This fight is better than any in the sequel trilogy for one reason: it’s STORY driven. Notice how there’s barely any actual fighting going on in all of this. Even in Empire, the real conflict wasn’t really physical, but psychological. And that’s what makes the OT so special, even despite some flaws in Return of the Jedi, like the second act & ewoks. This segment alone stands out as one of the all time great Star Wars moments, and I love it!
Wait, the second act of Return of The Jedi? I would have thought people hated how the first quarter of the movie takes place on Tatooine, within the confines of Jabba’s palace and skiff, just trying to get Han Solo back into the squad. If I saw this for the first time in 1983, I would have assumed that George Lucas spent a lot of time on that one part of the movie, completely forgot that there was all of Endor and Death Star II to film, and then scrambled to get Endor done quickly while also incorporating the Ewoks for the little kids watching. Not gonna lie though, I loved Return of The Jedi, especially the final space battle.
itwontcomeout5678 I would probably say that this movie pulls a Rouge One/Endgame move in the sense that the third act makes up for almost any complaint you have had with the movie before... if that makes sense?
@@TheInvincibleH except in the instance that he's had interaction with Force ghost Obi Wan since ESB. So there's a good amount he still could have learned from him, given that he visited Luke and Yoda often enough.
Same! The anger Luke shows while fighting his father combined with the musical score that plays after Luke yells “Never!” still gives me goosebumps to this day, just like it did when I first saw the movie with my mom back in 2011.
In the novelization of ROTJ it goes into what Luke is thinking at that moment. He decides Leia is the only hope if he fails. He can't let Vader get to her. He'll kill Vader and himself to stop that from happening.
Palpatine wanted to know if Luke was powerful enough to defeat Vader(he was). It's basically the Dooku situation(both scenes are purposefuly similar). If Luke dies, Palpatine still has Vader as his powerful apprentice and the threat of a Jedi that could surpass Palpatine is gone. If Luke defeats and kills Vader, he gets an even stronger apprentice. It's a win-win scenario for him(until Luke refuses to kill Vader, of course)
I love the fact that Vader does the safer option by doing the saber throw instead of engaging Luke at the High ground. It suggest that Vader has learned his lesson when it comes to engaging an opponent who has the high ground.
Something that crossed my mind was that Vader was right. If Luke failed here he would have certainly been able to turn Leia. The death of her planet and finally her brother would definitely tip her over the edge and make her much more susceptible to the dark side
thats exactly what happened in that "What if" comic they made if Luke's torpedo failed to take out the Death Star. Vader and Palps captured Leia again, and found out through the force the truth behind her heritage. They started to train her, and well, she went full sith
I watched the movie again yesterday and i just wonder: Why Lea? Why even Luke? Sidious knew Luke was stronger and wasnt easy to convince to become part of the dark side. It was obvious he wouldnt turn, so the whole dark side aspect was kinda irrelevant. Even more with Lea. She wasnt even a Jedi, why would they try to get her to the dark side? Im certain vader only said that to anger luke and lure him out of hiding.
@@CODA96 because Luke is the son of the chosen one and has tons of untapped potential power. Palpatine wants the most powerful force user as his apprentice, which he apparently wants to possess at some point. That fight between Vader and Luke was basically a test. between who is the most powerful force user. When Luke chose the light over the dark, this right here was a temper tantrum if anything. Palpatine finally ad someone who could beat his best servant, and this guy refused to work for him.
@@ethanharmer5151 I still dont get the whole situation at all. Luke had no reason to join the Dark Side. Literally none. Anakin joined the dark side because he believed he could save Padme with these powers. Palpatine was slowly manipulating him for years about the Jedi Council being corrupt and fueling his hate towards not becoming a master, aswell as his arrogance to be the strongest. It made perfect sense, but why Luke??? Palpatine neither manipulated him, and neither did they have Lea or Han as a Hostage. Hell, Palpatine even showed him that the rebellion is ''lost'' and everyone would die, if anything thats MORE reason to destroy Palpatine and NOT join the dark side. I really dont wanna say this, but this just feels like bad writing. Palpatine should have blown up endor while Luke was on it and be done with it. Luke had 0 reason to join him and was stronger than Vader, so Palpatine literally killed himself.
Can we just appreciate Ian McDiarmid in this? You can truly FEEL the darkness in sideous, you can feel the weight of his words, his gravitas. A truly incredible performance from a truly incredible actor.
How about when he smiles in delight after saying "and now young Skywalker you will die" and starts frying him again enjoying the pain he he is inflicting.
And then disney trilogy happens... Prequels may not have been perfect, but at least their final duel was just as meaningful and emotional as this one. TROS end battle was just nonsense.
