- Every once in a while, you experience something that sticks with you for years; these are surprising, emotionally scarring events that, no matter what you do, you can’t shake; you try to move on from them or try something different and new but it doesn’t work because the old thing is still haunting you. It may be an ex-girlfriend that you’re stuck on, or a family relative that left your childhood tainted, or even a novel or piece of entertainment. It takes a permanent seat in your mind and refuses to leave. You can try to fight it, but it’s staying and inevitably will demand your acceptance. Most of us have experienced one such haunting, for better or worse, and have been permanently affected by the experience. You probably even have something in your mind’s eye right now; something which you’ve been carrying with you for years and years. You don’t talk to anyone about it (except on very sacrosanct occasions), rather you keep it buried, despite its innumerous effects on you.
It also isn’t always a bad thing. For example, I remember in high amounts of detail every element of the setting when I was fourteen and won the state chess championship. I felt like all the years of work I had poured into this game had finally paid off. It was pure euphoria, and it has stuck with me for years despite being a positive experience.
These events which affect us so deeply are what I find incredibly interesting and are the very things upon which this video is focused. Not much affects us the way that these aforementioned examples do, and so when something does, as you would expect, it refuses to leave you. And as I said, these events can be triggered by any number of things, whether it’s a song, a girl, a boy, a dog or cat, a play or movie, or even a video game, they all can have the same cumulative effect. And guess what, the latter is what I’m getting at.

I am emotionally attached to this game because my father and I would bond over this game before he passed away. I played it first, he got curious and wanted to play, and made him fall in love with it. He’d ask for tips and help from me and just enthuse about it in normal conversation. The first time I played it after he passed was more sad to me. It was nice seeing Joel and Ellie become more like father and daughter, made me think of the bonding I did with my own father over those characters.

I would watch my daughter play the game and the story hooked me so much that I picked it up and played it too. I hadn't played a game in many years. Watching her play this masterpiece got me back into gaming
I introduced TLoU to my daughter, she now loves this game and its her favourite game. Mine too. We have beaten the game 7 times. We are now both eagerly waiting to play TLoU 2.
After reading this the onion cutting ninjas got me. Video games are always underrated with how much impact it can have on your life in a good way. Glad you were able to bond with a game and remember your father whenever you play it, just know that those memories will forever be there. May your father Rest in peace

Everytime I get to the end of the game when Ellie confronts Joel about the fireflies, as the music swells up I begin to hold my breath. Then she says okay and it stops and I can breathe again.

I literally just finished like 30 minutes ago and I'm going through the same thing right now and I was just staring at the end credits like in shock that I finished it
I completed the main story today and I stood there the whole credit scene looking at the screen , I couldnt say nothing I felt like something was torn from me , I felt like I wanted more of the story and an ending to the whole chaos . Even tough I can’t play most of games that involve blood,gore/zombies(infected) etc for sure I will buy The last of us 2 . Ashley Johnson’s acting got me good and sure as hell I will continue follwing this game.

i assume brick would hurt more when used as a weapon, and bottle would alert more people when thrown

Every single time I hear that theme I want to dive into the game again. But I'm trying to wait to replay it until the release date for part 2 is announced.
A brilliant example of how a single blue-note can turn an otherwise bland sequene to something that resonates and is not easily forgotten. Just a touch of mean.

The reason people love this game is because it's obvious that the creators genuinely love and care about the characters. If they don't, we don't. Everything else follows.

Anyway, what I liked the most about The Last of Us was that not one of the characters did a stupid thing, even Ellie. Usually you have to scream at at least one person in a movie or video game for pulling a numb skulled thing but those moments were practically nonexistent here.
Like there's a scene where Ellie comes across a deer and when she hears a noise, these two guys come out and she doesn't do anything dumb. She refuses to follow them to their camp to get what she wants (medicine) and she's pretty much like, "Try anything, and I'm puttin' one in between your eyes."
Then, when David leads on that the whole thing is a trap, she hightails it the hell outta there, not wasting a moment. They do track her later but that wasn't her fault.

