Hi Sam, regarding the blank headcode boxes. Remember this version is as it was when it retired from Chiltern Railways and they had blank headcode boxes.
Check this video.........ua-cam.com/video/uqjfSlH4_I8/v-deo.html
Hey! Thanks a lot for this - duly noted - that makes a lot of sense! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
As always, great review, Sam! This defiantly has to be the best value model on the market right now!
Thanks a lot Tony - I think it really does have to be one of the best value for sure! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Such a Great valued Model! Great review as always Sam!
Thanks a lot James - really glad you liked it!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video! I think Hornby must be ill... they're selling locos for a reasonable price!!
haha thanks mate! I know it.... but no complaints from me! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Finally a model railway reviewer who links the trains in the description.
haha! I do my best, where possible!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A superb review as always mate! Very good value for money! Such a lovely little unit :)
Thanks very much mate - I really wasn't expecting this to be so good for the money! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi! Sam, now that's one hot train. I love the old BR Green, they all had personality, style and still looks great on any layout. Thanks for showing and sharing my friend!
Thanks Trevor - I agree, real personality there!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My house was going through a renovation, and yesterday I just got my hornby models back from my grandparents house. Finally i got my J50, Raven Q6 and the Southern S15 back!
Oh very nice! Ooh awesome - hope you enjoy them mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hi Sam, I have been into model railways for a long time on and off.I have a fair amount of locos the majority were of vintage DC but now are DCC and most of them I have hot wired myself, your videos have been a great help,at 76 the brain gets a bit slow so thanks for your great videos
Mike
Great to hear that Mike - that's my pleasure, really glad these have been of use!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
love the class 121 such a simple lovely little train great vid sam : )
Me too - they are lovely aren't they?!:D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam I just realised something you have more subscribers than the actual Royal Air Force UA-cam channel just wanted to point that out but great review Sam love the BR bubble Car DMU I've been behind the one on the Wensleydale Railway Many times
haha really?! Blimey I didn't realise that! Oh very nice - how does this compare with the real thing?? :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I still can't believe this is part of the railroad range, thanks for reviewing this excellent model, sam!
I know! It really is top notch - very impressed with this! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hey Sam, as always great video. It's so nice to see that Hornby seem to be getting better in quality again. If you were to do another Thomas locos in real life you could use this awesome loco as Daisy the diesel railcar.
Thanks Prince - yeah I agree, it really is good to see that! Absolutely - I might have to do another soon! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Excellent vid! I got one from a model shop in an NSE livery for £40!
Great video as always Sam! And, as someone who isn't that huge of a fan of diesel engines, I have to agree that this is an absolute gorgeous locomotive.
Thanks a lot King Henry - I agree too, it's just lovely isn't it?? :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I got a Bachmann class 105, 2 car dmu, for 65 pounds, I quite like how the destination sign light up with the main headlights, the inside also lights up.
That's awesome mate - hope you enjoy it! Yeah it's awesome when the boards have lights! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I had one of these and agree with your review. Looks good and a superb runner (mine was DCC). Unfortunately I culled my layout of all traction tyred locos and sold it on Ebay a few months back.
Thanks Simon - ahh can't blame you for that, not a fan of tyres either!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I bought a second hand Hornby 121 earlier this year on EBay Sam, and after you attended to a few issues, she works really well now. Another great review...Regards...Bob
I remember Bob - that was a very nice model too! Glad you liked the video mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
Many people think this is Daisy but I think she is actually a 101/102 DMU. But this does look like her!
“I’m highly sprung, and right up to date!”
Yes absolutely right - I just checked it up too, and she is an 101! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, great review as always. I'm really tempted to get on of these! I'll have to persuade my dad haha.
George
Thanks a lot George - well it's fantastic value for money - hopefully you can persuade him! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Ha, there’s a similar looking one to this on my locks heritage line but it’s 3 or 4 car I think. Great review as always, keep up the great work Sam :D
Ooh really? Yeah a lot of these DMUs are quite similar looking - I struggle to tell the difference sometimes! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
great review Sam :)
Thank you Brian! :D
Yeeeessssss another vid love you sam
haha thanks Floppy - hope you enjoy it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hello Sam, great review of that beautiful bubble car. An excellent price for a nice model. Have three different class 42 and one class 55 diesel locos from Hornby RailRoad brand in the meantime. All are in excellent quality.
