the best my gun gets, and 25 yards is a rewarding shot for this little gun. Stock and 3-9x 40mm AO Tasco scope added makes for a fun cheap gun.

I just bought a .22 air rifle a week or 2 ago. I thought it was me or the rifle becausey shots where sometimes 5cm/2inches in distance from each other at only 12,5m or 13,7 yards (not a lot of space at home). Then I bought the H&N baracuda match and my shots where instantly more accurate and consistent groups within 1cm of each other at the same distance. I'm so happy to have dound your channel so I wouldn't give up on the rifle or myself. Pellet type and brand really do matter immensly!

A great video. Hollow point bullet expansion is velocity dependant and it is clear that the same applies to airgun pellets. So for sub 12 guns you are right: a normal dome head in the right place is enough.

Great review it was nice to see Mrs AAR too. I was quite shocked at how poor some of the pellets performed at sub 12lbs. I've just got a new permission and was looking for some hunter pellets for rat control but going on this, I think I'll just stick to the new pellets I use and was surprised how well they shot. I gave them a go just because they were pretty cheap, not the done thing normally using cheaper pellets. These were H&N EXCITE HAMMER 22 cal. With these in my Weihrauch HW95K springer rifle (we all know how the gun choses the pellet) they performed really well on paper at around 35 metres. Giving just over 5 pence piece grouping. I ordered 10 tins as soon as I shot the first tester tin full. Maybe it would be informative to pick an aray of cheaper to cheapest pellets around and test those. Maybe some shoot better than the more expensive ones or will give the newer people to shooting a good lesson in why not to buy cheap pellets. keep these reviews coming they're really great and help quite a few people myself included when choosing rifles and different products. Thank you.

Thanks for the ballistic gel tip.
Over the years I've shot a number of calibers (mostly hunting loads) at a wide variety of materials and it has been infomative.
Just two examples; a .22 hornet round will go clean through a 3/16" (nearly 5mm) plow blade at 50m.
A 200gn soft point .358 cal bullet travelling at 2700fps will pass straight through 12" of white gum (eucalyptus, "hard as the hobs of hell") tree at 100m.
A .375 300gn Nosler Partition at the same velocity will thread a 15" gum tree (and punish the shooter).

    • @johnballantyne6853
      @johnballantyne6853 4 роки тому

Definitely. I tested 24 different pellets for groups, from 20-50 yds, before settling on the AA 16gn as most accurate, second best were Bisley Magnum 21.14gn !! but once the Hades came on the scene I found they shot as good as either of the other two but had better knockdown. Some pellets, H&N Hunter and extreme & RWS just wouldn't group inside a coffee Mug at 40 yds.

    • @johnballantyne6853
      @johnballantyne6853 4 роки тому

ALAN BRAY For accuracy in my rifle they were Alan, but there was nothing to chose between the 16gn and the heavier Bisleys, basically pellet on pellet. I guess you’ll need to try some different ones to find out. They’ll all kill at normal ranges, but you’ve got to hit them in the right place👍🏼

    Out to 35 yards..
Ive had great success using .177 RWS Hobby flat heads. Ive also used JSB Exacts or one of the many clones and Accupels.
For the most part... Everything works to kill rabbits, mice and rats.
Shot placement is key and accuracy. So use a pellet that is accurate out of your rifle.

As someone just about to get into airguns, the big take away for me is how much effect the brand/type of pellet has on accuracy. Which I would never have thought would be an issue. I suspect knowing that will prevent me buying cheap pellets and then getting frustrated with my inability to produce repeatable shots. Thank you!

Iv always found that gamo air rifles are the best. They hit hard and I didnt have to keep sighting it in. My first one was a gamo big cat .177 cal from wal mart and I paid $150.

