I'm surprised I have to explain the whole "Ben Stiller" thing at the start. He directed the movie. His career was on the line, not Matthew Broderick. Broderick was a successful stage actor who really had nothing to loss at this point. Carrey and Stiller were the ones taking the risk.
Definitely, especially Carrey, who not too long after Cable Guy, decided to and try more dramatic roles like Truman Show, Man on the Moon, and Majestic. I've always looked at Jim Carrey as a very bright comedic-actor who knew sooner or later he would need to branch out and sort of reinvent himself. You can't be goofy Pet Detective or Lloyd Christmas forever.
WOW! This movie seemed SCARY. But JIM CARREY was supposed to be a comedian. I understand he wants an Oscar, but he needs to give the fans what they want--- COMEDY. I did connect with the movie is some weird way though- I guess there's a dark side within us ALL, ENJOYED THIS COMMENTARY. THANKS FOR THIS!!!🙏🙏🙏
The Hopper Family Vlog! I don't believe Jim Carrey should only be accepted as a purely comedic actor. He's an amazing dramatic actor too. 'The Truman Show', 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', and 'Man on the Moon' are some of the great examples of how talented he is. As a fan of Jim Carrey, I want this. Amazing variety and talent is what his fans want.
I actually don't like a lot of Jim Carrey's comedy movies that much. But I think he did amazing in his dramatic roles.

So many of his lines really hit home. I mean, my family has always supported me, and taken care of me, yet I´ve also spent a lot of my time watching films and tv shows. It´s one of my passions though we all know watching too much it´s not always healthy.
that line was actually kind of shocking and sad, I mean if you were a psychiatrist you'd start writing a perscription right there that's the danger of having the talent carrey has you can give yourself any disease

What an instantly misunderstood classic. That line is scorched into my conciousness and the only better moment in the movie is the look of sublime rediscovery on the face of Kyle Gass remembering that books exist.

I never knew ppl hated this movie until a couple of years ago. I thought ppl loved it. Definitely one of Jim's best movie
It was all because of the terrible advertisements for it. They straight lied to about what kind of movie it was. So lots of angry parents who took their kids to another dumb Jim Carrey movie and bummed out stoner kids. I think I was the only one of my friends who liked it at the time and that was mainly cause I didn't know what the movie was supposed to be about.
+Steve Rogers IKR the trailers for The Cable Guy made it seem like a full on COMEDY instead of a Thriller Comedy. Had the trailer made it look like a Thrilledy it would have done better. The trailer highlighted the comical parts of the movie and ignored the creepy parts. Even putting in the scene where Chip is harrassing Steven over the phone while lying in a vent in the dark would have been great.
The Unknown Psycho People just go with the flow. Like how everybody says Waterworld sucked but i love that movie.
They did the same with 'eternal sunshine',, my jaw, I do believe, literally dropped the first time I saw the trailer(somewhere'bout 30 times into having watched the movie),, that's pretty fcuked up marketing,methinks,,freakin love the piece but you certainly can't expect most people to be up for it,especially jus tossing it at em like that?
@Steve Rogers go back and watch the trailer again. They use Don Lafontaine for it, who only does action movies and thrillers as far as I know, and it showed some of the creepy parts of the movie. Everyone probably just assumed that it was strictly comedy because it's Jim Carey

I’ve always been fascinated by how criminally underrated this move is. I was 13 when it came out, watched it in theater, and I remember getting it almost right away. It was so insightful and ahead of its time (much like Truman Show and Man In The Moon, to name a few). Generationally, it was the comedy parallel to Fight Club.
But don’t take my word for it!
Christopher Edmiston I saw it in theatres in 96, I was 11 years old, I went with my two older brothers and I loved it but I noticed my brothers seemed quite on the way out of the cinema and when I asked them if they liked it they just shrugged. I must of seen it a hundred times since and I just got the Blu-ray of it with Jim Carey doing his first ever commentary on it. It’s a true cult classic.
This great movie suffered the Nickelback effect, where it was cool to hate it and ignore it. Most didn't even see it and took word of mouth as gospel. That, and people *thought* they wanted the same ol' Jim Carrey, and whined when this movie made them think. :P
Yeah but Nickelback actually sucks this Movie not.

