I’ve been noticing that Pottery Barn has been really pushing darker wood finishes on their site and I’m seeing designers I love like Amber Interiors use a lot of darker woods lately, I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of dark wood tones this year
Thank you for that. It’s always good to stay ahead of the latest design trends in the work most of us do. ♥️
Just bought some stuff through your Amazon store, I hope that helps you in some small way. You are my favorite furniture refinisher to watch. With spring break coming up, I hope to redo my first piece of furniture using your methods. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us Shannon. Love your sweet little helper.
Thank you 🥰
I hope this is an interesting correction: it's not Jimmy rig, it's Jerry rig. The term came about during WWII, when the name 'Jerry' indicated a German soldier. Anything put together with dubious result was considered to be 'Jerry rigged'.
Love your work & ingenuity.
Thanks for telling us that! I love to learn where our sayings came from. Do you know how “Mind your Ps and Qs” came about? I read an article that said it originated in pubs. When the pub got too rowdy. The bar maid would say mind your ps and qs which referred to Pints and Quarts of beer.
@@karenbutcher5921 very interesting! I love it!
I love this finish. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and tips.
Came out gorgeous.
Lovely transformation
Stunning!!!

You are the Queen of this faux modern look technique! I enjoy your videos and learn from the detailed narrative! Thanks for sharing!
I tried your other pottery barn finish on 2 second hand dining tables with great results. Also used your faux concrete finish on the base of one. You are so talented and a good teacher!
I could watch you all day long. You're the best of the best. You try anything sand your homemade recipes with a relaxed attitude. Thank you 💖
So amazing, Love it!

Just love your work!!
that looks so great!!!!
You are not only very talented, you are a wonderful teacher!!! I appreciate your attention to detail as you explain things. I am excited to try this on an old dresser that was my Dad's when he was a boy. It is currently painted brown. I love the look. First I have to get my garage cleaned out so I have a place to work on it. LOL
I'm from Georgia too...I've tried one of your furniture looks -the other pottery barn finish - on my own kids furniture and it came pretty good. You are the one that helped me the most with methods and advice... thanks .
Super love this!! 👏👏😀
I'm definitely going to try this on a Sligh Furniture desk I saved off the curb the other day. Thanks soo much(once again).
Always love your videos honey. . beautiful finish 🥰👍
Angry Orange is awesome! Been using it for the last year on everything. That is a concentrated bottle. But so good on Walls, pet accidents, dressers, etc.
Awesome. I'm getting ready to refinish 2 end tables and this will be a perfect finish for the top! I love how you experiment and come up with new techniques, then so willingly share with all of us.
❤️❤️❤️
Just beautiful!! Great work I know your a professional but I appreciate your sharing thank you be Blessed
Beautiful work...❤❤❤
I think I've watched almost all of your videos, and they are so informative and helpful, especially in color choices. I've tried your pottery barn gray on several pieces of my own furniture that I upgraded from cheap black veneer to tables and TV stand that look fabulous. My husband LOVES them. I'm wondering if you have any plans to test out the MCM walnut colors that are so popular right now. I'd love to make over some items with a mid-century modern vibe, but could use help on the color choices, and method to make them look like walnut instead of oak. Thanks for all your videos! 🙂
I just followed your whole video. Super clear explanations. I finished my side table and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I don’t think you have to worry about me taking any of your business, but I’m happy with it! 😉
I have this VERY dresser! I bought it from a landlady in the 1970s, so I guess it was a 1960s or 50s dresser and I think it's maple. It was ORANGE, which even in the 70s was NOT a cool finish, so I sanded it down and dark-stained it with no clear coat at all. It has been lovingly used to this very day--it is now silky smooth on top from dusting and loving touches for 50 years, moved at least 5 times and in excellent condition with very few mars and now being used in our closet. I have thought of taking it to the bare wood look, but watching your video today, I decided I still love this one for how I changed it 50 years ago. In fact, how you did this dark-colored faux wood treatment makes yours look very similar to mine in color--which I mean as a compliment, if you can't tell. Thanks for making this video--and nice job!
Awesome great job

