I've never really been interested in electric locos, but this one changed my tune! The paintwork is beautiful. It reminds me of the Pennsylvania Railroad 's GG1 type, which were the same colors, but instead of the squared off lining, they had gold stripes down the length of the body.

I have just found this review, it is pretty accurate, i have lost the brake gear on one bogie, found it in pieces around the track. As for running it is superb. The carriages I use are from Hornbys Norfolk express blood and custard set and they look good behind the loco. Oh I have four of them of which 2 are Sarah Siddons. One in London transport and the other as preserved Met scheme as per you model. They used to pull six dreadnoughts as that was all that fitted on the shortest platforms then. The Met steam usually hauled 6 but often 4 or 5. Radley still do resin Dreadnoughts at an air sucking through the teeth price. I have several Harrow models white metal kits to build, maybe this coming winter. As i run a Met theme, also southern, i have some 57xx, E class to build, F class to build, an lner c13 as per Chesham shuttle’s also 41272 ivatt tank. I have most of the bachmann wagons and brake vans. I cannot remember what i paid for my locos but they are all well worth the price for the pleasure they have given me. The track is bare, I just visualise the scenery that they trundle through.
I have just motorised an efe tube set which really does not like my track, such is life.
I do enjoy your reviews Sam keep up the good work and thanks for you concise and dark humour.

She's a gorgeous little thing! I'm glad you got one.... Especially Sarah Siddons.
I might add though... The things you called vacuum pipes are actually air brake pipes (train and main res), with the locos having 2 sets (an upper set and lower set) per end, with the vacuum pipe tucked in beside the screw link coupling, at both ends.
    And on a diesel/electric loco, it's called a solebar, not a running board 😉😁
    Keep it up Mr Sam.

    • @SamsTrains

Thanks a lot Phil - glad you liked her!
Ahh my apologies - I thought they were all called vacuum pipes, I stand corrected!!

The coaches that remember these with were wood coloured, with compartments but no corridors. Like the rest of London Transport railways (except north from Rickmansworth), it ran on 4 rail track (2 running rails, one electric rail between the running rails, one outside).

Great video Sam , Sarah Siddons was an actress from the 1800’s . I’ve got two of these locos and they both run really well but yours could have been sitting that box for about six years before you got it .
My local station used to be Rickmansworth where until 1961 these locos used to bring the trains from London and would come off to be replaced by a Stanier or Fairburn 2-6-2 tank loco to take the train on to Aylesbury . The loco change was done in under four minutes the worlds fastest loco change . My grandfather worked in coal yard at the station and when I went to see him I would always see at least three of these electric loco waiting in the siding ready to take over from the steam loco to take the train on to Baker Street or Liverpool Street . I think these locos feature on one the Railway Roundabout DVD’s showing the loco change . David

Thanks a lot for the info on Sarah Siddons - much appreciated! That's true - I did give it some oil having seen her run badly, but just getting her run-in seemed to mitigate the problem!
Thanks for the interesting story - it's always fascinating to hear about railway history from different areas!! I'll have to look them up on Railway Roundabout!

About whistles - Most early Electric stock in this country used Whistles right up into the 1960s. London Underground still only use whistles rather than horns, even on the latest stock to be built. I think the only other place in Britain where whistles are currently the standard is on the Isle of Wight, which of course uses ex-London Transport 1938 Tube Stock. Quite a few modern EMUs do have whistles fitted for depot or yard use, but they're not the standard across the network (Obviously).
I think one of the reasons why whistles are preferred on LU metals and in depots/yards is that the sound carries differently to a horn. A horn, when one stands close to it, is incredibly loud and gradually gets quieter the further away you stand. I think this is something to do with the way the air is forced out of it, but I'm not a physicist so can't say for sure. A compressed air (or steam) whistle, much like a an organ pipe in many ways, is more tolerable to stand near, but the sound still carries for a large distance. I think this is particularly key in tunnels (Which, naturally, are quite frequent on some parts of the Underground!!!) where such a loud blast as produced by a horn would reverberate around the tunnels, which probably wouldn't be good. Someone would probably be able to correct me on this.
Sorry, really minor point in the video but having wondered about it myself for a long time I thought I'd share!
As for Met No.12, as far as I'm aware she's not strictly speaking preserved and still belongs to TfL. For many years she was officially a 'Brake Block Test Loco' which to me sounds like a wonderfully inventive excuse for maintaining a loco like this on the books long after withdrawal. Definitely superior to the modern stock on the Met, and makes a cracking noise too (Old electrics really are not quiet!!!). I've recently managed to acquire some appropriate 'Dreadnought' coaches for mine (courtesy of Ebay) but it'd be useful if someone produced these ready to run.

Superb review Sam. Perfect for my wartime livery. They took a lot of finding but I found and bought a pair for £107 each. Delighted with them and with their wheel configuration that handles my R1 and R0 track. Mine ran well straight from the box so I think you had very bad luck with yours. Looking forward to the Hatton genesis coaches (metropolitan livery). They should match very well.
Keep up the good work. Many thanks. J.T.

