The totem was shaking at the end and was about to fall. Watch the end just before the credits scene comes up. And it is now confirmed. Also, even if it was a dream, the totem would spin forever. So anyway Cobb would see it spinning non stop when he walks across the house again. And kills himself to continue the task.

What’s interesting about those 2 movies is that Interstellar is a father and daughter movie and this is a father and son movie. Except with Interstellar they use the main character (Cooper) to do it. With Inception they use a more minor character (Fischer) to show this relationship.

Inception's plot is actually straight-forward and doesn't "lie" about when they are dreaming vs. the real world. What's brilliant about it is it incepts the idea that he isn't in reality at the end (even though he is), by planting the seed of the idea with the spinning top, JUST AS COBB DID WITH HIS WIFE. The audience ends up with the same affliction as she does-questioning the reality of the film, and coming up with elaborate and convoluted theories to support the idea that he's still in a dream. But there is no logical reason to believe he's still dreaming; the spinning top is the only reason we start doubting (if he hasn't spun the top and just went straight outside to see his kids, we wouldn't wonder if it's still a dream). Just like Cobb's wife had no logical reasons to doubt reality, only the nagging idea left behind from the spinning top in their dream.
This is the best thing about Inception; Nolan pulled off an inception on the audience, just as Cobb pulled it off on his wife

    • @toyski6897
      @toyski6897 4 роки тому +175

The craziest thing is that Cobb's wedding ring is his object to decide whether it's real life or a dream. When in his dream he has the ring on, but when he is not dreaming the ring is not on his finger.

The music was the key here for me. All through the movie we hear this theme with atonal, discordant flourishes, implying a state of unreality & unease. Finally, in this last scene it opens out into a beautiful, pure, unaltered, unblemished version of itself, lifting us up as the brass goes soaring out uninterrupted - Leo has made peace with his world.

Cobb clearly prefers his top. The ring exists for the viewer’s assurance that Cobb is finally in the real world, to give the film a happy ending, I dont believe its something where he goes “ok, I’ll spin my top, but I don’t have my ring, so I must not be dreaming”.

The first time I watched this movie was at home with my son and a few of his friends at a birthday sleepover. It ended about 1am. At 5am I was in bed, still wide awake, staring at the ceiling trying to absorb what I had just seen. Perhaps having children makes this last scene so powerful. What an incredible collaboration of writing, directing, acting, and composing.

Interstellar's "Docking" scene is one of my favorite in all of cinema and is one of a handful of scenes that I would change genuinely nothing about. The ending scene here is another one that I'd change nothing about. The soundtrack is absolutely INTEGRAL to the success of both.
But they can't be directly compared, at least in my opinion. The scene in Interstellar is about the triumph of mankind against adversity ("It's not possible..." "No... it's necessary.") and is bombastic and gets you incredibly fired up. This scene in Inception is about the end of a chapter of life, the feeling that you and those around you have been through so much, the feeling of awakening from a dream that feels as though it stretched on forever- and yet, just as that chapter closes, a new chapter opens: a homecoming, a return to loved ones and family members. "Welcome Home, Mr Cobb."

This movie was one of the best edited and incredibly paced movies ever. The way the tension is created in the third act until the very last scene of Saito picking up the gun, and then when Cobb wakes up, It makes the audience feel like they've themselves woke up from a bad dream. A relief, just like when we wake up from a bad dream. Zimmer's music is one of the main characters in this scene that makes this scene as good as it is.

A popular theory... but what if the ring simply symbolizes Cobb's guilt he has felt over the death of his wife and how he caused her to believe her life was a dream? And now that he has had closure over it, he may not need the ring anymore, because he has finally accepted what happened:
And therefore, he can accept his children without caring for weather it's a dream or not. Maybe, in the end, his illusion of Mal won after all, she caused him to stop caring weather it's all real or not.

I think this Hans Zimmer obsession is ruining movies that forces emotions rather than inspires them. But hey, I don't watch movies anymore so who am I to complain. Hans Zimmer is on John Williams level of composing score for film, and he's a master of his craft - but silence is also something which tells, sometimes even as much as music. Roaring orchestral music does not make a movie, the movie does. If it doesn't work without the music, like, at all, then your film is shit and the score simply saves it. I think this scene would work better with silence, or at least a subdued score, and better convey the emotions felt by the involved characters.

      I understand you bro.
But I believe Hans pulled off something which really beautifully captures the emotions of Cobb in this score.
And as @Kleeblättchen mentioned "in the case of inception there is nothing to worry about because the film is just as good and the score complements it perfectly but generally speaking it's not easy to have a perfectly fitting score that neither overshadows the visuals and words nor being too subtle...".
The entire score (how I felt when I watched this movie) was, it perfectly captured the entire transition from Cobbs shock to the reality he comes to terms with.
As the suble beginning of the score perfectly captures the shock Cobb is in and trying to come to terms with it trying to absorb the entire sequence and seeing the team he was with all being fine and knowing he would be able to see his family when Saito makes the call, the score holds it tone to make a transition to get him a level off of his shock and comes closer to the counter which is his biggest one to get away from as the visa gets chopped and then as the guitars kick in to sweeten the shock for what he has now started to feel the accomplishment of his actions whilst the shock starting to fade away even more making him much more relaxed and he feels proud of his actions as he walks away from his team and gives the energy to look at Murphy to know he did it as score holds at those notes rising to the most awaited sequence of the movie has he managed to get to his most cherished kids he despertely wanted to see but there still little more left of the shock makes him take the only thing he could verify if he is in reality and the music stops as his heart stops in fear to see if the kids would turn and if he could see their faces and then. . . they do turn and the music kicks to a tone to make us realize his shock is now almost completely gone from him as he managed to be verbal with his kids and the top starts to throttle and give away it's axis as the music abruptly ends on the notes of violin to say that the only string which might have had on that shock has finally got completely now removed off of his mind as the movie title is in full display " I N C E P T I O N " - DAMNNNNN ! SIMPLY DAMN !

I saw this movie in theatres, I cant remember if it was opening night, but it was pretty close to it so nothing had been spoiled. I remember at the end when the top is spinning, putting my hand over my mouth and leaning in closer. When the top is the only thing in the frame and it cuts to black, there was an audible, collective gasp of everyone in the theater. I'll never forget that.
