I think this is one of Jim Carrey's best roles. "Chip" was a goofy, eccentric character who also had his dark moments. You know what? Any person who is goofy, eccentric, or bubbly (they can be the happiest damn person you've ever met) has a dark side. They've been through some shit in their lives. Some are good at hiding it, some aren't. Chip is one of those people who tries to hide it by being what he thinks is a fantastic friend, but he ends up cracking and letting the darkness take over as he is rejected by Steven. I think this is a role that we needed from Carrey. He obviously had a clear character in his mind, and I think he portrayed it pretty damn well. Again, this is one of Carrey's best roles. Wow, I didn't expect to write this much.
Hell yeah, I always loved it, I was just 12 and English isn't my first language, but getting some of Chip's dialogue, references and jokes later on was damn cool, I was so intrigued at the time for what I was missing and had no pc/internet to do some research and understand the whole thing but I enjoyed it every time I saw it and of course, the script, acting, humor, just seeing a different version of Jim was great. Now that I think about it, I think I even enjoy the fact that it just isn't everyone's cup of tea (I devour everything comedy).

The Cable Guy is one of my favorite movies of all time! I love Jim Carrey and dark comedy is my favorite genre of humor and this movie is absolutely genius! So intelligent and incredibly hilarious! The cast was really talented too: Jim Carrey, Matthew Broderick, Leslie Mann, Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson. The Cable Guy is legendary and it shall remain a classic forever, no matter what any stupid critic says!
-Even Kyle Gas makes a BRIEF cameo in this movie, pretty sure there's like 2 shots of him as one of the rando's in front of their television sets. Looking back on it as somebody who was born in 1994 and grew up with alot of Jack Black's goofier, more central roles in movies, its also kinda neat to see how he can be an average Joe side character who's even a bit sarcastic and moody. I agree as well that Carrey is quite stellar in this movie, his imaginative acting portrays the character in a dark comedy style that in my opinion was well achieved in alot of mid-late 90's era films.
I was looking for a carry comedy, and watched this. It’s an amazing character study about what would usually be an over eager side character in a sandler film.
I remember when this film came out, and back then, it actually seemed to fit it's time better than it would now. It was intended to be a send up to the Psychological/Suspense/Thriller genre that was really big back in the 90's. Starting back with Fatal Attraction back in 1987, and continuing with Misery, Unlawful Entry, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, The Crush, Single White Female. and many others to follow. Films that where all about ordinary people who cross paths with the wrong person, that at first seem unassuming if somewhat off, start getting a little to close, and become a nightmare for everyone involved. The Cable Guy just took that more seriously dramatic subgenre which everyone was already familiar with and poked fun at it. And I thought it worked pretty well.
The thing is he is doing exactly what the Matthew Broderick character is doing to the woman who broke up with him but magnified. I think I understood it pretty well at the time and I did like it and didn't understand why other people didn't, but I also didn't like Jim Carry's mainstream movies at the the time though, so maybe that explains why I enjoyed it.