This locomotive is in Metropolitan Railway livery, not LT. Sarah Siddons was a welsh actress who made her name on the London stage during the late 18th & early 19th C.

Sarah Siddons never heard of here either. Who was she. She was a Welsh-born English actress born 5-7-1755! The elder sister of John Philip Kemble, Charles Kemble, Stephen Kemble, Ann Hatton and Elizabeth Whitlock and the aunt of Fanny Kemble. She was most famous for her portrayal of the Shakespearean character, Lady Macbeth, a character she made her own as well as for fainting at the sight of the Elgin Marbles in London. THEY NAME A LOCO AFTER HER INSANE OR WHAT!

Sarah Siddons was a Welsh-born actress born in 1755, dying in 1831. She was THE most famous actress in the 18th century, playing on Broadway in New York (there were no films in 1800) and was the first actress to become a millionaire, yes a millionaire around 1800! That must be close to being a billionaire, or more, now.

I hope someone does a soundset for this loco, as I cannot get enough of the whistles, air compressor chugging, and gear noises that the real life things make. It'd be an excellent addition to these locos. I've also seen some people fit small LED lights under those white 3rd rail fuses to simulate arcing!

Sarah Siddons was an actress. The locomotives were built in 1922, supposedly a rebuild of locos built in 1906 and 1910. No 12 is the only one running and was converted to for BR third rail and made excursions over the national system, including a visit to Brighton, in the 1980s.

    Hi Sam,
You might be interested to know that Hattons have Sarah (in current preserved livery) on special again for £69, with other variations from only £64.
I ordered Sarah on Boxing Day, and living in Australia did not have to pay VAT, so that more than covered cost of airmail postage to Australia!
I also ordered the Heljan EM2 "Diana" which is also on sale for £109. That means I "might" have to pay Australian GST when they arrive here, but that is only 10% c/w VAT @ 20%, so I'll still be in front.
    :-)
I'll let you know if I do have to pay GST when it arrives, because other Australian subscribers might be interested - our laws on importing stuff valued at under A$1000 changed back in July.

@@SamsTrains Hi again Sam. Just letting you know that both "Sarah" and "Diana" arrived safely today. (For other Australians - I did NOT have to pay GST when I collected them).
I was particularly impressed with Hatton's packaging. Many retailers simply shove products into a flimsy plastic satchel and hope for the best. Australia Post then do their best to destroy them.
If you read this in time, please pass on my sincere appreciation to the folks from Hattons when you see them later today. Heh, I last ordered from them in the 1970s! I'll probably not be able to join you in the live stream - it'll be 2am here. ;-)
Thanks also to yourself for your excellent genuine reviews.

I find it ironic how they made an awful engine before, yet it feels like they watched that video of you reviewing it and are like: “we gotta fix our mistakes on this next engine”. Idk it’s just funny to me how they just had a change of wind for this engine.
Still, good work on reviewing the engine Sam!

That was a lot of fun to see. I do like the Metropolitan Electric. Since you mentioned Hatton's, did you hear they're coming out with a rail gun? That might be fun to look at, though it might scare Bullman! Also, I still feel sorry for the O2. I really like the class, and to not do them justice in such a way is so unfair. Hope it's fate is merciful, though I know my idea #SavetheO2 #o2Project rebuild was a little far fetched. Good video as always Sam. :)

Hi Sam, they are very interesting. I really wanted the one named 'Sherlock Holmes' but sadly Heljan only made a few and they sell at mad prices. I wonder how this runs on smooth DC control? I heard a few others found PWM did not bring out the best performance. Great video. Sarah Siddons was a Welsh-born English actress, the best-known tragedienne of the 18th century

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 років тому +1

Hey Mike! Ahh sorry to hear that - Hatton's do still have a select few on sale, though I'm not too sure which - link in the description if you're interested!
I did run this in using my bench power supply initially, which does have the smoothed output - the performance was much the same on there, but it's slightly better now that it's clocked up a few hours running!

Nice to see a very different loco Sam, looks lovely. I do think you’re being unnecessarily harsh re the O2, it looks like a relatively isolated quality issue. It would be good to follow any response Heljan give if you let them know.
This looks lovely. I’d say “pair of couplings” ;), and I think solebar is the word you were searching for to describe the frames. I’ve never considered getting one until this review, it may be gushing but it looks justified. It might have to go on the wish list. Shame about the running, the Heljan diesel/electric chassis are usually excellent (except for the early class 17s)
On your next Thomas video could you give a shout out to my boy please? He’s 3, his name is Sebastian and he loves watching Sams Trains.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 років тому

Thanks a lot James - I agree that some of the issues with the O2 could have been a one-off, but the poor quality mechanism, unrealistic finish, and unacceptable list price are pretty consistent!
haha pair of couplings sounds much better - lol! Ahh yes - I'll need to remember the term solebar!
I can definitely do shout-outs on the next series of live streams - I'll put him down! :D
