Ryan Hollinger Tales from the Crypt Demon Knight. Billy Zane is the man.
My mom loves this movie and Ghost Ship, she was shocked that they were both directed by the same guy. Their both her horror guilty pleasure.
CUBE (1993) is one of my guilty pleasures
The remake of House on Haunted Hill!
Definitely Braindead - if you can call that horror...well I mean it's a body horror I guess.
I think Matthew's back might still hurt from carrying that entire movie
Nah no worries. The Juggernaut took care of his back issues.
@@Hayatehiroyuki25
oh damn
🤣🤣
@@Hayatehiroyuki25 oof! 😰😂
Like he’s been carrying most of the movies he was in. For real. Aside from Scream, he was the only guy giving interesting performances in SLC Punk, Senseless, Animal Room, Hackers, Dead Man’s Curve... so many movies he carried on his back entirely. Scream is iconic because the script is tight and it’s Wes Craven and everything else too, but without Lillard’s performance the entire last act would fall flat on its face.
Matthew Lillard seems to be one of those actors who gives it his all.
He's pretty humble from what I've seen as well
loved him in scream
He’s amazing in twin peaks
Good actor.
He really is. He’s so underrated in my opinion.
I love how Tony Shalhoub be lookin' like he literally just walked over from the set of Monk to the set of this horror film. Didn't even change costume.
The character design and backstory of the ghosts are by far the best part of the film. The Jackal still terrifies me till this day
Thir-thirteen-en Ghosts.
Also I saw the movie pretty much as soon as it came out on VHS. This was coincidentally right after I saw Scooby Doo in theatres. Being the stupid kid that I was, I didn't understand that actors play different roles and pretty much just assumed that this was the sequel to Scooby Doo and that Shaggy violently died right there. I cried for hours.
Erick Wright
I know how you feel. I used to have a dog named Caesar. When I was...three, I think? I overheard my mom ordering pizza and a Caesar salad. It was the first time I ever heard of it so you can guess where my mind went.
"They're going to turn my dog into salad?" 😢
Oof I watched scream after scooby doo when I was a kid and cried when Stu ("shaggy") died and thought that the reason why he killed people was because someone killed scooby
Erick Wright Hahhaa same here!
funny how Thirteen Ghosts of Scooby-Doo is an actual series
Erick Wright OMG poor you❗️
I love how EVERYBODY agrees this is a terrible ass movie, but *EVERYBODY ALSO AGREES* that Thirteen Ghosts is a goddamn masterpiece
its like the live-action street fighter of horror movies, its so trash its brilliant, and likewise has that one actor that saves the whole movie simply by existing in a scene. (odd that i never thought i'd be comparing lillard to the incomparable raul julia until this moment, but his performance is one of the film's great saving graces.) its just one of those turn off your brain and try to enjoy kind of movies.
me too..loved it as a kid..but its awful..but so good lol...
It's a perfect TV movie. It grabs you right away with the flash, and fuck it, nothing else is on and this is occasionally a blast.
Well said!!!
@@TheMichigami Lillard is one of Hollywood's greatest open secrets. After so many years in the business, I suspect he probably wants someone to tell the fucking secret at this point.
After seeing the special feature detailing the back stories of the ghosts, I was livid. It was so much better than the movie. I couldn't understand how it went so wrong.
Probably because it almost would have done better as a mini-series leading to the movie, people would be invested in the lore more I think?
Right, it’s like if you don’t watch that the movie doesn’t make an ounce of sense that it could have.
After seeing all the comments about the special features and the backstorys: I want to get the dvd JUST for that
@@Pippa87 I definitely recommend it, but you can probably find it some where on UA-cam without having to buy the DVD.
I think this would have made a really great game. All that lore, the way the house shifts and new ghosts are released over time? Brilliant game mechanic. The SCP games are a similar premise so i think it would have been popular.
Couldn't agree more, a Resident Evil-style gameplay system with different ghosts controlling different areas of the house and requiring different strategies to counter them could be awesome
Imagine a netflix show with 13 episodes each episode is about one of the ghost OMG
brilliant idea there!. I like this movie and love that idea for a show :D.
Epic !
Hmmm.
1.) Kinda like Love Death and Robots, each episode directed b a different studio?
or
2.) Each episode about a different ghost but with a connecting theme.
