Very underrated movie by Tobe Hooper. It had all the right elements for a great horror movie: atmosphere, acting, directing, and pacing. Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel both praised the movie! Thanks for your review and remember: "God is watching you."

I loved the make up effects applied to Gunther, he looked so grotesque and the drool dripping from his mouth looked so real. I'm a big fan of old school amusement parks; there's just something about that captivates me and i wish there were a lot more horror movies set in them. Love the different coloured lighting used throughout the film and the acting by Kevin Conway was one of the highlights for me. I love this movie and greatly enjoyed this review. Dean Koontz wrote the novelization for this movie, also called The Funhouse, and in it it's revealed that Amy and the little boys mother had a relationship with The Barker years before, which is why she didn't want them to go to the carnival, and the mutated baby that's in the jar in the Freakshow attraction is actually a baby they had together therefore making it Amy's and little boy's half brother.

Another recommendation for you by Tobe Hooper, is his immediate follow-up to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, called Eaten Alive (1976). It has a very TCM (1974) meets Motel Hell (1980) meets Alligator (1980) vibe going on and is underrated as hell. I also really liked the much hated The Mangler (1995) and obviously the much raved Salem's Lot (1979).

Only negative I can think of is the child character. His character was pretty inconsequential to the plot. Would of loved to see him sneak into the funhouse also. Great review Lee. 1981 is my favorite year in horror. The Funhouse is a very, very good slasher movie. There was just one major aspect of the film that holds it back for me to rank it as a classic.
    Spoilers:
It was the subplot of Amy's little brother Joey. The actor who played him was great, I really liked his character, but he actually has a lot of screen time devoted to him running around alone at the carnival and it doesn't go anywhere. He just gets picked up by his parents in the end. I thought what should have happened, or where I thought the movie going to go but didnt, was that Joey and Amy where going to join forces to slay the monster. It would have been a great story arc for both character's as they didnt get along in the beginning of the movie and it would have been perfect to show how much they needed and loved as each other to get out of an awful situation and to strengthen the family bond of brother and sister. Aside from that, the Funhouse is a very good horror. One peg below being a classic.
If you want a good Tobe Hooper/John Carpenter team up, watch the anthology Body Bags

Marilyn gave us one of the most realistic performances I've ever seen. She scared the shit out of me as a kid!

Well done! That bestiality angle was particularly interesting and unique! I don't think I've heard any other reviewer of this flick mention THAT item. I have, myself, always been struck by the deformity link between the cow and the monster though.

I don't think that BEASTIALITY can PRODUCE OFFSPRING in REAL LIFE since the chromosomes are different ( though I'm not 100% SURE, I may be wrong about that ), but THIS IS a MOVIE after all, and you are right about that shared deformity between the sideshow cow and the killer, . .. very good observation there. The only other fictional case of monster children being born from interspecies couplings that I know of is in Sade's novel 120 Days of Sodom.
ONLY problem that I had with this flick, .. . HOW the hell did this presumably MOBILE funhouse of this TRAVELING carnival have a BASEMENT ( 8:17)?!

Good review Lee, I have only seen this movie once and didn’t like it much. I bought all of the Scream Factory Collector Edition back in June & this is one of them. I do like all the points you brought up though, I’ll have to give it a second watch. Keep up the good work.

The Funhouse is a worthy successor to Tobe Hooper’s The Texas ChainSaw Massacre(1974)

I remember renting this when I was like 8 years old in like 1989 and thinking "what the fuck?..." Its a great, atmospheric, weird, perverted, grotesque, disturbing film. I think the blonde girl cornered under the funhouse was particularly uncomfortable and just gross while slightly sad at the same time. I like how they build the creepiness of the carnival before the killing starts.

Wow, the creatures that they used in this movie kinda reminded me of the zombies they used for MJ's Thriller music video. lol I don't know, that's just me. lol

I own and read the Dean Knootz book this was based off. If you compare the two, there's not much in similarities. But as just a stand alone film... it's very entertaining in a rather odd way

From what I remember of the movie one of the guys stole money and that is what started them being hunted. I think it was the guy with the axe in his head. Good movie.