As a kid I was always terrified with the scene where he's watching through the peep hole and Jim's character is having some sort of bi-polar episode. Really great, great film.
" somebody has to kill the babysitter" is one of my favorite lines and i think and i dont know if it was intended ,but it works on two levels for me. him not wanting other to go through what he did so he takes of the signal. but hes also saying it when hes trying to be talked of the ledge. so its always also been a reference to horror films for me. you dont want the babysitter to go "please no" and the killer to go "ok" and leave. for the plot to happen someones got to kill the babysitter. he's saying his role is to be the villain.
This movie is totally relatable & very sad actually. An innocent kid being made to harbor all this expectation for meaningful connections in this life, only from seeing & dreaming of them vicariously through technology. Like his life was just formulated to disappoint him eventually no matter what. The false promises lent through technology fuel the desires that, if entertained, may lead to significant disappointment...
One thing that stands out to me is how he was able to be emotionally honest with his disappointment when he was a kid, though as an adult with much more to handle, he is hardened & combative, as if determined to compete for the reward he never attained in youth...
As a child it is easy to expect happiness from life, but as an adult it is easy to confirm on ways to consolidate your disappointment with distractions. The story expresses how he may have had the best chance for fulfillment as a child if he were to have rejected technology to begin with, though equally it could be said that he was an innocently misguided victim. A victim of his own expectations.
His attempt to form meaningful connections in his life made him gross & psychotic, but he only ever wanted what he felt he never got from the world when he was young. It's the story of a gross trick being played on someone who was willing to care & struggle until it practically broke them, yet that is the logic of investing so much interest in this life. It can take a while to become properly disappointed if you cling to expectations, but he was practically doomed to feel entitled to false reward from early on.
What an insightful tale, actually. Indeed, only with the sacrifice of all technologies -- the body of the individual being the preliminary technology -- can the greater things in life be experienced. Technological comfort & worldly temptation is the cause of his suffering, so he chooses to forfeit these things at last. Life is certainly a cruelly confounding experience, we all being relative creatures of habit who are fated to experience death after time.
I LOVED this movie because it was one of the first few movies where I empathized with the villain. It helps that Jim Carey is the Cable Guy and has the whackiness I expected from him thanks to The Mask. He got all creepy toward Steven and I was creeped out too, but there was something in me even as a kid where I recognized his character was just sorely misunderstood and fundamentally lonely, which is why he did what he did.
I feel exactly the same way. I also can really relate to him having spent a lot of lonely time in front of the tv and still do

When Jim Carrey is watching the trial on TV and shivers... too funny
The best scene in the entire movie, is the conversation Chip and Steven have at the breakfast table the morning after the party.
The slow reveal of the girl being a prostitute is priceless.
Every line and delivery of that scence is excellent, the way chip says "what do mean buy what? The women!"

I watched THE CABLE GUY in theaters during opening weekend back in 1996. I loved it then and I love it now!!

Yes!!!! Finally someone made this long overdue video about the actual genious of Cable Guy. I could never understand the huge backlash this movie got over the years. Your video explained it better and went even further as my own analysis of this movie. Really nice Video Ryan, thank you!!! :D
Carrey was coming off of Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber when this movie came out. People were expecting a must-see comedy, which the Cable Guy isn't. It has its funny moment, but it really shouldn't be lumped together with those other movies. And part of that problem was Carrey playing the same loud, wacky character in all of his movies during that time.
I liked Carrey in the Cable Guy, but he probably hurt it more than he helped it.
That is correct, I just never couldn't see it with the same eyes as probably the other viewers. I don't want to sound like a smart ass but I knew by the first 20 Minutes that this movie is going in a way different direction then all his other movies before and loved the movie for it. Sure he plays a loud and obnoxious character but this time the character felt like he had a purpose to be that way and not just for the sake of entertainment value.
Unfortunatley yes but thank God the movie seems to build right now (as Ryan also stated) a better reputation than it had before. Doesn't serve the movie anymore sure but at least people now understand the movies intend. Would love to see an interview today with Ben Stiller reflecting on this movie.
Learning what the movie is about in the first 20 minutes doesn't mean much to someone who already paid for a theater ticket or rental.
None of this really explains the backlash from critics though. They are supposed to be able to get past their own bias enough to at least give the movie a fair chance to stand on its own merits. This is why I tend to just read user reviews on IMDB these days, rather than seeking out some professional critic's opinion.