That will be awesome!....hey someone ....here a new netflix idea for a go!
"13 Ghost's why" Lmao
Matthew Lillard is an American treasure.
HACK THE PLANET!
@@theblocksays Only after we HACK THE GIBSON!
Well he was shaggy and played in the best horror movie franchise of the 90s Scream. The monsters in this were scary but the characters with the exception of Tony and Matthew sucked.
He is Shaggy’s one true vessel.
He can sing, too! He's in Kenneth Branagh's Love's Labour's Lost, all Shakespeare and 1930's Cole Porter songs! AMAZING
I love the black zodiac in 13 ghost. The stories of the ghost was the best part of the movie.
The lore was good. The symbols were cool.
I love 13 Ghosts and Ghost Ship. I don't analyze them, I just enjoy them They are two of my favorite campy horror movies.
peabuddie I actually find ‘Ghost Ship’ laughably enjoyable. It’s utterly ludicrous, but a guilty pleasure
Same
Ghost Ship has the best opening scene in any horror movie ever cmv
Hard Agree!
Ghost Ship is nice "turn off your brain and watch" movie cuz its so laughably ridiculous after the masterful opening
I agree with you 100% regarding Matthew Lillard. He’s the best part of this film and Scream. He always gives it his all and is great in every film he’s in, even if a film he appears in is garbage. He deserves to be put in better films, that way more people are able to see his talent a lot better. He knocks it out of the part in 13 Ghosts and has been pointed out by viewers and critics as being the best actor in the Scooby-Doo films he was in. I’d like to see Lillard get bigger parts in better films. He’s an actor who that has the caliber of an Academy Award winner or Emmy Winner, or at the very least nominee of both awards, if he just gets the right part in the right project.
He got a surprisingly fantastic cameo in 2017 twin peaks
Yup you can’t find him anywhere 😂
I totally and completely agree! Lillard was actually the ONLY reason I wanted to watch this movie at all. Plus, He was primarily the main draw I feel, Besides Marc Blucas (from Buffy the Vampire slayer series) and Wlmer Valderrama from that 70s show) That made Summer Catch somewhat the popular teenager movie it was.
Don’t forget slc punk
I want a movie with Matthew Lillard, Bruce Campbell, Al Pacino and Allison Janney. All the scenery will be chewed.
10:41 "He can definitely pull off a subdued performance when appropriate" Did you see Twin Peaks the Return? Matthew Lillard hit it out of the park and then some, his acting was unreal.
My favorite thing about this movie is that Juggernaut ghost is played by John DeSantis, who also played Lurch in the 90's Addams Family TV show.
he is also "The Bald Man" in A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix.
a true Canadian giant
I WAS WONDERING WHY THE BALD MAN LOOKED SO FAMILIAR!!
AAAAAAAHHHHHHH A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS ᵃᵃᵃᵃᵃʰʰʰʰʰʰʰ

@@francisg5207 Sounds good, just let me know when so I can dip out
I thought it was big cheesy fun at first; I loved the ghosts, I adored Lillard's performance...and then I learned the back stories behind the Black Zodiac. Good film or not, for that reason alone I bought the DVD.
I loved this film. Apart from the actual film part of it. The ideas, the designs, the ghosts.... it's like a film based on a brilliant horror video game, but they skipped the bit where they made the game. I'd play a remake. Or read a remake. I'd binge watch the Netflix remake, where each episode is the backstory of a ghost coupled with the lead up to the house being opened. So many better options than this.
Damn... put up a kickstarter for that idea. A backstory on each ghost before they were caught? Hell yeah I'd put in and watch that.
that sounds like a brilliant idea, a mini series of only one season with the ghost as protagonist in each episodes
Episodic game. The first episode has you play as Basilius (sp?) delving into the supernatural, playing through the events which lead up to his possession and writing of the Arcanum, and perhaps after his recovery showing what he did with the book and his ultimate fate. In subsequent episodes, you play as a police investigator trying to figure out what happened after the events of the film, gradually uncovering the supernatural events which occurred, struggling with your own disbelief in the supernatural and pressure from the DA or Chief of Police to find a rational explanation and possibly bring charges against someone. Each episode you focus on the history of one of the ghosts, allowing you to play from either their perspective, or someone closely involved with them during their lives. Some segments could involve visiting the ruins of the house to search for clues, or interviewing the survivors.