    • @kurt5079
      @kurt5079 2 роки тому +2

@@ford9339 Gamo do make some reasonably decent budget, entry level rifles that can do the job (like the big cat). I am not knocking them as they have a place.
However they can not by any means be recommended as the best. The more premium rifles do out class them in every regard although you are going to pay significantly more.
A weihrauch HW95 for example is going to provide much better build quality, accuracy and trigger. But if prices are similar in the US the conversation rate puts them at about 585 dollars or £450.
If you are on a tight budget the gamo will give a lot of bang for your buck and is very usable. Although you may want to replace the scope when you can for distances over 15-20 meters. If you have a bit more to spend though you will really see the difference with some of the premium rifles.
Just a few thoughts for any new shooters who may see this. No offence intended. All the best.

    25 meters.
    Sniper Magnum. 10 (insanly accurate).
    Hornet. 9
    Baracuda Hunter Extreme. 7
    Silver Point. 6
    Baracuda Hunter. 7
    Baracuda Match. 10
    Hades. 6

    Sniper Magnum. 6
    Hornet. 8
    Baracuda Hunter Extreme. 6
    Silver Point. 6
    Baracuda Hunter. 5
    Baracuda Match. 9
    Hades. 5
    JSB Exact Diabolo. 9+
The JSB Diabolo Exact has no difference at all from 25 to 45 meters accuracy, they shoot exactly the same keeping constant tight group even with some air blowing. Considering also the price because i wanted to buy many thousands of pellets i found JSB Exact Diabolo were the best for me. Also i tried some Superdomes which were just a joke. I loved Sniper Magnums at 25 meters but they disapoint me at 45. I wanted a pellet that would hit a nice group to all distancies from 25 to 45-50 meters. Next test will be from 50 to 100 meters i hope anytime soon.

Also in the movies the baddies can't hit the heroe with machine guns but the heroe picks off all the baddies with a pistol! Brilliant.

Bloody good video! I hope that some of the other channels take notes on what and how and why you did your vid this way.
Very well laid out and informative in a simplified very understandable fashion.
Thanks to Mrs Andy for the recipe! It kind of took me back to school and Mrs Beeton's cooking book lessons.... omg I'm getting ancient!

Still using my air arms diablos from 15 years ago ( creating a family got in the way of shooting) now my sons are getting old enough to introduce to shooting, my old pcp's and springers are back out, as well as me considering that maybe they need a gun to suit themselves (a full length falcon sporter single shot is the one they can use easiest, but there are other, better options for backyard plinking) I was worried that my local dealer didn't list the air arms pellets that I spent thousands of pellets narrowing down to being the best for my rifles, glad to see the jsb's will be a suitable replacement when I turn out to grab more pellets. For me, consistent accuracy was always the most important thing for hunting, if you can put that pellet where it's intended, it's going to do the job. 15 years ago, .177 was a bit controversial from the old guard for hunting, but a .177 pcp just below 12ftlb's is just easier to be accurate with at any distance out to 45 yards, at least in my experience and with the airguns I used.

    Hi Andy
I've just found this video, what an eye opener bud especially the car door and the stud wall material, i was genuinely surprised, probably more so by the sub-12fp, i didn't think it would penetrated past the first sheet,
Thanks for this shock inspiring ending to the video, it will encourage me to be a little more scientific or as my wife would put it, become a somewhat distructive adolescent child.
Much fun to be had in the new year
Take care bud, stay safe and keep it lit.👍 my friend.

Hi Folks......first off, brilliant video! Pretty much all the information that I was looking for about best possible pellets for hunting. I'm going to go with Andy here and say that I think that the JSB Hades pellet are fantastic! Accuracy and enough deformation to really deliver powerful energy transfer to your quarry. Was using the JSB Diablos and found a lot of shots going straight through your quarry, making it more of a less humane kill allowing your quarry to scurry, or fly away at least for a while before the the damage kicks in. (Makes some animals a bitch to find!) Anyway that's my ten cents worth!.......Keep up the good work, hope you and the Mrs are staying safe, loving your work!

Great new video, really enjoyed it! Do thank the Misses for the comprehensive tutorial on how to make the cheap ballistic gel. Will try to do some tests with a 28 ftp breakbarrel this spring, but I do expect my Hades pellets to expand very little if at all.... No great loss though, hunting with air rifles in Holland is an absolute no-no anyway. Looking forward to your .177 test. Thanks!!