Thats probably why Jims line "we could have been blood brothers, but you're too needy. Ask Robin." hit so well, because jim's character was even more needy and he knew it but was in psycho mode lol
Funnily I don't see Broderick's relationship with Robin in the same light, despite the fact I generally find Broderick characters dislikeable, more-so for him than anything with the character. Robin, I find, is on a worse level even to Steven for just being utterly dislikeable. Fair enough, she wanted space and asked Steven to move out following his proposal, that's a difficult situation for him to be in but understandable regardless. So it seems like they're at a point where they're taking some time apart from each other. Only, following Steven's Sleepless in Seattle moves suggested by Chip, she suddenly seems interested in rebuilding their romantic relationship that she decided was moving too fast. That's all well and good. But then she completely leaves Steven on the hook to go on a date with another man and not only expects him to understand but derisively tells him that, in spite of her recent pushes for them to begin returning to where they were, unwittingly motivated by Steven's saying all the right things, 'that doesn't mean we're officially back together', telling him she loves him but that she's still going on a date with another man, which is utterly bizarre for someone acting like they're still working towards being together again but just need some space from the urgency that a proposal brought on. That's just knowingly leaving Steven completely hanging while she shops around for other men and asserting to him that's what she should be doing when he checks her on it. Again, after meeting Chip perhaps three times maximum, she invites him to a game night with Steven's family without telling Steven despite it being a night in with his family and again, almost scornfully, condescendingly acts like he should be cool and casual that she invited Chip despite Steven's noticeable panic, regardless of whether or not she knows the recent events, not even taking the time to hear out the man who's supposed to be her boyfriend. But that's besides the point as, even when Steven addresses Chip as 'a lunatic and a felon', she just shuts him down with 'No, don't go. Steven, you are being an asshole' in front of his own family, the family of a man she was happy to play the field with just days before, despite his vocal protests. And yet they happily end up together by the end of the movie? I'd like to call it a 'maybe they deserve each other' but even despite Steven's flaws (perhaps they're meant to be 'everyman defects') he's far better than Robin who is just awful. And again, maybe that's part of the dark humour that I'm just not gelling with, that everything is closing in on Steven whether it makes sense for it to or not. But man does Robin suck.
Watched it a few times back in 1990s when I was a kid and I liked this movie. I still think it's actually a good movie. It was one of those rare instances when Broderick proved he can act.
I love this movie. It's weirdly dated yet it's also timeless. The fact that even in the 90s cable television made us more lonely and solitary says something, especially in the age of ubiquitous social media.
I was weirded out by the Cable Guy when I first watched it. Then again, I was maybe a 12 year old kid. I think it's a really good movie. It's dark but not off putting, and I think it's really clever. If it did come out today, I think it would have done much better
+Andriano I had heard of it, but I didn't hate it myself. It WAS different than what we were used to for Jim Carey, but it's not a bad movie. It's possible people wanted to laugh because it's Jim Carey, but didn't think stalking was funny.
I like The Cable Guy. I think people didn't like it at the time because he jumped off the diving board of slapstick comedy to dark comedy. He was trying to break the typecast mould. He eventually did break the typecast mould with The Truman Show, Spotless Mind, and some others. As an artist trying to break the mould I have to hand it to him. And as a dark twisted comedy its not bad, if dark and twisted comedies are your thing.
I always remember kinda empathizing with Carrey's character at the end. He really was so completely socially repressed and unable to form meaningful relationships due to it. He was a crazy stalker, but only because he was so desperately alone.
I never knew this film was so hated, it's my favorite Jim Carrey movie by far. I found it just dark enough without being too jarring and just goofy enough without falling into the typical overly goofy Carrey acting that turned me off of some of his more typically beloved films. As for whether or not Carrey's character was realistic enough, I may not know anyone who is that clingy and stalkerish, but I think everyone knows someone who was raised by television, or just had parents who weren't very present in their lives, which gave Carrey's character a depth that had really been lacking from all his other roles. I also liked the usually subtle messages of the negative impact that TV can have on people, and the obsessive interest we have towards the mentally ill, as evidenced by the scenes dealing with the trial of a famous actor who murdered his brother, both played by Ben Stiller, running throughout the film. It gets a little hamfisted in the scene where the TV goes out and the schlubby guy at 5:21 starts reading a book with a little "huh, this is actually pretty good" expression, but even then it's more subtle than you'd expect in a comedy like this. I also really liked the ending, where Carrey nearly falls to his death, greatly injuries himself, is being taken to the hospital via helicopter, and the guy at 6:18 starts acting friendly with Carrey's character, to which Carrey responds in a way that implies he's going to do the same thing he had been doing to Broderick's character again with this new guy. A lesser movie would've made an ending where Carrey's character somehow grows out of his craziness and completely changes his personality to give it a more happy spin, but having him start up another obsessive "friendship" gives it a more appropriately creepy end that makes the viewer question how many times Carrey has done this before, how many times he'll keep doing it, and just how far he'll go with it. I think this movie is funnier than "Liar Liar" and is genuinely more intelligent than "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind", and I would love to see it get a sequel or a remake. Maybe even something that makes it even weirder and darker to keep up with how much films have changed in the past nearly 20 years.