@@justsomeguy8385 I don’t think it was as much of his character as it was the advertising. Watch the trailer for it and it’s clear through how they edited it that it shows it to be more of a family film than a thriller. I think the way he played his character is one of the main things that made the movie so great, but the way they advertised it made it so under appreciated in my opinion. But I get how his character could be seen as too much by some in regards to something like a thriller.
One of my favorite movies when I was younger, I used to watch In Living Color with my auntie so I was already a fan, and when he made it big I watched all his movies lol I'm glad this movie is finally being accepted

Saw this movie on HBO when I was about 7 or 10 years old.. Even then I could tell it was on some dark, deeper shit and loved it.

The Sam & Stan Sweet trial was a spoof on the Menendez brothrs trial, not O.J. But I love your movie analysis vids nonetheless :)

It’s both. It’s meant to be a satire of the (then brand new) 24 hour news cycle and how it mirrors our lives. So the fake trial they invented took elements from a few of the huge blockbuster trials of the time. Them being formerly beloved celebrities is absolutely a reference to OJ.
This film freaked me out when I was a kid. I think it's partially responsible for my fear of new people I meet secretly being mental.
The Ben Stiller character isn't based on OJ, it's directly based on the Menendez brothers trial that was happening around that time (which was also a TV spectacle). He even dresses like one of them with the glasses.
I find myself watching this movie every five years or so. Absolutely love it and how in two different scenes he sings/hums the music as it's playing loudly in the background.
I saw this movie a couple of years ago, and like many, I expected a comedy, but when I saw it, I was faced with a thriller, which I didnt really expect. Although, I was reslly blown away and looked it up online, and was surprised at how much it bombed. It's crazy how movies like The Thing and Cable Guy went without appreciation.

This film is one of best modern examples of how our perception and expectations from advertising can absolutely ruin the impact it has and reception it receives. My dad showed me it when I was a young kid and I loved it, its a great dark comedy.
I haven't watched this movie, but I've watched The Truman Show recently and it was a damn brilliant movie! Made me wonder if we're indeed living in some simulated world where we are toyed around for some sadistic entertainment through the "fate" concept.

I watched The Truman Show a month ago and then this a couple minutes ago, its a very interesting experience watching Carrey playing someone who was unknowingly being recorded all his life and then someone who grew up solely watching television and is socially awkward.
It's actually one of my favourite movies of all time! I absolutely love it and Jim was phenomenal in this role.

Since we're on the subject of Ben Stiller, I think you should do a video on Tropic Thunder and how The Cable Guy and Tropic thunder are some of the smartest satires of cinema history. Ben Stiller is a fantastic Director.

Matthew Brodericks nightmare is so nostalgic for me it has a dark yet comedic tone that I didnt really pick up on when I was younger its an amazing scene. I will always come back to Cable Guy its nostalgic even now I still think its so underrated and underappreciated.

This hit cable in summer of 97, and me and my little cousin watched it Everytime they showed it, if we were outside playing, we went inside when we knew the cable guy was coming on.

Yeah I agree, but here comes a cliché; do film critics really have anything relevant to say about movies? I rarely remember agreeing with a critic, especially not about films that are "B-movies" or a little bit out of hte ordinary like The Cable Guy. They cannot recognize the quality in those.

The trial parody was also partly based on the story of the Menendez Brothers murders which had also recently been in the news. I know because I was a kid at the time and remember a lot of people talking about the case.

I love this movie. I think it's peak Jim Carrey. you laugh with him, feel sad for him and kind of fear him all in the same movie. I just watched it last night for the first time in a long time and was really struck with how good the cinematography was as well. Very dynamic.

like, with this a lot of it, you have to think Carrey is just as good in every other movie but the director did it differently in this one he got special treatment with the lighting and closeups

I always love seeing people make videos about this flick, I've rarely seen the discussion around such a seemingly unremarkable movie go through so many iterations, it's a polarizing one for sure.
It's thought by many people, including myself, that Chip has something called Borderline Personality Disorder. To have BPD a person has to have 5 of 9 symptoms. Chip displays all nine during the course of the film.

