God damn, this is my favorite review of yours EVER. You hit the nail pretty much square on the head in every way. Deep Red is my favorite Argento movie and in my AT LEAST Top 10 favorite movies of all time, period. One thing that I really appreciate you pointing out are how the kill scenes are 'relatable'. As strange as that sounds, I completely understand what you're saying. I don't think it's even so much that we can actually RELATE to the injuries that we see happen, rather, its that the way we see these characters die feels so real that it is uncomfortable to look at. Take the bathtub kill, which you rightfully drew a parallel between it and the hot tub kill from Halloween 2. As much as the hot tub kill in Halloween 2 is memorable and terrifying, it doesn't feel real because it's shot from a 3rd person perspective, where as in Deep Red we are watching the death happen through the eyes of the killer. In addition, in Halloween 2, the victim's behavior is a bit unrealistic, there isn't any struggle when she is being held under, while in Deep Red there is a struggle from the victim and it makes it feel so REAL, and that to me is what makes the kills in all of Argento's movies so disturbing.
The other thing I would like to touch on is the score by Goblin. Just as this is my favorite Argento movie, this is also my favorite score of any of Argento's movies and is among my Top 5 horror movie themes of all time. You made a great point about the score though you said it rather subtly so as to not make it seem like you disliked the score. I believe you think that the score of this film overall isn't that scary, and if so, you're COMPLETELY right. Comparing the theme song of the movie to theme song of Suspiria is night and day, even though I like the Deep Red theme more, the theme to Suspiria is the most terrifying movie score of all time in my eyes. For me the score of this movie is more about being fun and catchy then disturbing. It's as though the film is sort of not taking what it is showing the audience seriously. And in a way, it makes the film more disturbing because music that could almost be equivocated with smooth jazz plays over people getting slaughtered, and it's like the film is saying to you: 'This happens in real life, this is already scary enough, it doesn't take the element of music in a movie to make this scary because its already scaring you.' I could go ON and ON about this movie, my love for it is infinite, but those are some big thoughts I had to get out there.

Thank you so much for watching man. Yeah the kills in Argento's films are much more impactful because of how close to home they feel. And I will say the Deep Red score is definitely one that will not leave your skull. I listened to it on my run this morning haha.

Blood and Black Lace is an earlier Italian Giallo film you should see. It's from Mario Bava and I think its crazy for something made in 1964. The killer is especially good.

I've seen all of Dario's movies, and Deep Red is one of his best. The one I always recommend to people is 'Sleepless'. It was a much later film (early 2000's) and his last great giallo. It has a really clever plot that keeps you guessing. great camera work, very gruesome kills, and a great performance from Max Von Sydow. A good documentary to watch is 'Dario Argento-an eye for horror'. I think it's on UA-cam, and in it John Carpenter talks about how Argento was one of his major influences. Well worth a watch. A great review too, by the way!

You'd be hard-pressed to name a horror film that so totally lived up to its reputation as DEEP RED did when I finally saw it for the first time a few years ago. It's one of those sublime cinematic experiences that's so visually and emotionally compelling that you want to watch it again the moment the end credits are done. We've all sought out one or more "classic" horror films in our day and come away wondering what all the hype was about, but I highly doubt anyone has ever questioned Dario Argento's brilliance after their first trip through this elegant, artistic masterpiece. Simply a perfect movie.

  • @georgeheilman885

It's also worth noting how Argento captured sound effects to enhance the kill scenes in his films, by stabbing or cleaving objects like watermelons or pig carcasses for the most organic sound possible.
Excellent review and a movie absolutely worth watching.

I gotta agree with you on everything. This is a masterpiece. Everything about this film is just so right. Stylish, hypnotic, violent but also really progressive for it's time. I love it.
Now I have to point out that Argento, while being the greatest one of them all, isn't the only one who directed gialli films(by the way gialli is plural for giallo). Lucio Fulci actually did some pretty good ones like Don't torture a duckling and (in my opinion his best film ever) The Psychic. But also you have the likes of Martino, the Bavas(father and son) and of course Argento's prodigy Michael Soavi who did Stage Fright, which is absolutely brilliant. I recommend you seek out some of their films. Arrow has actually a pretty good track record of releasing the best gialli you can find.
Anyways great review honestly. I love it when people give the film the credit it deserves.

Gialli is the plural for Giallo. Giallo is italian for yellow btw, the genre was named like that because the old pulp books often had yellow lettering on them. Dario Argento is my favorite director.