Notice how Palatine said "strike me down and your journey to the dark side will be complete" Luke goes for him, but is stopped by Vader. Like Vader was preventing Luke from fulfilling the same fate as he once did...signs of Anakin coming back...
Vader could've backstabbed the Emperor. Luke alone, or Vader alone maybe couldn't beat the Emperor, but together they could beat him easy. If they had killed him they would both be on the dark side? Is this not what Vader wanted, to rule with his son? If he changed his mind about turning Luke then backstabbing the Emperor seems ideal, but then Vader would stay on the dark side and inevitably Luke would follow? Or was Vader so conflicted that it affected his reason? It seems, for the sake of the story, Vader had to die in order to be redeemed. Him surviving would not have done it. Say he did backstab the Emperor and then turned to the light. What then? That's not enough for redemption, also no one would ever accept Vader back in the rebellion, or new republic or whatever - the "good guys" wouldn't have him that's for sure.
I love how the movie handles Luke's short fall. it's not the offer of power, or anything like that. Rather it's the fact that wants to protect his sister, it overwhlems him and for a moment he slips and he falls into it. And then seeing his dad's robotic hand, the same to what he has, it pulls him back. It's the urge to protect his family that pulls him towards the dark side, and it's seeing what the dark side did to his family that pulled him out
In a contrast to the Prequels where Anakin goes through a similar journey. In the first episode, Anakin was selfless, helping a bunch of random strangers with the wise advice of his mother on Tatooine, and again on Naboo when he blew up the Droid Control Ship. Only, unfortunately, Palpatine got his eyes on him, and began the grooming and manipulation. Ten years later, in the second part, Anakin listened to the Jedi not to go back for his mother despite his warnings, being told "dreams pass in time" and other offhanded comments in the novels and comics. When he eventually went back, his mother died in his arms, and the Jedi's lack of understanding basic human emotions led him to his first taste of the Dark Side. His love for Padmé brought him back or else he would have fallen on Tatooine. Palpatine's manipulations persisted throughout the Clone Wars. Having been alienated from Obi-Wan mostly afterwards, their bond was as it could have been. The comment about Anakin saying "Obi-Wan is the closest person he has to a father" is not irrefutable proof that Anakin absolutely saw Obi-Wan as a father figure-it is obviously proof that he *wanted to* but Obi-Wan brushed him off. Anakin is the archetypal *lost boy* who attaches on (rightfully) to any older male authority figure and as sees them as a surrogate father. After AOTC and after this line Anakin never calls Obi-Wan his "father" or anything like it again. By the time of Revenge of the Sith, it is Palpatine to whom Anakin has transferred his need for a paternal figure messed up stuff. Why? Because Obi-Wan had totally refused that role and Anakin, because of various events, no longer felt he should trust him. Just a reminder of the failures of the Jedi Order. In ROTS, his manipulator encouraged him to kill a defeated threat, and he took it as a legal order and did it. He lost sleep, worrying about his wife and child(ren). Like Luke, it was not just about power. It was about wanting to protect the one he loved. Unfortunately, he couldn't pull back before it was too late. Those manipulations piled up, the alienations from his comrades, etcetera, Anakin couldn't bear the stress and all of what he could have lost, and lost it anyhow.
I always liked how Luke looks at Vader's missing hand and sees it's machine and then looks at his own machine hand, and realizes he's on his way to becoming his father.
" I will not fight you " Nerd fanboys : " OMMMMMGGGGGG HE TRAINED HE TRAVLLED AND DONT WANNA FIGHT LUKE IS THE MMMMMMMMGGGG HE IS THE GAAAWD " Then after luke rage a bit swing is sword left to right with no accuracy whatsoever You fanboys still be like : " OMMMMG SOOOO GOOOD WRITING " So whats good now that hes the " good guy " or the " raging guy " Cause in the end he won cause of his rage and not cause hes good xD The writing in this 3 first movies are so bad.
Vader loved his family. He still had love within him. Luke called him on that when he said, I sense the conflict within you, I don't believe you can bring yourself to destroy me... Luke was right and deep down inside Vader knew it. That's one of the reasons this scene is so powerful. Darth Vader is a total bad ass. He's done very bad things. Yet facing his son in battle caused him to show a tremendous amount of restraint. Because in his heart, he's still Anakin... And Anakin ultimatley turned to the dark side to save the people he loved... I choked up when I watch this scene too. Epic cinema and storytelling for sure! In the end, they did indeed overthow the Empire together.
I absolutely feel the same way. It’s more of a difficult way of saying goodbye to one of the most exciting and unbelievably tough villains and all of history… I love the UA-camr critical drinker and his take on movie villains.
4:04 When Luke screams "never" and charges vader always gets me. The background music is so powerful. John Williams is a legend and No one can ever really replace him.
