Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader are literally the same person, after getting burned by lava on Mustafar, he forgot his own name and who he was, because that caused his some amnesia of what he did to his Pregnant Wife "Padmé" before she gave birth to Luke and Leia in Revenge of the Sith
Ahsoka cut part of the mask and saw Anakin, her master beneath. Obi Wan cut the mask and underneath it her saw the withering face of his friend, his brother, and apprentice underneath. Luke took the mask off carefully and saw his father. Ahsoka and Obi Wan looked at him with pity for how far he'd fell. This pale and empty man, burned hollow by years of hate and anger. His body more metal than flesh. Luke looked at him with love. His father who was betrayed and made the wrong choice out of anger. A man who could be saved if he saw someone trusting him and refusing to give up on him. Everyone expected Luke to destroy Darth Vader. Because of Luke, Anakin destroyed Vader.
That is the side effects of Anakin drawing upon the dark side a lot for years. It aged him prematurely and horribly disfigured him and changed his eyes yellow and red. He was angry, bitter, hate and rage filled all the time and they were feeding the dark side. His eyes changed back when he let go of the anger, hate and rage and stopped using the dark side.
The bit I liked here is that Obi-Wan and Ahsoka (Jedi raised by the old Order) saw the face underneath, but still thought of him as Vader in the end. They'd moved on from Anakin. Luke meanwhile, only ever thought of him as Anakin after finding out the truth. He formed an attachment, and that attachment was what saved the day in the end. And it's arguably a nice reflection on Yoda that while he did train Luke in the Force, he chose to omit certain elements that he likely realized had been wrong.
Anakin was always pure hearted and good right since he was a child in The Phantom Menace that's y Qui Gon chose him as his apprentice. But after his innocent mom died in Attack of the clones, he was very troubled and disturbed and started questioning which side he should be on already. And in Revenge of the Sith, the twisted evil sith lord Chancellor Palpatine took full advantage of that, as Anakin started getting troubled visions of losing his beloved Padme just like how he lost his mom. And that's literally how the conniving Palpatine saved his own life by manipulating Anakin into believing that he can save the ones Anakin loves so much and avoided straight death by Mace Vindu's light saber and Palpatine was able to defeat and presumably kill vindu too. It was after that that Anakin willingly chose the dark path with Palpatine. So Anakin was not evil but was actually a victim of circumstances and manipulations and connivance by the evil forces. Luke made Anakin his dad realise the error of his ways which suddenly made the so-called Darth Vader do the thing he was supposed to have done thruout his life that is to fight the sith not to join them.
A Son so loving, that even after everything his father did, he couldn't allow him to die. He stood by his father and loved him to the very end. I have issues with my Dad but everytime I get angry with him I watch this scene and remember that underneath all the anger and everything else, there's love.

Then the camera pans upward to the sky, showing fireworks and celebrations. The juxtaposition of the scenes, from melancholy to celebrations, was masterfully done.
I believe Vader turned much sooner then generally is suspect even. He turned during his and Luke's fight at the cloud city. Watching his son jump to his death rather join him was a watershed moment in his life. Up to that moment all his loved ones were taken from him by others. Here was one who jumped to death rather join him. It rocked him to his core I believe from that moment on Vader began to lose his grip over Anakin. Anakin began to awaken and assert himself more and more. By the time Jedi rolls around Vader is almost gone Anakin knows he must not let this slip. The slightest twitch will alert the Emperor. Which he almost does when he alerts the Emperor that Luke is on Endor and that the force is with him. When he and Luke meet on the moon Vader is gone Luke is talking to Anakin his whole demeanor and voice is different gone is the strident do or die speech. Replaced by a almost plaintive tone of concern for his son. He even says this aloud when he says its to late for me. What is unsaid but intended is but for you my son their is hope! Vader did not know how or the way of it but he knew that his son was the catalyst to the Emperors defeat. To run now would not end the Emperor it would make him worse. They had to confront him together Vader knew he had to play his part. But strike at the right moment in what he knew was going to be a battle. He would not survive but his son would. That was the only part he could see. That is what happened to a T.