Hi! I enjoy your videos so much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Have you ever tried using a wood graining tool with your projects?
Love this!!
Thanks Ninna ❤️
I'm loving your videos. I'm in the middle of a project. Wish me luck. 😅
Beauty!!
Love the work mu
Awesome.
I love to watch your my favorite !❤
TY
I just did a dark because I did the light and when done it looked like it grew mold. hahahaha! So changed it to dark. Worked out ok. Did a large dresser oak and two nightstands. Took three days.
I love this so much! You truly inspire me! I would love to see what colors you would choose to use this technique to do that classic "Ikea" colored wood. I don't know what it is exactly, like a birch unfinished color?
I’ve done several faux wood looks on my channel and plan to do more ❤️ here’s my lightest finish I’ve done ua-cam.com/video/Qr9Ony0nhP4/v-deo.html
I love your channel! Very inspiring and real!
Is the pink base sort of taupe? I’ve been thinking of getting Home Depot to tint my Behr chalk paint and go from there… thoughts?
Thanks for all you do!
That’s a great idea! I just added that to my description based on your comment ❤️ Paint Color Is close to - Behr pueblo brown
Love it, have you ever tried to get a white oak finish?
I’ve done several faux wood looks on my channel and plan to do more ❤️ here’s my lightest finish I’ve done ua-cam.com/video/Qr9Ony0nhP4/v-deo.html
Do you clean your deck brush after using it or just let it dry? Thanks!
Have you did this finish with dark finish with a light color glaze on dark ?
Wow! X
Love this! Hey real quick what glaze are you using??
The glaze she uses in this video is Valspar antiquing glaze. She holds it up to the camera just b4 she opens it. Around the 10:45 min.
Can you give me your recipe for chalkpaint it is a beautiful piece
Beautiful job! How many coats do you use for top coats? How long do you wait to place anything on top of pieces once done pairing? Tia!
I was wondering the same. Just cause it's triple thick, do you only do 1 coat? Only do the 2-3 depending on amount traffic it will see? 🤔
Can I do this with a *damaged* laminate dining table top?
I thought I would ask you your thoughts on mahogany. I know it's very dated. But the wood is amazingly strong and used to created many high end pieces of furniture during the last century. Any hope on updating it without losing the richness of the wood?
This looks great! I love following your channel and seeing different variations you discover. Would the gel stain you’ve used in previous faux wood stain projects work? Like the Rustoleum Brown (I think)? Is the key difference the base paint color and how much gel stain you add, or do you actually need a darker gel stain?
this particular valspar glaze seems to be what made it possible to go this dark for me
Awesome. Thanks for your reply! I’ve used used your faux wood techniques a few times now, updating furniture in my house, and I’m excited to do more! It’s a really fun process.
How do you keep it from drying out too fast? I can’t get done with even a small top without the first part drying and making horrible streaks by the time I’m completely done with the top.
Coffee grounds work- I bought a desk from a bar (didn’t know it was a bar until I drove 40 minutes out in the country). It smelled like old fried food and wet ash trays. 🤢 I turned it upside down, bought cheap coffee (ground) and spread it on every surface. Took the drawers out and put coffee grounds in them too. Wrapped the whole thing in a plastic drop cloth and left it for a few days. Flip right side up and repeat if necessary.
Oh wow!!
Does adding calcium carbonate lighten the color of the paint?
What's the color of glaze ??
Hi Shannon. I m very keen to learn this pottery barn wood finish.. I don’t hv an antiquing glaze available.. can I mix Annie Sloan Pearlescent glaze with dark brown chalk paint n do the same process..
You can make your own glaze with paint and clear coat and if you want to add an extender you can also for more open work time but I have had good results w/o extender working in my cool temp garage. I usually use water based polyurethane but I’m sure polycrylic would do fine as well. I usually just use the hardware store acrylic based paints so I can’t say how it would work with chalk paint ❤️
@@blacksheephouse thank you so much 🙏❤️..
Can you use Angry Orange to get rid of nasty musty smells on the inside of old suitcases do you think? Thanks!!
It’s worth a shot! I would think so
Can I add the red and brown paint to a white chalk paint that I already have? I want to do this to my bathroom vanity. What paint can I use beside chalk paint. So Do I use the behr ruggard tan in the cabinet and trim paint? I use that color for the lighter color you show in the tutorial the pottery barn look. Will the valspar antiquing glaze give that darker tone?
You can totally add the red and brown to your chalk paint, try a small amount first to get the color you like 👍
You can use any paint you like, I would prime a vanity first just because they get so much use and water. I generally use rugged tan in the satin or semi gloss enamel and then finish the piece after it’s dry with a matte water based polyurethane to give a more matte finish bc I prefer matte finishes
I've used this Valspar glaze and had it dry on me in less than 15 minutes. Very annoying but then again, I'm in Arizona.
I'm confused ive 2atched a few of your diy ideas I love how your items come out beautiful but on one video you say you stay away from chalk paint and opt for the HGTV paint in CAVIAR and also dont use primer with that paint but on the other video I watched you used primer and chalk paint? Which in your opinion is your very favourite choice of paint which turns out a perfect job ?
Hi! Thanks for watching so many of my videos!! 😀
My absolute favorite paint right now is Valspar Furniture and cabinet enamel. It takes longer to cure but once it does it is SO SO durable and it doesn’t need a topcoat or primer first, although primer is cheaper than any paint so it would be a savings to use primer generally if you paint many pieces ❤️
My second favorite is my one step paint recipe you can find here ua-cam.com/video/AAPd3F3J7xg/v-deo.html
My third favorite is Fusion mineral paint. These are my recommendations as of 2022 ❤️
💖💖💖💕💖💖💖
Can you please tell me the color of the glaze, I really want to trying this for my son’s dresser.
Thank you
The glaze she uses in this video is Valspar antiquing glaze. She holds it up to the camera just b4 she opens it.
Is the pet grooming brush nylon .I live in NewZealand so need to find a stockist
There is an Amazon link in her description
It’s a rubber/silicone type
Is it safe to wash your paint brushes in the kitchen sink like that? Not bad for your pipes? (I do it too, but have always wondered.)
Yes I work with contractors on house flips and we do this all the time. It does not effect the pipes just run lots of water which you do have to anyway to fully clean your brush :)
@@LittleBugBeauty I can’t tell you how good it is to have a sanity check on that. Thanks for taking the time to reply!
Do you find dark wood finishes sell well?
They are what pottery barn has plastered all over their site right now so I’m thinking they will be a hot item
Everything has a California warning on it, pretty much. Thank goodness I do not live in California, so in Florida your ok. Peace! (Joking)
Perfection not needed.
Yeepie. 😊
I love this look. My question is if you aren’t happy the next day , can you redo
Yes you can totally redo this look, especially since the added texture will just add to your wood look. You can either wait till it dries fully and repaint over with the base coat or you can sand the glaze off or sometimes you can even wash the glaze off if the base coat was semi gloss ❤️ hope that helps
@@blacksheephouse thank you for your prompt response. I love your channel
Mmmm.looks like pudding!
I bought the glaze on sale they are no longer going to make
Music.
Beautiful!
