As a software engineer myself, this is the most accurate "day in the life of a Software Engineer" video I have seen. Touches lot of daily aspects in life and off course Coding.
Man, I would love to start my day in my bedroom at 9:00, take an hour lunch break, an hour trip to the market, and half an hour of personal learning, then finish at 4:00 and say I worked 8 hours, lol.
Some comments says they want to be a software engineer. It may be because this video shows the benefit of working from home, but acutlly I think where you can work properly depends on your personality. As an employee, I am not use to working from home for many days. Sometimes I can't reply urgent messages instantly because I am away from my computer and it may let my colleagues think I am being lazy. That makes me feel nervous. But as a software engineer, I can experience your perspective. Sometimes I would get stuck on implementing codes, and at that moment, I really need a quiet environment for taking a rest and relaxing my brain. It often really works in helping me solve my problems.
I am a software developer I have been developing apps since 1994. QBasic, Turbo Pascal, Delphi, Java, C, C++, C#, PHP, JavaScript, CSS,Java, Spring Framework, Spring Boot. The day of work from home is completely same as mine.
Thanks Sarah for walking through your day as a software engineer. Very insightful especially for folks who aren't in the software/tech industry. I noticed that you are taking a course to eventually move into a management role (project manager) from SDE. I can also maybe suggest considering one more role which is the product manager role as I noticed you like to use your creative side (from journalism). My understanding is that product is more creative/strategic (answers the "what to build & why") and project/program is more operational (answers the "how to build").

So she worked 9 - 4, took a lunch break, and ran a personal errand? And then logged 8 hrs of work? Am I missing something? Not judging, just curious if working in tech is that relaxed..!?
It is most certainly not that relaxed, typically. She should have put in an extra 1.5-2 hours at the end of the day to make up for lunch and the grocery trip. Logging of hours is a bit unusual in the tech industry, unless you're a contractor. It's usually based on output (getting your stuff done), which gives a large leeway of flexibility about how/when you do that. But, for many enterprise tech companies, those demands on output are aggressive and software engineers are frequently 'under the gun'.
@@sh4rzzy Typically, 9ish-5ish. More during crunch time...up to 45-50 hours/week. More than that and you're either in a startup trying to get rich or you're working for the wrong company and should leave. You need to make it to whatever meetings you need to. Then, it's a matter of getting your work done. Depending on the company, there can be some flexibility in that. For example, you can take a couple of hours to run and errand and just make up the time by working late the following day.

Wish we could be remote. I am an L5 Google Software Engineer that was remote. But today they are calling everyone back to the office. I loved being remote.
Hey there! I am genuinely glad to come across this video. I've been using Indeed for a while now, but being able to connect on a deeper level such as here, on your UA-cam channel does gave me some additional insights. Sarah made the overall experience a really exciting one. I would love to connect w/her. Thanks!!
well, such a energetic girl with enormous enjoyment in her life. There is nothing could be tough if we'r doing it with a specific purpose. Keep growing and filling your soul into the Software industry ^_^
So is Java still widely used? I see tons of companies in Indeed, Glassdoor, Linkedin ask for this on top of C# and .NET. You mentioned Reddit, and the subreddits advised to stay away from Java... but, it's hard to avoid that I think. Doesn't make sense, unless it's just internet kids not knowing what they're talking about. Also you say you use HTML and CSS? So are you frontend as well? Sorry for the questions, thanks!
Tbh java and python were pretty abundantly used in recent years. C, C# and C++ came above these 2 all of a sudden in terms of popularity this year. Don't know why or how but... It is what it is. I will not recommend Java to a beginner. But if you kicked off your programming journey with python or c and fluent with either of them, you can try Java. That's what I did
It's like... every time I'm slacking on teaching myself code something like this pops in my recc and I remember my journalism major ass needs to get back on the grind LOL
So my squirrel brain got lost in the forest along the way. You mentioned starting out as a journalism major then ended up doing software engineering. Do you have a degree in software engineering? Thanks!
It's your first day in shops having no employees and empty waste bottle collection replaced by robotic collection and AI just because you have it defined in a namespace. You have a new workspace, but probably thinking how I'm gonna upgrade it again.

Especially with remote
the cut to the dog sleeping after she explained what she was doing was perfect comedic timing. Y'all knew what you were doing.

This felt super down to earth and real, great video and only makes me more excited to break into the software dev industry

What kind of engineer are you? Front-End, Back-End or Full Stack? Thanks. Stay blessed.
I'm full stack but prefer frontend because it provides more instant satisfaction!

Enjoyed this video, looking forward to finish senior year then head to uni and become a ML or software engineer.

@indeed do you guys hire software engineers with only a coding bootcamp education?