I loved that when they're first driving away from the infected area in the opening and they see a family, Joel's just like "KEEP DRIVING" and they do! Hell, I would do the same thing!
Basically, our protagonists aren't squeaky clean. Like Tess said, they're all pretty shitty people now and that's just the way it is.
They're all very real and believable charactes in a sense. That world has made them having to be that way as otherwise they may have not survived so long! Great point though. The writers etc handled that like so many things beautifully well.
Actually Ellie pretty much pushes her luck too far (with her attitude) and shes too stubborn for her own good.

Everytime I hear Troy Baker say "You have no idea what loss is." there is a special part of my soul that just shivers. The delivery of that line, and that scene is by far my favorite in gaming.

It's especially heartbreaking when you play the 'Left Behind' side-story and you realise what Ellie lost was very much comparable to what Joel lost.
Personally, I believe they kept it simple. Not trying to impress us with visual masterpieces, or epic cinematic events. Just two people in a room with the emotion at the time. Sometimes simple is a better solution to making an epic game.
FINALLY. The first time i saw it at e3 i was like holy shit characters with emotion and a story and it was real and gritty pulling no punches. Then when it came on the screen The last of us i thought ok that looks good cant wait to play it. I don't understand what people think a good game needs or what it should be. A lot of people want over complicated worlds like space or wizards lol
Brandon Tyler at the time for the ps3 this was a visual masterpiece and was at the time probably the best looking console game

gives me the chills, so full of emotions, those couple of words are filled with soo many meanings and emotions, it's one of the best endings I've ever seen in a game, movie or tv show

At the end of the game when the credits start to role i literally had to slump back and process the game i had just experianced the journey and everything i had been through with these charecters i was so invested that when the credits started to slide down the screen i wanted more more to joel and ellies story more time with them another journey with them very few games have left that kind of impression on me
That scene when Ellie saves Joel from drowning and the gameplay that follows is definitely a perfect example of why this game is so so so amazing. The way that Ellie speaks to Joel and the way she is animated after the cut scene shows her annoyance and conflicted mindset with the way Joel has just responded to her just saving his life. To portray such relatable and realistic body language is so emotionally hardhitting and meaningful that it is truly so damn impressive.
Its the 7th time watching that scene with joel and ellie fighting in the room and i still get goosebumps

This game changed my life, it got me through the death of my little brother, and and can confidently say that it contributed in a large part in making me the man I am today. No shame in that.
I wear my firefly pendant everyday with my brothers name on it. Whenever times are rough, I look at it and remember the promise I made to him as he passed on.
If you haven’t already experienced this game, I highly recommend it.

The dynamic between Ellie and Joel was expertly written. Never have I genuinely cared for characters the way I cared about them.
You'll really struggle to find better writing throughout gaming, film and TV industries.
rdr2 has better writing and honestly characters as well, ofc it’s a way longer game it has that advantage but even luke has said the narrative of rdr2 is untouched…ps last of us is also amazing and the characters are brilliant as well, love both of those games and all the characters so much
arthur morgan, john marston and joel and ellie are the only characters who i’ve ever personally loved in gaming
I’m such a LOU nerd, I’m currently going thru it on Grounded+ with the aiming reticule turned off.
For the die hards...turn the reticule off and play thru it. It’s really intense and ammo is soooo much more important because you will miss.

Grounded with no HUD and no reticle, that’s how I played my first play through, and i finally had to turn the reticle on at the winter zombie rush where you have to kill a bloater with David.
It was also the one time where I had to restart the chapter

Thank you so much for making this video. The Last of Us is my favorite game of all time and seeing the scene at the 10:27 mark after having played this game nearly 4 years ago hit me like a truck... man I miss this game, nothing will compare to the first time I played through the story
+Oblivious Tomato Your name is correct, you rate games on their story which is a flawed benchmark to rate a game on, and that along with the fact The Last of Us has such a weak story which is of a genre that we have seen done over and over again. What hits me like a truck is how so many people can call this art when what it is, is a well acted cliche filled movie games that doesn't explore anything new or give us anything revolutionary in game mechanics. That is what a person's favourite game of all time should be rated on, and anything else is a plus

BIG Thonk IQ Me too... she was a really relatable person. At the time that the game came out I was about her age and I could relate to her more than Joel, I liked Joel just as much as Ellie but the reasons behind his actions sometimes went over my head. Looking back now I understand. Joel was afraid, although he didn’t like to show it, he was afraid of what Ellie meant to him.. sparking those emotions of love he had for his daughter decades ago