Thanks a lot Norbert - I was really pleased with this one! :D
Glad you enjoyed it,
Sam :)
What a lovely little DMU!!!
Thank you Oliver! :D
I need at least two of these in my life. They're now on my list after the deltic.
haha awesome - good luck mate, hope you enjoy them! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I hope to get one to and great video Samstrains.
Fantastic Ben - hope you enjoy it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Got one last year now DCC and has got passengers great runner
Mike
Glad to hear that Mike - they are decent runners! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hiya Sam I've Been A Big Fan Of Your Channel and Videos For A Few Years Now Never Missed An Episode Haha The Class 121 Is Brilliant Have You Thought About Reviewing The Coca Cola 121 DMU ?
my Hornby class 153 doesn't have traction tyres and it only has 2 powered axles! 153s have fabulous detail and directional lights! I recommend the 153!
Ooh that's pretty interesting - I wonder whether it did originally? Sounds like a great model! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks so much Sam you are the best you tuber ever 👍🙂
No worries Karen - really glad you liked it!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks for doing my request!
No problem - I've wanted to do one of these for a while!! :3
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video looks like a brilliant unit great value for money
Thanks a lot David - yes indeed, really impressive this one! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
She runs better than some of the railroad steam models that cost more than twice the price, Agree great value for the money.
I agree - absolutely fantastic really, just a superb model! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hi Sam another great video and these Railroad models seem great value as you can get 2 for the price of the normal Hornby locos as im late to the party I will have to see if I can track one down,
Hey Kevin, thanks a lot for that - absolutely, these really are good value! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Another nice one Sam. I love the BR green because this was the colour of the DMUs at my local station when I was a kid and used to go train spotting. This looks real good value and I think it is quite detailed for a Railroad range. Think if I was running this Id take the couplings off seeing as they were supposed to be single unit running. What's this, bullman in two consecutive videos?
Thanks very much mate - yeah I'm very pleased with this for the price! Oh yes - he's in most videos actually, if you can spot him ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think you deserve a sort of trade card with Hatton’s. You’re forever giving them shoutouts and I’m sure it would help your channel to get a discount on locos and other bits and bobs
haha thanks Richard - I certainly wouldn't turn that down if offered! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Absolutely gorgeous Diesel Railcar there, Mr Sam.
You said you tested her with coaches... perhaps, if you ever run her again, have her pulling a couple of goods vans or milk tankers (prototypical trailing load for a class 121 Railcar on the WR).
My favourite will always be the 101 DMUs... they just look decent.
Seeing as you've done Diesel Multiple Units and now Diesel Railcars...perhaps you should try and get a Diesel Railbus next? 😉
Thanks very much Phil! Yeah absolutely - I should definitely do that next time, good call!
Yeah a Railbus would be awesome - I'll look out for one! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Nice to see a Rail Road model just go's to show they are well worth getting .
For sure - really quite good this one, very happy with her! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam, I swear I've seen class 121 hauling mk 1 coaches before so that would have been cool to have seen that. Cheers Mike
Ahh really? Yeah that would be very cool to recreate - good idea! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
It looks pretty good and very good value for money. I was tempted to preorder this after watching a Barrie Davis video but decided not to as I really want to keep my layout steam locos only but if you like mixed traffic or lean more towards diesels then I can't see how you would go wrong with one of these.
Thanks for the comment mate - that's definitely fair enough mate, I can see why you'd want to stick with steamers! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Insightful review. From any distance beyond 18 inches details aren't that important, and this model is worthy of buying, hands down.
That's fair enough Jeffrey - no reason not to recommend this to you then, it's great! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yet another top video Sam, how do you do it? Regarding my comment below the Ambulance Train Pack i hope i didn't give you the wrong impression about my age, as on my birthday back in January i was 50. It won't matter if i did, i won't worry, anyway keep the great videos coming kind regards, Gary.
Thanks very much mate - that's very kind of you! haha no worries mate - duly noted!
Cheers,
Sam :)
great video.these 121s are good.hornby have done a good job on this 121 as on the previous one. but have you seen the dapol version? i remember the 121s in 1966 at henley on thames station in green with a whisker on the front.
