I work in cybersecurity and feel imposter syndrome very often - I find the best way to combat it is to just look back on all the things I've done already, and remembering that the company hired me because they believe that I can do the job. You got this!
In summer this yr I started as a DC Network Engineer for an ISP, I have the impostor syndrome aswell, there are lot of concepts and architecurets I dont understand yet. Some of the seniors/ experts have CCIE and I dont have ccna. @ajboilanger what field in cybersecurity are you? I work parttime and the rest i do my degree in Cybersecurity:)
I've learned to journal daily to combat imposter syndrome. Tracking myself and my thoughts has made remembering I've worked hard to get where I am today. Best of luck with conquering it!
good luck but if you don't have experience or even if you do, each job application you put in you will be competing with over 1,000 other applicants for one position lol
I had seen your intern video and now this popped up on my feed today, you've come a long way. Congratulations !!! Your videos are quite a motivation for me, they're so positive and feel good. Hoping to make it to the top of the hill soon to experience all this ! Anyways, Kudos to you !
❤the content. It is so fun to watch! As to imposter syndrome, I find it help me if I shift my mindset from “I must know everything” to “I’m here to learn and grow.”
Small tip on the Amazon paging app, you can set the first minute of the page to be 10% volume. I do this so that when I get paged when I'm awake, I can just address the page without the page bothering everyone. Really helps prevent the loud alarm in public. :)
Your videos are so relaxing! Also your content is really interesting. I always enjoy these week in the life videos. I’m mentally preparing myself to return to office life since I’ve been doing remote work for the past 4 years. Weird to see my colleagues in person again but these videos are actually helping me to get ready for the big change to my current lifestyle.
Yes, the fear is real. I was in infrastructure production support for 20 years and now it is strange not to have to worry when you go out. You are not alone, With almost 30 years in the field and I still have imposter syndrome. Keep it up you are doing great!!
I'm so glad I got this channel in my recommendations, your videos make me feel good about the corporate world and motivates me work harder and work on my Data structures and leetcode 😂
Thats so so interesting to see a work week in your life especially as I worked till August '24 for Amazon for over 6 years (last as an operations manager for the Customer Service in Germany) so it is really interesting to see such a different "type" of job in the same corporation. Thank you for sharing that :)
I've been working as a dev for 3 years -- what helps me get over thoughts of imposter syndrome is the fact people who are smarter than me think I belong on their team. If you're there, it's because you are supposed to be. Enjoy the journey of never-ending learning that is working in tech :)
In regards of permanent work from the office - Ive been there for almost 5 years - it was about 30 minutes per day to get there and back home. I always thought 30 mins is fine but since 3 years working remotely changed my mindset a lot. Yea, of course I had books, I could learn etc. but this is not the best way to spend about 125 hours per YEAR (if you work for about 250 days). Just enjoy the time in the amazon, get the experience and chose the company which respect your lifetime. We are both young but the biggest issue is that you will not be able to take this time back which u spent on getting to the job and home. The IT world is huge - I was in love with large corp but after few years I tried working in smaller company with their own product and that was my perfect spot :)
This was an awesome video, thanks for the insight on working at these orgs. Also nice touch with the Michael Scott audio as a background for some scenes
I love your videos because you show the perception of the corporate life, obviously for the tech departments but it also applies for other departments, lice CST (I know because I've been there). I think we were all like this in the beginning, kinda out of out depth, kinda overconfident, kinda scared and we definitely all had imposter syndrom
I work just at YVR26 and have even seen you once. Oncall is definitely the most stressful part of my job at AWS. What helps me is to take notes of everything so even if I don’t have the time to resolve or fix a ticket root cause, the next oncall will have a good starting point and I don’t have to remember details.
