    Hi Sam
    Actually loco has two engines of 1350 bhp = 2700 bhp. Saw these being built at Swindon Works in 1961. Nice loco and model is good. Another good video Sam. Keep up the good work.

      Thanks for this Nigel - and that must be quite a valuable thing to remember - I bet there's not many who can say they saw these being built!

    I went to a local model train show last year and purchased the model at 17:00 for $20. It wasn't running and hadn't been serviced in years. Since I was just getting started in servicing my models I used it as a little test. It now runs near perfectly but it sort of tilts a little to the left and/or right going around curves. For the longest time I didn't know the classification of the model but now I do! I'm definitely going to check out the review for that model now. Another amazing review Sam! Keep up the great work. :D Also, in response to your question at the end of the video; I would probably not buy this model. If I am going to spend the little money I have I would want to spend it on a model that's high on quality, detail and performance. The quality of the model and the amount of separate detail you have to put on yourself just doesn't match the price for me, even when bought second hand. The model looks great but wouldn't make the cut for me.
    P.S. - I'm purchasing the N7 and Oxford Toad this weekend from Hatton's and I can't wait. Thanks for doing reviews on those models. Helped make my decisions easier.

      Thanks for that Sean - that sounds like a great buy, considering you were able to repair it! And that's fair enough - I do think there are better ways to spend money than on this!

    Sam. .Oh boy did I like these. I will never forget sneaking into Oxley (Wolverhampton) Locomotive Depot early in the very early sixties, nobody about and in front of me was Western Enterprise D10000 in Desert Sand just outshopped in prestine condition.
    These Locomotives were light for their size at 108 tons (contrast this with the brilliantly reliable Peaks at 133 tons with 2,500hp) , the two Maybachs produced 2,700 hp and boy could they pull. When they took over from the "Kings" Paddington - Birmingham Snow Hill they more than adequately did the job, hence the early loss of the Kings. The sound of the two Maybachs at full blast "music to my ears"! Excellent review as always.

    I’ve been looking at these for a future purchase for my layout. I didn’t realise that some shudder at a Heljan steam locomotive so I will tread carefully. A fair few extras to add to the model and detail it up. This looks a beautiful model but really surprised how secure that body is! Looks like a definite buy in the future for my layout. Clint

    Hi Sam,
    The Westerns were designed in Swindon (and built in Swindon and Crewe) to be more powerful, Co-Co versions of the German designed Warships, which often had to double head or be banked in the steep banks of Devon and Cornwall. Later in their life, some examples were fitted with dual-brakes (previously being vacuum only) to be able to be used on more trains. These dual-brakes versions were identified with a red cap on the brake pipes. The Maroon and Green Versions (also Western Champion which was Golden Ochre for a while) had the BR Coaching Stock Emblem rather than the Locomotive Emblem for some reason. If you (or anyone else) wants more information, feel free to ask.

    Great diesel review!🤩 I love the class 52s😍. You helped me make a decision of Heljan or Dapol. I went for Dapol. I bought a Dapol class 52 model from a uk train shop on eBay. Also Intercity82 made a review of a Dapol class 52 and they look nice. Their DC motors sound like they have DCC sound oe actual engine😄. Maybe you can do a comparison of the Dapol 52s and Heljan 52s like you did with the Terriers.😃

    Hello Sam. I just thought i go into your previous review of the Heljan class 52, because the other day i watched the Dapol class 52 review, the one where the locomotive had no numbers or names on the body because it was design clever allegedly . Or just lazy. To be honest i not impressed by this offering either. To much plastic with no screws to hold it together. But i found your review very interesting thank you. As i have said before i have an old Hornby 52 made in Margate.
    Keep up the fascinating very informative reviews 👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

    Hi Sam, thanks for this great review. Long ago I had a Class 52 from Heljan and one axle that was supposed to be powered was unpowered so in fact I had only 3 axles powered in total.
    There was something wrong with the gears so i did sent it back and got a replacement.
    Indeed my train guru had a big job to fit all the details and the NEM couplers were knocking off details as well.
    Later the paint on the nameplates started fading out and I had enough of it and Heljan all together.
    So I sold it through eBay.
    Being quite a fussy person I am far from impressed by its (lousy ?) build quality (body comes off just like that and the underframe and that large gap between body and underframe) and I'd certainly would give it a big miss.
    Agreed however that it certainly looks the part !
    Another point is the drive on four outer axles with the unpowered middle ones just dangling in between like a jojo. CHEAP !
    Why not simply power to all six axles like Bachmann does ??
    Or alternatively why not press these middle unpowered axles on to the track with a spring ?? Much nicer and better !
    I have a gorgeous German TRIX GG1 which also has only the four outer axles powered but the unpowered middle axles are neatly pressed on to the track with springs but ....... it is German of course.
    Because the GG1 is totally made of diecast metal it still has plenty of pulling power thanks to its big weight (almost 1 kilogram).
    Keep up the good work, Cheers, Jan

