Hopefully you have room in your heart for sick people who did the right things in life, were kind, generous, forging.... but still had or has to suffer crappy illness.
Best way to avoid addiction? Just never start. So few people have long lives when they choose heroin as BFF.

    • @loveinspired7

Amy Lynn Hunt ALL of us will go through pain and suffering at some point in our lives...we wouldn't be human if we didn't.
I know FIRSTHAND the horrors of addiction, and I agree with you 100% that the BEST defense would be to NEVER touch the stuff at all!
I wish she had more time to get herself together...I wish that ALL who succumbed from drugs had more time to straighten their lives out, but no matter how much time they may have been given, it never would have mattered if they didn't TRULY DESIRE to get clean and STAY clean.
Their deaths, still serves a purpose, however... it is a constant reminder that I could end up dead just like them!
      Our "desires" FEED our "will"...

When I discovered Gia at 10 years old I immediately fell in love. I did a research project on her in High School. I didn’t have many queer role models and Gia was openly interested in women from the age of 13. I once had a girlfriend named Hilary who was also obsessed with Gia. We both found her grave in bucks county back in 2008 and left yellow roses (Gia’s favorite) Gia also became an addict and so did I. Now I’m almost 10 years sober off drugs and alcohol and in school for film. As a filmmaker and a queer sober person, through my creativity and work in the recovery community I hope to honor her and Hilary’s memory (unfortunately, she passed at age 37 in Dec 2021)

Sooo many people commenting about helping an addict. Only because of her pretty face and celebrity status. Im willing to bet you never helped an addict on the street. Addiction is something the general public doesn't understand or want to understand. Recovery is only successful when the addict wants it and does the hard work ALONE . YOU HAVE TO BE STRONG AND ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS AND WORK AT IT . nobody should help you thats enabeling . Us addicts are master manipulators. I am in recovery 18 yrs its possible to recover.

I've been sober off drugs and alcohol for over 4 years but I struggled for many years. I was in and out of jail and rehab for over 6 years, and the only thing I can tell you is that no one can stop an addict until they want to quit on their own. Sadly, many addicts don't get sober until things get really bad or they end up like Gia. I've lost so many people to this disease, and the Fentanyl just makes it 100x times worse with overdose deaths. It is a real epidemic that not many people talk about and it's very sad.

I met Gia a few times back in the late 70's, Nothing serious though. She was even prettier in person, some days she would hang around in the Art studios I would have coffee at. Some days she would be very nice and bubbly, other days she wouldn't be very nice at all and scream at people, then storm out of the building and disappear for hours, sometimes days. I didn't even know she died until 1990! She was everywhere it seemed, then one day...just nothing. like she never even existed. Sad.

Rachel Christensen -- It's just one of those outlandish conspiracy theories. Its not even worth giving any credence towards. Gia's life went precisely as is commonly believed. She made it big and then disappeared from the scene as her psychological issues pushed her towards heroin to numb the emotional pain. The heroin addiction and mental illness she suffered from had a great toll on her. She sadly caught HIV as a result of injecting heroin with a needle that was already used by someone else and that person that used it had HIV. With the help of a group of recovering heroin addicts that she met in rehab, she managed to get clean and quit heroin but then found out she had HIV. Nobody, not even family, wanted to take her in and she was treated like she had leprosy. This was because HIV was not truly understood in the 80's so some thought you could catch it by just being near them. Friends from rehab gave her a safe place to stay and took great care of her until her sickness got the point where she had to be hospitalized. She lived her remaining short time on earth in hospital with regular visits from her family and rehab friends who she said herself were the only true friends in life that she had known.

Judging by the autobiographical movie of her life, her mother seems like a narcissist. Children of narcissists carry enormous trauma that can be complex, and difficult to even verbalize. On the one hand, they learned to mirror and copy the narcissism in order to survive… but on the other hand they were abused by it. Often times children of narcissists end up having Borderline PD- many have strong traits of narcissism themselves which as I stated was a coping mechanism- although it doesn’t excuse the abusive nature of it. I feel like modeling was the perfect storm for this all to manifest in the worst way for her, and then she understandably turned to addiction to cope and comfort herself. Overall a very sad story, but important to remember that this is happening to countless people across the world who nobody knows about.

She contracted AIDS from sharing needles, not being bisexual. I swear, people know nothing but just announce it like it is fact.
Gia was one of the first women in the public eye to die due to."complications stemming from AIDS", there was no help then and her death was awful. Doctors and nurses wore "space suits" when they actually deigned to check on her in the crappy state-run (IIRC) hospital.

Amy Lynn Hunt I know she probably contracted AIDS from needles. There's no argument here honey. In the 70's, people weren't aware of what can happen with sharing the drug paraphernalia. I read Stephen Fried's book. Plus, she is not bisexual. She identified as gay. Sure, she probably had sex with men for money when she got so desperate to get another fix or had been sexually taken advantage of unconsciously when she was in the shooting galleries but her heart was exclusively for women.