Thanks a lot Peter - no I haven't seen the Dapol version - I bet it's better than this, but obviously much more expensive too!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I am fitting mine with LED’s and I have added passengers. I removed the distracting looking couplers which I think looks much better.
Ooh good luck - sounds a great project! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice model to come into the Railroad range and the price is well set as well. This is also an ex-Lima model but with a much better motor and I think the reason the model has a traction tyre is to prevent wheelslip on steep inclines that can happen with some model trains.
Sam here is a thought that perhaps we all could think about. Do you think that both the ex-Lima Class 60 and the Class 92 toolings that I am assuming that Hornby own since they took Lima over in 2004 could be used as new revised models in the Hornby Railroad range? I think they could have potential for those that are on a budget that cannot afford the premium Hornby Class 60 and the ex-Lima model would more robust for children and budget modellers that just want to just run some trains.
All the best
Ash.
Thanks Ash - yeah this is really fantastic for the money - it is indeed the old Lima version, but the 5-pole mechanism is an unbelievable improvement!
Yeah for sure - it'd be great if they brought back more of those Lima models!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam.
I have a couple off Hornby 121s one in green, the other BR Blue. The one I got though was an R2509 not the R3665 which is an earlier release on eBay. They can still be picked up roughly for the same price as what you paid for yours. I much prefer the earlier version as visually, the speed whiskers on the front looks better than the solid yellow.
Yeah absolutely - they're quite a good buy aren't they?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Thanks. I think it is worth looking on eBay as well. The R2509 is for a shelf project - just under 6 foot long -as it has a mix of Hornby Skaledale, and Bachmann low relief building. It's only a single track between two stations but it's the sort of thing that would be good for a model shop display of various model railway products.
It was originally a Lima Model , Sam. Hornby updated it with a new motor . A good model. It was originally in main range , now Railroad , possibly because Dapol make a 121 that is very detaile. I think it would set you back £100 though
Thanks for the info Russell - it's just like a lot of the Railroad diesels then! I think this makes a great low-cost alternative to the Dapol version then! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Now this looks to be real value for money. I can see how it would be easy to make it look really good. You can put some lights on there and as there are instructions for getting the body off, how about adding some passengers?
Thanks Ian - absolutely, it'd make for a fantastic project for sure!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Amazing vid sam , love the 121, did you know that 121’s is different from the 122 (besides the name)
Thanks a lot Fin - no I didn't know that - I don't know very much about DMUs, thanks for the info! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great Video Mate She is a beauty on the rails anyways excellent review-Henry Of Wales,UK
Thanks a lot Henry - really glad you liked this!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks Mate
Bought one on the strenght of that Sam dont think you could go far wrong at that price and exactly a little weathering practice im thinking.
Looks like i was just intime for the last in stock BR blue /grey
For sure David - you can't go wrong for the price - hope you enjoy it!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Good review Sam, I do like seeing the occasional DMU, though I still prefer steam. And please run the 128 some more, I like that model to.
Me too Patrick - I did enjoy this for a change though! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks, and it was a nice change.
Hi Sam, good review. I love those 121s. When I first moved to Bristol in the mid 80s they were used on routes like Temple Medes to Weston Super Mare, the Seven Beach branch and the Temple Medes to Bristol Parkway shuttle. So I used to ride them regulary. They were dirty, noisey, rattled like a tin full of marbles and clanked and bounced on every point and rail joint. BUT they were the only things around that didn't have blinds behind the driver, so if you grabbed the front seat you got a drivers eye view of the track ahead.
The seats look odd on that model though. Originally when they ran in green the seats were a reddish brown, They only got blue seats when they were reliveried in blue in the early 70's. However I did a bit of research and found that that model is of one Chilten Railways repainted into 60's green for the final few years of service, and the never changed to interior, but left it blue. So prototypically correct, but still looks odd.
Jon
Thanks Jon - ahh very nice, it must bring back memories to see them in model form! Thanks for clearing that up too - this must be based on their later form them, with the blue seats!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Many great memories - day trips to Weston with my mates, going on them to see the girlfriend of the time from BTM to Clifton Down on the Seven Beach line... happy days
It does seem good value for money as I have seen these almost go for that second hand. A pity they can't produce more things for that price. BTW did you say in one of your streams you where thinking of doing a meet at Warley National Model Railway Exhibition?