I'm thinking something along the lines of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem's style of game play and storytelling. Exploration, some puzzles, maybe even a little combat if the story warrants it. Some plot details could be changed up a bit as well, to keep the story fresh for those whom have seen the film and / or the bonus lore videos.
I think this is the only case where I want a remake, it has so much potential
As terrible as it is , i love 13 ghosts. The most brilliant part of this movie was the stories of the ghosts on the DVD special features. Just saying, that was amazing
i love 13 ghosts and always, never had the dvd though so i missed all that shit. hopefully i can find it on the net. theres gotta be a site or something with all the best special features from that era. i sweaar most of the DVDs i had specials features than the movies themselves. i miss that. you dint really get those in the digital age, or at least not that much.
The special features were my favourite. I don’t have the DVD but I wish I did. Me and my sister never stop watching it. It’s just interesting and it gives a good look into the ghosts. The little boy is my favourite ghost
@@kingvincentarchcravenxiii1141 I think youtube has it. I remember rewatching the dvd stories of the ghosts. It still creeped me out.
@@paweeeeee4201 thanks for the reminder. i was just looking for something to watch. yea i would thhink someone wouldve uploaded it to youtube. movie studios dont seem to care when it comes to that stuff
A movie that would've been a better video game.
The backstories for the ghosts are such a great add on it made me love the movie even more
Ghost Ship is my horror guilty pleasure! 🤣🤣🤣 I didn't realize the same guy from 13 ghosts was involved.
Honestly with the amount of details they went into the backstory for each Ghost, they literally could make 13 separate prequel Ghost movies about said 13 ghosts, seriously, all the points you made were literally why I love the ghosts of this movie more than the characters.
Blue_Rosa _art Thatd be great for a Netflix series. I’d watch it
It would be an interesting series...their backstories, how they got captured, if they ever got to know each other, and, if they did, how they interacted...
Yes the ghosts did have a lot of detail in their individual lore this movie is indeed a guilty pleasure of mine though the ghost lore was what draws me in
And became a ghost avengers kinda movie
@@AlexEndorian I keep biting myself on whether or not they’d talk.
Because seeing them interact through gestures and signals (like the Torso imitating the riding of horses with his fingers to connect with The Firstborn Son, who was a cowboy enthusiast) would be entrancing, but at the same time it’s hard to build a wholely mute narrative.
I’d also be interested in a more flawed and less angelic spin on Jean/Gene’s character. How’d a normal woman be able to handle herself in a world of seductresses, serial killers, asylum convicts and circus freaks? Would she be a victim or a helping hand?
Eight Legged Freaks is one of my biggest guilty pleasures, I loved it as a kid and I still love it, it has terrible CGI and is dripping with early 2000's cheese but god I love that dumb giant spider movie
There were dozens in the early 2000s - I also remember Arachnid and there’s a great 90s Jeff Daniels flick called Arachnophobia - both seriously, fuck spiders!
I absolutely loved and was terrified of Arachnophobia, the image of the house being covered in hundreds of ACTUAL huntsman spiders haunted me. Lots of scenes from that movie haunted me.
Dude when the old man puts on his slippers!
I saw that film with my grandmother as a kid and I had a blast with it even though I have Arachnophobia.
Morbid Bunny used to be my favorite movie and I was about 7. I guess it stuck with me and I still love it :)
I can never look at "Tony Shalhoub" without seeing "Adrian Monk".

I probably watched the ghost files on the special features more than the movie itself, I really liked the lore of each individual spirit.
House of wax is such a guilty pleasure for me
Cecilia Mayora You mean the remake? Because if you do I agree I know that it's not good but I just enjoyed watching it so much.
Hanabi199823 exactly, the one with Paris Hilton in it haha. Haven't watched the original though
The original is mega fun. Would recommend
@@lunalluna9401 one of the taglines i saw for that movie was "watch Paris die". So i did.
YES. I remember this being a fun caper of a horror film but could never put my finger on what felt wrong with it. I think you hit the nail on the head - Matthew Lillard should have been the protagonist. My other issue with the film looking back now is the stereotyping of the nanny. If her character breakdown said anything other than "sassy black hired help" I'd be astonished.