Soul reaver was definitely ahead of its time for a ps1 game. Period. Im talking about that,not entire serries becouse every other part was weaker and weaker. Soul reaver on ps1 had amazing intro cinematic,still one of the best ever to this day and had amazinh non linear gameplay like no other game at that time. Thats what im talking about. Soul reaver 2 was fine but nothing special and defiance was terrible

I met Neil Druckmann at E3 2017 and took a selfie with him :-) He was like be quick I need to be somewhere and I was fiddling with my camera app tensed that he would just leave without saying a word leaving me hanging there. Gladly he didn't and took an awesome selfie. He then said take care buddy and left. Its one of those moments in my life which will never be forgotten ever. Even if it was just 20 secs.

I can relate. But I did go back and play again on encouragement from friends. I was stunned at all the little subtle tells and comments I missed the first time. Despite my trepidation I was very happy I tried again.
this game has stood the test of time, i can still play it and feel the emotions i felt the first time playing it, i hope the sequel is just if not even better.

I didn’t even play the game because I can’t afford a PS4. I watched the entire 6 and a half hour gameplay with the cutscenes and story and still just sat in bewilderment when the end credits played. Beautiful game, beautiful story, and beautiful characters. I fell in love with the relationship between Joel and Ellie and despite not being able to play it for myself, I’m excited for the second one as well.
In 2013 the last of us wasn’t just a new game it was a new benchmark
Last of Us, God of War, Dark Souls. These are games that will stick with me forever. Thank you to the teams behind these masterpieces.
Edit: Thanks everyone for all of the comments either agreeing or disagreeing. Just a reminder that these three games are games that stuck with me and will continue to stick with me for years to come. Not every game that I consider a masterpiece are among these three (Alan Wake and Witcher 3 to name a couple), but I believe that these three games really changed my perspective of what a video game can achieve. I really don't think Dark Souls should be in that list at all. It's a fun difficult game, but it's hardly a marvel from a game dev perspective.
SgtGo I'm not one to defend Dark Souls. I actually kind of hate it. It's just one big glorified dungeon crawl for me. But... I can understand why people come to like it. It has its themes. The story is there, but it's in the lore. You, are uncovering history. Seeing the decomposing carcasses of the dead glory that once touched Lordran.
dark souls has a very creative way of telling its story and its through its armor and weapon. It actually requires you to uncover the story and its connections yourself rather than just explaining it to you. Its a cool way to do it. If you ever wanna know what i mean just replay some of the series and read each item you get or have. Its honestly really creative.
For me in addition to those you listed I would add the first Bioshock, Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption, Thief The Dark Project, Deus Ex, and Super Mario Galaxy (1&2). There's nothing about those games I would want changed. Thanks devs

When I first played
The Last of Us I really felt like I was part of Ellie and Joel's life, and to me thats what a great game is. It makes you feel like you're part of their story wether it's fictional or non fictional. You feel like you're actually Joel or that you're actually Ellie through out the entire game. This game made me feel their emotions and their struggles with their relationship to the point that I had to quit the game for awhile so I could take in all the feelings that this game produced. Like you said Luke theses kind of games scare you for life with their pace, and their perfect balance of action and emotion. And Luke I thank you for making this video to tell the world how good the games story line is. Once more I thank you for making the video and I thank Naughty Dog for making the game so you could tell all of us how The Last of Us did something amazing to the world of narrative gaming.
Thank you for making me cry again. The Last Of Us moves me to an emotional level that no other story has done before. I need to experience this game again. It's not even playing through a game. TLOU is an experience, no doubt. Runs you through the ringer. It is quite possibly the most perfect story I have ever seen. Everything about it. Character development, pacing, the use of music, absolute perfection.

i actually didn't like the last of us and never finished it, the story was good but the game play its self wasn't to my liking much to the same vain as the first 3 uncharted games, but the forth one changed up the combat and game play just enuf so i could get to the end of the game, fingers crossed for last of us 2 expectations set low tho
@@zacharysparks7097 Oh, I didn't enjoy the gameplay of TLOU either. It simply didn't interest me. But the gripping story helped me push through. I don't hate the gameplay, I just think it is alright. Not bad, but not excellent either.

