I owe this movie. Back in high school, I was a socially awkward, under the radar type of guy. Despite this, I somehow managed to get invited to a party. Probably was just a right time, right place scenario. Anyway, I brought this movie to the party and popped it in the VCR. Of course, this got everyone's attention because who starts a movie in the middle of a party. However, the party goers would end up focussing on Jim Carrey's antics and go on to enjoy the movie. After it was over, some of the other kids ended up talking to me for the rest of the night. Made some good friends that would go on to help me build my social skills.
TLDR; No one cared who I was until I put on the mask.

I want to point out milo the dog who towards the puts on the mask himself and protects Stanley, giving reference to the loyalty of a dog but he also lets loose with the rules Stanley gives him (no jumping, no biting, be a hecking good boy). I wish they would've incorporated Walter from the comics in some form in the film, or even a sequel. He's a very interesting character in that he's the one person in the whole comic whom the mask DOES NOT WORK ON. Yet he himself is strong and durable enough to go toe-to-toe with a mask-wearer and survive. In other words, he DEFIES THE TOONFORCE!

The Taz pillow in the first shot with the spinning transformation is what it was driving at; he's becoming a caricatured cartoon version of his inner desires because that's what his escapist fantasy is. The mask is using the individual's latent desires to manifest itself and that's the whole angle of the Trickster God.

    • @Ignasimp
      @Ignasimp 3 роки тому +2

When he transforms spinning, there is a picture in his sofa of the Tasmanian devil which also did a spinning similar to that. That might have been the inspiration for it.

A comic adaptation would be great but damnit, Jim did such a good job in this movie. I know he’s a bit out there now and depressed, but his documentary (while some may disagree) had me kind of respect him as an actor. To embody someone like that is taxing not only for him but for everyone around. And the way I see it, it was for a damn good reason. But that’s just my opinion folks. Y’all have a good one and a happy thanksgiving! Peace!

Absolutely loved this. It hits nuances I never thought about as a kid or even now as an adult. Its always been a fascinating film to me. The kid in me loves the idea of cartoons coming to life but enabling one's power fantasy doesn't mean gratification always struck me as an adult. There was always remorse, anxiety, and fear after a night on the town in Stanley's eyes. It felt good and that is what scared him. This take on what the mask is as opposed to the Id theory is refreshing and gave me a new appreciation for the film. You got a sub!

The film, which I saw when I was a kid, got me into the comics when I was near being at the age of 18, which I currently am that age, I sort of wish there was a version of the mask that is like the comics, I know it would have to portray some scenes differently since some things work better visualized than discredited but as long it has the rather dark and cynical spirit as the comics, I do not mind.

I have a theory that Peggy was originally supposed to end up with Stanley...and that's why her betrayal comes off so abrupt. Tina (like the Mask) represents the unhealthy fantasy we crave while Peggy (like Stanley) represents the good sensible life we need. Throwing the mask away at the end makes a lot more sense if he ended up with Peggy (i.e. Stanley is rejecting fantasy).
But after seeing Jim and Cameron's chemistry, I feel like the studio/director ordered a last-minute rewrite to put them together. Also, Diaz's charisma and sex appeal is just off the charts in this movie. The more she's featured, the better.

Really good analysis! I’m the rare person who loves both the Mask and Son of the Mask (look, it appealed to me on a personal level that’s almost scary) and I appreciate your look at this first here.
I suppose I have some different thoughts via why the mask is Loki’s though. Saying Loki is self-interested isn’t untrue but all the gods were famously self-interested. I think Loki is the creator of the mask because Loki himself is an outsider trying to impress the group in which he wants to belong - which is what Stanley is. Loki does that by giving gifts to the Aesir and doing great deeds for them, but often only after he’s screwed up and hurt them, or in anticipation of their wrath. He’s playful and chaotic and fun but also exhausting, and also capable of other personalities that are more negative and wrathful, like the villain. The Mask is different for every person who wears it, giving it many forms, but ultimately it unleashes a trickster who flouts the conventions of society (and reality itself) in pursuit of power and popularity and love.
Once Stanley has achieved love and acceptance, he has to let the mask go because ‘Loki’ and the mask itself is never satisfied - it can’t stand still and be in the moment. It’s always trying to transform and change and impress and entertain - it can’t be itself, ever, because the Mask is a performance. Loki knows his true self would never be accepted by the gods so he’s always performing something for them, whether that’s making them laugh as their court jester or giving them cool toys. Stanley, however, is at a place of self-acceptance and can continue on without performing as someone else.
You make the point that people are too petty and selfish to truly use the mask’s reality-breaking power to affect real change and become whatever they want, but that’s the flaw of the mask - it can’t be anything other than that. It’s a tool for performance, not truly changing reality. Stanley has to do that himself.