Anthony Bacon I wish they'd remake it but delve into lillards character hunting all the ghosts with cyrus
I contend that Lillard's character is actually the 13th Ghost...given he selflessly shoves Shalhoub behind the glass to protect him and faces Hammer and Juggernaut on his own. Arguably, you can say it's an act of love for your fellow man, not to mention that Shalhoub is the only person who's actually tried to be kind to Lillard.
I love House on Haunted Hill remake, Ghost Ship, and Thirteen Ghosts remake. For HoHH, it was some of the actors that made the movie great for me. With 13 Ghosts, it's definitely the lore and Lillard as Dennis. As for Ghost Ship, it's the soul collector thing. If these movies had done better and came out during the whole cinematic universe craze, maybe we could have seen a 4th movie that links the 3 together since all three were distributed by Warner Bros. I mean, I guess someone could still do this with the movies in their current form if they were able to convince WB to give them a chance.
They are my favorite horror movies. These three were the first times I actually enjoyed a horror movie.
*I can't believe they killed off Shaggy*
Love your channel. I was just thinking about this movie a few days ago haha
Nice to see my guilty horror pleasure on my other guilty horror pleasure's channel
I love your channel, nice to see you here 😁
ReignBot !
Omg! Reignbot, I love you
ReignBot
Would you ever do a review on it
I often rented this on dvd as a kid. I remember watching the bonus features and backstory stuff again and again, thinking it was much more interesting than the actual movie.
My grandma bought it on DVD and let me borrow it so much that it was basically mine and I'm pretty sure I've watched the backstories more than the actual movie.
Big fan of how much more angrily Irish you get around the 2:43 mark.
Maze house, Deep lore, 13 unique monsters that have great wasted potential. This sounds like a great horror game concept.
Bro, get some of the guys making PT-alikes to make a 13 Ghosts game, brilliant idea
I absolutely love the Saw franchise. Such a big guilty pleasure!
First film is a genuinely great piece of storytelling! Sequels, absolute nonsensical fun.
Ryan Hollinger I absolutely agree. A video about loss of quality through sequels could be cool
I so agree! Some of the Saw films are so ridiculous but I love them so much!
Hey, same here! I actually haven't seen the first one yet, though I know it's the actually good one, but I love how fun and kinda stupid the sequels are. Jigsaw's actually my favourite - it tosses out a lot of what made the original series unique, but it's a much smoother popcorn flick because of it.
"A truck full of blood? You gotta be shitting me."
I'm really tempted to re-watch this now. Keep up the great work!
“Bait?! We’ve never needed bait before!” ... makes no sense. I love it.
It makes perfect sense!! What do you mean!!?? The other ghosts were... wait... it makes no sense...
I truly wonder if you cut out the jump cuts with the white flashes if the movie would be scarier.
This movie and ghost ship were my all time favorite when i was a child, even my sisters and me used to play "guest the ghost name" using their descriptions
All I remember about 13 ghost was that when I was younger I was dead set on believing that the Jackal was Whoopi Goldberg.
where’s the lawyer? did he split?!?
Los Montana that was the worst punch line ever😂😂
God damnit.
maybe, 2 sides to every story though.
Tremors was my favorite horror guilty pleasure. I just love how goofy it all is and i love the ways the characters deal with the monster. Some of the sequels were hilarious, too
The sequels are surprisingly very good!
i didn't know they were horror movies until someone straight told me. and i still had to check imdb to confirm it. i thought it was a comedy start to finish.
nothing to feel guilty about... Tremors is awesome, looking forward to the TV series they making
Bramble b The TV series got cancelled. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(
that sucks...
Didn’t know Shaggy dies during one of the gang’s mysteries
raaaggggyyyyyy!
The Frighteners with Michael J Fox is one of my guilty pleasure faves
Absolutely!! Glad there's others out there that still appreciate it.
Yeahh there's a lot of good in that movie. Wouldn't call it a horror, but definitely one of the better dark comedies.
Yessss! It’s one of those movies that makes me really happy
This movie is one I always liked for some bizarre reason
Exactly. It has some kind of strange, likable quality to it.
"Did I say there is a petting zoo in the basement? No. There are Ghosts, in the, basement."
It was great cinematography, had eye candy and it hit the nerve of time.
Also Jason Jones, goats?
I still love this movie..it cheesey as hell but the stories behind the ghosts made it for me. like i got so invested.
