It’s THE perfect sequel. It doesn’t feel sloppy, or like an attempt to make a franchise. It’s just a solid film made for the fans, and acts as a love letter to Scott’s original.

I agree. The only thing that's off putting in this movie is Deckard's appearance and role. I feel like Villeneuve was pressured by the studio to put Deckard in the movie, so they could have Harrison play in the movie, and have his face plastered on every poster, even though his role in the movie wasn't that big. And tbf, it's not that the role was bad, or the performance or anything. I guess its just a testament to Villeneuve's directing abilities

K started the movie as an ordinary replicant who was designed to obey.
He then goes through the movie thinking that he may be the chosen one. And then, the rug is yanked from under him and it turns out he's not the chosen one. He really was just an ordinary replicant. He still didn't let that stop him from stopping the bad guys and saving the day.
K ends the movie as an extraordinary replicant who made his own choice. To me, I think that's all he ever wanted to be.

In the end all we have with us is our choices. They make us who we are and in turn who we are determines what we choose.
Replicant or Human we come into this world with nothing and when we die we take only our deeds both good and ill.
The moral of the Blade Runner movies, for me anyway, is that you can't wait to begin living your life. You just have to live it.
So many people wait for it. Wait to have money, wait to have a house, wait to have a car. They wait and wait and wait. Some even wait for the afterlife to have a fulfilling experience.
Our time is limited. We cannot get back the years we spent waiting. Now is all that we have, now is the most important moment and you must make it a moment that you can be happy with.
Because when it's all over and we go our memory will eventually fade. Even the snow melts and washes away.

@@TheFloorface I can see where you are coming from, but I have to disagree. To me, the villain was not the central part of the film, and their motives were ultimately superficial. The villain's purpose was to act as the mere catalyst by which K could surmount his internal conflict; that being the humanity of the replicants, and knowing that his choices - though leading to his death - would give someone else a worthful life, and in the meantime ascend him to the status of a human. I thought it was such a courageous and well executed direction to take the sequel.

@@TheFloorface Aside from the fact I disagree with you, which is fine, you're mistaken about Deckard being confirmed to be a human. They never say one way or another what he is by the end of 2049 (although there are clues, contrary to what you said, that Deckard is in fact a replicant- such as Gaff saying that there was "something in his eyes".)

His own is not the best, but he surely made it count, he's been used time and time again, but in the end...
He finally chose for himself, the memory may not be him, but the emotion is every bit pure.
He shared a heartfelt moment with Deckard, that warranted his place as Ana's brother in my book, the little scene they shared had that chemistry upon rewatch.
They're family, not by blood, nor plot, simply by emotional bond, attachment.

Do you want to know why Denis is an absolute beast of a director? Because where others chose to show not tell, he decided not to show as well. Instead he let you listen. Those notes you hear will forever be bound to Rutger Hauer’s brilliant monologue. A monologue which cannot and will not be surpassed. That’s why Denis doesn’t even try, instead he lets your brains editing software put it together and we as an audience know exactly what is going through K’s mind without him uttering a single word or even having an expressive performance. I’m sure somewhere down the line the Mandela effect will leave people convinced that K also said “tears in the rain” and that is directing way beyond camera placement and actor performances. Denis is simply on another level.

Some people say that the original had a grittiness and dirtiness to it while the new one looks so clean even with the dust. I think this scene captures the difference between the original and the sequel perfectly. The 2049-look seems more pretty and organized. Still the environment feels way more oppressive in the sequel because you can't hide your tears in the rain anymore, it's snowing; and snow is more beautiful than rain but harsher and much much colder. The beauty of snow hides its oppressiveness, like corporations and JOI seem more beautiful than ever now, but their beauty is only a facade. That is why the clean look of this movie works, because its meant to be deceptive.

The first time I watched it, I marveled at how every pronounced feature of this film, the stage design, the costume design, the music, the art direction, everything, nodded to the original but changed it somehow. The cinematography was excellent but not the same, the imagery was excellent but not the same. The plot was excellent, but not the same. The message was similar, but not the same. A superior work!