Thanks a lot mate - I agree, they can go for that much second hand! Let's hope they do more like this soon! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
No probs i think it’s well priced what starter set would you recommend
I think any of the Hornby starter sets are great - but look for one that has a set of points and a siding - those are always much more fun! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That’s a cool looking diesel rail car! That railcar looks very like daisy!
Thanks a lot mate! haha yeah it does look like Daisy! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love it Sam! Can’t believe the last two ran until just last year!!! Why retire them? Bring back heritage diesels on rural lines. Boring modern ones at expensive and not cost effective. Repairing old is far better! Nice vid. Cheers mate!
Thanks Chris! I know - they had an incredibly long life! Hopefully there are some that still run on heritage routes - I think there are!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Brilliant vid beautiful rail car
Thanks Karen, glad you liked it!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I don’t know you sam, but you seem like a good mate, and you have some great locos :) keep it up
You're very kind - thanks a lot for that mate!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Looks very good value.
Thanks Philip! :D
great video! when will you review your lima class 60?
Thanks a lot mate - I still have to do that one, hopefully I'll get around to it soon! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I have one of these from the first re-issue by Hornby. Just changed my DCC chip to a TTS sound chip - class 20. Ok, not the right one but I am not fussy. Why not to a video in a similar vein - how to do a cheap DCC sound conversion to a loco using a Hornby TTS sound decoder.
Oh very cool! DId you manage to hide the speaker okay? Great idea!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
As far as I can see this is the early 1980s tooling from Lima, the only difference is the motor and the addition of the spotlight moulding. The door hinges and the drivers grab rails are wrong, which is handed down from the Lima 117, which was all wrong. It doesn't really spoil the model, I just think Hornby are being a little cheeky marketing a 40 year old model as new with so many mistakes on it.
Thanks for the comment! Yes that's very possible - the same is true for many of the Hornby Railroad diesels! Duly noted though - although luckily they're not charging very much for it any more!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have one. And a 122, blue/grey from Dapol. I hate traction tires. You can get headboards for them, you can do your own. Hornby seems to be comming up to the 'mark'.
Very cool Nigel - yeah I'm not a fan either - and maybe they weren't even necessary on this one? I agree - let's hope they do more like this!
Cheers,
Sam :)
wow! amazung loco sam!!
Thanks Harvey! :D
Sam. Might you share your location? I’ll be visiting the UK next week and wondered if you might be close by? Your videos are some of the very best on the we !!!
Hi mate, sorry I can't do that for privacy reasons - but I hope you have an awesome time in the UK! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains. Sam I was only looking for a shopping recommendation. Week after next I will be in York ( to see the museum!!!) then Chester. Was hoping to know if a local store for HO scale items. Really enjoy your videos!
Hay Sam can you do Thomas's branch line and use the 121 as Daisy with Thomas Percy and toby
Yeah absolutely - that'd be great! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I wish Hornby would revive the old Lima class 60's and do more liveries on the old Lima now Railroad hst... Maybe a Lima 94xx too (Bachmann don't seem to be too bothered with theirs!)
All would be good projects for superdetailing!
Yeah that'd be great to see - let's hope they do so!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Why stater set with what train would you recommend because I’m thinking about buying one
Hi Karen, as I say - I think any of the Hornby ones are great, so long as they include a set of points... just pick whichever one you like the most! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I think it looks amazing and for a great price
Thanks Marry - I agree! :D
hey sam i will give you updates on how my trains are going along and thats a really good engine/train i might get that
That's awesome mate - keep me posted! Glad you liked it - I can definitely recommend this one! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
hey sam i might be getting the hornby flying scotsman set for my birthday im not sure yet but it might happen
Really good review Sam. Definitely making me reconsider saving up for the Dapol 121.
Odd one out was the GWR railcar as it’s grouping era, and is different in a number of other ways too.
Thanks very much Fred - no doubt the Dapol version is better, but there's no way it'll be better value! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
And there was me thinking the unit in Southern region green was an Electric set...
