    The grooved line would have looked better if you either sanded the black out of the indentations so that it was highlighting the peaks or sanded it off the peaks keeping the black in the grooves. As it is, the black hides the pretty grooves you made making it look like a flat black band.

    • @ayamtaken2580

      Was exactly thinking about this, it looks like a black band

    • @itsgonnabeanaurfromme
      @itsgonnabeanaurfromme 9 місяців тому +30

      You see, people use bowls and not just look at them in a youtube short. So when using them, a person can see the indentations and the texture. It's a creative choice to not do something so obvious and lose all depth. But go off. Make one with your design choices.

    • @ianbelletti6241
      @ianbelletti6241 9 місяців тому +17

      @@itsgonnabeanaurfromme true. However, the choice he made was mostly for looks. That groove pattern doesn't do much for grip on the bowl. Even if it does help, there's still aesthetics to think about when making the choice. Aesthetics can be just as easily important as practicality to f design. This is an option example. The choice to burn the wood making a black band was purely aesthetic. The choice to grind those grooves was mostly aesthetic. I'm not saying to grind off a huge portion of the grooves either. I'm just saying that it would look better if he did one of 2 options that would highlight the grooves that he made.

    • @Aruwyn
      @Aruwyn 9 місяців тому +9

      @@ianbelletti6241sorry! They didn’t mean that people use the grooves for real reasons, they mean that when you own the bowl and are using it, it’s much clearer to be able to see the difference! They meant that it’s a small design choice that is visible when not viewed on camera! ❤❤

    • @jtischCB
      @jtischCB 26 днів тому

      Hey there, @Ursus. Wood specialty shops sell prepared bowl blanks, but save $ and "season" your own! Wax the ends IMMEDIATELY after cutting a wood blank to rough size from a tree with a chainsaw. OR, find a local treecutter and get the size you need.
      It takes time for the wood's moisture content to air out.
      If you try to make a finished bowl out of wet wood, THE BOWL WILL DRY IN AN EGG SHAPE.
      The serious woodturners I know do this:
      1. Turn the wet wood in a rough bowl profile, but leave the bowl wall VERY thick, like 1.5" (3.8 cm).
      2. Put this rough bowl out of the weather somewhere to dry until it's stable (it will dry egg-shaped/oval, but that's okay).
      3. Chuck the dry, seasoned bowl back on your lathe, and turn it again. This time it will stay round.
      This only works if you rough-turn the bowl before letting it dry. If you just put the whole block somewhere to dry, it will take a looong time and there will be "checks" (cracking/splitting), ruining it for making a bowl--but it will be excellent firewood 😂
      p.s. find other woodturners in your city! And learn on UA-cam!
      My favorite place to order woodturning wood, tools, & supplies is Craft Supplies USA woodturnerscatalog.com/