I’m with you on this whole thing...but I go hard for Ghost Ship too. Do that one next if ya don’t mind 😘
whitney hedrick yes do a video on ghost ship please!!
whitney hedrick YOU, are drop dead gorgeous
whitney hedrick That mudvayne song at the end of ghost ship :)
Hell yea, I loved Ghost Ship as a kid. I only recently found out how much shit people give it. The opening scene is probably my favorite of any horror film.
That opening is fucking brilliant tbh
Mathew Lillard is an amazing actor who doesn’t get talked about enough
He’s a fucking gem.
💯
I always really loved thirteen ghosts and ghost ship, didn’t know they were by the same person. They both really had so much potential that was wasted but I still enjoy them.
Constantine. I guess it’s a guilty pleasure because the Rotten Tomatoes score is sooo bad bad but it’s seriously my favorite comic book film tied with the Dark Knight. Why the hate??
toriloveSubarukun for real, its good, its just so much different than the comics and anything that came out at the time, nobody was down wit it
I know, right? It's a good film wtf
Generally I notice, Critics enjoy movies I don't. ;)
except its not badplaatsen
Well I don't mind the movie on its own but Hellblazer comics are way superior and better :/
I liked this movie more than I expected, and I cried when Lillard died. I love him too. I also I loved the funny quips like “Did the lawyer split?” I am not sure why, but I find those kinds of things hilarious, probably far funnier than they actually ARE.
I would _love_ to see _Ghost Ship_ and _Thir13en Ghosts_ adapted into a comic book franchise or shows set in the same universe.
Now I wanna see a video with your impressions about Darkness Falls HAHA
Ha ha ha same here I actually was going to put that down as my horror guilty pleasure.
To be honest I quite enjoy Ghost Ship, and Darkness Falls. They are perfect for what people would consider a cult following xD

I think my guilty pleasure would be the first Wrong Turn movie
What about the second one? That's like a perfect maelstrom of terrible

Favourite horror guilty pleasure? The Final Destination series.
Yes, even the fourth one (which was pretty bad).
I think the first instalment is really good. It got decent reviews when it came too, as it was considered a smart take on the slasher formula that blew up in the aftermath of Scream.
TheHitherto I agree. The second one is also pretty good as well in my opinion. The other three after that I feel are a bit hit-and-miss unfortunately.
Agree. My biggest problem with the sequels is the escalating gore which seems to be aiming for horror-comedy, and the fact that it's difficult to care for any of the characters since it's become obvious they're doomed from the start no matter what.
SuperSand1egend agreed 1 and 2 are the best in the series but I have to admit I liked the ending to 5 with it being the beginning of 1 with flight 182 blowing up
Cruz Medina Flight 180
Killer klowns from Outer space
THE DICKIES! They did the soundtrack and are funny to see live.
As far as I'm concerned, that movie was just a fever dream I had with my brother when we were little and not an actual thing that exists.
Dude the 1st 15 minutes of ghost ship is awesome
I will be waiting for the William Castle video. It sounds like a great idea.
And I completely agree that this movies needs a better remake by a really talented director.
Cabin in the woods or Tucker and Dale vs. evil is my guilty pleasures, even though I don't have any guilt about them. It's the self awareness I love.
Grave encounters is my serious horror movie guilty pleasure. The twist in that movie was god damn awesome, and I actually felt scared and sorry for the cast.
Daniel Nodland yaaaaas grave encounters is amazing!
Cabin in the Woods should never be a "guilty" pleasure. That movie was made to be exactly what it is.
I like to think of Tucker and Dale vs Evil as a underrated film than guilty pleasure.
Can't be a guilty pleasure if you don't mind people knowing.
They can't really be guilty pleasures though as they're both self aware parodies of a genre and neither do a bad job of it.
But where’s the House on Haunted Hill (1999) video?? 🙏🏻
I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS I'M ADOPTEEEEEEED !
10:24 What's hilarious is that the only thing at all I remember about this movie is Matthew Lilard and some random junkyard scene.
Mine is Event Horizon...that movie disturbed me so much as a kid!!! My friends dismiss it as campy and predictable...
I think Event Horizon is fairly decent horror film. I saw it back in the 90s when it first came out. Apparently the studios forced a lot of editing and the original film was a lot more gory and brutal.