You've done an amazing job looking into how the theme and narrative of the Mask movie actually stays true to the theme of the original comics it was based off of while of course not being as gory and violent. It does bug me a bit seeing some people say that the movie is a butchered first attempt at an adaptation of the comics when in truth it actually did. That being said I'm very much for seeing a rebooted take on The Mask that's closer to the comics in the future especially with Newflix and Dark Horse teaming up to make more adaptations of Dark Horse comic stories.

On the money as always Ryan. I was 8 or 9 when I saw it at the cinema and absolutely enamored by Carrey's performance, so much so I went again the next saturday with my pocket money. It was only through a further viewing in my early twenties that I started to scrape into the theme you gouged. I also hadn't realised till then ('cause of the internet) it was based on a comic. until now I have had no inclination to read it but after watching this I may have to reconsider.

I dont remember if I've commented already however, in the comics (yes stanley is a POS) the user doesnt have control over the mask, the mask forces chaos to come from within the user, it takes their desires and forms them for it's own evil wants, the litteral next comic is about the detective taking the mask and killing a bunch of gang members saying he cant continue to use it because "hes not big head" theres a bunch of little things in the comic series I think you should look into. Still absolutely amazing video, (as always) and please, keep up the good work

I remember my mother taking me to the theater, after a HARD night of soliciting,to see this when I was 14 or 15& it was a quite the engrossing experience!!! Very intriguing how our main antagonist of the film is a pazest artifact of sorts that folds in the hands of a hopeless romantic and a want to be crime Lord who has boss issues lol I liked how the film played on the audience assumption like you think our protagonist will end up with the journalist lol if I had a 50 favorite of all time, this would definitely make the cut :-)

I remember I watched this as a kid in school. I think it was the first film I seen Jim Carrey in. One of my favorites.
Hilarious . Used to scare the living shit out of me as a child but as an adult I was laughing my butt off.

I think it would have been better If they really comitted to him being the Villan instead of the Hero at the end... Ipkiss isn't really better or less creepy than the people around him (yes idk the Comics, i mean the movie)...but the movie doesn't really explore that

  • @martinward1639

I like that the mask in a sense is a fake copy of yourself. When anyone wears it they become there DREAM self but one guy is in most control. For example the main villain is to believe to be dangerous and strong but in the end he's powerless, he's just seems powerful cause he has people but when the mask is on he becomes stronger and more bulkier and when it's off he is a dog with all bark but no bite cause he's depends on the mask, so it controls him. Our main character is the opposite, instead he's all bite but no bark, he can defend himself he can get the girl and he CAN do things without the mask. It's just he THINKS that he can't so he let's everyone take advantage of him, and when the mask comes he does NOT want it that is why the mask stayed cause it was not use to not really being needed/wanted, so when he's puts it on HE has some what of more control over it that is why he was spinning, like you said cause was fighting back so the only way that mask could at least somewhat control was to make it seem like he was dreaming, and so more and more it would have him. But when he found out it was losing control he actually takes it off, that is why it hurted him when doing it so when he puts it on again for the last time he has full controll of the mask and when he's done the movie's ends he lives knowing that he Can be his real self. Sorry if you find this long or it was not what you were going with just wanted to put it out there.
