    This Setting is Ruining Your PC - Gsync/Freesync & FPS Caps
    Over 90% of you watching right now are almost certainly using settings that either make your display look way worse, massively increase your latency, or both… Let’s talk about it
    Now, before we get into this trust me favorite this video right now, because believe me you’re going to want to come back to this one time and time again as this video is my magnum opus of the over a year of latency and motion testing I’ve been doing on dozens of displays using both Nvidia and AMD GPUs with a 1000fps camera, and what I’ve found is going to shock you, as it turns out when set up correctly you can actually have far lower latency and a better image in motion all while using less PC resources.
    How, well it all has to do with sending the fastest, most up to date frame your PC can produce without tearing, and unfortunately the default settings for GPUs and games don’t allow this to happen, and most advice on settings people give is also incorrect.
    Now this journey all started with me testing various fps caps and Nvidia control panel settings, and what I found was that yes the old adage of Vsync adding tremendous latency in games was true, however at the time I also found that Gsyc+Vsync in the Nvidia control panel +Reflex in game could actually lead to far less input delay on many games and in fact was overall better than using an external cap in the driver or Riva Tuner Statistics Server to set a global limit.
    Not only that, but you would also get a tear free experience using these settings and it could actually be even faster than no fps cap as when you are heavily GPU bound this can actually increase latency.
    However, viewers then pointed out that external caps can have higher latency than in game caps, so I went to investigate this claim now using an AMD GPU and I found that they were actually correct. In-game caps led to far lower latency than any other method.
    However I still hadn’t had a chance to revisit this on Nvidia GPUs to see if this is actually better than Gsync+Vsync+Reflex, so I recently did just that.
    Now for these tests I ran 3 different configurations on a 138Hz OLED monitor.
    Gsync+Vsync+ULLM
    Gsync+Vsync+Reflex
    Gsync+Vsync+133fps cap
    Gsync+120fps cap as in my testing it turns out that VRR used in Gsync and Freesync monitors actually needs 1ms of time to fully work.
    What I mean by this is for you to get 0 perceivable tearing you must add an additional ms of latency to give the display more time to process.
    This is done by first getting the latency of your monitor which for me as an example would be to take 1000ms / 138fps to get 7.246ms of total latency.
    You then add 1ms to this number which would give us 8.246ms of total latency, and to understand what frame rate that is, we simply take 1000ms again / this new latency which gives us 121.27fps, however I then round down to the nearest even number to give it a little headroom, which means that actually the max framerate we can run on a 138Hz display is 120fps.
    Other common refresh rates would look like this
    240Hz = 192fps
    144Hz = 124fps
    120Hz = 106fps
    When I was testing AMD GPUs I found that If you don’t do this you will likely see slight tears at the bottom of your screen which can make the display look weird and throw you off when you're playing a competitive game.
    However on an Nvidia GPU I found that if you combine Gsync+Vsync you actually only need to add 0.3ms of latency for VRR to work correctly
    240Hz = 223fps
    144Hz = 138fps
    120Hz = 115fps
    so in theory unless AMD can also do the same thing, Nvidia may be able to deliver higher untorn framerates, but that’s only if the latency is still good, so let’s find out.

      This actually does work. If I follow the traditional way of capping 3 fps under my refresh rate with no vsync, I get tearing at the bottom of my screen. If I follow this calculation and cap lower, the tearing is gone, even with vsync off. Of course, you could just cap a few below with vsync on and not have that issue, but some games don't work properly/stutter with vsync enabled at all (even with fps cap), so this is a good backup option.

    With GSync + VSync + Reflex (with Nvidiacard) do I need to do the 0.3ms ingame cap as well, or is that only without Reflex?

      vsync with no framecap is the smoothest you can get but the information on screen is old, so it can make the game feel laggy. Yes use all three, but you need a framecap well below the refresh rate, in game framecaps usually best, but that depends on the game. Turn reflex off if you are cpu bottlenecked, or if it crashes the game.

    So to get the best performance I should turn on vsync in the nvidia control panel, make sure vrr is on, and cap my framerate to 115fps on my 120hz monitor in game settings? Also in the game select vsync in the options when I cap the fps? Also, in the control panel there is a cap frame rate option. Can you just cap it there and will it do the same thing? This WILL cap the framerate automatically (and ensure latency is the lowest with G-sync) and is the best way except for Reflex. AND GUESS what dumb, dumb, Nvidia programed it so if Reflex is enabled then Low Latency Mode to ULTRA is preempted by the Reflex implementation.
      The latest Nvidia driver JUST made it so Low Latency Mode to ULTRA will now work on DX12 games. If it was a SHIT mode they would not do this. They did this because NOT all DX12 games have implementations of Reflex and LM to ULTRA is considered that implementation within the driver.

      the gain of AB+RTSS vs in game cap is usually very small tho.

