Where did you put the grey electronic module ? I just retrofitted an Android Auto MMI (which has the same size and is pre-wired for a backup camera) in my 218d F46 and there is no space behind or under the original radio. I had to install it under the glove box and yet there is not much space.
@@prldoyle I removed the plate under the glove box. There is a hole on the left of this space, leading to central column of the dashboard, behind the CD player and the place under it where you can put stuff (sorry, I am looking for the proper english word). There, you can route the wires between the OEM infotainment system and the MMI device under the glove box. Bimmertech recently released an installation video inside an X1, which has roughly the same dashboard as the F46. But they put the MMI device behind the glove box, over the hidden fuse box. And yes, you have to remove as many things as in the video to do it. The part holding the ventilation shafts and the wood trim is very hard to remove, it is secured with metal clips. Buy an Android Auto MMI directly, it is not much more expensive than a "reverse camera only" device, and you can still add the reverse camera to it. Android Auto is a must have. The steering wheel controls and voice command work perfectly.
@@fabienpoupon8493 hi. Been researching the android mmi box. Does your car have an aux port, did you need to do anything with the microphone. Mine only has a usb port, but some say if there is no aux port, then you need to tap the microphone?
@@prldoyle I have an AUX port under the center arm rest and you should too (mine is a 2015 Business trim level, maybe the base trim level doesn't have the Aux port ?). On the F46, you will have to plug the Aux cable from the MMI box to the Aux port (hence you'll need to have the Aux cable go back outside the dashboard to the Aux port). I drilled a small hole in the bin under the CD player to route the MMI USB inlet and the Aux cable. And to have sound with the MMI, you have to select Aux as the audio source in the iDrive interface and to raise the volume to at least 20. By the way, you can still listen to the radio, CD or USB while using the MMI, but some commands will only work when you return on the iDrive interface. The iDrive NBT and the MMI are 2 independant infotainment systems that run parallel and independantly from one another. You won't need the MMI microphone because your F46 already has one. Just plug the Quadlock harness and the MMI will use your factory microphone. And don't forget to use your official USB cable from your cellphone or another with fast charge, so that it is modern enough to allow high speed data transfer from both sides. If you use a random USB cable, the MMI won't detect your cellphone. If you have a recent version of Android, you may be able to connect wireless to the MMI, which is way simpler.

I am looking at doing this on a 218d F46, Did you have to remove much more of the dash than shown in this video to fit it under the glove box?

Did you disconnect battery first?
When working on anything electrical, it is best practise to disconnect the electricity. Negative first!
