I love that after seven years, you can still make a Last of Us video that's unlike all the others.
This is one of the first I've ever watched. I'd appreciate some recommendations.
Just finished playing Part 2 and everything you said on this video makes TLOU2 even more tragic. I think Part 2 builds up perfectly on our beloved characters from Part 1 and deals with Ellie’s emotional conflict perfectly. As somebody else said, it was a bold move to continue the story that way but the parallels between Joel and Abby make the player enter kinda the same moral dilemma Ellie has. At the end ‘what art does is making you feel something’ and Part 2 made me feel a whole pallet of emotions and I firmly believe it is a good successor with a bittersweet ending that feels real no matter how much we would not want it to be. Definitely, both Titles were amazing pieces of art (at least for me).

If one of the first game's themes is about the dangers of lone survivalism - one of the second game's themes is definitely ruthless tribalism.
I find it Incredible how better Naughty Dog gets with each game, The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2 are incredible with fun gameplay, great characters and a deep stories.

Everytime I finish the game, I am confronted with a whole hodge-podge of feelings and emotions all over again. It's so conflicting.
But I agree. Joel needs Ellie and Ellie needs Joel.
And just like you pointed out, it was always cool to me that the very last thing you do in the game is to press triangle to take Joel's hand to climb over a ledge. That's a perfect encapsulation of what this game is about: relationships.

I've always been of the mind that Ellie would have almost without hesitation given her life to save the world. That obviously becomes objectively clear in the second game with her response to Joel, and that insanely powerful line at the end, "I was supposed to die in that hospital. My life would've fucking mattered" but I don't even think we needed the second game to discern that this was how Ellie felt, if anything it only really highlights what the first game (including Left Behind) gives us. The last conversation of the first game is brilliantly written and I'm going to obnoxiously quote it at length quickly -- "Her name was Riley, and she was the first to die. And then it was Tess. And then Sam... I'm still waiting for my turn." "None of that is on you." "You don't understand." "I struggled for a long time with surviving. No matter what, you keep finding something to fight for. Now I know that's not what you wanna hear right now --" "Swear to me. Swear to me that everything that you said about the fireflies is true."
Joel makes the mistake of assuming he understands how Ellie feels. In a way, this is an inverse of their conversation in the house, when Ellie insists that she understands how Joel feels about loss. But in the ending, Joel is reading Ellie's hurt as pure survivor's guilt, the same one he's cursed with, but he's missing Ellie's true struggle. Ellie's guilt stems specifically from her immunity -- her best friend, and blooming girlfriend, died in front of her, to an infected bite. The same bite that Ellie had on her arm. Yet, Ellie didn't turn into one of them. She was the "lucky" one. She made a promise to Riley to go out all poetic together and some miraculous immunity kept her alive while the person closest to her succumbed into, well, zombieness. That's an unfathomable sort of weight to carry -- and I think it's why Ellie feels distant from the rest of humanity. It's part of the reason why, as Joel says, "she fought like hell to get there". Her immunity HAS to mean something, it has to amount to something, it needs to make a difference. It would make her surviving Riley, Tess, and Sam matter. Ellie would absolutely sacrifice herself. But that's just another layer to Joel's perspective. Ellie is only 14, she can't possibly be expected to make or have the capacity to make a decision like that, Joel is her overprotective father and he's going to make the choices he believes is right for her (and himself). I usually read her "okay" as a "I know you're bullshitting me, and I'm not happy about it, but now we have to make do with this."
Despite me being of that mind, your analysis and interpretation still blew me away. Reading that "okay" as an "I understand" given what their connection means to each other is such a valid and beautiful interpretation. I also have a whole new level of appreciation for the ending sequence with your revelation about the importance of the last gameplay mechanic being you taking Joel's hand as Ellie. Beautiful video all around, I'm excited to go through the rest of your catalogue. Also sorry for the long comment lmao
Beyond Desolation gets me whenever I hear it. I might be absolutely happy one moment, but play me those three first chords (idk how to call it, I'm not a musical guy) and it will drop my mood to rock bottom and I'd need to smoke a cigarette. This track just captures that final close-up shot of the guitar and Ellie walking away from it. What a masterpiece of cinematography last bits of the game are.
This was one of the very few games that made me burst in tears, and not only once, but in several moments of the storyline. That game got me right in the feels. Still haven't played the last of us 2, but is in the top of my list. By the way... excellent job on this video... made me remember all the scenes and moments that made me fall for this game. really great job!
part 2 is divisive I hope you will enjoyed it but it's not as good as the first (story wise)

Rewatched this after today's LAST OF US casting announcement. The amount of love and passion you put into your videos is FUCKING INSANE. Seriously. INSANE. I can not wait until the day the algorithm picks you up so people will finally see what a gem you and your channel are.
Many channels these days choose to make videos out of hatred towards the very thing they claim to be a fan of. But your channel instead chooses to focus purely on what you LOVE and why it means so much to YOU.
I want you to know that you're a massive inspiration to me. You have taught me to focus my energy into appreciating things that I love, rather than dwelling on things that I hate. Ive been telling myself art is meant to make you feel something when thinking about TLoU2 but there isn't a single moment that made me shed a tear even when playing it for the first time BUT ive played the first game more times than I remember and that scene where Joel holds Ellie for the first time and calls her babygirl makes me cry every time even broken up when Bailey was talking about i teared up thats what art does it connects you with something so much than even a slight positive emotion can break you down

Please do a video on last of us 2. Its a bold and risky story that is essential to the fjrst and i think it works, but totally understand if it doesn't for some people. Its a great game, one that lives up to the first.

I got very excited when I saw that you were doing a video on The Last of Us at the same time I was experiencing the game for the first time ever. My sister who is also a fan of your channel was equally excited as she was backseat gaming with me and we loved it so much. I would totally f*cking die for Joel and Ellie too. Fortunately, we finished the game before this video came out. Magnificent video as always man. Totally worth the wait. I can always feel the passion and love in your voice and I love your "empathy first" motto. Keep up the awesome work!

My problem with the "You Need Me & I Need You" theme is that it only works in the narrative, not the gameplay. During gameplay Yorda is a chore to baby sit and Ellie is pretty much a ghost.

In that game you control each brother with one half of the controller, one brother is right and the other is left. This can be played as single player or two player with one person holing half the controller. Thing is at some point one of the brothers dies, so that hand of person doesn't play anymore and you lose all the things that only that brother could do.

I always phrased it like: Is Ellie willing to sacrifice herself? And never realized there could be other, more relevant questions. I love the question You asked, and I love the answer as well. TLOU 2 was really incredible, but I didn't like the creative choices, but admittedly it does stay faithful with the themes of the first one, and it is very well made and the final scene on the porch was really good stuff. I'm not deducting points from the game, I just didn't get the story that I personally wanted, but what can you do?

The saddest thing is the Fireflies vaccine wouldn't have worked anyway because even with all the advances in medicine, there is no vaccine for fungal infections, so Ellie would've died for nothing
That’s not what the game artifacts indicate. That is diegetic information given by the story itself: the vaccine would work. There is real-world research being done on fungal vaccines. There just aren’t many fungal diseases that strike anyone but the immunocompromised.

joeplaysguitar I can see that point of view on it. I’m not a fan personally but I’m glad somebody enjoyed it. Tbh I think it’s gonna be a long time till anybody can discuss the game without all the drama surrounding it and the polarizing nature of the story and choices made in said story. No better then the last Jedi for film fans, it has split a lot of people to the point most conversations turn into blind screaming matches under 120 characters 😂