Haha yah I just recently rewatched the movie and I noticed Bob Odenkirk. I was pleasantly surprised. However, he only gets one real line and he puts on a weird voice (when Stephen punches Chip).

This movie is genius, I saw it for the first time today and I just can't understand why people hate it. It is full of hidden meanings. It is an awesome satire of that period of history. Feels like the 2 main characters are the good and bad side of the same person, and the bad side is trying to make the good one into a grown up person and when he is done he jumps off the tower because he is no longer needed.
I haven't watched this movie since I were young. Loved it then, but I'll need to watch it again to see how it holds up.

I always thought the murder trail in the film referenced the Menendez trail in the early 90's. The clothing that Ben Stiller wears in is almost the same thing the brothers wore in court hearings.
There’s also a tinge of the famed Menendez brothers trial in the Ben Stiller sub-plot.
It’s interesting how Ben Stiller’s wardrobe almost reflects the Menendez Brothers’ outfits from their trials
I'm very happy this movie has finally started getting the recognition it deserves. My group of friends and I've always loved The Cable Guy and could never understand why critics and the such gave it a bad reputation and disliked it so much. I think it's a brilliant, hilarious and slightly disturbing blend of originality

Cable guy is one of my favorite movies! I’ve always loved this movie and have watched it hundreds of time! Great video man!
I can't understand people not liking this movie. It's one of the best dark comedies ever. Jim Carrey is still hilarious even if his character is unhinged and even creepy at times. His chemistry with Broderick is great. It's one of my favorites.
Just the whole significant difference between the Ace Ventura/Lloyd Christmas characters and the Cable Guy character. And the studio got minimal box office returns after shelling $20M to Carrey for the role. It was a minor success when the studio sought the blockbusters Carrey had in 1994.

I watched this the other day on prime. This has become my favorite movie of his. Being 32 I was the biggest fan of his. I can't tell you how many time I watched When Nature Calls. My friend and I would quote that me every day.
I love this movie and a watch it when i was like 5 years old and still love it
I only saw this movie 5 years ago, but even without the context of the 90s television influence, this movie is still brilliant and still holds up. Whilst people aren't watching tv as much, we are still staring at a screen of media for a lot of our time. As long as that is still the case, this film will still be relevant. I often refer to this movie when someone has been staring at the tv too long, to which I comment "Kill the babysitter" to tell them to switch it off. Being 20, most people my age don't get the reference but I still think it's funny, so I say it for my own amusement.

This movie, and KITH season five were the core foundation of my circle of friends dark, bizarre humor.
There are few characters as treasured to me as Chip. The loneliness and earnestness just aches out of Carrey’s performance.
Still laugh my ass off when I watch it today.
I always thought of Chip as Mr. Hyde to Steven's Doctor Jekyll.
I always knew this movie as the movie everyone shat on for being so awful. But finally viewing it myself I don't see why it was so hated. I actually really enjoyed it, this psychological thriller. How Chip is able to turn Steve's family against him, get him fired from work, and shows he could even emotionally sway and get close with Robin if he wanted to all just using what he's learned from TV is cool a premise. He says it himself he could be your best friend or worst enemy. Just like all the things he's seen on TV, he could be the jovial joking neighbor in a comedy or the calculated plotting man like DR Lectar. And how Chip was ahead thinking, shopping from home gaming internationally things we have today. Like it so makes me wonder what a modern remake of it would be like. Be the scream franchise to thrillers as scream was to slasher horror. I love how during the ending like Steve in jail, you see how Chip is so connected with people he could get away with whatever just cause he did them a solid and gave them cable. The only thing I didn't 100% get was the whole Ben stiller murder court bits. I feel it's an underrated jem honestly.
Great introspective video you posted on this film. I find it interesting how the cable guy tries to (according to you, and now myself) buy the friendship of Mathew Broderick's character. Thereby feeling entitled to pop by the guy's apartment whenever he wants. Creepy to the max. I know a person from High school who has many things in common with Carrey's character and has allegedly stalked several people. Getting back to the film. I enjoyed it the first time I rented it, and IMO it is vastly underrated. God bless.
PS: Ben Stiller and Jim Carrey deserve mad props this film, as do all of the people involved in the making of it.
