- Welcome one, welcome all to the best (worst) Warhammer 40k Darktide Review. This left for dead 2-like horde shooter set in the WH40K universe, released about a year ago, in a very bad state. Made by the Swedish Devs Fatshark (Owned by our Chinese Overlords at Tencent), who also made Vermintide 2. A game that also release in a very bad state. 1 year later Darktide has Improved a lot, but still has its issues.
This is not a good review, or quite frankly a serious review. For that i recommend Verac's Darktide Review.

I love this game, it’s been my forever dream to play/cosplay as a Guardsmen. Back then, I used to just spectate matches in Soulstorm and then picked a single Guardsmen in a squad, then zoom into him and lock screen onto him, basically making a third person shooter 😂 I would just act like I’m that Guardsmen in the middle of the frontline alongside hundreds of other Guardsmen, shooting at the charging Orks

Ogryns with a slab shield CAN make daemonhosts irrelevant by just tanking all of their damage - so everyone else can shoot it freely
I haven't met a single ogryn to do that in my games 😢

Totally agree on Grimoires. Completely worthless to pick up unless you want a challenge. I'd like to see it actually be useful. Like grant an extra Emperor's Gift at the end for every Grimoire picked up or give everyone a 15% damage boost for every grimoire picked up. Right now it just slowly kills you and grants you... almost nothing.
But yeah on release: Great game play loop, great gfx, great sound, everything else was horrible (story, crashing, optimization, more crashing, missing features, more crashing, everything is RNG, more crashing, did I mention crashing?). Now it's a very good game with some minor issues.
Combat spec vet with powersword and revolver is the strongest melee in the game. 91% crit rate on the revolver from killing 1 thing with a point blank build and 60% rending on crits. 25% damage and 25% attackspeed for 5 seconds after killing 1 thing with a revolver. Powersword mowing everything down with infinite cleave due to sunder. Near instant charge with the attack speed
Handcannon is a dead perk for vet unless you optimize your build around 1 shotting crushers its great for zealot but as vet just get more crit chance. You can use point blank if you use the right tree but surgical + crucian roulette is probably still better for that spec too
@nebei3740 @nebei3740 91% crit, I don't really need more but getting the 5% on the weapon and from the talent tree would make it 100% without surgical. Without it I can't body crit ragers or 2 shot maulers, it also takes crushers from 3 crits to 2. Point black is better than crucian because you get the full effect for 2.5 seconds, enough to mag dump, and synergies with weapon specs crit without having to stay at low ammo all the time. Surgical kills the dps, with powersword you still can do great damage to everything so just swap until you get a kill and chunk everything with the next crit barrage
@@whatwhat7119 if you dont 2 shot crushers get elite and crit dmg that enables a ton of breakpoints 2 shotting crushers and maulers is one of them
yea... 60%. Handcanon perk used to be 80% xD thats after the nerf, you cant oneshot ogryns on damnation+ now(you need 3 wellplaced head shots), its still strong dont take me wrong but yea its not as strong as it used to be. As for why take agile engagment. Would you rather waste 5 points on a useless keystones that basically does the same? or just take agile engagment? and vets keystones are really stupid imo. Even after the change, atleast other classes have keystones that impact them!, while vets get:
-stand still so you get crit multiplier(yes stand and build that stack on a finesse multiplier not a damage multiplier... ON A HORDE SHOOTER, for people who dont understand its when you get a yellow hit marker instead of white or red)
-you can paint target yellow instead of red now!! But WAIT! its gets even better! dont just point highlight them! wait for that stack to build up, so dont spam target highlight!
-take agile engagment... dont waste point on this its basically same... actually nah agile engagement is better. way better
also they moved superiority complex and bring em down to different Trees! and absolute travesty they moved tactical awareness one level down so now you always have 1 point short on getting things you need XD as vet. Can't have em all i guess xD.
You take onslaught, tactical awareness and bring em down, superiority complex along side rending strike and precision strike and now your autoguns and lassguns absolutely shreds through everything that it looks at. But in exchange your 2 grenades will(yes 2) is a glorified party crackers, cuz 6 stack of bleed brings pox walkers down to around 60% hp(incase u were wondering they have 300hp on damnation) and only those around blast zone gets killed(which is small) while your krak grenades no longer kill crusher in 1 go on damnation+.
OR THE OPPOSITE
where u go full melee and get all the nade buffs. and Use revolver, while shouting at ur allies and giving them shields xD and this can only happen cuz the guns are amazing and my lovely powersword
@dumbname1961 I actually only use 2 points on the weapon spec because I'm getting the 10% attack speed anyway. In exchange for 2 points I get 15% attackspeed 33% crit on kill an added ammo on kill and whatever else that doesn't matter. I also take agile engagement it's how I hit alot of break points. The only thing I regret not having is the 5% grenade chance so I get more shredder nades. I don't use krak because it only matters on monstrosities where as I constantly find situations where I need to get rid of gunner packs I can't peek for long or stupidly large groups of hordes that were hiding behind doors and I'd rather instantly deal with those than get rid of maybe 30% of a monstrosities health. Only the slug is an issue and it doesn't hone in on DH or I would take it for when I inevitably stumble upon it around a corner and it's too late to not make it upset.
This game changed gaming for me. Just because of how much I love Warhammer.