Thank you so much for reviewing this Lee! This is my favorite Argento film. I tried to get a friend into Giallo's, and I understand they are more of a slow burn and are not for everyone. My friend could not get into it. I'm so glad you appreciate Giallo films like I do. Dario Argento makes the most beautifully shot horror films. Argento is called "The Italian Hitchcock" and its easy to see why. Argento is a genius director. His films are definitely style over substance, and a master of tension and atmosphere. Deep Red was actually the second film of his I saw, after Suspiria. Deep Red is in my top 10 horror films ever easily. It is a horror masterpiece. What can I say about the amazing score by Goblin? This is my favorite Goblin score. I have a few albums that are Goblin soundtrack collections. Man I love Goblin! The main theme from Deep Red I taught myself how to play it on guitar. The twist at the end, when the killer is revealed totally got me the first time I saw this. Argento is a genius, that's all I can say. In so many ways the Italian horror genre along with Japanese horror genre blow American films away. Dolls and puppets don't scare me, but that damn puppet in Deep Red is creepy as shit. Great review Lee, I'm so glad you enjoyed this. I'll say it again Lee, you NEED to check out Argento's "Four Flies on Grey Velvet" and "Opera". I think you'd enjoy those immensely as well. Keep rockin man, you are the best reviewer on UA-cam. Take care, best wishes. ✌

Glad you like this one. Have yet to see the longer cut. Six minutes of new footage. Grew up with the awful VHS cut. When the widescreen directors cut came out, it was like watching a whole new movie. I feel this is Argento's masterpiece. Without Goblin, the searching of the house would not be the same. When I am asked or want to introduce someone to Italian giallo, Deep Red is the one that gets shown. Favorite sequences when the camera glides over the killers beloved fetish objects. That and the closeup up of the record needle playing the children's theme. This movie is packed with style and skill and it scares people to this day.

I've noticed most americans love Suspiria, but if you ask italian fans, most will say Deep Red is really Argento's masterpiece (I'm glad to see that's also your choice). I also have a soft spot for Deep Red 'cause it was shot in my city (Turin), and there are a couple of locations that I visit regularly: the galleria San Federico and piazza CLN, with the two huge fountains. Each time I swing by piazza CLN I just have to look up at the window of the first murder... the apartment was abandoned for a while, and there was no glass in the window, a pretty creepy coincidence, but recently there's been a renovation (that's not surprising, it's a pricey part of the town). Oh, and by the way... maybe you've figured it out, but the jazz bar in the piazza was a complete invention by Argento, he constructed a fake front under the arcades 😉 It was quite obviously Argento's homage to Hopper's painting "Nighthawks".

I saw this movie for the first time a few months ago on youtube (also my first Giallo and Argento film), and it pretty much lives up to the hype. I only saw the shorter English version, so I am interested in seeing the longer Italian version because I felt like I was missing a lot of important plot details. The only flaw of the movie is that I thought the reveal of the killer was disappointing - just not an intimidating or charismatic character. Mrs. Vorheese in Friday the 13th was far mor intimidating, which is why I didn't mind that she wasn't introduced until the final reel (and therefore "breaking the rules" of a whodunit.) I started to become interested in Argento films when I read that the creator of the METROID video game said Argento/Giallo/Italian horror were a major inspiration for the game. Im trying to watch Suspira but it is almost impossible to find it on streaming. I will have to buy the dvd from amazon. Goddam the American consumer for allowing Blockbuster Video to die.

Hey, I just mentioned this one! Definitely one of his best...the amazing collection of set-pieces involving really cool revelations of clues...this picture looks like this other picture that was behind the plaster in that other house but which we don't see all of until later, and then a dozen other clues coming from the same school of mystery thrillers...it really makes most other films look lazy. Love the "Nighthawks" reference with the diner in the alley outside the first victim's apartment, and I can't be the only one to notice the similarity between the main theme and Halloween's main theme.

Great review! I’d add, to the list of influences to Halloween, that the main theme in Goblin’s score itself was inspiration for Carpenters Halloween. No, I don’t know this as fact. But Halloween’s theme to me is a very simplified version of Deep Red’s main theme if you listen carefully to the two. Both effective of course, but I’m of the opinion with not just that theme but the incredibly creepy lullaby that appears in Deep Red, that Deep Red is highly influential on MANY horror films that came after!

The sheer skill of Argentos' direction blew me away in this film. That's what you call a 'virtuoso' film director.
And I agree with you about the European cut being the better version. The directors cut has scenes that go on way too long, imo. Awesome vid man, you should do more giallos (or gialli lol).

Regarding the gay couple in the movie, consider just how radical that was for an Italian film made in 1975. Granted there's no overt displays of affection, but consider the fact that the character of Marcus Daly shows no disapproval, no disgust, and no judgement when he finds out his friend, Carlo, is gay; consider also that Carlo and his boyfriend, Massimo, show a genuine emotional connection and caring for one another, with Massimo clearly being deeply worried about his lover. Yes Massimo was played by a woman, and they play with the idea of the more stereotypically feminine gay man (which in this day and age might be considered a stereotype), but the mere fact that a film, made in Italy, in the 1970s) shows us a gay couple with genuine feelings for one another, and a straight friend who accepts their relationship without a second thought - that is huge.

Actually, GIALLO, which means "yellow" (for a specific reason) became a synonym of "mistery" in Italy, a "murder" which calls to be solved, in particular. Any unresolved murder is a mystery, hence a "giallo". Deep Red and other Argento's movies are atypical Gialli (it's the plural for Giallo) because they have a strong component of horror.