It's strange to think that 32 years ago today was Gia's last day on this planet. 32 years... Where the hell does time go? I was born a few months before her, and I can remember just how confusing that time was. The 70's were bizarre to say the least. I also worked in what I suppose you could call an 'unreal' industry at exactly the same time as she was modelling, and I know just how easy it was to be seduced by things that one should have steered clear of. I became a drunk, I was never rich enough to be an alcoholic. With Gia it was drugs and a dirty needle. With me it was a wake up call at about the same time as she was breathing her last. So I lived and she died. Who decides which way the coin lands? Gia fascinates me though and I don't know why. I wish that I could have met her and influenced her, but that's romantic nonsense because at the time I would have probably been just as off my face as she was. They were strange days indeed! I hope that if there is an afterlife that she's found peace, and even though I never did meet her I always hold a small part of her in my heart. No one, no matter how haunted by demons they are deserves to die so young and in such a hideous way, especially when they have the world at their feet. RIP Gia. You are missed.x

If this was filmed in 82, then it was when she was desperately trying to make a come back in modeling. By 1980 her career was in steep decline and by 1981 she moved back to Philadelphia to live with her mother. Her come back never materialized because as you can see here, she was still heavily into drugs. Sadly by 83/84 she was flat broke and began working odd jobs in clothing stores, as a checkout clerk and even worked in the cafeteria of a nursing home. Despite various attempts to quit drugs during this time, they all failed. In June 1986 she was diagnosed with AIDS and by November of that same year had passed away of AIDS-related complications. She was only 26 years old.

Wow. Lots of interesting details I wouldn't have guessed. Her drug counselor believed she really had bipolar disorder. There was some questions as to whether her father molested her (in a documentary on her life). She was also described as being "a greedy bitch" when it came to taking heroin, and other junkies were surprised at how much she'd take - no doubt, might have been self medicating. Her girlfriend, Sandy Linter, claimed that she didn't like her beauty and she was said to have thought modeling to be bull shit (coudn't have helped being gay/non-feminine especially during this era). An above post said that she liked to wear men's clothes and no make up . Some described her as almost being like a brooding James Dean and with a lot of presence.

I know when I was drinking. I made a choice if i wanted to pick up the bottle or not to. One day I prayed and asked God to help me stop and God answered my prayers and literally the next day I stopped. And its not a simple as choosing to stop its hard I didnt just make the descision to stop and then I stopped, I still fight the urge to use drygs every day and probabky will for the rest of my life. When I first went into drugs I was very uneducated on their effect and what they could do to a person. So yes I had a choice but I didnt know what I was getting themselves into. If you find co fort in god thats good for you but I personally think thats a load of shit, there is no god if there was the terrible things in the world wouldnt happen, if you we able to just wake up one day and easily stop drinking then im sorry but you were not addicted. The way you talk shows you have no clue about addiction what so ever Nai, if you spent a year or more truely addicted to drugs or alcohol then you would understand everything im saying. I take responsibility for my actions, I was an idiot to ever get into all that but if it was as easy as to ask god for help and stop the next day do you really think the world would have addiction problems like it does? I can't see how you could have any kind of normal in that kind of world 😕

You get that from one clip where she's high? She wasn't very bright, and her looks were all she had going for her. The realisation of that is likely what drove her to use. She was never going to have a real job or career like Scavullo did.
She also "acted" very working class even though her family had money, and carried a knife in her pocket (to harm or threaten people?). It's funny how she hated modelling cause of how fake it all was, but her whole persona was inauthentic. She puts on a completely different voice in that TV interview, I assume that was her real voice and this "tough chick" voice is fake.
There are so many addicts on the street who people wouldn't even look at. They probably make fun of the "crazy crack heads" they encounter, but you have sympathy for Gia just cause she was attractive. That's really sad.

We are all entitled to our opinions, but some of these are pretty harsh judgements. I think Gia was so beautiful. She also had instability in her early life, and then shot to worldwide fame when she was still just a teenager. That's a lot to deal with. We all have our issues, and we don't always choose the best ways to deal with difficult feelings - hopelessness, fear, anxiety, depression - some of us turn to drugs. Why are celebrities expected to be any different? They're not invincible - they're human beings. I'm sure had Gia lived past 26 (because that is still so young) she would have continued to mature, grow, and learn to deal with her issues. She never had that chance. I'm not judging her at all. I'm 29, and still figuring myself out.

The problem with addiction is that it could be avoided if it was never started. Not everyone has an addictive personality, but one should know oneself and live to take care of oneself. People have worse problems and never get into deep trouble as this young girl did. It should be a lesson to others. And....don't blame everyone else for your problems but look inside and use your head!!!!!

Gia is an example that you need to help people when you see something wrong, or if they struggle. Her agents just cared about how hard she worked and looking beautiful. It seems she could easily have been saved if someone did something earlier on. Gia had so much life ahead and the people who didnt help her, killed her...she felt alone, and had so much on her plan..she was so young..she just needed an extra hand like she wanted..she did try give signs. She wasnt completely gone..she knew. Gia will always be an example that if you cant help that person, than try get someone to help your friend..you cant just leave me...if everyon never helped anyone..the world be fucked up. Dont give up.

Gia went to Abraham Lincoln High School in Philadelphia in the mid 70's. She was about 6 months older than me. I went to school with her, as did about 4000 other students. We just called the school Lincoln. At that time the schools were loaded with what we called "Bowie Freaks." A lot of the girls tried to emulate David Bowie's, at that time, androgynous look. Lincoln High School had "Ramps," rather than steps in the main hall. Everyone hung out at the ramps and used them to change classes. It was impossible to have gone to LHS at that time and not have passed Gia. I'd be willing to bet that most never even realized the connection.

    • @mesapysch
      @mesapysch 2 роки тому +9

I started Lincoln in 78 so I just missed her. I believe my freshman class brought the 4000 up to 6000. It was a coincidence that I ended up being a magazine fashion photographer. Although I worked with her agencies, I never worked with her. Her short career ended as mine was taking off in Philly with a year overlap. I remember the Bowie girls. Lincoln was razed a few years ago because it was just too big and old. The ramps were there because the school could be turned into an emergency hospital if there ever was a catastrophe. We used to grow weed in the school's greenhouse but that's another story.
