This movie really showed me what real horror was as a kid. It made me feel so uncomfortable. And to this day it still sticks in my brain. The killers seemed so real and that's what made it scary. Their actions were very realistic and they didn't seem to be super human or could teleport like some of our other favourite slashers like Michael. Horror films like this have been long forgotten and it's a damn shame.

    • @112523
      @112523 4 роки тому +7

sorry but these killers seem far from real. they make no noise but only when they want to. they go into a house that they dont know and seemingly manage to stay out of sight while moving without making noise except when they want to or when the plot demands it. not saying its bad that you enjoyed it. you do you.
but this movie pissed me off way more then that i enjoyed it. just a bunch of nothing happening and dumb decision making

I remember watching The Strangers for the first time at a friend's beach cottage a long time ago. And that made the film so much scarier. I watched plenty of times in my apartment and my families own home in the suburbs and it never had the same effect it did in that particular environment. I felt that isolation and helplessness while watching the film.

Me too! It's always been one of my biggest, unrelenting fears. But I am always armed with strong pepper spray, a blade or three, and weather permitting, steel toe boots. I also have some martial arts and self-defense training. I'm not a bad ass, but I'm definitely not the one that you'd want to put in to self-defense situation. I also keep things that could easily become weapons all about our home. After all, the firearms aren't always within reach.. The odds of being randomly assaulted, or becoming a victim of home invasion and violence, are relatively low where I live. But the fact that it's possible at all, is reason enough to be aware and be prepared, as well as possible!

I like subtlety in my horror; I think it’s a great way to build tension which I think is the key to horror. The building up pressure in your chest. The scene where Liv doesn’t realize the killer is behind her in the living room. She’s not realizing the impending danger right behind her. It’s one of my favorite single shots in a horror film. I also think home invasion is a great theme for horror. Someone’s home is their safe zone from the fears of the world and an invasion disrupts this sense of peace.

I loved The Strangers! It does genuinely spook me, considering I had gone through a situation where my house was broken into. No one was home, luckily enough, but you're stuck with that fear of knowing someone you don't know (or possibly do know) has broken into somewhere you feel safe - therefore making it feel unsafe. I think the idea of a home invasion is one of the most realistic fears there is these days, it's more common than we think and this movie did a good job illustrating that.

Oh my god, I remember this movie. It was incredibly disturbing to me when I watched it a few years back, and I think the reason for that was because it felt so random. There was no rhyme or reason as to why these people were chosen for a round of hide and seek and murder, they just happened to be home. It was one of the first movies that I remember feeling a sense of deep, existential dread after watching. It really got under my skin, and it was made creepier still when a few years later I discovered that it was based off of a real life crime (and not too loosely based off of it, at that). *shudder*

The eerie feeling portrayed in this movie is something I've dealt with. I moved from an apartment complex where I lived for about seven years, to a rural area. At the apartment complex, if someone was outside, whatever, they're just a resident. The complex was brightly lit, so on and so forth.
If someone is outside where I live now, they _REALLY_ don't need to be there. After having been in an apartment for so long, that adjustment period was brutal. Every noise had me on edge.

One night my exwife and I were chiiling, watching tv and talking early in the morning (like 2am) when someone knocked on the door. When I opened the girl asked “Is Tamara home?” I causally said “wrong house” and closed the door. When I turned she was stoned faced, reached out under the table and pulled her service gun, I inmediately realized this was exactly what happened in the strangers, turned off the lights and went to the room for my shot gun. When spent the rest of the night in the living room in silence and in the dark waiting. We lived in Ybor City Tampa. Some clown (s) thought it was funny. Didnt know we were loaded, locked and ready to roll. 😂😂😂. Over a decade later we still laugh at the night we spent in the dark waiting for the strangers to break in.

The helps play into the ordinariness.

The movie terrified me because I grew up in a wooded area that looks eerily similar to where this house is located. Realism is what makes this movie stay with you. The first half of this movie is a masterpiece.

I like the second movie because those bastards are killed off by people that fight back simply because for once characters were written a little more believable in that situation at least towards the end anyways which is why it was refreshing to see.

I'm honestly a little disappointed that you aren't a bigger fan of The Strangers! IMO it's one of the best horror movies because of how non-narrative it is. There's something scarier about someone wanting to cut you up just because, rather than some vaguely supernatural killer with some half-baked revenge subplot. Also the soundtrack is iconic. The scene with Joanna Newsom's 'Sprout and the Bean' is insanely well done and ratchets the tension up to 11.
Even without the entire killers plot, The Strangers is a highly effective emotional drama. The scenes with the two victims both pre-and-post horror elements are beautifully shot and well acted enough that I buy into their melancholy.
All in all I think The Strangers is a highly effective horror film. In terms of being a directorial debut I'd say it's about par with Donnie Darko. Both disturbing, odd, out-of-place, increibly brave choices for a debut and both handled deftly by their respective directors.

One of the best? Not a chance in hell. The Strangers is a horrifying concept (Because You Were Home) lost in a sea of Hollywood clichès like movie-dumb victims, like Glenn Howerton's character or Liv Tyler's and Scott Speedman's, and overpowerful killers.

This movie truly touched me. Liv Tyler’s raw innocence and Speedman’s acting prose totally took me by storm. They both felt REAL. It’s like, you think you’re making the “right decision” when in actuality you’ve made the wrong decision, which would’ve led you to the brighter outcome, had you followed your gut. Make sense? Nah! Didn’t think so. 🙃🙃

Other actors that have serious comedic chops that could throw a curve ball into an older horror you may not have seen:

Rainn Wilson in House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

Everyone wanting to be a musician back then is a great thing. Most people could write music and create art and play instruments. Unlike today where most people want to be influencers, the evolved version of the celebrities who were famous for nothing in the mid 2000’s. Now if you can work your angles and thirst trap in a photo you become an icon.

2:53-3:20 That kind of reminds me of a similar kind of terror used in the game Anatomy. Except that game turns that idea completely on its head by making the _home itself_ the threat as well as stating that _all houses_ are like this.

great video, me personally, this kind of horror never scared me much, as i grew up with a family of hunters, we keep guns in the house, easily reachable, theirs usually a gun, knife, hatchet or some other easily weaponized object within five feet of me if not closer, the fear and troubled this movie present however ARE very real and for some people this is an actual terrifying threat, but for people like me, while it is still a threat and should always be taken seriously, were not at their mercy and having to run, nor would we where i'm from, good vid ryan always enjoy your stuff, this is a good movie, and yes i JUST realised this is a three year old video
