@9:29......How did you access the note value like that? I cannot seem to change the note values for the sequencer. I press play then press and hold pattern while turning the tempo dial. Nothing happens. I changed the clock source in the synth app.....still nothing. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Mooseteets, when you send the MS-101 an external clock - it behaves this way - well at least it was back when the video was recorded! Behringer have been mucking around with the firmware since I did this video - and I believe they've taken stuff away and then added it back again - I really need to do an update to this :)
8:07 FINALLY! This is the fundamental feature missing from so many sequencers e.g in the Roland Boutique JP-08. _All_ sequencers should let you modulate the sequence from the keyboard. It's the feature from CV sequencing that has been most frequently omitted and it's those upstarts at Behringer who have got it right. I'm hoping the Crave implements this too.
Well, I came here to learn more about the B MS-101, but learned a ton about sequences. I for one would love to see more tutorials on exploring great sequenced songs. (Subscribed!)
All i hear is one sound/effect used in different ways. This may be a stupid question as I am new to midi but can you get different sounds, organs, horns, strings etc.
Hi. This is an analog mono synthesizer. The sounds are generated from it are using subtractive synthesis - and it isn't polyphonic. If you want to get other sounds like organs, horns, strings etc - you would need to connect this up to a DAW and use a virtual instrument plugin. This makes the MS-1 a MIDI controller. The audio then wouldn't be coming from the device - instead from inside your computer.
Hi Guillermo, yes you can enter "rests" instead of notes. Details are mentioned on this video, in the user manual and also you can use the sequencer editor on the Synth Tool app ... details on this video: ua-cam.com/video/slawAqTp-ng/v-deo.html&lc=UgyR4ADgQfGqTB9M03J4AaABAg
Hello. How do you change the sequence from 1/8 to 1/16th? Mine won't change when I move the tempo knob while hooked up usb midi. When I turn the tempo / gate length knob it has no effect.
Hi Program 17, Behringer took that feature out of some firmwares. They put it back again on their latest firmware, so all you need to do is update your MS-1/MS-101.
@@program17 well that's puzzling! I've got it to work when it receives an external MIDI clock (in the video it was receiving clock and note MIDI from Ableton Live). Perhaps that is something to do with it? I'm sure we can get to the bottom of this!

Great video , can you let me know how i set up the beatstep pro with this please im using ableton and can only get sound from the internal sequencer. Thanks.
Hi Tred, you can use it via MIDI DIN (so MIDI OUT BSP to MIDI IN MS-101) ... BTW: there's an update to this video here: ua-cam.com/video/ULPWKOVwPYo/v-deo.html this shows that they fixed the sequencer and other issues.
I was able to mitigate some of the delay by going to Preferences > Audio tab > Driver Error Compensation and putting in the same number that's seen in output latency. If "overall latency" says 5.6ms I put -5.6 That locks it in.
I really hope they add MIDI CCs to the new analog Behringer line; Neutron, Model-D, MS-1, etc. This would make it much better for performance and recording altogether.

Tried many settings on ableton midi preferences but everytime its creates loops, change the tempo or octaves or just BUG...... so i use the ableton arp etc .. its so easy to create a quick sequence on the internal sequencer of the Ms 101. your help will be fantastic.

Fair enough, but just remember the original SH-101 didn't even have MIDI. So all the controls would be analog CV internally, and I'm thinking this wouldn't be easily translated over to the digital side with MIDI.
Great Video! Any chance to turn the auto Arpeggiator of? It automatically starts as soon as I play mIdi notes from my ableton "external instrument" channel :(
Hi Koru, if the ARP button light is flashing it means you have it in HOLD mode. You just need to toggle it off. If you mean how it starts a sequencer automatically, that has to be done via a SYSEX message which I've explained on this video here: ua-cam.com/video/ULPWKOVwPYo/v-deo.html

Hi, your video is great. But I can't get the audio signal from ms01 on my software, how did you connect the synth ? Do you still need an external sound card or not?