Not a good idea. Just save your money and don’t attempt it. The story of 1 is very important to the story of 2. You need to know why Ellie is the way she is. The DLC from 1 is a must also.
I am replaying 'The Last' right now (my fifth go around) in preparation for next year's blockbuster and that early scene with Sarah brought tears to my eyes AGAIN. Damn you for being brilliant NaughtyDog

Dayzik i don't think he is actually. i think he is what an awful lot of us would turn into in that situation. joel killed the fireflies because they were CLEARLY incompetent and killing ellie would have been a waste. (and humanity isn't worth saving anyway) look at the game and look at all the things the fireflies do. they are so unbelievably stupid, do you honestly think that those bunch of morons could find a cure? not a chance. i side with joel 100%.
I do not like Joel or Ellie really. The survivors that are killed or dropped from the narrative were far more intetesting.

However, to all the people saying what Joel did in the ending was justified, something Marlene said really stuck out to me and it was, "It's what she'd [Ellie] want." So, he did essentially stop her from choosing for herself and lied to her, so maybe he's not the best person. But, besides the innocent people he may or may not have killed somewhere in the timeline and killing the fireflies, what makes him awful, or rather, who isn't awful in that world?
The Last of Us literally saved my life back in 2013, and actually still does. Basically no other game has made me as invested, even though some came really close (like Bioshock Infinite and the new God of War). I know nothing is perfect but TLoU comes really close. The characters, the story, the gameplay, the environments, the music... I have basically nothing to complain about. The ending was completely unexpected to me and I'm still amazed they managed to do it so right. I obviously can't control my hype for Part II, but I'm also sooo worried. Even though I trust Naughty Dog a 100%, there's always that fear that they won't be able to achieve at least the same level of greatness they did with Part I . Anyway, this is my first time seeing a video of your channel and it was great!

It's culturally a piece of art. It has the aesthetic and story elements based off the movie "the road", and the gameplay tension straight out of "No Country for Old man". And the narrative is simple, not overwritten, and emotional. But what strikes me the most is where Naughty Dog is taking "Part II". It's like they learned from the first, took it more personal, became darker, grungier and it weirdly got a medieval look to it. It's going to be epic.

2 looks good but it also looked like it was trying too hard to bring in LGBT crowd . The kiss is hopefully retconning how the infection is spread or I'mma have to facepalm if Ellie's gf gets infected. Otherwise hopefully even though Ellie will be the only playable character it'll still be just as good as the original.
well in all honesty, the LGBT doesn't have anything to do here. If my memory does well, The Last of Us came out 2012. By then, the DLC "Left Behind" already reveals that side of Ellie to us (the player). The trailer was just reinforcing the little snippet we got many years ago with a probably love interest to Ellie. It will fall on the hands of Naughty Dog to see how will they develop the story.
I had just finished Horizon Dawn, and my son gave me TLOUS and said I should give it a go. Now I LOVED , LOVED Horizon Dawn - the movement and combat engine, the story , the graphics (especially in 4K). So my first reaction on starting TLOUS was it’s ok , but dated and a bit slow.
Well fast forward to the end and I’m like how did I not play this before, and when is the sequel coming out !!

Until upon today I can't decide if Joel's decision at the end of the game was right or wrong, in most games (and stories in general) good and evil are easy to distinguish, and sides are easy to pick, but The Last of Us ending stayed with me because of the ambiguity.
The first time I heard people saying he was a kind of selfish bad guy I was so confused because I was totally on board with what he did and that's exactly what I wanted him to do, I understand the other view now but for me he was right 😅

“What did the last of us do so well?” EVERYTHING
I had a girlfriend who hated video games, always gave me a hard time about playing on my ps3. When I picked up my copy of TLOU she was with me. To my surprise she layed down with me to watch, like 100% of people who played TLOU I was shocked at the intro i didn't know how to feel, but when I looked over at my x she was in tears, I kept playing the game and she couldn't wait for me to get home and play it so she could watch what would happend next. Till today TLOU remains a part of my life, she is a gamer now and sometimes we play online.
In my opinion this is the greatest game I’ve ever played. I’ve been enjoying games since I was 10 years old, I’m now 40. It has such an engaging story with a soundtrack to match perfectly. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve played through the story and I don’t think I’ll be stopping any time soon. Every few months I’ll play it again and still get excited when the menu music begins to play 👌