I love the gameplay and soundtrack of this game but.....
Currently the game just needs more "stuff"
Weapons, another class, missions, areas, bosses and hopefully another faction like genestealers or niddies.
Another thing I'd love to see is a spacemarine not even as an enemy ill take an npc on the morningstar.

Fatshark’s laziness is an utter mystery to me. Owlcat released Rogue Trader a bit less than a month ago, the launch was fine though not ideal, and they’ve been dishing out updates every or every other day since. I experienced a game-breaking bug one evening, I reported it through the game’s “report a bug” feature, and found the following afternoon that it’d been fixed.
Meanwhile, it took Fatshark an entire *year* to bring Darktide to where it should’ve been on launch. They treat PC players like scum even after beta-testing the game for a year-the “thank you” cosmetic pack is utter garbage and couldn’t be farther from an actually appropriate gift, penance cosmetics are way better-the game still features audio bugs I’ve been noticing for months now (“where the hell did that trapper/burster come from, I didn’t even hear it”), no basic quality of life improvements seen in some really good mods that will likely result in your game crashing, and the combat still feels strange because trappers, gunners, and snipers can shoot you from behind that pack of crushers, not to mention you can melee attack through objects. In addition to that, loading times between operative selection to hub and pre-game lobby to hub are still too long and I have the game installed on an SSD.
Like, is Fatshark an indie studio that lacks resources or what?
Fatshark has an inability to actually release a finished product. They knew Darktide was not ready to release and they did it anyway (Probably on daddy Tencent's orders) The same scenario played out with Vermintide 2. Fatshark make Good Game's, but simply need more time, and get better at community management. I again suspect this is based on Tencent's influence, like with Creative Assembly and Sega's Greed.
Rouge Trader is a good game, that also released in a wack state, but they didn't force feed me micro transactions intend of fixing the game. Owlcat has the same inability to release a finished product, like Fatshark, but whereas Fatshark sell a half-baked not finished broken game. Owlcat Sells you a Fully finished near 50-200 Hour game with no micro transactions with a lot of bugs that they very quickly fix. Still not perfect, but im willing to accept a hell of a load more BS from Owlcat than from good old Fatshark
beta tester here, playing since day 1; they don't treat us terribly, and the moebian twenty-first cosmetic pack is very well liked by a majority of people that I've come across using it, both in my random and lfg lobbies.
that said, silent trappers are definitely still an issue, but I have less of a problem with them seeing as how even a silent spawn trapper will make a noise before firing. this does not change on auric damnation or any other difficulty.

I made a review a couple of months in the game in which I mentioned that the game is fun, but if you want the "complete" experience, you should wait atleast a year until fatshark fixes the hame and lo and behold, I was correct.
The game is still missing some stuff like fixing curious and hitreg plus a year's worth of missing content due to fixing the game first but hey its fun

I just bought this game right after the skill tree updates, never touched the unfinished base game. I've been having a blast, one of the best horde shooters out there and I'm leveling my third class now
I'm a Guardsmen and would pick an Ogryn but he doesn't have a chainsword and bolter.
Wait I have to use my Lucius mk2 and snipe? But I always just use the bayonet like an actual guardsmen of Krieg and die instantly for the glory of the Emperor

It is certainly better optimised now, however the specs for Darktide is a lot higher than Vermintide 2, since it did release 4 years before Darkitde. So a "shitbox" like you described may not be able to play it :(