great video. enjoyed watching and actually the perfect video to watch, when you just unpacked it and don't know about all the features it got..... and are to lazy to read the manual :P Greets from Berlin
Hi Ranzze, nice coincidence. We were debating latency compensation in Ableton Live over at sequencer.de when I saw you posting this video demoing exactly the issue at hand :) The magic wand that seems to yield the least amount of audio lag is described in this article here ask.audio/articles/synchronizing-hardware-in-ableton-live-9 Checkout the section about the External Instrument. Make sure the Monitor option on the armed audio track is set to Auto and NOT In. Midi jitter, is the one thing, though, you can't avoid, unless there's a tight external clock source (I guess u knew that). I noticed that jitter can cause the signal to be up to 3 ms either before or after the pulse. So for those longer recording sessions, I have the midi 2 Ableton Link app on my Ipad. I think, if I link Live running on my Desktop to this app on the ipad, the jitter becomes less obnoxious at least there isn't as much drifting away from the grid over a longer period of time. For shorter recordings (say 16 bars) I straight up quantise the audio recording (right click context menu), to a 1/4 grid, if I want to keep the shuffle of the original sequence. Anyway, thanks a lot for the demo, if seen horrible things done to the MS 101 :) but this was very musical and I learned some famous patterns. cheers
Hi M. Le biberon, thanks for linking me up to the discussion. I'm glad it isn't just me then :/ ... I should also mention that I've raised the issue with Behringer via a Support Ticket - so I will report back when I hear a response from them.
What are you having trouble with? The sound generation is a copy of the original SH-101 - so this should be fairly straight forward. However, I do think they could have done a much better job with the sequencer :)
@@ranzee hey thank you forma answer well my main problem now is When I récord it plugged directly to my focusrite 2i2 3rd generation it makes a weird noise like a pink noise something like that, and another problem is Midi clock usb sync I dont have a drum machine so I sync it with my daw waveform 11 and it works properlly for about a minute then it gets out of tempo
So you mean changing the sequence settings whilst the sequence is running? There are some performance options whilst the sequence is playing - like glide, swing, double/triple/quadruple step, mute step, transpose ...
@@ranzee i mean (with the clock running) enter notes, program a sequence, and it will play it back i guess the term would be "programming on the fly" bzzzzzz

Nice studio, you have a great collection of synthesizers and keyboards.
Hey Retro!, thanks mate.
does it do slides?
Hi Mike, yes - when you tie the steps it slides.
Do you know if there's a midi cc message for a slide?
WHERE IS THE MIDI CC IMPLEMENTATION CHART FOR THE MS-101 ???
Ask Behringer :)
Thank you!
Dear Ranzee,
verry nice viedeo about the sequenzer of the MS-101.
I love the 101-Sound and the easy way, to creat the wonderfull old analog sounds.
I own the Roland Boutique SH01 and happy abaout the nasty 101-Sounds in my setup. 😍
Best reguards from germany
Hey Charly! The SH-01A is really awesome - and as I own one, believe me - it is very close to being the real thing!
Great video on your synths
Thanks Kenneth!
I love love the classic baselines G Mororder and New Order
it was fun doing this too :)
great video. enjoyed watching and actually the perfect video to watch, when you just unpacked it and don't know about all the features it got..... and are to lazy to read the manual :P
Greets from Berlin
thanks Nikolai - glad you liked it.
I like your video, but it is hard to see sometimes which button u press cos your hads cover the wiew, otherwise realy good video.thank u.
thanks for the feedback - I actually say the button combinations also - so the audio is part of the instruction.
ok : )
Great tutorial.... make it up as you go along is my life lol .... still not sure about this synth ... have pencilled it in ... awesome video 😎✌️
At first, I thought mine was broke.....2 days later.....have not slept a wink. This thing is solid as the day is long.
My favourite sequences are on Vangelis' Spiral album.
Yes, there are some amazing sequences on that album, agreed!
Hi Ranzze, nice coincidence. We were debating latency compensation in Ableton Live over at sequencer.de when I saw you posting this video demoing exactly the issue at hand :)
The magic wand that seems to yield the least amount of audio lag is described in this article here
ask.audio/articles/synchronizing-hardware-in-ableton-live-9
Checkout the section about the External Instrument.
Great work Mate! Very much interested in seeing this play with the rack mounted Boog for CV shenanigans.
hey 888berg - thanks mate - I will endeavour to get this happening!
Thank you very much
Cool synth
Cheers Jim!
I wish I had bought the red one
Never too late for a 2nd 101 :)
I bought one today I really dont know how to usé it, so I think I am going to get rid of it, dont even know how properly with this
What are you having trouble with? The sound generation is a copy of the original SH-101 - so this should be fairly straight forward. However, I do think they could have done a much better job with the sequencer :)
@@ranzee hey thank you forma answer well my main problem now is When I récord it plugged directly to my focusrite 2i2 3rd generation it makes a weird noise like a pink noise something like that, and another problem is Midi clock usb sync I dont have a drum machine so I sync it with my daw waveform 11 and it works properlly for about a minute then it gets out of tempo
Sorry for my English I am out of practice and I am frontera Bolivia so my main language is Español Jejejej saludos y gracias por responder
@@Monsterhunter2069 I would log a support request with Behringer
🙏❤
if only you could access the sequencer without having to stop and start the clock :/
it would be incredible!
So you mean changing the sequence settings whilst the sequence is running? There are some performance options whilst the sequence is playing - like glide, swing, double/triple/quadruple step, mute step, transpose ...
@@ranzee i mean (with the clock running)
enter notes, program a sequence, and it will play it back
i guess the term would be "programming on the fly"