Very, very true. Although, I'd say that should it ever come to needing a replacement that either Michael Giacchino or Alan Silvestri would be the best choices. Not saying we *need* - or *want* - a replacement of John Williams, but if there ever is one, I'd say it's a choice between Michael and Alan.
Imagine if Luke didn't care as much as he did here and went... "Ok fuck this shit Sidious you're too fucking annoying and dangerous to be kept alive, I'm going to kill you because I want to practice my Jedi beliefs in peace!" (Wham!) Technically, the whole scenes from start of the Throne room was more like a family gathering and deadly argument between Father and Son. Darth Sidious you're a fucking outsider with no business butting into their family affair gtfo man.
Sidious wasn't going to defend himself. He would've willingly been a martyr for Luke's anger to just take his place knowing the only known Jedi just screwed up his chance to make things right.
UltimaKeyMaster If he don't, Luke decided not to kill him out of anger but out of the fact that as long as Darth Sidious stays alive, Luke will never be able to practice his Jedi beliefs in peace. Then went "meh" at the Dark Side and went to live happily ever after because Darth Vader suddenly doesn't seem to care that much about striking down in anger or not because he's too busy going all over the places telling everyone that he has a son and a daughter.
@@aprinceofearthsea4875 totally true, but also it's not the same purpose....this end of he story the aclyote is helping to build. The acolyte is showing how the fall of he jedi begins...Luke is showing its redemption. One is by definition going to be more satisfying then the other.
and fallen order was decades before battle of yavin New Hope or even ROTJ, and was 5 years after anakin became darth vader, so at the time he was fully more powerful and at great potential as a dark lord. but as powerful as he is even at old age, yes he defintelty still have power but its not as strong as in the past, and yet he was holding back (his dark side feelings too) against luke so luke won.
@@Innersanctum_ Mate, the "sequels" (calling them that is a joke in and of itself) are what I wipe my ass with after trying to digest the epicness that is Episodes IV to VI.

That shot where Luke and Vader are fighting behind the staircase all dark with the green/red lightsabers glowing and the music is my favorite moment in the entire Star Wars saga. I get the chills and want to cry every frigging time!
I typically don't get sad about celebrity deaths, but I was truly saddened to hear about the passing of James Earl Jones today. I grew up with Star Wars and always admired his deep, resonant, mellifluous voice (so much so, that I have tried to emulate that voice; the degree to which I have been successful in that regard is up for debate haha). And the facts that he overcame his childhood stutter and rose above the racism of his formative years are so inspiring to me. I am also honored to have shared my birthday with such an iconic actor. Rest in power, James. You lived a good, long life.
My Dad took me to see this when it first came out in theaters. I lost Dad in March 2020. We didn’t have the greatest relationship, but in the end, as with Luke and Anakin, me and Dad made peace. This movie has more deeper and powerful meaning years later. RIP to ALL Dads, no matter what.
@@robstyles2675 - Hey, thanks for responding. I don’t know If you have your Dad or not, but I would say make peace with him. We all have a Dad out here, whether we know him or not. The goal is to have peace of mind. That’s everything!
It is so good. The final clash is insanely good. This is a cinematic masterpiece. I feel bad for whoever is leading heaven's orchestra, because when John Williams passes, they are out of a job.
It rises like a dread fear at the fearful power of good in us all.. just because you have the enemy backed into a corner and defeated doesn't mean you should beat them to death until there's nothing left. That is how evil changes travels from one form to another.
@4:19 - 4:27: One of my favorite shots in the entire franchise. The music, the way Luke stands, the big swooping arcs the lightsabers make before contact, the anger and emotion, the silhouettes, the camera strafe... it's damn beautiful.
I think Luke tapped into the saber style that only Mace Windu was known to use - VAAPAD (im only saying this because Luke did use dark side agression....but he was able to control iit after he had rendered Vader defenceless)
@@Darklord666123 he didnt control his dark side while fighting, he suppressed it afterwards. But who can really tell for sure with this horrible choreography
One interesting detail I love here is that every time we've seen Anakin/Vader in a duel, he always fights aggressively. His lightsaber form emphasizes being on the attack. Whenever he fights Dooku, Ventress, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Cal, Starkiller, Kanan, even Luke the first time. He's always on the offensive. Always on the attack. This is probably the first time we see him in a duel where he's on the defensive.
Agreed. In the last part where Luke embraces his anger and lashes out swinging wildly, Luke is literally thrusting Vader back with every saber to saber push. Vader tries to resist and yet is still pushed back and pushed around. Despite being twice the size of Luke, having equal force powers and having superior robotic strength he is being physically overpowered. Almost sad to watch.