This is actually a really good point! I also think towards the end of their duel, where Vader's hand is sliced off, Vader purposely let Luke overpower him and let him cut off his hand to show Luke that while anger can initially boost your strength, it can cause more damage than benefit and Luke realises this after noticing they both have missing hands, and if he'd gone any further he could've done worse.
Anakin Skywalker is one of the Saddest major deaths in Star Wars, Darth Sidious tried to kill Luke but Anakin didn’t let him. He had to get rid of the vile emperor, and give his life away to save his own son, he couldn’t just let him die
Anakin Skywalker IS the ENTIRE arc of Star Wars! It starts with his innocence, losing his mother, becoming so powerful not even the Council can contain him, becoming a hero to realising he will lose everything he cares about, taking the only path he saw, butchering the galaxy, becoming buried in his own loss and hatred and finally, being redeemed by his son. Rise, fall, redemption! 1-6 tells it perfectly.
And ruins the whole Anakin redemption arc and sacrifice. They should have had Force Ghost Anakin aid Ray in confronting Palpatine to keep that character arc and serve as a passing of the torch.
How about Anakin, who was a child slave, lost his mentor who freed him, lost his mother, kills an entire Tusken Raider village and regrets it, lost his hand, saw his padawan get expelled from the Jedi Order, lost himself to the dark side, lost all his limbs, got his body set on fire, lost his best friend, lost his wife, and forced to wear a clunky, painful suit for the rest of his life?
Now having seen the prequels, this scene makes me weep even more than it did the first time I saw it. In the end, Anakin vindicated himself, and truly did bring balance to the force. He went out in a blaze of glory. So glad it's Hayden as the force ghost. He molded and perfected Anakin's character.
I can only imagine what the reaction must have been in the theatres for those who were watching it for the first time on the silver screen on this iconic moment
It was a feeling of awe, amazement and love of something great and profound. Something I didn't feel as much with the prequels and something I will never or could ever feel for Disney Sta Wars. Disney Star Wars sought to destroy what this scene stood for. The end of a great man, who had fallen but, fulfilled his destiny and was resurrected, even in death.
I cherish this movie. It is my favorite of the three (not including prequels) I was 8 when this came out and still to this day felt in awe when the empire came to an end. Yea, I don’t include Disney’s vision of 7-9. Skywalker saga ends for me here.
Possibly one of the best scenes in history, period. This scenes feels compared to someone feeling betrayed and lied to, leading to his/her master’s death (e.g. Rapunzel, Mother Gothel from Tangled and Quasimodo, Frollo from the Hunchback of Notre Dame). That’s possibly why Return of the Jedi is my top number one favourite Star Wars movie ever.
I agree. I think it adds the fact at first what was running through his mind at that moment. I think because we know what the prequels are it makes a little sense to have that added in.
This scene made me cry when I saw the movie for the first time. For weeks after it I was emotional about Vader’s death. It’s truly the saddest scene in all of Star Wars. The reason I cried is because I watched the prequels first which makes the story far more emotional as you get to see Anakin.
Padme is right There's good in Him.... He lost his Wife but this Time he wouldn't not allowed it to happened to his Son....He Sacrifice his Life For His Son and Duagther....
I was 9 going on 10 when this hit theaters. My Mother took me the night it came out. Seeing this after the fight scene from Empire 2 years earlier was EPIC ! Even better than that....being a grown Man and taking my Mother the day Revenge of the Sith came out so we could see him become Vader. RIP Mom
And this is how the movie saga ended for me. Anakin brought balance to the Force like he was supposed to do. The Disney story is just a bad dream... I love(d) the Expanded Universe books aswell a lot of course!
Not Ashoka, not even Obi-Wan was capable of bringing Vader back to the light side. It took the love and sacrifice of his son to come back to the light❤
I will never stop hating how badly Vaders "nooo" wrecked that moment that was done so perfectly before Lucas starting mucking with these movies in the 90s. Ugh.