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 років тому +1

      Ahh sorry to hear that Jan - I'm not surprised though, given my experience with Heljan! I'm hoping Heljan will do better with more recent models - in this increasingly competitive hobby, there's no room for shoddy build quality!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    • @grootsan
      @grootsan 5 років тому

      @@SamsTrains Agreed Sam ! And of course being fussy doesn't make life easier ! I think the very best of British model trains is Bachmann.
      I have also been wary with Hornby for years (Hornby also starts with an "H" by the way :-) but I have made an exception last year September when they launched their new Class 87. I was pleasantly surprised of the nice detail and good quality ! I only had to bow out and made a handrail straight very carefully. And no missing or broken parts nor paint blemishes.
      They really did a good job with their Class 87. Equipped with Legomanbiffo sound I am very happy with it.
      I paid the equivalent of £262 from Amanda of AJM railways which included sound and postage to Australia. If you see and hear what I got for that amount of money I think it was worth every penny. Cheers, Jan

    Must admit most comments are very fair, some possibly not representative, 'though observed with yours - coupling for example.
    I have a 'rail blue' one, and have had a few minor issues, but otherwise the look and performance are superb.
    Fast, relatively quiet unless 'maxed out' (which you shouldn't do, nor do you need to do).
    Traction is superb. Speed is more than acceptable.
    Slow starts are not easy, 'though are possible. I think the flywheels must be large, creating a lot of inertia - possibly.
    I can get started and instantly slow a little - with practice it's not that obvious - to get a crawling start.
    Thanks for the review of one of my big favourites.
    I had a Dapol 52 - for 2 days. Had to return to seller for a failed PCB, which wasn't 'covered' by Dapol - not a recognised Dapol dealer - another story, but annoyed me. The Dapol cannot haul like the Heljan anyway.

    The design of the box reminds me of what Athearn's Genesis-series locomotives come in, but even those have a nice large drawing of the locomotive in the box on the side of it, but those are also designed to be "top of the line" (at least in terms of details), and most of the boxes I've seen here in the US have used a plastic window on the front to showcase the locomotive.

    I find the Heljan couplings to be a pain. I bought a Heljan Class 05 BR Green shunter diesel not too long ago. Beautiful runner, very smooth, nice detail... except that the coupling when plugged in at either end of the loco were so long to the sleepers that they were catching on every point the loco ran over, causing a derailment or just causing the loco to stop dead where it got caught. I had to clip a couple of milimetres off the bottom of the coupling arms to sort the issue.

    I did get a cab ride with Western Ranger on the Severn Valley Railway, a long time ago. I admitted it was different to riding round the carriages in the cab of a steam engine, although I didn't enjoy it as much. However....
    Sam's second hand Western Diesel was let down by the unsightly flimsy quality of chassis and body work. Sam had to be frustratingly careful with the model, as it had nearly caused a nasty accident on him.
    One day, Sam was a bit of a scaredy-cat. He was frightened to pick the model diesel up off the shelf where he'd put it, in case it fell apart as it had out of the box. Gingerly, he slid the diesel into both hands. The model was still in one could-fall-apart piece. He got as far as carefully placing the model on his track. This was where calamity took hold.
    "YIKES!" shrieked Sam in alarm. The diesel's wheels sat on the track perfectly well, but the minute Sam let it go, the model came apart completely. He carefully gathered up the pieces of the insolent box on wheels, and angrily discarded them in his wastepaper basket. He was annoyed with Heljan who didn't know any better, than to just clip the model together. However, he wasn't mad for long. Sonic the Hedgehog appeared out of nowhere and asked Sam what was wrong. Sam explained.
    "Steam engines are better built," Sonic pointed out. "They don't fall apart so easily." Sam saw his spiny friend had a good point.
    "Thanks, Sonic. I think I'll stick to steam engines from now on."
    "Don't buy a model that falls apart on you, Sonic Says," quoted the Hedgehog. He gave his signature wink and disappeared. Sam played with Steam Engines for the rest of his session. It was good to ask advice, and he knew it too well.

    Your experience with Heljin seems to be my overall experience with Bachmann as an Yank consumer. Overall for the price you could do worse, however most brands like Kato, Atlas, and Walther's seem to make better right out the box locos with DCC. The overall QA seems to be shoddy at best and are better off saving your pennies for the more pricey option. Good review and cheers!