Yes, it achieved being the greatest game ever made (awesome stealth and and a awesome and an awesome moving and emotional story and characters) even to traditional RPG fans like me. Naughty Dog nailed it as always. Very excited for the sequel.
I just finished the game for the first time last night and was saving this video for this moment. The discussion really gets to the bones of what the game is supposed to make you feel
I agree. The Last of Us did something that no other game has done before or since. It affected me in ways that few other games have. For example, I hadn't received that rush of adrenaline... that "OH SHIT!" moment like I did with Resident Evil 2 when those arms reached through the boarded up windows in the police station... or that scene in RE CV where that zombie suddenly pops out of that sarcophagus.
In any event, the story line was convincing. The eye candy was magical. The puzzles and combat methods were superb. So many areas to explore... That, and it balanced TWO types of enemies: the infected and uninfected. Where we learn that our "own kind" can be more dangerous and unpredictable than their infected counterparts.
The only big thing that surprises me is that there aren't more games like this out there. Oh well. One can't rush perfection. Until then, I'm going insane waiting for the 2nd one!! (Pray they do not ruin it.)

Silent Hill 2 did that to me years before this so I was ready for this kind of game. Still great though.
I doubt they will ruin it but I don't think tlou2 will beat the first one because the first 1 made it really high stakes cuz it was that good and people expect so much from the second since the first was so good.

When I first completed TLOU I just sat there in genuine shock, reflection and a weird feeling I don’t think ever left. It’s my favorite game of all time, I’ve played thousands, AAA and indie alike. Nothing compares, it’s on a different plane.

Much of the music is a mandoline. A sort of 10 string guitar played flat normally. Gustavo Santaolalla is fabulous composer and musician. He captured the games mood wonderfully.
Teltales the walking dead season one was the first game that ever made me cry but this game did something else it sticks with you for so long I have every part engraved in my mind I love this game and can’t wait for part 2
Paradox Desmond Agreed. Now looking back, TLOU is the superior game by far. TWD Season 1 was also the first game to ever make me cry, and that was definitely the last good TWD game. TLOU’s story, however, stays with me. It changed me. I was just a little younger than Ellie when I first played the game and it shaped me to become the person I am today. I’m glad I gave this game a chance.

Brandon Ramos oi the last of us is an absolutely amazing game, my favourite is I’m honest. However, Minecraft is truly a masterpiece on its own, it’s stood the test of time and still holds a dedicated fan base.
It's very true. I played it shortly after I had my daughter. Like everyone here, it affected me deeply. For me the biggest surprise was that I agreed with Joel 100% to save Ellie over the human race, something I didn't think I would feel. I played some of the cut-scenes (the safe ones) for my daughter today, hence how I ended up here.
I think the two other things that are absolute genius about the story is this, and it's in it's two controversies.
1) The Joel is going to 'damn the world' with his actions at the end. The rest of the story is leading up to that. It's not out of the blue. Remember the scene in the middle where he visits his brothers town? They both get a glimpse of what life would be like, and there are lots of comments about 'the world not being worth saving'. Something that is then reinforced by the switch to more human enemies in the latter half of the game, and a different perspective on the fireflies, one is primed for Joel's decision at the end.
2) We are not used to seeing paternal love in the media. Every father knows he will do anything (even kill if need be), to protect his family, but we rarely see it. We certainly don't see that level of non-sexual love a man can feel for others, except perhaps in war films like Band of Brothers. This I think right there, was the genius of the story. It's why we often haven't seen a story like this before, this is something people don't see. On top of that, Joel is not a paragon in any way. He's turned 'evil' in the time between the intro and the gameplay, as evidenced by the interactions in bandit camp, and his violence is extreme the whole way through the story. I'll tell you now, women were shocked by what they saw, sometimes they got it, sometimes they were horrified. At the time it caused feminist outrage. I read many articles where women were like 'uggh, this is horrific and evil, and he probably did all this to sleep with her when she grows up...'
So recipe for success. Start with a topic, 'a violent broken man learning to love again by having to protect a child', then chose to show that it doesn't 'redeem' him in the sense it turns him into an angel, he stays the violent person he has become, but turns that violence to protecting what he loves, then put him on a journey where he (and us) will slowly come to realize that the world isn't worth saving and the best he can do is build something new with those he loves and fight to protect it, and *then* deliver that story perfectly, with all the pacing and cut-scenes and gameplay that makes it possible, no mis-steps.
What you end up with is a story I personally don't think will ever be beaten. I personally think this is the best game ever made, one that shows that Ebert (bless him) was wrong about games being art, and one that not only stirred up controversy, but exists forever more as a statement for those kinds of views of family and masculinity and the issues raised.
(Although I suspect the sequel will be almost as good, it's pretty clear it's *her* story rather than his, and my guess is an even darker revenge story about her losing her lesbian lover and the kinds of issues around that... should be interesting).