I was very surprised when i found this was one of Carrey's most hated films. Its one of the firsts that really got me into his movies. I love it! It being of his most hated movies, would have been the LAST thing i would expect. This is one of my favorites of all time!
Netflix's rating system isn't based on everyone else's rating, it's based on how the system thinks YOU would rate it. That being said, if you love it, not sure why it's a 2.
This movie is great and only people over 45 seem to dislike it. I don't know a single film lover my age that doesn't consider this one of the best movies of its time period.
I fully agree and never understood why some friends didnt like it at the time...I tell them now to check it out because it really is a great film "Somebodys gotta kill the babysitter!"
I found out that this movie was hated by watching that Simpsons episode where Homer rips the script of this movie and he says it almost ruined Jim Carrey's career.
This is by far my favorite Nostalgia Critic episode. I was one of those people who thought the movie was too dark. After I saw this, I immediately wanted to see it again. I now regard it as one of my favorite movies.
There is no such thing as a true fan. Jim Carrey is my favourite comedian and I love nearly all of his movies. (Strangely enough, because Jim Carrey played the Riddler, I became a superhero fan so... yeah) However, I mostly may be against people who say they are true fans because they always say shit like, "If you were a true fan, you would be against this new stuff they do" because a fan is a fan, no matter how much of a fan you are.
I actually liked this film! Jim Carrey portraying a stalking over-obsessive clingy psychopath was actually rather clever! And yes, I have met someone like this before. There was this guy who had no friends in my school so out of sympathy, I decided to befriend him. Only to result in bad consequences. He thought he was my best friend when I never entirely knew him and he wanted to replace my current best friends, including getting too personal with me. I decided to end our friendship and he got me into trouble a lot.
Same with Lucasfilm. Basically, these moves are about financial stability:Marvel not wanting to go bankrupt again like they did in the '90s which caused them to sell the film rights of X-Men, Spider-Man, Deadpool, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Hulk, etc and Lucas not wanting his company to fall apart as he went into retirement
+victoria martines But why? Disney has done better with the Marvel IPs than Sony or Fox had up to the point that Disney bought Marvel. Fox is doing better with their licenses, but that seems more in response to what Disney has done; Sony is still sucking with their licenses though.
+Dargonhuman Eh, it depends on where you look. Yea, the movies have arguably been better (after a rocky start with Iron Man 3 and Thor 2), but you could argue that aside from Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes the Marvel cartoons have sucked. Then again, Marvel cartoons always had a spotty track record and never could match the consistency of DC cartoons.
I honestly just watched this movie for the first time today. I wasn't expecting much, but was surprised to find I actually really liked it. I also felt it was ahead of its time
It's a great movie, it was just 10-15 years ahead of it's time. If it had been released in 2010 it would have been widely acclaimed IMO as great social commentary about how technology is being perceived into turning us into zombies.
I might be a minority on this but the Cable Guy is my favourite Jim Carrey film after Dumb and Dumber. I even prefer this film over Ace Ventura and Liar Liar, blasphamey I know. I like how this film portrays the possibilty of having one friend that just doesn't respect your privacy and would impose all sorts of harrasment just to get your attention.
I loved Cable Guy?! I thought it was hilariously dark, the brutal humor is just so entertaining. I seriously want to see Jim Carey in more comedic horror or dark comedy films!
I WATCHED IT SO MANY TIMES AT MY FRIENDS HOUSE HE JUST GAVE MY THE TAPE! I LITERALLY SAW THIS MOVIE AROUND 30 TO 40 TIMES! IT RULED! I NEVER THOUGHT IT WAS DARK, IF I'M BEING HONEST I THINK THIS MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE JIM CARREY MOVIE IT'S LIKE A 3 WAY TIE.
I haven't seen The Cable Guy in a long time, but I remember experiencing schadenfreude when it came out and was poorly received because I thought Jim Carrey was overrated and needed some wind taken out of his sails. But then I caught it after it was released on video and it instantly became my favorite thing he'd done up to that point.