    That clip issue is just crazy. My dapol 68 has just clips holding the body on however they are crazy secure and can hold a chassis about twice the weight of the bachmann 66! My 68 also has all the detail pre fitted however the coupling is pre fitted and cut down detail with a hole in the air dam on the rear is pre fitted so there is no issues with the coupling. The only thing with the 68 is that it has broken 3 couplings of my rolling stock when I had a derailment and the power of it just pulled them off.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 років тому

      Yeah I agree - it's nuts! Absolutely - if they use clips, they're usually almost impossible to get off - let alone dropping off accidentally - I think Heljan are trolls myself ;)

    I was able to score a practically new Dapol Class 52 here in the States from a US seller on eBay for the equivalent of £110 and I'm very impressed with the quality! I'd like to see a comparison with the Heljan.
    Something I found out about the Dapol Class 52 was that the pre-2019 release had some issues, like body screws that were too tight and detail inaccuracies. I noticed another commenter to this video preferred the Heljan to the Dapol & I wonder if they have the earlier version. The current version of the Dapol Western (like what I have) has a 21-pin decoder socket while the earlier versions have an 8-pin socket. Something to watch out for if you go hunting for one.

      It may also be worth looking at the other routes that have now moved on from the HST, Midland Main Line ; staring with the Midland Compound, Jubilee, class 45, and then the HST. On the East Coast, start with the C1, then the early A1 onto either the later A3 or A4, onto the deltic and again the HST. The HST has been with us a long time. I have always been a steam first person, but it can't be denied the HST has been an iconic train.

At least the Lima clip on body doesn't fall off even if the detail isn't up to the same standards, runs well enough though. I'm was also tempted to get a warship "Rapid" as well, funny enough that would have been a maroon one but a Lima model I believe.

    Sam, I think we need to revisit the ranking here. Detail is 4 stars? The light works but you can't see it, can't take a marker at the factory to blank out the axles, and the wheels are cast poorly. No details seen past the grills. 3 stars is generous. Performance is 4 stars. It won't crawl, it makes rubbing noises on curves, pulls out it's coupling, and you cannot stop it quick. Frankly, if a Bachmann did that would you give it a four? I think not. Mechanism you gave a four. The one newton is impressive but not if you can't use it. Quality is a 2 and I agree. Value is a four. I don't know because, like you, I don't know what the suggested price is and that's the one I go by. You got it for a good price. Looking at your list, I would rather have any engine below that Class 52. Do you feel the same when you look at this list?

    I think the dealer wasn’t entirely honest with you when bought that . I have Western Empress , the body is securely clipped on to the chassis and the there is no gap , the loco crawls and there is no problem with the couplings. It has a five pole motor and the instructions say it is capable of hauling fifteen coaches . All European manufacturers use clip fittings on the their locos . I would say your loco may have been dropped or the clips have been broken before you bought it . David

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 років тому

      Yeah that is very possible, but you can usually tell if a loco's been used or damaged due to the state of the gears,wheels and bodywork - but as I say, I've seen many others like this, and I've even had a few concurring comments too! I think inconsistency is the thing with Heljan - I've had a few where the couplings were fine, but also plenty with drooping couplings!

In poor condition, at the end of their working life. I agree with it being flimsy in build. They are ok, mine does. But I would like more build quality everything seems to fall off. I don't have the money for a loco so if I go to any train fairs I just buy rolling stock

      That sounds fair enough - I find it more exciting to buy new rolling stock anyway! :D

    I think I’ll stick to Hornby or Bachmann Branchline diesels when I get around to those. Heljan...it feels like I have a strange feeling they don’t care. With the Tango, that really had me lose my hopes in getting a Heljan loco. I can’t believe it’s sorta that poor, but at least it’s better than the tango.
    Wait, you said that have bulbs instead of LED? I’ve never heard of modern locos with ordinary bulbs before. I’m now curious to see how long those bulbs will last. You agree Sam? Lol
    And the body, how it comes off so easily, now that part scares me the most. I can’t imagine not running it for a while when you have a huge collection, and you forget about the quality and that happens. It’s like my Hornby Commonwealth of Australia, I had to repeat myself saying lift it loco first cause the loco and tender aren’t permanently connected. They’re permanently connected by the wires.
    Great review, nonetheless Sam. Keep up the good work bro. ;D

      Yeah I can see why you'd do that- Hornby/Bachmann are priced similarly, but they're much better quality! Yeah me too - very surprised to see bulbs! They should last okay, since they're only on low voltage - but they're nowhere near as bright or efficient as LEDs!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)