@@attilaseyfullah8522 I don't think so. Is the wheezing and what seems to be the breaking down of his life support and grabbing for the railings to support himself also an act? It's a great scene but leaves itself open to too many interpretations. When it comes down to it, Darth Vader is a child killer and deserves the pasting he got.
@@attilaseyfullah8522 I wouldn’t say he lost on purpose, but rather that I think at this point in his life he had nothing left. He realized Luke would never join him, he knows that Sidious is trying to get rid of him in favor of Luke, and he’s sure that he’s beyond saving. I think he just doesn’t have a reason to fight anymore and just… gives up.
@@attilaseyfullah8522 I think he just got overwhelmed by the sudden shift in fighting posture. He hasn't really had to try much in the last 20 years and certainly hasn't had to expect dueling opponents in the last 20 years to have any real tricks up their sleeves in terms of form. While he is holding back he really was overwhelmed
Vader hated himself after a lifetime of bad decisions. Ben was on the edge between dark and light, and the prospect of someone so strong with the force giving in frightened Luke, so much he instinctively drew his weapon. He reigned himself in, but by then his nephew saw all the evidence he needed to commit to the dark.
@@Avenger85438 hence why vader was conflicted but luke saw the light still in him, anyways thats not the point, the point is luke saw good in vader even after everything he did from hunting jedi he once knew and trained with etc to killing children, i would consider killing children a no going back momentm yet even after that luke still saw good in his father, yet luke could not see good in his own nephew and that was without ben drawing his lightsaber to lukes jedi academy
YES!! I totally agree. The “good” in him saved Luke right then and there, although at that point he hadn’t fully turned back to the light and was still conflicted. Good call!
I am glad that I am not the only one who had that thought! Also, even though I had already watched the prequels, when Vader prevented Luke to kill Palpatine I came to the conclusion that even as a Sith Lord, Anakin is still the Chosen One, the end of the Sith will come by him not by Luke.
4:20 is my absolute favourite shot in all of Starwars, the camera movement and Lukes desperate anger mixed with the soundtrack gives me goosebumps every time.
4:05 that score is so underrated. The distinct sadness and emotion in it shows how Luke loses himself in his feelings, giving into fear, hate, and even love as he tries desperately to kill his own father to protect his friends… it’s just… perfect
In my opinion this is the greatest fight in Star Wars history.... NOT because of how unbelievable the lightsaber fight is, it doesn't blow you away... but because of the way it makes you feel. The emotion. That's what the original trilogy got spot on.
To be fair as much as people complain bout the prequel saber duels which were awesome. After seeing what fans made of the reimagined ep4 vader vs obiwan duel, id love for the same team to redo the OT saber duels in their same style and have george lucas canonize those scenes in new releases.
I love how Luke and Anakin are basically the same. The way he taps into the dark side to take Vader down is exactly how Anakin was in the later seasons of Clone Wars.
They did a few scenes in TCW where Anakin uses several overhanded chops downward which is a nod to how Luke finishes Vader in this scene. They also primarily used the same saber form and are around the same age
No, not basically the same. At the pivotal moment, Luke turned away from the dark side; refused to strike down an evil, yet defenceless, opponant. Anakin meanwhile slaughtered innocent children without hesitation, not to mention murdering defenceless Dooku whilst still ostensibly a follower of the light.
For me this feeling is that right now happens something terrible, something pre-destined, prophecied. And epic as well. The fall of one more hero of light.
1:46 “You are unwise to lower your defences” What I like about this line is that deep down Anakin cares about his sons fighting technique and is ultimately pointing out a weakness in his defence skills
@@erikssgss7936Not really. Don't get me wrong, Luke actually is a talented Lightsaber duelist. His lightsaber skill is actually prodigious, and in this fight, he's actually as skilled as Vader in Lightsaber combat. George Lucas even says that Luke and Vader could have an even sword fight at this point in time without Vader stomping him. That being said, Vader also wasn't trying to beat Luke for a majority of this fight. During their duel on Bespin, Vader literally uses the Force in conjunction with his Lightsaber. If he was actually trying to kill Luke, Vader would have absolutely stomped him. But because Vader just essentially limited this to a sword fight, Luke actually stood a chance. Of course, I think if Luke uses the Dark Side, he's better than Vader in pure Lightsaber combat (we even see Vader get genuinely overwhelmed here), but like I said, Vader wasn't trying to kill Luke. He didn't play smart. He just antagonized Luke and made the young Jedi lose his cool.