One of my favorite parts is when they go out to eat at that medieval restaurant and end up fighting, hahaha. I fucking love that part. But yeah, this is just an all around great movie.
Whenever you say annoying you cut to the karaoke scene which for me is the highlight of the movie and the funniest scene in it, Jim Carey was great doing that song, I can't understand how anyone would think of it as annoying
Because Jim always played happy people but in the cable guy, he plays a man with depression and who is socially akward, he is desperate after friends to the point where he actually gets in touch with someones family, to make them believe that he is depressed and breaks the law by stealing, i believe that this is the greatest movie in his entire career this movie made him a superstar, no one expected Jim Carrey to make a dark movie with modern issues that many people struggle with.
i rewatched it again today, i've always loved this movie, I've watched it so many times I've lost count ! i love the plot , love the characters , I love how freakishly lonely chip is , I love that it's ahead of it's time ! and I definitely love him carrey's portrayal of this character , the look in his eyes , that madness!
I, personally liked 'The Cable Guy'... In my view, the soundtrack was good, as well & I have almost every song from the movie on my computer, but, that's another story for another time. If I remember it, correctly, both Roger Ebert & Gene Siskel didn't like this movie, but, in my eyes, it was good... Not a timeless classic & a memorable role like 'The Mask', 'Dumb & Dumber', or, anything like that, but, an acceptable film.
I watched the cable guy so many times that the tape broke and my friend recently bought me the DVD for my birthday. it's my favorite movie. I watch it on repeat
I remember the last time I saw this movie. I had just laughed my ass off at one of the scenes because of its utter ridiculousness, I turned to my buddy and said, "who in the hell is this movie for?" He replied, "Us man, us." And he was right, I can't really explain it, but I've always had a fondness for The Cable Guy.
+Alejandro Silva I can admit as a geek and a lozer very few people respect i may have some of the qualities nc described oh no im sort of the cable guy
I absolutely love this movie I loved it when it first came out as well. I find it remarkable when you realize all of Jim Carrey’s lines and names were used in sitcoms and sitcom situation’s catchphrases etc. Ben Stiller served us a masterpiece
I think this is one of Jim Carrey's best roles. "Chip" was a goofy, eccentric character who also had his dark moments.

Pre-video:
People hate the Cable Guy??
Yea.. I always loved seeing dark Jim Cary, but it wasn't scary-dark, it was funny-dark.
Valpas Kankaristo ya, it was like if Jim Carrey played the Joker!
I would kill to see that.
Valpas Kankaristo There were 69 likes... Sorry, I liked it and it's now 70!
Are you from Finland? If you are....... moi mitten menee
I was looking for a carry comedy, and watched this. It’s an amazing character study about what would usually be an over eager side character in a sandler film.
This is actually my favorite Jim Carrey movie. It was way ahead of its time, audiences weren't ready
One of the best Jim Carey films, along with eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
+d. allen spencer This Trueman show and The Mask is my favorite Jim carey films
Yeah, I did forget about those also the majestic
Not one of his best but it definitely isn't a bad movie in my opinion. It would probably be rated eight in my top ten list.
I like this movie and never hear that it been hated Oo
I know right? I thought it was just critics who hated it and fans praised it? lol
+Andriano After looking through the comments section I feel like this videos title could actually be really wrong lol.
+Andriano I had heard of it, but I didn't hate it myself. It WAS different than what we were used to for Jim Carey, but it's not a bad movie. It's possible people wanted to laugh because it's Jim Carey, but didn't think stalking was funny.
+Andriano same ;;
+Andriano Cable Guy is in my top 3 for Jim Carrey movies
I like The Cable Guy. I think people didn't like it at the time because he jumped off the diving board of slapstick comedy to dark comedy. He was trying to break the typecast mould. He eventually did break the typecast mould with The Truman Show, Spotless Mind, and some others. As an artist trying to break the mould I have to hand it to him. And as a dark twisted comedy its not bad, if dark and twisted comedies are your thing.
That’s one of my favorites! Too funny. One of Jim’s best! “Am I really your buddy?” 😂
KingofSting19 I agree with everything you said, cept for his performance in “sunshine of a spotless mind.” He was fucking AMAZING in that movie.