I also loved Part 2... A Rollercoaster of emotions, amazement and doubts about characters and myself... I think that Naughty Dog don't need to have a part 3 because where we will go? With what purpose?
The last of us part 2 is quite literally my ideal type of game in terms of linearity meets a generous amount of exploration. All w/o being a gratuitous, over the top huge map w/millions of encounters & an uncountable amount of choices... I'd also put both Remedy's "Control" & "Jedi: Fallen Order" in that category as well actually. A trifecta of just doing gaming correctly. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Fallout New Vegas, Outer Worlds, Skyrim, etc. The Last of Us (2013) was also an ingenious work of art & the pinnacle of what makes a great game phenomenal!

And 5 years later this game still hit me really hard on emotions, memories etc...
It's still my favorite game and will probably be forever, one game that can't get out of my mind and that I can't stop playing at least 2 times per year

Thank you for this video, really. TLoU is unlike anything else I've ever experienced, and I feel it's going to stay that way for a long, long time. I will never forget my first play through and then the subsequent play throughs after that. I had a chance to talk with Troy Baker about the whole experience (of the game) and found that it works so well as a game and as a narrative because it was utterly real; I am beyond euphoric to have others see this and understand the impact it has had on gamers and non-gamers alike - hell, include the whole industry, too. Many have tried and failed, and it was because they were/are attempting to create something that will never be able to be recreated in the way Naughty Dog has just HAPPENED to do because it wasn't expected to BE much of anything. So, thank you again for so eloquently presenting my experience and everyone else's.
For me the game that left a permanent emotional impact on me were both RDR2 and RDR1 RDR2 in particular stuck with me long after I played it and I still think about it even now I wanna play both last of us games so badly but I don't have a PS4 sadly

The studios u mentioned aren't the only ones that are good at telling a story, I wouldn't even say they are the best ones. They just make their games deliberately artsy and make it clear that the story they are telling is serious and important and that's what makes people think that they are the first games to have a "real" story. Seriously though if The last of us and God of war are what's considered masterpieces then I don't know what to say, luckily we still have some studios that make much better games even though they don't get as much scores and sales, one of which is Capcom (which thank God are back in the groove, except for fighting games I guess but that may change too) and also hopefully kojima productions among many others.

As a stand a alone piece it's the single most greatest entertainment experience I've had and will always have a place in my heart. How the heartfelt scenes transitioned to action was amazing and I didn't realise it at the time but it kept me in check as it did not get me desenistised like the UA-camr says. I recall that first scene had got me so hard inside I couldn't fathom reality from fantasy. Thus the opening credits played and miraculously I somehow managed to process all the grief and began to understand the context of the game and got me off that depressional plateau I was on. The emotional investment I put into those hours of gameplay has given me mental scars I will carry with me forever. The story was so gripping I feel that it would be a poetic injustice to replay it again as those raw memories I have of it would be tarnished. The last of us was a special piece of work and like the beginning of the video says... some moments in life just lie dormant in the back of your mind impossible to erase. I praise the producers and their team for giving the world such a masterpiece. Words alone can't describe just how great it was, all I can say is that the Last of Us was more than a game it was an escapade of highs and lows, tears and joy which put blockbuster movies to shame, but most importantly a story so touching that even the coldest of people could relate to and consume the phenomenon that the Last of Us was... an absolute epic adventure of the mind and soul..