Unfortunately, you have personally offended the Mk4 Chainaxe, which I must say, to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the Mk4 Chainaxe. without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the mechanics will go over a typical player's head. There's also Mk4 Chainaxe's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into it characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance.
The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these mechanics, to realize that they're not just mechanics- they say something deep about LIFE. The Imperium is not united in anything, not even how they worship the emperor, and least off all, what abhumans are accepted and who is not. Also Ogryns are easy to tell apart, since the Guard use them so much, and they look very human just bigger. Would a Commissar half way across the galaxy know the difference between a Felinid and a Chaos worshipping Beast-man? No, he would most likely just execute them.
@@themayoman1752 You say that as if someone can choose to become a commissar, and not be chosen as an orphan child to be sent to a schola progenium and then ordanded that they are of character to become a commissar and because of that are given a much wider in depth education on the various abhuman auxiliaries of the various regiments that they will be assigned to, be it one that makes extensive use of ogryns, one that make use of Ratling scouts and sharpshooters, or perhaps being assigned to a night world regiment with a higher population of nightsiders, due to their enhanced low-to-no light vision, or perhaps to an aquatic world regiment with large number of pelagers to assist in water operations. But I understand, that isn't as fun as gauging the entire lore and vibe of a faction from the one panel "Heresy! Blam!" memes one can find on reddit

If Darktide was in this condition when it first came out, there would have been some grumbling about the lack of classes (4 instead of 5) and other such things but it would still be adored by the majority.
Unfortunately... it wasn't and the bad faith they created will probably never leave Fatshark.

It´s actually not true that there is no Story. More and More of what´s going on is revealed everytime the game gets an update.
Not just through missions but also Banter.
Also people seem to Forget....
Dan Abnett probably wrote the Story for the Entire Sector as well, since all this didn´t really exist in 40k in a tangible way before.
So if you think there is no story, turn your voicelines back on.

This isn't a crafting system, it's gambling for content. You want gear that doesn't absolutely suck donkey? Pray to the Omnissiah and hope they're listening and like you. Your base stats are RNG, your blessings are RNG, and your bonus stats are RNG. If you get two blessings and/or bonus stats that are junk, time to scrap it and start again because you can't do what you could do in their previous two games, and _reroll both_ . Base numbers are dog water? Scrap it before you even start.
Oh no you miss understand me, i never stated it would be a "good" crafting system.... and Fatshark certainly never promised a good system. The entire system goes from dull and boring at best to condensed misery at worst 😮💨

This is a gambling system that I'm fully convinced doesn't have a way to pay into it only because there would be a bloody _riot_ if they introduced that part when they finished it 6 months after launching the game.

No, It's bad storytelling and terrible writing. Warhammer is absolutely filed with random meat heads who simply are in the wrong place at the wrong time, but they still have Character. Bequin, Cain, Gaunt etc. All normal ass humans, (Blank doesn't count) who have great stories.
Im not asking for Mass Effect, Dragon Age or Last of Us levels of narrative experience, that would be ridicules. Look at Vermintide 2, at best an adequate story, at worst forgetful, BUT the characters themselves make up for it any day of the Week. Now Look at Darktide. Story is Completely and utterly forgetful, and the cardboard characters aren't much better. Now this is no problem at all, Its a Warhammer 40k game, I just want to destory heretic. Does it have a good story? Cool, not needed but its nice to have. But if you use Dan Abnett's name as a selling point for your game? If you reveal Dan Abnett as YOUR games LEAD writer.... If you Send Dan Abnett out to do tons of interviews to create exposure for you game... Well then you better deliver. Fatshark did not.

other than the launch problems, I really cant help but disagree with most issues people bring up
the store really isnt that predatory. it's quite cheap by most microtransactions standards and not only are you never told it exists, but it's out of the way too. not to say the shop is great, but it really isnt bad either, it's one of the better ones I've seen
the lack of premade characters really isnt a big deal for a couple major reasons: one, making a character vs playing a premade character are just two different things with different pros and cons, and two, the voices have very interesting and unique personalities and tons of unique dialogue so you really arent missing the characterization and charisma from Vermintide, frankly you have more since there's a dozen different characters instead of 5
also missions are actually quite varietous. the modifiers and the director do a great job keeping even repeat missions fresh and fun, while the randomized mission layout keeps the progression focused on the gameplay than on what feels like a campaign in Vermintide. it also ensures every mission is populated since you cant queue whatever mission you want with whatever modifiers you want offering way too much variety into the queue