I was very surprised when i found this was one of Carrey's most hated films. Its one of the firsts that really got me into his movies. I love it! It being of his most hated movies, would have been the LAST thing i would expect. This is one of my favorites of all time!
Can you believe that Zoolander has TWO stars on Netflix? Me and my whole family where shocked
Yeah that's insane, Zoolander is hilarious. I'm so glad it's getting a sequel
People have no taste! That movie was hilarious!
most people react negatively to goofy comedy.
+BoringMan not only that but Comedy is very subjective. There are so many different variations and some just aren't to everybody's tastes.
Netflix's rating system isn't based on everyone else's rating, it's based on how the system thinks YOU would rate it. That being said, if you love it, not sure why it's a 2.
I just watched this movie for my first time today. I have to say I find it to an excellent film! 8/10, one of my favorites!
+okagron I remember that too; it's funny the Simpsons also had a similar episode plot where Homer gets clingy BFF with Ned Flanders.
+ShadowBlazer3000 Neddy, NEDDY!!!!
+Horatio Huffnagel *slowly backs into bushes*
I think you misunderstood, Doug. I love "The Cable Guy", I HATE *LARRY THE CABLE GUY*
This movie is a certified comedic classic! Easily one of Carrey's best!
This is by far my favorite Nostalgia Critic episode. I was one of those people who thought the movie was too dark. After I saw this, I immediately wanted to see it again. I now regard it as one of my favorite movies.
This is actually one of my favourite Jim Carey movies I guess you have to be a true Jim Carey fan to get like this movie he is really funny
no true scottsman :P
didnt he win an award for this movie? Best villian or something?
Marcus Machado thank you for commenting this I totally agree
its more of a fan of dark comedy which people and critics at the time wanted carrey to be a one trick pony
I liked the move when I hear the name Stephen I can't help thinking of Carrey doing that lisp Shhhtephen.
Honestly one of my favourites, the movie is underrated and hilarious imo, I love the karaoke scene
I saw this in theatres. I loved it then and I still love it now.
Next editorial should be "Disney bought Marvel: Why are we still mad about that?"
+K Damon Correction: *That's why we are still mad about that!*
+victoria martines But why? Disney has done better with the Marvel IPs than Sony or Fox had up to the point that Disney bought Marvel. Fox is doing better with their licenses, but that seems more in response to what Disney has done; Sony is still sucking with their licenses though.
+Scott Sandler
Dude, he gave almost all that money away to charity.
I also felt it was ahead of its time
Truly an underappreciated black comedy. It doesn't deserve the hate.
I love this movie a lot this is Jim Carrey funniest movies hands down 10 out of 10
This is one of my favorite comedies ever. I’ve loved this movie since I saw it for the first time in theaters.
It's a great movie, it was just 10-15 years ahead of it's time. If it had been released in 2010 it would have been widely acclaimed IMO as great social commentary about how technology is being perceived into turning us into zombies.
The Cable Guy was underrated as fuck! So many hilarious moments!
I even prefer this movie over Dumb and Dumber :)
Agree. It's my favourite Jim Carrey film too.
From the moment I left the theater after watching The Cable Guy - until now - Its been my favorite Jim Carrey film.
Great messages too about not watching tv so much and getting out more once in awhile!
I loved Cable Guy?! I thought it was hilariously dark, the brutal humor is just so entertaining. I seriously want to see Jim Carey in more comedic horror or dark comedy films!
Me2
I think Carrey did a great role with this, hell I felth sorry for him.
I WATCHED IT SO MANY TIMES AT MY FRIENDS HOUSE HE JUST GAVE MY THE TAPE! I LITERALLY SAW THIS MOVIE AROUND 30 TO 40 TIMES! IT RULED! I NEVER THOUGHT IT WAS DARK, IF I'M BEING HONEST I THINK THIS MIGHT BE MY FAVORITE JIM CARREY MOVIE IT'S LIKE A 3 WAY TIE.
ikr ive seen this so many times lol i dont get the hate for it
I always loved this movie even as a kid. I didn't quite understand everything younger but the older i get the more i enjoy the cable guy
This is still one of my single most favourite movies, even when I first watched it as a kid.