No father would actually fight at full power against his son, and Vader was literally obsesessed with luke since he thought that he is the only remnant of padme
For those arguing Luke did indeed surpass Vader once he used Jedi Fury, fully tapping into the darkside. The novel itself states that Palpatine himself was afraid of that power being used against him, with Sidious saying Luke could destroy them, with many other sources also sighting this. The novel also says that Sidious confidence in that moment was an act as Luke looked within him and sensed his fear. So Luke very briefly attained power comparable to and superior to that of Sidious but once he calms down he loses the rage boost and fatigue also sets in(as it happens after a fight is over and you calm down from rage)leaving him vulnerable, along with dropping his lightsaber like the lovable naive fool that he is. This is impressive for Vader cause he held his own against this power and Luke still had to put a lot of effort to beat him down, this solidifies that Vader is relative to Sidious power in this film,Lucas statement of EP6 Vader being 80% of Sidious makes a lot of sense under this context. Without using the darkside Luke was an equal overall tier with Vader but definetly weaker and on the lower end, with him somewhat gaining the advantage by using his aggressive feelings when kicking Vader down. But normally you can tell Vader has a definitive edge
100% agree. I've said before in conversations with people about this scene that in those fleeting moments during Luke's rage, he could've beaten almost anybody, including Palpatine himself. Palp always knew that a Luke with no restraint would be a threat, but to see it right in front of you makes that threat much more immediate and startling.
Imo, the music makes this the best lightsaber duel in the entire series. It's the only one that feels like there's any emotion behind it, aside from the end of RotS. But we're not gonna go there.
Almost like in 50ies/60ies epic Bible movies, like The Ten Commandments. Also check out the music in Conan the Barbarian. It's similar and i love this scene in which he discovers his later sword in an ancient tomb: ua-cam.com/video/RlBcDnRzmM0/v-deo.html
I love the visual story telling in this scene. Especially when Luke's face is half in the shadow and half in the light as he is tempted by the darkside. Then when he lets his anger get the better of him he is obscured by the shadows and attacks.
Dude, I just made a comment about the same thing. I noticed it a long time ago when watching ROTJ, since it is my favorite movie of the entire Star Wars series. I brought up the "find" utility to see if anyone else possibly noticed this small but VERY crucial "tell" as far as what Luke was internally thinking and the possible future path Luke might take as far as his current choices were about to seal the deal for him. This very small cut of the scene is pretty much what sealed the deal for me on why my vote goes to ROTJ when saying which Star Wars I like best!! It really highlights the fact we all have choices in life and even in the most dire of situations, no matter how difficult it seems it might be when considering the consequences of our moment to moment choices, at the very worst it's a 50/50 decision and the easy way out never pays off like choosing what is good for us in the long run!! Thanks for being "that guy!" I was super duper hoping that someone else picked up on this very small detail given the gravity of the scene and how things turned out afterwards!
Luke taps into the dark side and momentarily gives into his anger to protect the sister that he loves. Disney and current Lucasfilm does not and never will understand who Luke Skywalker is. He never would have abandoned his sister or his friends. He never would have given up on his nephew.
”So, the late-2012 idea of a Luke Skywalker haunted by the betrayal of one of his students, in self-imposed exile & spiritually in ‘a dark place’, not only precedes Rian Johnson’s involvement in Star Wars but J.J. Abrams’, as well,”-Phil Szostak, Luke being a bitter hermit was Lucas' idea all along.
Love that final fight scene, Luke just flailing at random directions like a nutter. Vader must be thinking "omg noob do you even know what you're doing? you're just spamming attacks! what happened to coreography and aaaaagh my hand!"
Jared Griffin what I don't get is he cut off Vader's hand a robotic hand.so why the hell would he got so fked up even with his breathing getting all raspy like gulping for air.why would that happen when he lost his hand
He is integrated in a *cybernetic* suit that also acts as a life support system. I assume such a complex piece of technology doesn't handle being cut apart very well. Also, his integration into the suit is not without problems, and he is in constant pain from it +his injuries. He is basically a cripple and Luke just took a wheel off his wheelchair...
The anger that Luke felt wasn't an anger of hate, it was one to protect the ones he loves. Much more powerful than Anakin's anger he felt when he wanted to gain power to help those he loved. This movie/scene brings so many emotions that you honestly don't care about the fight itself, rather the battle to save the ones you love from the Dark Side. This movie brings a great moral, it's easy to hate and destroy, but to love and fight for something, someone else is one of the greatest gifts we can give.
but at the same time, we see that Luke looks at his own robotic hand and then back to vader's robotic hand to signify that he realizes that anger (no matter where it comes from) will lead him to become like his father, and if he continues then he'll turn to the dark side, hence why he throws away his lightsaber after his realization.
@sonicartzldesignerclan5763 vor 1 Sekunde Love and hatred is ruled in a human brain in the same section what makes both the same feeling but you as human feel it different. That makes your point pointless.
