Thanks for the video. So happy to see this update for the MS today! This was a weird omission originally, but I'm glad I now have glide the way I like it! You gotta love the ability to fix something like this with a simple firmware update over USB!
The center detent may not be connected to any circuitry which would make it impossible to implement the glide feature as per the SH101. I think they would try to emulate that functionality if possible. They obviously thought about it enough to choose the 3 postition switch in the first place, but maybe there was an error in the original circuit board, or a made a design decision that meant it couldn't be used.
I thought the glide didn't work in a sequence, but I've just discovered that if you turn the glide knob past 5 when programming notes in a sequence, it does store a glide between those notes. So If you want glide across the sequence, you've got to keep turning the glide knob past 5 for every note you enter. Doesn't seem to be documented.
But that's not the way glide/portamento works on the sh-101. If you've ever heard portamento in a sequence on the sh-101 you'd understand. The MS-1 can't do it.
I haven't been able to get the glide working in the sequencer, have you? I want to be able to have the sequence playing while I increase and decrease the slide knob and hear the changes bejng made in realtime. The SH-101 does it, but the MS-1 doesn't.
Mine MS1 (not 101) portamento switch only got 2 positions, left and right. No center position. Maybe you have an old model. I selected Legato as setting, that makes most sense to me. I just wish a future update would add a setting for Key Priority: Low, High, Last just as the great Model D got. While 8 steps is enough for some old sequences then 16 and 32 might feel a little limiting when the original sequencer had up to 100 notes. So why not link 2x32 for a 64 steps sequence? Simply by selecting current bank/pattern in another way, holding Pattern and press a keybed key. 32 different "linked" patterns, Like bank1 pattern1 + bank1 pattern2 for the lowest key, ..., bank8 pattern 7 + bank8 pattern 8 for the highest keybed key. Surely someone would then argue, why is there no song mode, why not 128 notes. In the end I probably use keystep pro or polyend play sequencer as the master for many modules at the same time. The Tubbutec SH-1oh1 upgrade for the original SH101 looks really good. Maybe the MS1 mk2 will include some of that just like they added the Gligli PRO600 features to the great PRO800. Especially after envelopes got an update, fast mode, in a firmware upgrade.
I have the Behringer MS-1 RD and it doesn't have the MK2 on it. Do I need the 1.0.6 firmware or is it already installed from the factory? I got it recently this year.
Well, the MS-1 gets a lot closer to BOC because the oscillators are all sourced from a single triangle oscillation which is impossible for the BS2 to mimic and many BOC songs have the SH-101, such as Kaini, Roygbiv, Sequoia, Shears, Poppy Seed and many others I have covered. On the other hand I do not recommend the MS-1 because the portamento is so bad and there is no sync of the sample and hold to MIDI and also the sound is not quite right, though close. I would suggest the Roland SH-01a which has 4 oscillators and a sequencer and makes all the BOC sounds. Now, if you are not wanting the BOC sound, the BS2 is a far advanced synth which can make almost ANY sound (except for BOC not perfectly due to phasing of the separate oscillators so it can't do an SH-101). So BS2 a perfect bass synth, love it, but not for BOC, MS-1 a little junky compared to the original and crap portamento and S&H.
@@TheTerracide I haven't had it apart and you could be right but it doesn't need a connection in the middle. 1=Legato 0=Always on. If you want it off you turn Glide to 0.
@@Digiphex Its not a true middle, if you feel the transpose switch underneath it has 3 clicks but the glide only has 2, no idea why they didnt just use the same switch as the transpose. Helpful video though, thanks. Been waiting for this.
At its fastest setting the MS-1 glide is still relatively slow. You have an SH-101, so then how do you like the Behringer MS-1 glide in comparison? When I inquired to Behringer / Music Tribe about updating the glide speed, they sent me to your video to say that the issue had been resolved, misunderstanding my issue. Anyways, if we want glide times below 0.2 seconds, Behringer needs to know that people still want them to update the firmware for better panel control.
@@Digiphex Ah ok, thanks for the reply. I've wondered why you didn't bring up the issue of glide time but now I know why. Maybe one day, after a future update, we will see people covering "Theme from Ernest Borgnine" on an MS-1 with proper glide sound. (until that day I've already modded mine ;) )
No, like all of Behringer's clones, it is flawed in a number of ways. They can't just copy the synths, they have to change them drastically to make them not work right.
Great video! I just got a MS 1 and my MIDI IN doesn't work ... My firmware is 1.1.2 and it's the only only one available with SynthTool. If someone got the same problem and solve it, please help me haha (sorry if my english is not very accurate)
You most likely have figured this out already, but for other with same issues: the fix is to download app called "synthtribe" from behringer website. Its not well documented that the synthtool is obsolete software, which to me was quite frustrating actually. In synthtribe you can update latest FW and get all the features and bugs resolved. Hope someone finds help from this!
I’ve never had the SH, but I have the MS-101 and i love it. It sounds great and if some nerd wants to criticise it from a scope trace because a waveform is 4ns off, so be it
littlegee As a long term user there is a difference. There is something out of phase with the sub on the MS like a mild chorus type of sound. It is not as clean sounding as my original and doesn’t have the punch. That said, the MS is easier to use with its modern features.
@@Digiphex you get differences between sh101 I've had a few that have all had slight tonal differences but at the end of the day they all sounded like a 101 and you could make music with them. I don't see the point in paying 700 or 800 quid for the original unless a collector. In fact I tend to use either the cloud version or tal more than the hardware. People have plenty of choices which is a good thing.
Hopefully they will make a Mark II and fix the sequencer, portamento and sound of it to be more like the original. If it were me I would add cc control of everything, sync LFO and retrigger LFO.
@@Digiphex I'm sure they could fix the sequencer with firmware, I updated mine to v1.1.9 recently but I can't find any update notes for that particular version, do you know if they've added the abilities to chain patterns together yet? seems like a big oversight considering even the td3 has that feature

Yeah that would be the case I reckon. Still scratching my head trying to fathom out how they left off this functionality. It is a clone.

now that youve had lots of time to evaluate it, what are your thoughts on Behr MS-1 vs Bass Station 2 for BOC style sounds?

The glide button in the MS1 is not three positions... so not possible for a firmware
It has a connection at the left, a center detent and a connection at the right. So OFF could be the legato function and ON could be the always on.