Whenever I catch it on tv I just watch it till the end.
Wait... Matthew Broderick isn't THE reason to hate The Cable Guy?
+pharaohyami5000 if it was then the lion king would of suck
If that's the logic then we should also hate Ferris Bueller's Day off.
The real question is...
how can the plot be centered around someone clinging/stalking mathew brodric?
+Alex-Zander Browne Ferris Bueller is one of my favorites
+pharaohyami5000 yep
I saw this movie and enjoyed every minute of it lol. Such an awesome and different take for Jim to devote to so much into this character lol 😂
I've seen this movie fully for the first time in my life last year and I really LOVED IT! It's a genius thing with a genius performance😍
I love this movie. I normally don't like Jim Carrey comedy but this is different. I just came out at the wrong time.
I personally love cable guy
+Master Aquas Fallen Apprentice So do i
One of my favorite parts is when they go out to eat at that medieval restaurant and end up fighting, hahaha. I fucking love that part. But yeah, this is just an all around great movie.
Whenever you say annoying you cut to the karaoke scene which for me is the highlight of the movie and the funniest scene in it, Jim Carey was great doing that song, I can't understand how anyone would think of it as annoying
+Jack Davids seriously
Totally, best bit by far :D
Siskel liked it,
i just went back and watched the mask, although i enjoyed the musical scene, cable guy is way better imo
PEOPLE HATE THIS MOVIE WTF?!?!?!? THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST FFS
Classic Jim Carrey role it's like saying the Truman show was bad
I watched the cable guy so many times that the tape broke and my friend recently bought me the DVD for my birthday. it's my favorite movie. I watch it on repeat
What did he refer to as juice in the movie?
It's an underrated masterpiece. It was a mirror into the general public's souls.
Cable guy is far from bad
More people hate Channel Awesome than hate The Cable Guy.
LOVE THIS MOVIE
I remember the last time I saw this movie. I had just laughed my ass off at one of the scenes because of its utter ridiculousness, I turned to my buddy and said, "who in the hell is this movie for?" He replied, "Us man, us."
And he was right, I can't really explain it, but I've always had a fondness for The Cable Guy.
Man i loved this movie in the 90s. Never understood the hate.
oh my god!!!!!
I AM A CABLE GUY!!!!!!!
(not the work, the stalker thing the nc was talking about
+Alejandro Silva I can admit as a geek and a lozer very few people respect i may have some of the qualities nc described oh no im sort of the cable guy
I swear doug used this song in the background in another editorial
It was in his kids shows getting better video
What's the name if it?
+Joe Olson I can't seem to find this song.
The Cable Guy was awesome lol
I absolutely love this movie I loved it when it first came out as well. I find it remarkable when you realize all of Jim Carrey’s lines and names were used in sitcoms and sitcom situation’s catchphrases etc. Ben Stiller served us a masterpiece
I love the music in the background! It's awesome
Tengiz Natsvlishvili what is it?
Yea definitely don't be like Cable Guy, you could end up in a correctional faciluluty.
Yandere? For Ferris Buler?
The Cable guy predicted online gaming. Crazy or prophet? Lol
No, online gaming was around long before this film.
The online gaming already exists since Multi-User Dungeon 1
watching this in 2020 and knowing that You, a tv show where the main character is a crazy stalker, is EXTREMELY popular and well loved is hilarious
i was pretty young when my dad showed me this movie and i looooved it. i couldnt understand yet why but its just a special gem.
Anybody else think jim carrey would be awesome as the Joker?
Sherlock lightning he'd be better as Joker than Riddler
How has this not happened yet !?
With the proper direction and script? I'd say he would be perfect
can you do a video on zoolander 2, please?
People hated it?????
I saw this when I was a kid in theater, it was great back then, and still is genius to this day
It's one of my absolute fav Carrey movies and it was when I was a kid in the 90's aswell :P