@@myamdane6895You're missing the entire point if you think this is righteous anger. This is what Palpatine wanted Luke to do. Luke's fear was triggered, just as Anakin's fear was. Fear is a very unhealthy emotion that can lead to anger and aggression. Understandable aggression? Absolutely. But can it lead to the dark side? Yes. Like Obi-wan said: "Your feelings do you credit, but they can be made to serve the Emperor"
This is without a doubt the best lightsaber duel from the original trilogy. Their choreography perfectly captures their emotion. Luke giving into his anger and fighting in blind rage and Vader, who fights out of devotion, but is clearly holding back. The cinematography, fantastic. The music, fantastic. Just wow
This is the first time you see Vader in full retreat in the entire original trilogy. Contrast that with the way he walked through the Hoth base, seemingly unstoppable. Luke's lean body contrasts with the imposing bulk of Vader's cape. For the first part of the shot, Vader's lightsaber isn't hitting its mark. For the next part, Luke seems to have momentum, giving Vader no time to do anything but block while retreating. The shot is a simple pan left, showing the fighters side-by-side, as in a fighting game, with Vader in retreat.
I love how Luke's fighting style completely changes when he taps into the Dark Side when Vader taunts him. Before he was playing quicker and more passive, focusing on blocking Vader's attacks and avoiding him with some grace to his moves, not wanting to fight. But when Vader threatens him with Leia, he goes entirely on the offense and starts slashing everywhere, missing a lot of his attacks at first and just constantly attacking Vader, pushing him back and down. And then he just starts beating into his lightsaber like if he were hitting someone with a bat. He went from defensive and elegant avoidance to rage-induced constant striking, every hit just full of anger towards his father. Hamill is very talented in showing just how careless and angry Luke got during the fight.
Yes! The passion of love! "Love is the answer to the dark side." -Yoda Fighting for love allows one to use anger without falling into dark side bondage. Luke's fighting style, in this sequence, is my favorite of all time by far!
4:04 NOTHING will EVER top this sequence for me in all of Star Wars history. The emotion is so perfect, if there was a way to convey the force being distraught by conflict it is the music in this scene. If you could see the force visually you would see energy waves flushing out of every swing from Luke as he dominates Vader's own strength.
I always felt that Vader was genuinely shocked that Luke went full rage at him, and even more shocked that he refused to fall fully into it... Something he never thought possible... He had proof that it could be done now... So he tried as well...
For Darth Vader the Dark Side was something like an addiction to a drug. Luke's refusal to join the Dark Side was a proof to Vader that he could overcome it too!
Rught. I dont Vader did that to plead Luke to spare him or anything. It was more like him telling him to calm down for his own good and not join the emperor. Vader’s ulterior motive has been to have Luke join him against tge emperor, nit the other way around. Vader didn't care if he died, it was just a plead for him to stop him on the progressive track he is on.
Well, Vader has been in Luke’s position before. Anakin should’ve spared Dooku, because it was not the Jedi way to kill an unarmed prisoner. In the same manner, Sidious tries to rid himself of Vader’s unrealized potential. But Luke comes to his senses and tosses down his weapon, declaring himself a Jedi in the footsteps of his father.
The parallel between Vader’s missing hand and Luke’s matching, also robotic, black gloved hand is so perfect. A gentle reminder that Luke is one bad choice away from being consumed by the Dark Side, but he continues to fight to protect rather than to attack. Best Star Wars movie

This fight is the most intense and gripping of the whole saga. Not because of skill with the lightsaber or Force Powers, but because it is so intensely psychological and personal. The real fight is not between Luke and Vader, it is between Luke and Palpatine, for the soul of Anakin/Vader.
Yes and in a way it's Vader and Luke vs Palpatine, who is sitting there manipulating them both. Even though on the surface it appears that Luke and Vader are fighting, see the way that Vader stops Luke from striking the Emperor... he is not protecting him, but protecting Luke from falling to the dark side, which is what Palpatine wants.
This scene hits harder when you have a son of your own. When I was a kid I thought this fight was cool. Now that I’m an adult and a father, I think it’s heartbreaking. The way Luke looks at Vader when sidious is talking to him and his eyes say “dad… please help me.” Honestly this is one of the best stories in cinema history. George Lucas and his crew did an amazing job. It’s a shame Disney came along and fucked everything up. Edit: also, Vader wasn’t protecting Sideous from Luke when he blocked his lightsaber. He was protecting Luke from the dark side. Vader saved his son not once, but twice in this scene. He didn’t want his child to share his fate.