This movie terrified me as a kid, I don't know why? I grew up watching loads of horror movies and the only two that actually scared me was nightmare on elm Street and event horizon
I live Event Horizon, but I think it's partially because I view it as part of Warhammer 40k's universe
"What make you think I'll miss" -Sam Neil
I watched this the other week and it was such a let down! I saw it had great reviews and decent actors.... it was just tedious
3:06 that accent tho
Please don’t ask James wan to Remake these. He’s just gonna fill it with senseless jump scares and create a universe of spinoffs. His only good horror movies were the conjuring 1&2.
Hopefully Anabelle comes home will be a good entry into the universe that James is setting up! I'm excited.
What in the world are you living in mate? James wan is the one you search for in the modern era of horror. Conjuring 1&2 ? Doesn't want to count Insidious 1&2? Saw?
Jumpscare?? Lol that really where you went south. Wan did used jumpscare, but he use it RIGHT, doing it at a perfect timing, not just a cat jump out of nowhere/ a friend tapping you shoulder. Do your research before opened your mouth mate
I think his best were Dead Silence and Saw. Insidious was decent enough as well. I personally found the Conjuring to be too ridiculous and laughed through most of it. The rest of his films rely too heavily on jump scares or gruesome death scenes.
@@thecitizens4573 don't forget Dead Silence

When i was little like 4-5 i was obsessed with this movie and chucky and every day for hours i would force my parents to put this on a loop this movie is beyond intresting when you sit down and understand each ghost as well as put yourself in the thought process of what the chactors have and the emotions this is a movie that is good to get lost in
this movie is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. along with: house of wax, rose red, (flight) 7500, and triangle (the 2009 film to clarify). I suppose the animated film monster house as well, now that I think about it. there's just a lot of horror movies with a lot of potential to do well with neat ideas and visuals, but missed a few marks that would've made them great
ROSE RED?! Oh, you’ll love next week’s video!
Rose Red! Classic.
K.B. House of wax is amazing except for the fact a house like that wouldn’t last a day in new orleans
K.B. Triangle shouldn't be a guilty pleasure imo. It's a pretty good film.
K.B. rose red traumatized me as kid soon as the movie was over I had to check under the bed, that night had nightmares of Pam and the other chick all corpsed up
I have alot of guilty pleasure horror movies but Event Horizon is probably up there near the top
Event Horizon video is coming soon!
Event horizon isnt a guilty pleasure its a masterpiece
Event Horizon has an awesome premise and I love the ship. It was a movie that could have been great if done correctly.
Event horizon could’ve been amazing if the studio had left it alone. I hate that the studio practically destroyed it, but I still love the movie, but more for what it almost was lol
This is my horror guilty pleasure also and I find myself returning to it pretty often (actually, one of the very few movies I've watched more than twice). It has the bones of a good story so much so that every time I return I find myself hoping I've jumped into another timeline so it'll give me more. But even knowing full well that's not going to happen, returning is worth it for Lillard's performance in this movie. I'm so glad someone else can see that and also recognises him as their favourite actor because he's so under-appreciated lol. I'm so glad I found this channel! I've been binging your videos since yesterday.
Damn, now I need to rewatch this. It has been years since I last took the DVD off the shelf.
Please do a single video on Matthew Lillard, I just binge watched your channel the whole day
omg!!! yes! i LOVED 13 GHOSTS. i think people never gave it a chance
not only coke-edited, I found the audio mix almost assaulting
This seems like such an underrated channel, you deserve more subscribers! I'm glad this popped up on my recommended. Keep up the good work!
I will say this about Ghost Ship: The opening is one of the most brutal things I've seen in a horror movie, like "This is the sort of shit you won't un-see." Aside from that, yeah. Why hasn't James Wan done a remake, or at the very least Leigh Whannall? They'd be perfect to do that. Hell, even Alex Garland. If he can do to those movies what he did for Annihilation, oh, my God.
Forget Titanic, Ghost ship is the Reason I won't set foot on a cruise liner.
yeah thank you..as a kid ghost ships start scarred me while the rest of the film that I couldn't get through to cause it was so scary at the start but saw later on was ass...lame..that first set piece is brilliant
Yeah there's the meat hook scene that one got me still can see it vividly
the Hatchet anthology & thirteen ghost are my guilty pleasures 😂
thank you for showing us his second movie, i been searching for that one since i was a kid!