    A month ago I got a asus tuff 170hz 1440 ips panel
    Two days a new gpu rtx 4080 with a i9 12900k
    From my old gpu (3070ti) in my nvidia Control panel I turned low latency mode(ON) not (ULTRA)
    In games I always ran ULLM
    no vsync or g sync or free sync
    Not until the day before I got my 4080 because I noticed when call of duty dropped fps down to 135-140 I seen it was choppy I turned on Free sync only and
    I capped my fps at 168
    Any recommendations or settings for the smoothest well balanced gameplay over all? The only game I play that I care for with the competive edge is mw3 and warzone
    Also is it safe running the over clocked 170hz mode on my monitor , it was advertised as that but came 144hz just asking out of curiosity lol. Or should I just upgrade to a 240hz

      i have almost same monitor i think (VG27) and i still use 3070ti with a 13700k. plus i play warzone and i hate input delay!
      it is perfectly fine to run it 170hz. it is its advertised speed. just like RAM overclocking with XMP. and it is worth it! i do notice faster frames than 144. beware you might be color limited due to display port bandwidth limit.
      when on 170hz make sure to put in and check regularly if things look weird because windows messes with it on the random....
      nvidia control panel>change resolution tab
      170Hz
      color depth - highest(32bit) - 8 bpc
      Format - RGB - FULL
      i do not use frame caps or ullm but im always gpu bound...
      i think as said in video best is default drivers settings (concerning latency) with gsync+vsync+reflex. with the latter very well implemented in COD. but things change a bit if you reach your fps cap and are no longer gpu bound... then if i understand correct you want to cap this 1ms below the vsync limit. which if i understood correctly would be 240hz=192fps, 144=124, 120 = 106 then for ours 170hz it would be cap on 158 fps. best method to cap frames is MSI afterburner+RTSS. or Asus their equivalent software GPU Tweak.
      i think you can gain more fiddling with windows... Message signal interupt(MSI- not the brand) settings , DPC latency fixes, altho nvidia did a lot recently so idk which are still needed. mouse related windows issues and things like resolution timer (resolution timer has changed in win11, do mind)

    I just assumed if u changed the settings in Nvidia Control Panel, the settings in game would reflect the same. But that doesnt seem to be the case.

      @@Rogers88 you dont have to worry about the low latency mode, as reflex mode overwrites this setting.

      Go in Nvidia Control Panel, and Enable, G-sync, V-sync, and then IN GAME enable Reflex. (both counter-strike and fortnite have this setting) DO NOT do Reflex+Boost, unless you have a super high end PC.

I used to have a 60hz display and I never saw screen tearing from games running above the monitor refresh rate (I only saw screen tearing if the fps was lower) and even on that 60hz display the higher the frame rate the smoother it felt. Same setup as you. Ik it’s late but,
      1) gsync + vsync ON in Nvidia control panel
      2) make sure to turn OFF all vsync in the In game settings (vsync should be on only in the control panel)
      3) you do not need both reflex and an in game cap. Use on or the other. If reflex is available, put it on. If reflex is not, use an fps cap (I do 141)

    I do have 165Hz montitor but I put it on 144Hz and I capped my fps on 142 fps while using Gsync and NVIDIA reflex and I never had any issues.

    You did a lot of research, but your explanations were all over the place. Suggestion: Give a scenario/then what's the best setting. eg. 240 HZ monitor with GSYNC- set frame cap to ..... turn on Gysnc, reflex, etc.

    You don't need to enable VSYNC to use ULL. Not sure why it wasn't tested with it off. Fps matters and that's missing from these results. Also missing is one other config for smooth input and frame times....

    I am really confused.
    Most of the game I am playing is not having reflex implmented in them.
    so would not running low latency mode from Nnivida control panel would result in lower latency?
    gsync + vsycn + in game cap + low latency mode should result in the lowest latency say compared to
    gsync + vsync + in game cap + no latency mode

      just use the latency overlay from geforce exp and test for yourself...it's literally system/game specific at this point for pc users...i'm a mainly controller, non-sweaty nerd gamer so as long as i'm under 60ms i'm perfectly content!

      What's even more confusing is when people talk about v-sync, they don't tell you which v-sync to turn off/on, the global v-sync in the control panel, or the setting in the game. Even though v-sync is a global setting, that setting is different from the one in game settings. Ugh. I've experimented over the years because all the instructions I've read online are so convoluted, so came to the conclusion that if you have a g-sync monitor, then you should turn v-sync on in the control panel but always turn it off in game settings (because you'll be adding an additional buffer causing more latency)

    Radeon software does allow you use both settings together, this had been an option for years ! I don’t think many people know about it though I always tune my settings this way whenever make a system

      Partially true. It's an option NOW, but v sync in the radeon control panel for the longest time only worked in open gl games, so you had to use the in-game v sync option (not optimal because of varying implementations/buffers) for any game that wasn't open gl. V sync in the radeon control panel has only started working for all games (regardless of api) sometime within the last year or so. Not sure what specific update did it, but at some point the open gl limitation was fixed.

    SO the tl;dw is turn off low latency mode, set a fixed frame cap slightly below refresh rate with GSync ON, and VSync ON?
    I missed where you say where to set Vsync, in game? in driver Vsync FAST or ON?
    What if the specific game's in-game frame cap is known to be dogshit? THEN set it via RTSS?
    Next time put up a chart so we can reference it instead of having to replay the 10 minute video over and over and over again trying to figure out what the hell you mean.
    Be specific about which settings you're setting where, and why.

    my problem is not here
    can somebody tell me why it shuts down when i select resolution from 1080p to 4k in last of us and
    VRAM goes to 9/8gb, my card has 8gb, 5700xt.
    as soon as i click accept settings
    it shuts down
    i heard that going over vram limit is safe 😥
    what could be making system crash. Windows uses RAM not VRAM right?

    It is incorrect to say that it only makes sense to let your game rip to 1k fps only if your GPU is then at 50%. What you want for best latency is to be on the verge of being GPU bound. Source: latest GamersNexus video on the topic with an nVidia engineer.

    Can I just cap my fps at 237 and turn ultra low latecncy mode in ncp? Without gsync and v sync.
