Ever wanted to make UA-cam videos on movies but not sure where to start? Why not try making a STAR WARS DEFINED video! Just pick a story, a scene, an action or moment or idea and talk about why you love it, and we'll have it added to the STAR WARS DEFINED playlist right here: ua-cam.com/play/PL9DcNxTVwGux0MRI1fln1UjRQ1K1vfILN.html

@@chile_en_nogada2090 I think it's easy to argue that it is, in fact, a very "well-made" movie. You simply didn't like the movie itself. And that is fine. (I - on the other hand - thoroughly enjoyed it...)

@@fathervader Well yes I totally think it wasnt an enjoyable star wars experience. But actually I am one of the few that also believe that the movie was poorly made in terms of direction. Rian Johnson just cannoy direct the actors well. Its really interesting to me. Rey when she is 'training' with Luke is so lifeless compared to Rey in the force awakens.
Also cinematography wise. If you create a pretty still or picture but the meaning behind is pointless or confusing then the picture itself is not good. I am mainly talking about the Holdo Manuever. Which has already been needed to be retconned twice. Its these things that demonstart to me that not much thought was behind the movie or scenes. This movie broke star wars cannon so many times.
That holdo scene also included the use of slow motion which breaks star wars cannon. Slow motion doesnt make sense in star wars movies as they are supposed to be a drama or like a stage play. In a stage play you cant do slow motion.
There are other ways it breaks cannon but I do not remember right now

Chile_En_ Nogada There has been slow motion in other Star Wars movies before TLJ. Luke’s moment in the Dagobah cave & Rey confronting Kylo near the end of TFA.

      J. J. Abrams made an uninspired mystery box, so Rian Johnson pooped in it to troll. He mocked Abram's plot points he worked so hard to set up in the previous movie and humilated various characters, and dismissed the Star Wars' themes, and presented a nihilistic and deterministic view of the universe; Luke Skywalker hates himself and the concepts people would find inspiring in Star Wars because Rian Johnson hates them as well. It doesn't help that the plot is non-sensical and internally inconsistent.
He has talent directing, but Star Wars isn't a good fit for him.

As far as we know, there was no conflict. i.e. an empire knock-off with a ridicoulous amount of resources popping out of nowhere, nor a "neo-resistsance". It was supossed to be something similar to the EU comics with a different storyline.
We know that Luke was to become a depressed hermit after he was betrayed by one his students, known as the "Jedi Killer". And that he will get back in action by the end of the first movie and die in the third. Also Han and Leia's son (who might be the Jedi Killer) left the Jedi and took a female Dark Side user as his master.
This is different from an asshole and nihilistic Luke who believes in determinism, and who despises the concept of heroism. One who believes that it is impossible to redeem Ben, even though he redeemed Darth Vader who did much worse atrocities (in the canon comics, Ben didn't even try to destroy the Jedi temple so he didn't betray the Jedi Order or Luke. He escaped after he saw Luke near his bed with his lightsaber raised, and a mysterious storm came soon after and destroyed the Jedi temple). After years of this worldview, Luke finally decides to sacrifice himself as a Force projection (instead of using his ship which was retconned into being functional), and finally die as he wanted to, because Yoda's ghost mocked him for being a bad Jedi and not reading Jedi texts as he should have, and telling him he should teach his failures as well.

I can't wait to see Rian Johnson's trilogy, where he's not constrained by JJ bloody Abrams.

I don't even think he was constrained by J.J.
As far as I'm concerned, he was constrained by Disney.
Rian even said he would've been willing to do Episode 9 but wasn't able to because there was just too little time, but not just that, Colin Trevorrow had a script (available online) for his own Episode IX that was built upon the foundations set by The Last Jedi, and similar to The Last Jedi, he wrote the film while observing the story taking place within the previous one. Disney scrapped it because they wanted to appeal to the vocal minority but instead pleased absolutely nobody and made a hack job of a movie that almost rivals Justice League.