I'm glad you brought up the DVD extras. It was one of my fav little parts after being in love with this silly movie as a teen. Giving the ghosts all the extra backstory, in my mind, really hints that they are the official main characters.
Oh, I loved it when Adrian Monk encountered the Thirteen Ghosts. In this video, Ryan Hollinger gives us the "Here's What Happened."😊
I wouldn't really call it a guilty pleasure because I genuinely think it's a really incredible movie, but I will defend Samuel Bayer's remake of Nightmare on Elm Street until the day I die. The admitted aesthetic ugliness of it is a perfect reflection of Bayer's version of Krueger.
But if I had to go true guilty pleasure, Scott Derrickson's Deliver Us From Evil is a really interesting film that needs to be examined more. The mix of police procedural and supernatural horror doesn't always work, but when it does, it works really, really well. Also, best use of The Doors in movie history.
Deliver Us From Evil is great! It’s like a really intriguing police procedural with Eric Bana adding emotional depth to it. Joel McHale also brings some cheeky campiness too!
I keep meaning to re-watch it, haven't seen it since cinemas. Probably will tonight
Alextromagnetic I totally agree about deliver us from evil. I find it strangely re watchable. Can't agree about nightmare remake but respect your opinion and argument for it
Yeah it is an incredible movie for me. The atmosphere was intense & how the house was shifting all over is brilliant & give you some kind of unease feeling throughout. The ghost design is scary & I don't mind with the jump cut cause I felt that it really suits the theme pretty well. & the sound design is also nerve wrecking.. i know i give it a lot. Cause i love it so much.
The Nightmare remake COULD have been good, if it wasn't attached to such an amazing franchise. Let's not kid ourselves, it was no masterpiece. But had it not been attached to the Nightmare franchise, it would have at least been well received.
The problem isn't that it's a terrible movie - the problem is that it's a shit remake that didn't understand the source material. They tried to make it serious in tone when that's not what it's known for. They HAD to have known that most of the people watching it would be fans of the original, so they would've been better off going the Ash Vs Evil Dead route and staying within the same tone as the original series.
On top of that, they fundamentally misunderstand Freddy as a character. He's not a generic boogeyman. He's a charismatic killer who cracks jokes and takes pleasure in watching his victims squirm. There's something to be said for "creating your own version" but with an adaptation, there are some things you MUST not change. If he really wanted to create his own movie, he should have created an original IP instead of sullying Wes Craven's.
i love Matthew Lillard so much. Loved him to bits and pieces in SLC Punk, and he made every other movie he was in significally better than it actually was.
Just seeing this video now. I share so many of the same sentiments about this movie. It's a guilty pleasure for me too, and Matthew Lillard is a favorite actor of mine as well. I love him in Hackers, in this movie, and was so happy that he took over the voice work in the new animated Scooby-Doo movies and shows, since I have kids that love Scooby-Doo. Saw this movie when it hit the theatre since I already loved House on Haunted Hill (another guilty pleasure of mine) . My taste in horror has changed so much since this movie, but the backstories as well as the practical makeup effects will always make me go back to it now and again.
The ghost rights activist is probably the stupidest thing from the movie
Lillards performance has always reminds me of paxton in aliens.
Movie could have produced sequels or prequels.
All of their back stories could be turned into a miniseries and would be awesome, they should really do a Universe with this, the back stories were better than the movie although I love it
I remember owning this movie as a kid but I was always too scared to watch it, yet loved looking at the cover photo
the thing i loved about it the most, the sounds the ghosts makes, the atmosphere and of course the design of the set and the ghosts themselves. but damn the sounds man, i love em! especially the chants
Love the movie because each ghost is so cool looking. Never have I seen such fascinating concepts and designs for ghosts before and I want to know more about them. Now that you told me about the backstory video, ill definitely check that out.
Great video Ryan! I used to watch this movie all the time as a kid with my friends during sleepovers.
This is one of my favorite horror movies, so is ghostship. I love the story in both movies. There is so many feelings in them and it just suck me right in.
Watching this video unearthed memories from a long time ago. I haven’t seen this movie in ages but I remember watching it when I was younger and I loved it. Now I have to go watch it again!
You have a great way of breaking horror films down for critical review, I like your style!
My own guilty horror film? Digging Up the Marrow.