Each stroke of Luke's sword drives his father further toward defeat_ *Hate leads to suffering.* _The Dark Lord is knocked to his knees, and as he raises his sword to block another onslaught, Luke slashes Vader's right hand off at the wrist, causing metal and electronic parts to fly from the mechanical stump. The Emperor watches with uncontrollable, pleased agitation_
I love how Revenge Of the Sith and Return of the Jedi is the turning point for our protagonists. Anakin had continued to go into the dark side, following the order to kill Count Dooku, indirectly ascending the time of Count Dooku and was worried about Padmé too much to not think straight, causing him to lose her, Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Rex, and all of his friends. Luke had struggled with the dark side and was greyish at this time and was able to resist Palpatine's manipulations, becoming his own person and being the embodiment of what a Jedi should have be. Because of resisting Palpatine's grooming and manipulation, Luke hadn't lost his friends and family and had started a new Order that carried down for generations to come.
Actually this fight is the reversal of Dooku VS Anakin in episode 03: both fights take place in front of Palpatine and end with a cut hand. But while Anakin will let himself to hate and kill his opponent, Luke won't do it.
This fight has so many great moment in the span of 5 minutes, it also does things in that time better than any other time in the saga 1)The Emporer tempting Luke to the Dark Side 2)Luke kicks Darth Vader in the chest and he flies down stairs 3)Luke refuses to fight 4)Vader sneak attacks Luke saying "it is unwise for you to lower your *defenses*!" 5)Luke's Jedi jumps never get old 6)Luke probes the conflict in Vader, who denies it even exists 7)Vader performs the *first saber throw* in the saga 8)Vader probes Luke's thoughts when he hides, *discovers* he has a sister, and enrages Luke by insulting Obi-Wan again and threatening to turn Leia to the Dark Side 9)Luke uses all his power and anger abd cuts his father's arm off the way his arm was removed, showing that even though they've traveled different paths and arrived in different places in there journeys, they are both quite similar 10)Luke wins and ends the fight (the video ends before this happens)
what I like the most is how their battle begins, I think Vader took his saber out and saved Luke from the Dark Side. it's like Luke wanted to strike down the Emperor, but Vader stopped that because he didn't want his son to become like him, I love that.
@@Nick-zc4po I'd say there's a difference between snapping at the guy who slaughtered all the jedi, killed your mentor, cut your hand off, froze your best friend in carbonite, threatened to turn your sister to evil and was the right hand man of a fascist dictator who murdered millions, and almost killing your nephew because you had a vague feeling he was bad.
Not to mention the footwork. It's something I just noticed, but Luke mostly leads with his right foot, up until he's bashing Vader at the end of the fight. Maybe indicating he's "in the right" up until the point he's "in the wrong", meaning he dipped in the dark side with the "sinister" foot. I'm mostly overanalizing, I know. But it's curious nonetheless.
This segment alone stands out as one of the all time great Star Wars moments, and I love it!
you can't even compare the incredible and intense dialogue throughout this scene to any of the new ones.
Anakin Vs Obi-Wan might be the best visual duel in the saga but this one holds the most meaning.

I love how Luke ignores Vader's threats to turn him to the dark side, but loses his shit when he threatens Leia.
He went full protective mode is as dark as a Jedi can get not to destroy but keep those safe
You threaten my sister.
You die..!
In the novelization of ROTJ it goes into what Luke is thinking at that moment. He decides Leia is the only hope if he fails. He can't let Vader get to her. He'll kill Vader and himself to stop that from happening.
Skywalker males go ape-sh*t when it comes to the women in their lives.
Come on, who does not love his sister. (and I didn't meant in in the wrong way.)
I like how Darth Vader keeps bringing up Obi Wan when he fights Luke almost like he's obsessed with him, which makes sense after RotS
I like that too. So many layers to this story
Me But did Vader spend 12 years on Lotho Minor eating trash food to survive?
Probably he wants to taunt Luke to reach the dark side: he killed Obi-Wan just in front of Luke and Luke was strongly upset when that happened.
It's like poetry so it rhymes
And since obi wan taught him barely anything and yoda’s the guy who actually trained him
You gotta give it to Palpatine though for respecting the 1v1.
Palpatine was a gamer

Coincidence? I THINK NOT!
Also, STOLEN COMMENT ALERT!
This one scene is 100x better than the whole Rise of Skywalker movie
I mean, is not hard
Something that crossed my mind was that Vader was right. If Luke failed here he would have certainly been able to turn Leia. The death of her planet and finally her brother would definitely tip her over the edge and make her much more susceptible to the dark side
“Only your hatred can destroy me.”
thats exactly what happened in that "What if" comic they made if Luke's torpedo failed to take out the Death Star.

Like when Anakin killed Dooku
@@klauseskelinen8168 Underrated by who? Wyho did underrate it?
I love how the movie handles Luke's short fall.
it's not the offer of power, or anything like that. Rather it's the fact that wants to protect his sister, it overwhlems him and for a moment he slips and he falls into it. And then seeing his dad's robotic hand, the same to what he has, it pulls him back.