This loco looks highly sprung and bang up to date ;)
haha, sure it is! ;D
A very nice DMU Sam!
Thank you Marco! :D
i just got a principals choice yard bull trainset, ho scale, would u mind doing a video on it if u can get ur hands on one. i just want a second opinion u know.
Oh very cool! I never heard of that brand before - but good luck with it, hope it's good!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
thank you
Awesome model! I wonder if they ever used rail cars to pull rolling stock sometimes?
Ryno Dynomyte it was common for them to pull a single wagon on branch lines (most often for milk churn collections)
Thanks for letting us know Allan - it's nice that they have couplings for that purpose then!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
oo that's a fantastic price, Hornby are really going back to there standards :), they are really nice, and I think the last one on the minaline finished last year maybe beginning of this year If I am correct the roof abouve the the cabs are white/creamy to try and stop the heat coming through the roof when its really sunny, haha its just the typical coach seating modling colour, I find the cheaper models run a lot better in slow speeds but let down more with there faster speeds, that is a great price, a great loco for young kids.
Thanks mate - I agree, such a good price for this! Ahh that makes sense about the roofs, I bet that's why! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Do a review of the Bachmann Paxton next week! Please! ;D
Good idea! I will have to try and get a Paxton! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Will there be a review of the Bachmann oo9 Baldwins
I don't have any 009 track unfortunately, otherwise I would!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Very nice, great price!
Thanks a lot mate - yeah fantastic price actually! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You have persuaded me to get one
Awesome Oli - hope you enjoy it as much as I do! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I have the Stourbridge dodger (same class)
Ooh that's cool!! :D
Is their Class 101 next? Hope so, and I also hope they return their railroad range Class 43, they did it once in Virgin livery and it sold very well, maybe they'll do one in more liviries? Just heard an HST horn from the ECML down the road aswell! Thats an interesting coincidence xD
Cheers mate! Might have to get one of these myself EVEN if they're completely out of era for me xD (ECML Chester-Le-Street)
Have a nice night :)
Ed.
Yeah that'd be great to see, and the HST too - that has to be one of their best selling models ever!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
nice I mite pick one up
That would be the perfect train that I use for Daisy
Yeah it would actually! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
With this model, hornby may pick up their game again!
Let's hope so - we need lots more like this!!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Whoa! I think I underestimated this model, it's more detailed than I thought.
KOOTPGB
I did too - it really is astonishing for less than £60!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That's amazing
Thanks a lot Justin! :D
Can you do a unboxing of the Daisy the diesel Railcar
Sadly I don't think anyone's made a Daisy!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
wait is that the diesel passenger train that daisy(thomas and freinds) is based of?
I think she was a 109 or something like that? I forget now!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
u doing any Thomas stuff m8 I like seeing those reminds me of me youth
Yeah I'll be doing more Thomas soon! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Small trivial error noted. There were 16 class 121s, and 10 trailer vehicles. You may have either accidentally included those 10 trailers in your count, or maybe the 10 class 122s which are slightly different to the 121.
Ahh duly noted - I apologise for that - thanks for pointing that out!
Cheers,
Sam :)
No problemo
How come the number on the front is different to the running number?
I was wondering that - I'm not sure! Maybe one is for the train, and the other for the specific unit??
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It would be a good basis for Daisy from thomas and friends.
It would actually! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
hi Sam!! Just a question, but does Hornby ship to the US?
Hey! I'm not absolutely sure - the best thing to do is contact them and ask! Also Hatton's do ship abroad - so it's worth contacting them to find out whether they ship to the US too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Buy it from Rails of Sheffield rather than Hornby direct.
but
hornby are running low on money to produce new moldings
Is this daisy from thomas and friends? Great video!
It looks a lot like her, but I think she's a 101! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The units were;
. 4sub?
. Derby lightweight unit
. Class 110?
. Class 109
. GWR Railcar
KOOTPGB
Very well spotted mate - yes I think that's the lot! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I carriage does that make it a diesel single unit or dsu
haha yeah - I think it's still a DMU, even though there's only one!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
This looks like the train that used to arrive at gretton station, look it up on Google
Ooh really? I will look that up - thanks for the comment!
Cheers,
Sam :)