What's funny about that is that back when Empire came out everyone hated it. I know the plan was for Rian to start working on it after finishing Knives Out, but that was when Star Wars still had a movie every year plan. With the schedule having slowed down, can we confirm that he's still on it? With all the persistent whining there's been about this movie, I'd worry that he'd be the first to get taken off the board. Which would suck because I for one would love to see more of challenging and layered Star Wars movies.

Now, on an even more serious note, it's really funny 'cause I've seen some of your videos for a while and kinda dug them, but it was this one from a franchise I don't care about that actually made me decide to subscribe to your channel. The Last Jedi (among other few examples) is the only thing that seems interesting to me out of such a tarnished by its idiotic fandom franchise, and the way you talk about it and everything else simply transmits joy and passion. I know that you wanted to cover the "Rey is a nobody" angle (something that seems like a genius idea to me, as an outsider to the convoluted clusterfuck that is the Star Wars universe) but guess the people who took the decisions for TROS weren't in the same frequency, to put it mildly.

I loved this movie from day one. I've been arguing with haters ever since. And it's funny to see that haters aren't nearly as vocal as they once were. All their arguments are rubbish, it boils down to one simple thing... they expected Luke to be a god and smite the bad guys while everybody else sat around and watched. This movie did everything a sequel should have done, it expanded the lore, added to the legend, and made the Force a universal thing again.
Buuuuuuuut. Jar Jar Abrams had to destroy all that in an attempt to appease the haters. So now Star Wars is just another universe of superpowered mutants fighting each other. I was just graduating from college at almost 22 years old when I saw the first SW film. I have waited over 42 years to watch the last of the nine movies. I have loved the journey. I did not have a lot of expectations, just patience. I do not parse each scene, each plot line, each bit of dialogue. I enjoyed the last trilogy. It's done. If I were a well-established writer/director asked to finish up the saga, I probably would have had a different take on at least some of the plot and characters, but I'm not! So I'm just glad and gratified that I lived long enough to see the story completed, at least for now. You "kids" need to realize that we didn't know in the early summer of 1977 that there would be a sequel, let alone three trilogies. There may be more, someday....

With all due respect, having a good idea isn’t enough. You also have to execute it well, and to me, a random woman telling a child soldier, who is trying to run away from war, about evils of war as if he’s learning it for the first time isn’t well executed. And frankly I had to learn the concept of good ideas don’t equal good execution the hard way in my English class. My teacher kept praising me for the brilliance of my ideas but criticized my poor execution. I believe it’s the same case with TLJ.
That is if you believe every idea behind the movie was brilliant off course, which i don’t...

She's showing exploitation, greed, injustice and people benefiting from the war. Things that he has not experienced as working for the first order. He left the first order because he was terrified by their executions and was afraid he would get killed himself. Now he realizes that the problem is even larger. The evil doesn't only affect himself but the entire galaxy. Rose is showing him a side where he's not fighting only for himself and his own survival, but for the greater good for the people of the galaxy.
What makes a movie good is totally subjective how it was perceived by the viewer. If someone thought that the movie was great because it conveyed powerful themes and messages then that's totally fair. Thats usually how people defend the prequels.

I agree with you but.. I think the problem with the last jedi is force awakens. To me starwars is an arc of growth of civilizations. In the prequels we saw the fall of the jedi and the Republic which is reminiscent of anakin's fall to the dark side.... The fall was due to the corruption and the failure of the jedi order. The originals was the redemption of the fallen, Vader was redeemed, the empire collapsed and the new Republic rose and the Jedi order was revived.... Obi wan and Yoda were sure that Vader was lost on the dark forever but Luke had hope... That was the thing that separated him from the jedi before him, that was the thing that made Luke a true jedi. so in a way, the originals was about the Renaissance of society of starwars...
The problem I have with the sequels in general is that the same arc of the originals was repeated... The new Republic collapsed, Luke's order was destroyed... It's the same thing that had happened in the prequels. Then the arc of the originals was repeated In the sequels which undermines the arc of the originals. This is the reason why I personally dislike the sequels in general.