Jason X and Jurassic Park 3 are my guilty pleasures, but I don't feel remotely guilty for loving them. Are they bad movies? Yes, but they're on hell of a shitty ride and if you don't take them seriously as films or movies, they're unbelievably entertaining.
I never thought Jurassic Park 3 was that bad.
Hayley Weasley me too its Jason X & Darkness Falls
pretty much the same for me actually.
Argh.. Jason X. I had nightmares of Jason when I was a young lad.. then.. then that happened... robot nipples... nano tech.. bad quips.
Hayley Weasley - Why would you ever feel guilty for loving something? Let's be honest it doesn't matter what you like or dislike there will always be someone telling you how wrong you are.
Matthew Lillard is so awesome in everything and I really hope he does more work.
I never felt it as a favorite guilty pleasure, but I do remember watching the DVD, being intrigued, and then promptly becoming fascinated with all the lore that they decided to leave on the cutting room floor or in the "extras" menu. I agree, so many missed opportunities and interesting concepts. Nice work, man.
Mine are Jeepers Creepers 1 & 2
The 3rd one was just bad though :(
The director for the 3rd movie is a convicted child molester and even included a real molestation in the movie :(
NoNeed ForGreed
the writer/director for ALL of them is a convicted child molestor.. I'm pretty sure. cant remember his name right now
Why all of the sudden this fact is a thing now.... back when the first flick came out, it was a foot note...
I liked the first one, but in the 2nd one, the characters were so annoying that I just wanted them to die.
0o I Died In A Time Machine o0 victor salva
Uh... I really like all the Resident Evil movies. I know I'm in the minority but it's cheesy and all the explosions and by God I could watch Milla Jovovich kick zombies in the face for hours.
I love the Wesker fight scene in RE: Afterlife, when he throws his sunglasses and it goes into bullet time and you see Chris and Claire reflected in the lenses. It's so awful but so good.
What about the CGI Resident Evil movies?
That saga is very weird. It obviously doesn't care about the original story, but sometimes, in some events and characters it has some of the best videogame-film adaptions I have ever seen. Ada Wong and Wesker just to give an example.
I like the second one quite a bit, except for the ending. The rest were pretty shit though.
I love Thirteen Ghosts and Ghost Ship. My guilty pleasure horror is the remake of “When A Stranger Calls” with Camilla Belle. That is one of my favorites. I haven’t seen the original though. Most horror movies scare me too much to watch or rewatch. These 3 are about the only ones I like.
Thank you very much Ryan ive had this one scene from this movie in the back of my head for years but i never knew where it was from bc i was young and it was only one scene but now i can rest easy ive finally found the movie
Honestly, as a teen, I watched this with no shame and enjoyed it. This and Eight-Legged Freaks.
Jason Brown I watched both of those when I was 8. Loved em
Wow this is weird Ryan... I just got done watching this movie last night with my friend and his wife. She loves it so much and made me sit down to watch it. For a early 2000’s horror film I was pretty entertained with the practical effects and the cheesy story.
Thanks to this video my brain has made the connection, through Matthew Lillard, between 13 Ghosts and the live action Scooby-Doo films. On one hand, one of two films that absolutely terrified me as a kid to the point of week long nightmares (other being The Ring), and on the other hand a film where child me would sit and rewind the same fart competition scene over and over again until I was laughing so hard I was no longer producing sound.
i actually super love it when you talk about old horror films cause its just something not a lot of people do and opens me up to movies i may not have previously considered. I mean im way more likely to just go to the theaters or chose a cult classic over trying to figure out which movies from the 60s are good
My horror guilty pleasures are Thirteen ghosts, House on Haunted Hill and event horizon. I really wish the studio had left event horizon alone, it could have been a masterpiece of horror
I'm so glad to see someone else appreciates what this movie has to offer! I'd probly call it one of my guilty pleasures as well - I KNOW it's a weak movie, but it just hit so many satisfying notes for me. And yeah, Lillard impressed me with this movie. It's all about the scene when he collapses to the floor after touching someone, and with tears flowing, gently tells them not to touch him when they try to help. I was like, "Oshit, he's more than just a Jim Carrey impression - this actor has skills." Nicely done.
If I had to name another horror guilty pleasure of mine, it'd probly be... tough to do. Maybe the House on Haunted Hill remake?
I liked this film! But I also love Tony Shalloub
ive been watching ur vids all day foo! luv em