1:10 There is a trick to avoid any panic during Sev2 Tickets. You can "bounce" the ticket by setting it to pending and then back to work in progress. This thing done repeatedly resets the timer to 7hrs so you can avoid your manager getting paged P.S. Don't do this if the TT is related to some revenue generating service and do write checking in so that your manager and skip manager is aware that you are looking into it
I found a solution to resolve a ticket by applying the case to a real-world scenario. For instance, we provided a specific device for making calls, but it had a very complex name. I said i need to search for a similar product with the same specifications in the market, reasoning that such products would serve the same purpose for users. I spent weeks analyzing the device's properties, fields, and the teams involved to fully understand its functionality. This happened during my first few months at a telecommunications company when I wasn’t yet tasked with developing features, despite being a software engineer. From then on, I found it much easier to implement new functionalities and refactor existing features, focusing on solutions that the end users would find useful.
how did u learn to edit videos? the quality is rly good. for imposter syndrome, im also worried bc im starting a new grad job in tech this summer and im like rly antsy abt how life is gnna change and how i need to be much more responsible/qualified in my life 😢
Reminds me of my EKS On-Call days, the level of deep dive one has to do during SupportOps and working with SDE's. I did though hate waking up someone for a sev2. 😅
Cool video, like the little sound clips. I've never gotten completely over my imposter syndrome, but in my previous career and my new career as a swe, the best way I deal with it is to save as much money as possible, that way even if I am an actual imposter, the worst thing that can happen is I need to find another job. Good luck!
I'm nervous about speaking in public, too. I bet you'll do well, though. PS:: There's a good book named "Severance" by Ling Ma. I could hardly put it down till I finished it. Merry Christmas!
I just carry my laptop whenever I'm on-call. This one time, my team and I were at a movie and someone's pager went off, needless to say, everyone whipped out their laptops to get on the sev-2 lmao, it was embarassing but eh, gotta do what you gotta do
I would like to thank you for the insights we get from your life, you are living my current dream! I wonder if I should maybe weekly vlog my internship at CERN in Switzerland, quite an experience for me, but I am hesitating! Thanks for this video!
love the video :> super high qual as usual i was wondering for your talking segments dyou have a person helping film or is the zoom in’s and stuff like in post/during the take? :o
On Call for systems has existed since... at least the 1960's. Your comments on support are pretty standard for someone new and that is the life for someone experienced. You learn to be flexible in what you do. Well, your social life is more extensive than older days as many people did the support from home rather than the notable number of fancy hang out spots. Being in an office around far more people rather than "your secret space" should allow you to be mentored more on the systems you are to support. Being new and having to come up to speed remotely is not efficient and less effective. Matrix with experts in each system as most systems have common fixes and weaknesses that once you know, getting them back up becomes far easier, quicker and less impactful to your own time. BTW, being in the office where many others are talking can over time lead to added productivity and learning as you be able to jump in and learn things that are related to you or you can provide insight to. Working more closely to others will lead to more productivity for everyone and yield a better work result (as long as the office isn't overly negative).
Liked the way you have showcased your week with as much details as possible. I wanted to know what happens when you fix a paged issue, does it go to QA/SDET first or you deploy it to live directly if it passes your unit tests? Does your team have QA/SDET?
Yeah... I used to work at Amazon as one of their IT Support Engineers in their warehouses, and I (and my team) definitely felt that on-call anxiety... I never left my house when I was on-call LOL
One more thing - i highly recommend the internal DarkStyle(?) tampermonkey script as it supports dark mode for most, if not all, internal websites, including Wiki
I am writing from Central Asia, at the moment I have problems with local not very good people, in a word, looking at you) I have the desire and strength to move forward, thank you very much)
Hello, im a system administrator, and I also do weekly on calls. Sometimes when im not oncall, i wake up thinking that i'm on. This can be frustrating depending on the job, but you just need to get used to it. Nice video and keep it up!

hey, I'm starting at aws as a ng next June. I was an intern last summer so I never went on-call. How do they expect you to fix things when you're barely up to speed?
there is usually documentation for very common problems that u can walk through! but this depends on the team :)
Really a great video , subscribed the channel 😊
yayyy im glad ur here !
how do you do the edit where you write out the text "week in the life" in the intro? Its fireeeeee