I cried the first time I saw this movie and every time I watch it. It makes me sad that right when Luke got to turn his father back into the light side of the Force he died. My other comment is why even though jedis and sith were capable to use the force to move objects, why they couldn't use the force to levitate themselves???
I don't think many people know this but when Palpatine hits Luke with the dark force, when you see those flashes of light reflect off of Vader's helmet, if you can freeze the frame at the exact moment of the flash, you will see the image of a skull superimposed on Vader's helmet. When I would watch this on my VCR I was able to go frame by frame and that's how I discovered it. Can't seem to pull that trick off on UA-cam though. Even after slowing the play rate down.

The music accompanying Vader's death is literally perfect. It elevates a good scene into a great one. Star Wars would have been nothing without John Williams. The music he created for the prequels and sequels was far better than they deserved. They were not worthy of Williams' mastery.

One of the best scenes in movie history the moment Darth Vader had feelings for his son after trying to make him come to the dark side and betraying the empire and the emperor wiw
"Nothing can stop that now" That line proves that it was his pain and rage that was keeping him alive in that suit. Now that he turned back to the light side and became Anakin Skywalker, he wouldn't want to live with that pain in that suit, hence why he said that line.
Except for Yoda who died naturally due to his aging almost all good warriors' death were extremely sad. Qui Gon's unlucky death which Obi-wan had to bear. Anakin's mom's death Mace Vindu's death in the hands of Palpatine assisted by the manipulated Anakin himself Obi wan's sacrificial death by Darth Vader was nothing less heart breaking. And finally the reformed Darth Vader ie Anakin's death especially after he had changed and saved his son from dying by killing Palpatine.
Vader (Anakin) - Master, you tortured me, at least leave my son! (Sidious keeps electrifying Luke) Vader(Anakin) - I have YOU now!!! (Throws Sidious) Luke- Thanks for saving me, Dad. And I'm sorry I cut off your hand, but I think it's fair as you cut my hand too. 😂
When I saw this scene opening day in May 1983 there were people crying literally and others trying to hold back their tears. In the end both Luke and Anakin saved each other. Truly a powerful emotional but beautiful ending!!
John Williams music here is just fantastic and so moving. This scene is very sad Return of the Jedi is my favourite film from the first 3 Star wars movies. 2nd one is Revenge of the Sith
@@JadenMoon1475 So did I. Luke finally got his father back, but just for a moment. A poignant, bittersweet moment. Anyone who is not moved by this scene has no heart. 😢
I wish they would stop trying to improve on the original movies. The scream darth vader makes when he throws the emperor its horrible. just leave well enough alone! : )
Right? It's clearly a re-use of his "No" from Revenge of the Sith.... If I'd never seen the original 1983 version, I probably wouldn't have realized it wasn't there from the beginning. I know every single change they've made - which is how many times I've seen these movies. LOL
0:29 I swear the double "Noo" was added here for one of the Special Editions as I don't remember it at all in the original version. Vader just did this silently to catch the emperor off guard. It was probably added to stupidly coincide with Vader's stupid over the tope "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" line at the end of Revenge of the Sith...
You're right; I saw the original Return of the Jedi, and the "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" was not in it. I'm glad I have the original, unedited Star Wars Trilogy.
That garbage was added into the 2011 Blu-ray. More of Lucas thinking the audience may be too stupid to understand Vader's inner turmoil, so let's dub in words to hold hands. Scene was perfect the way it was, Lucas ruined it.
Anakin couldn't idly stand by and watch Palpatine kill Luke and the last good thing he had in his life. He decided that Palpatine and the dark side will not control him anymore when he picked up Palpatine and threw him to his death in the reactor core but the force lighting severely damaged the suit and couldn't keep him alive anymore. Palpatine purposely weakened Vader by putting many handicaps on his suit such as weakness to force lighting in order to keep Vader subdued and under his control and to kill or punish Vader if he ever tried to retaliate. The side effects of Anakin drawing upon the dark side a lot for years was that it aged him prematurely and horribly disfigured him, giving him the yellow and red eyes. He was angry, bitter, hate and rage filled all the time and they were feeding the dark side. His eyes changed back when he let go of the anger, hate and rage and stopped using the dark side.
not necessarily saddest, but most emotional definitely. no matter how many times I see these three scenes I get a bit emotional and that lump in my throat. very bittersweet
A close runner-up would be the end of ROTS. Especially after Anakin's defeat on Mustafar, where he looses his limbs and gets horribly disfigured, requiring the use of the cyborg suit for the rest of his life. He cuts ties with his former master Obi-Wan. Padme also dies, which is something he deeply feared and is the reason he turned to the dark side in the first place.