My brother saw this film first before watching the original because he didn’t even know their was a previous film, and he actually disliked the original because he felt the sequel was a superior improvement over the classic. He even came up to me and said “This film doesn’t look or feel like a sequel, it feels like it’s own film.”

a great moment that parallels the original in multiple ways, excellent cinematography and acting, although id argue that the seawall fight or the "you look lonely" are more powerful and a better contender for the original tears in the rain scene than this one

    • @88feji
      @88feji 3 роки тому +4

I don't think simply pointing your camera at big empty locations equals "excellent cinematography", its too easy and lazy what 2049 did. Water fight is empty of any details or background (no seawall is even visible, no sky, just almost totally dark water) ... the Las Vegas streets does not have any road signs, street lamps, abandoned vehicles, no trashes, no dangling wires at all ?? Really ? It just looks like they are too lazy to make it look like a deserted Las Vegas, they just put some statues so it must be Las Vegas ? What a big fat joke is that ?
The casino lounge is just a lounge like any we see in most places today, just with more light shows ... I bet Madonna's big concert at the height of her fame in the past has more better light shows than that ...
Seriously the giant hologram scene plus the rooftop scene in the rain are maybe the only few scenes that looks beautiful atmospherically in the movie, the rest really feels hollow, too smooth, too lacking in any contextural descriptive details to be meaningfully beautiful ...
Of course a lot of people are easily wowed by shots of big empty locations, but the artistic efforts involved in making such scenes are so minimal ... compare that the the rich culutral details, the mind boggling designs in the first movie, the sequel really feels hollow and lazy ... you should watch the making of documentary for the first Blade Runner, it will blow your mind the artistry involved in things like painting the megabuildings backgrounds, the all sorts of little meaningful details they jam into each and every single frame of the movie ..

      "a hero who doesn't matter"
That is the beauty of this movie. K gets nothing but a short life and zero recognition--but he gets closure knowing that he did something good for someone. He never mattered at all to anyone, until his final act. The brief little smile he shows right before this is probably the most moving emotion the audience ever sees... And it is moving.

I love the use of tears in the rain here when you watch back on Roy’s speech, the defining moment where their humanity shone through in both of their last breaths taken, proving they were more human than human. I also love how in the original it was rain and in 2049 it’s snow… maybe a comparison to be made is the difference in replicant demonstrated through the different precipitation’s either way when both lined up together and this song plays both are spectacular (obviously Roy’s speech is more iconic and definitely more emotional) I just love the respect Dennis had for the material to such he finished his own piece in line with the original

I saw bladerunner in IMAX one of the best experiances I've had with a movie, this movie is meant to be played loud, the gunshots and brutal moments, the deafening sounds of machines and vehicles, the overwhelming hum of the city's occupants, the insanity of the tests they did on replicants, these were all counteracted with the quiet moments just like this, it really gave you an insight into his mental struggles.
All the horrible moments in life are loud and brutal, and all the beautiful moments are quiet.

Loved this film. Especially since in a big way K actually is still a 'Chosen One' even though he wasn't Rachel's child, since he was able to disobey and deviate from his baseline even though he was part of the new line of replicants that the opening scroll states definitively to be obedient. Was K the first of the new generation to rebel? That seems almost as startling and compelling a fact as the realization that Wallace's replicants could bear children.
And he didn't even have to 'see a miracle' like the first replicant says. K just had to see the hope of a miracle to be free.

K is able to feel the snow (which is by the way frozen rain, calling back to the Tears in Rain ending of the original but this time in a more serene and content way) while the “chosen one” has never known the feeling of snow on her skin. He may be synthetic, but he has the experience of life that Deckard’s daughter never had. And yet she is seen as more valuable to the Replicant revolt simply because she is unordinary. Such an incredible message, and the perfect way to make a sequel. It should be considered one of the best films of the 21st century, and one of the best science-fiction films ever. Villeneuve and the scriptwriters are geniuses.