It's the urge to protect his family that pulls him towards the dark side, and it's seeing what the dark side did to his family that pulled him out
NiCE SUMMARY
+ PALPATiNE'Z GOATiNG THAT HELPED SNAP HiM OUT OF iT
[NOT YELLiNG, JUZT LiKE TYPiNG iN CAPZ]

@@BiggerBadderBrian he loses on purpose, look at him the second before he leans to the left and stands still. He has no reason to do so.
I know right, he tried talking to Vader at least.
Joe Vines Disney sucks. It’s not real Luke.
0:54 Darth Vader wasn't saving Palpatine... He was saving Luke
Finally someone else who thinks the same! I’ve said this to so many people and none agreed with me but like it’s so obvious.
I request elaboration. Like was he saving Luke by not letting him kill the Emperor and fall into the dark side? Is that what it means?

I love how Luke and Anakin are basically the same.
The way he taps into the dark side to take Vader down is exactly how Anakin was in the later seasons of Clone Wars.
And, like Luke, Anakin tapped into the dark side a few times in the clone wars to save his"Sister"like Luke does here. Such a good show lol.

1:46 “You are unwise to lower your defences”
What I like about this line is that deep down Anakin cares about his sons fighting technique and is ultimately pointing out a weakness in his defence skills
Yep! The father in him cant help but train him!😁💪🏿⚔
And that weakness also shows when Luke later throws his lightsaber, leaving him defenseless against the emperor.
Luke is the better fighter
HEAD CANON:Vader blocks the lightsaber from killing the emperor cause he doesn't want Luke to turn.
now that you mention it that does make sense i miss the old star wars....
Wow. You are a genius!
True - that was in the books almost 30 years ago when I read polish translation!
Yeah, Anakin didn't want his son to turn into him. He basically save the entire galaxy from a dark Luke.
Perhaps, but it isn't like the Emperor would have let Luke hit him anyway.
He wants a new apprentice, not someone to replace him.
The music in this is on point
Robert Holding Yes it's the best for that scene . !!

Can you tell me the name of the soundtrack in this part of the movie? Thank you in forward.
I love the visual story telling in this scene. Especially when Luke's face is half in the shadow and half in the light as he is tempted by the darkside. Then when he lets his anger get the better of him he is obscured by the shadows and attacks.
Damn that's genius I didn't even notice that
Eh reading too much into it. Luke will never be Anakin he is too just.
Dude I never noticed that, this scene was already my fav but now nothing will ever beat it
That also happens in force awakens when Ben kills Han
"Obi wan has taught you well." As luke holds the ground will always be cathartic to me.
Luke taps into the dark side and momentarily gives into his anger to protect the sister that he loves.
Disney and current Lucasfilm does not and never will understand who Luke Skywalker is. He never would have abandoned his sister or his friends. He never would have given up on his nephew.
The sequels didn’t show Luke as we all know, although The Mandalorian seemed to get him right

But you fail to realize that snger to protect his loved ones is the exact same anger anakin felt when he fell to the dark side.
but at the same time, we see that Luke looks at his own robotic hand and then back to vader's robotic hand to signify that he realizes that anger (no matter where it comes from) will lead him to become like his father, and if he continues then he'll turn to the dark side, hence why he throws away his lightsaber after his realization.

Also that's the umpteenth time he lost that same arm/hand 😅
The parallel between Vader’s missing hand and Luke’s matching, also robotic, black gloved hand is so perfect. A gentle reminder that Luke is one bad choice away from being consumed by the Dark Side, but he continues to fight to protect rather than to attack. Best Star Wars movie

5)Luke's Jedi jumps never get old
6)Luke probes the conflict in Vader, who denies it even exists
7)Vader performs the *first saber throw* in the saga
8)Vader probes Luke's thoughts when he hides, *discovers* he has a sister, and enrages Luke by insulting Obi-Wan again and threatening to turn Leia to the Dark Side
9)Luke uses all his power and anger abd cuts his father's arm off the way his arm was removed, showing that even though they've traveled different paths and arrived in different places in there journeys, they are both quite similar
10)Luke wins and ends the fight (the video ends before this happens)
Chandler Carrier definitely agree the writing was better back then
what I like the most is how their battle begins, I think Vader took his saber out and saved Luke from the Dark Side. it's like Luke wanted to strike down the Emperor, but Vader stopped that because he didn't want his son to become like him, I love that.
When even Mark Hamill, the actual actor, says that it was out of character, I'd say it's pretty safe to say it's out of character.
The battle between Father and Son... Even the Emperor laughing in the background. A moment of truth regret and forgiveness. Beautiful.