How intimidating and terrifying he was, I still find it interesting NO trooper stops to help Vader here. Not one! Sees him with a rebel and doesn't think, they could get ahead here, if they help him?
Of all the comments I see in here, consider the love God has for us… A love so great he gave his only begotten Son to die for us so that we, by God’s grace through our faith, could be redeemed from sin and damnation into his glory and eternal life. It’s as easy as believing the gospel.
I never understood how throwing Palpatine down a shaft would do him any harm at all. He has all the powers that any Jedi has, so he is perfectly capable of levitating back up again.
I mean it's because Palpatine didn't FORESHADOW that Vader would throw him into the Death Star II's reactor shalf, besides, there is one emotion that Palpatine would NEVER understand and that is Love, that's why Vader was able to grab Palpatine and throw him into the reactor shalf because the love for his own son...
Plus the strength of Palpatine’s lightning was stronger than what he would usually use, strong enough to kill Luke, and then when Vader picked him up, it damaged his respirator beyond repair which was the only thing keeping him breathing
His love for Padme was what led him to kill Palpatine, as the reason he chose Palpatine in the first place was to save her life. His Son is the last thing of her left in his eyes.
Despite everything he did as Vader, he redeemed himself and became Anakin Skywalker once more.

Obi wan's sacrificial death by Darth Vader was nothing less heart breaking.
And finally the reformed Darth Vader ie Anakin's death especially after he had changed and saved his son from dying by killing Palpatine.
And the assassination Disney made on luke
@@paulk1773 we do not talk about that waste of time here, please.
That day , only 1 jedi entered the Death Star , but when he came out there were already 2 jedi
He brought balance to the force
probably one of the greatest scenes in film history
Vader (Anakin) -
Master, you tortured me, at least leave my son!
(Sidious keeps electrifying Luke)
Vader(Anakin) - I have YOU now!!!
(Throws Sidious)
Luke-
Thanks for saving me, Dad.
Emperor invented the original taser.
0:36 It sounded like he was saying "UNLIMITED POWER"
Disclaimer - I did not add the "NOOOOOOO" to the video. It came in the clip.
John Williams music here is just fantastic and so moving. This scene is very sad Return of the Jedi is my favourite film from the first 3 Star wars movies. 2nd one is Revenge of the Sith
3:19 love this bit of music
Am I the only one, who wants to hug Luke when he starts to cry?
Not a chance. Because I want to also
@@JadenMoon1475 So did I. Luke finally got his father back, but just for a moment. A poignant, bittersweet moment. Anyone who is not moved by this scene has no heart. 😢
I could re watch when Vader throws the emperor over and over lol.
Saddest moment in movie history is when Anakin passes away. Girls cry during Titanic, I cry when Anakin becomes one with the Force.
LOL
@@jeffwhite4227 we are exactly alike! I know every single change too!
Indeed. Just awful.
Almost cried as a kid on this scene
0:29 I swear the double "Noo" was added here for one of the Special Editions as I don't remember it at all in the original version. Vader just did this silently to catch the emperor off guard.
It was probably added to stupidly coincide with Vader's stupid over the tope "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" line at the end of Revenge of the Sith...
Dialogue coach: repeat after me, James Earl, but stretch it as long as you can now, this time with more feeling - "Nooooooooooooooooooo ... "
@@TheXingster This right here... Vaders silence and looking back and forth perfectly illustrated his struggle... For fucks sake, lucas....
