    This is how you do "A Day in the Life of a....."! I've seen many of these types of videos and at the end of them you never really truly know what the person does in the specified role. Instead you would just see people getting coffee or exercising and pretend to type on their workstations. On another note I work in project management as well and this was refreshing to see a project manager showcasing their day and what it takes to be a project manager outside of my industry. Goes to show that project managers have a place in every industry which is why I enjoy my career. Good job Indeed!!

      @@rogerdinhelm4671 Regardless I still answered your question. Not sure why your being condescending. I answered the what and to give context and I answered the “show” by saying “she shows”. Together those two statements answer what she truly does. Not sure what your looking for but other “day in the life of a” usually blur their screens and never really tell you or show you the tools they use. They also never show you engagement with other employees or stakeholders. If they do they edit the audio out. I understand why they do that because they may not want to share confidentiality information. However, indeed did a good job but ensuring that they hand picked activities that she could share and show us in the video above.

    Project Management is an excellent field to work in if you seek excitement, want to avoid dullness, find solving problems quickly to be satisfying, and a whole slew of other pluses. After twenty plus years in software, hardware, and business-related PM work I've retired and now teach PM online. This is an always-growing field where good PMs can earn excellent money and have plenty of opportunities.

    Thanks for your day in the life of a PM. I love project management, you get to lead a team to make a difference, and can really influence the outcome quality. You also have to be able to deal with conflict, mediate, think calmly through tough situations. It is not for everyone, as it can chew you up and spit you out if you let it. Highly recommend doing some formal training to really "sharpen the saw" (Stephen Covey) to become a competent PM. Oh, and I love sitting at my desk with a thermos of coffee to really enhance my thinking during meetings.

    • @mickp10
      @mickp10 Рік тому +6

      @@MontserratGarci , There are a number of ways to get into project management, from starting with formal training, to being part of project teams as a specialist within your organisation in your area of competence (e.g. your speciality within dentistry). If you can, let your manager know you want to be part of projects, or potentially liaise with your project management office (PMO) to see how you can be part of projects (look around your dentist, as everything needs a project, from equipment requirements gathering to installation etc). You can go straight into formal training, including Price2 , Agile practices, PMP etc, but from my 30 years of various industry experience, a majority of project managers are accidental project managers. They become a subject matter expert in their field, are able to deliver (get things done), and these turn from basic tasks to work packages (number of tasks), all of a sudden you have been given a number of people to help you do this…meaning you are leading a project team…… AKA an accidental project management. This is when I thought I needed to develop my skills formally in project management, and did a diploma in project management, which covered Price2, PMBoK, and Agile practices that gave me a “bag of tools” and methodologies to utilise to tailor them to the project I am working on. From my experience, I am best to PM in my industry (business improvement , ICT , and vendor contract negotiations and implementation). I could be a project manager on a construction project , as they use PM methodology, but I stay within my circle of competence as Warren Buffet says ““Everybody’s got a different circle of competence. The important thing is not how big the circle is. The important thing is staying inside the circle.”. The big thing is, ensure you know how to manage risks in a project, as poor risk management can land you in serious trouble, including jail and/or fines (e.g. health & safety, environmental etc)

      Just be cautious - this probably is more representative of a junior PM position in a product development environment. If your field is engineering or software it'll be quite different, particularly if it involves client commercial T&C's such as via NEC4. Your time will absolutely be soaked up by configuration management (CE's, EWN's, TRA's, Risk reduction, and ofcourse baseline & earned value - EVM). Before you then get into indemnities & other ADE's (assumptions, dependencies, exclusions). Good luck - it's a fun career!

    Tweak is a banned word in Project Management btw. It's CHANGE. Once you use this language your scope control will become so much better. Also, for any prospective PM's - a lot of the job will become commercial contracts management through CEMAR or other such NEC4 tools to track EWN's, CE's, prolongations/ deferrals & risk reductions. This role is quite reminiscant of a project admin role or junior PM (assistant PM) if you're job hunting. @@z7z766 Yeah ok I am stupid. No I don’t expect to see the whole project lifecycle, but I do think it’s reasonable to expect to see a Project Manager do at least some project management in an episode intended to outline a day in the life of a project manager. As per my original comment, it looks like an interesting job but she is not a project manager. I’m sorry if this is too difficult for you to understand.

      Fair comment; I work in construction and the points that you raised made sense with respect to my industry. I suppose the same would be true across most industries as it’s an active process from inception to completion. Perhaps her industry doesn’t require that level of detail. If anything, her job is more of information management and control.

    My perception is that , Project Manager job is become equivalent to Office Manager Job. You use software ,meeting, but in reality you don't know anything of project . In fact many University say "you don't need to know or to be an expert about everything of project, because you have just coordinate the project". Basically the role is administrative, an office Manager because in reality you don't know how is real made risk assestment, Quality Management, Operation Management ect. It is total different instead if you did BSc engineer and the MSc Project Manager. Now people study BSc sociology then MSc Project Manager .

    • @matthoffman6962
      @matthoffman6962 Рік тому +3

      I’d say you’re “kind of” correct. You’re right that a project manager doesn’t need to know much about the project and you’re running meetings, following up on tasks, filling out documentation, creating documentation, possibly setting the scope, budget etc. but here’s the thing. Ceos, upper level management ext don’t have time for all of that stuff. So that’s why project managers are needed. To run the project from start to finish.

    This is what every military officer does in some capacity. Legit all of them did this on an unimaginably complex scale at some point in their careers. Once you're "the dude" you track and coordinate everything beginning to end. And here is the thing, lives are on the line. It isn't like you can buy your way or sue your way out of a setback. People die.
    Planning Conferences
    Resourcing and Coordinating
    Decision Points
    Interim Progress Reports
    After Action Reviews
    Honestly, even junior officers can excel at this. We never called it project management though. It is just what we were expected to do as a part of the job.

    No pun intended but here is a take of someone who is working with project managers in tech for about 20 years:
    *A day in the life of a project manager:* typing emails, moving squares on drag and drop boards (KANBAN and co.) from one column to the other, a ton of meetings (most unnecessary), unreal expectations that are based on lack of knowledge, taking a screenshot of a complicated application, moving stuff around in MS paint, then asking the engineering team to do it "quickly" because a PM think that the real work will be as easy as it was to photoshop a screenshot, excess time spent on useless presentations that don't even make sense and will have to be re-done by the head of engineering before the requirements even reach actual development stage, flooding teams with a ton of tasks which do not make sense - then asking questions to understand why it is impossible to do in the way it was written, then the Senior dev who works for the company for only 7 month finding out the PM who works for the company for 3 years have no idea what the company is actually doing etc etc..
    I hope no PM will take me too personally, I am sure there are a few of them that actually do actual work..