Sidious made Darth Vaders Papa bear come out right there way to go Vader👏🏾 this scene makes me cry every time😢
Well said
the scene where anakin dies never fails to bring me to tears. It just reduces me to a puddle of water- I can't
He said you will not hurt my boy and turn from all the wrong he did
Anakin couldn't idly stand by and watch Palpatine kill Luke and the last good thing he had in his life.
One of my favorite too.
not necessarily saddest, but most emotional definitely. no matter how many times I see these three scenes I get a bit emotional and that lump in my throat. very bittersweet
So glad they added in the 'no' impossible to tell what he was thinking otherwise 🙄
No way anybody could survive that!
I I actually prefer the old version where he didnt say "no"
Sheev the emperor has exactly 88 years.
How intimidating and terrifying he was, I still find it interesting NO trooper stops to help Vader here. Not one! Sees him with a rebel and doesn't think, they could get ahead here, if they help him?
All they care about is getting off
I'm surprised no one helped Luke carry his father. The funeral pyre scene was excellent.
Sebastian Shaw! Most of us had no idea back then who he was. Great they cast him instead of let us say Burt Reynolds or Larry Hagman.
Yes because regretting your actions when you are on the brink of death definitely makes up for your previous atrocities.
To me this wasn't the saddest part at all. He helped turn his father from evil back to good.
Always get cracked up after Darth Vader looks down a watches him while he's screaming falling to his death 🤣🤣🤣 that's bad ass
There was always that good part of him that was left. He just needed it brought out.
That why we can turn from wrong and he love his son and daughter
Everything about Luke and Vader in this film honestly makes this my favorite movie of the original trilogy
Dubbing the voice over "noooooo" is the saddest moment in movie making history
There was, at all, good in Anakin.
I have really cried that 😭😭😭
Of all the comments I see in here, consider the love God has for us… A love so great he gave his only begotten Son to die for us so that we, by God’s grace through our faith, could be redeemed from sin and damnation into his glory and eternal life.
It’s as easy as believing the gospel.
The Jedi came back
No more electric schock to revive another unless is safe or you kill another...
@@fa11endawn16 That explains how he got thrown into the shaft, but not why he didn't immediately levitate himself out of the shaft.
@@GeraldM_inNC It's because that doesn't work, that's NOT how the Force works.
@@fa11endawn16 We saw Vader throw Luke down a shaft ("All too easy"), and Luke levitated out of it immediately.
Plus the strength of Palpatine’s lightning was stronger than what he would usually use, strong enough to kill Luke, and then when Vader picked him up, it damaged his respirator beyond repair which was the only thing keeping him breathing
LordVader a Sith Lord redeemed himself and became Anakin Skywalker again, The Return of The Jedi
"Herself"
this scene is so sad i cry every time i see this like now too😭 respect darth vader/anakin ✌
Me too. It's remains me on the thief on the cross. God is willing to go the extra mile to save someone.
I held my breath in the movie when that helmet came off
Episode 1 through 6 are just perfect Art so beautiful and just make sense 7-9 are just not Star Wars it destroys so much we love about this
Anakin a tué l'empereur
C'était l'élu qui ramènera l'équilibre dans la force !
Did anyone else notice the wires in Anakin’s mouth?
The saddest moment is that they addesd this stupid "NOOO!" To what used to be a perfect scene.
Unfortunately, this footage is taken from the stupid version of the Star Wars originals. "nooooo" UGH.
3:39 i got emotional such nostalgia from that music
His love for Padme was what led him to kill Palpatine, as the reason he chose Palpatine in the first place was to save her life. His Son is the last thing of her left in his eyes.
This isnt a sad moment it should be a happy moment anakin was finally free
Le film est magnifique
Thing is, if somehow, Vader survived, the Rebellion would have without doubt had him executed as a war criminal...
That is so sad and so brutal and so so so upseting
I thought boba fetts death was the saddest part of the movie. To kill him like that was bullshit after all the crap he had been through.
have you watched a tv series called "The Book of Boba Fett" ? Watch it if you have not lol
Anakin was still the chosen one
One of the lightess moments of the real and genuine saga [the other stuff its really poor in argument and dialogues]
