This guy has gotten so freakin tight since i can remember his first videos on devil wears prada!! And this is coming from a well trained ear drummer/percussionist. I love the new dw, 1080p, and his amazing attacks combined with originality. His technique is outstanding and i couldnt be more impressed especially with this new animals as leaders song which i love as well!! Keep on Rockin!
I was gunna say lol, his first vids were like all texas in july with hookline n sinner and his oceans will part band or whatever it was called. between him adam and matt is literally what made me start drumming 5 years ago haha keep it up buddy! *****
Luke, what is impressing me is not essentially the skill you have right now or did a couple of years ago, rather than the progress you've made in the dynamics of your playing and being tight in general. You're playing has gone from being a lot flashy with your fast breaks and blast beats, into very dynamic linear beats and grooves witch fits much better. I just love seeing the progress from your rather sloppy playing in "Cinema" for example (witch I loved btw the first time I saw it two years ago) into this very tight playing. This is the thing that drummers often don't understand at first but begin to realize the longer they play the instrument, it isn't all about being in your face, if it's tight, well played and fits the music, then first it becomes great drumming/playing.
Luke, my favorite part about your drumming is your absolutely riveting use of ghost notes. I honestly don't think any drummer in the world plays ghost notes as beautifully and as crisply as you do, and I love how you play them and seamlessly incorporate them into songs with such a fantastic sense of feel. Your beats and sound always manage to totally astound me in every video you post; you rule!
I don't get all the people that comment on your videos in a negative way. You have absolutely phenomenal talent and are an incredible drummer. I only started playing about two years ago or so now and i'm going to be getting some help from a more advanced drummer i know soon to help me grasp more rudiments and more technical time signatures and polyrhythms etc primarily because of how unadvanced i have realised I am watching your skill and how natural it just flows with you. Absolutely killer man, love it
Is anyone gonna talk about the tasty cymbal choke at 0:53 that awesomely transitions back into the heavy rhythmic part? Because it's like my favorite part of the video.
How can anyone thumbs down this video? Or any of your covers for that matter?! Some of the best drumming on UA-cam without a doubt! Been a long time watcher and even the pop stuff like Ellie Goulding, you absolutely smash dude! Makes me wanna get better at drumming!
This is such a tasteful cover! Nice to see you aren't blazing all over it like a few other versions I've seen. Just tight & locked into the grooves. Niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Seriosuly, his ability to keep the essence of the track intact while sprinkling in his own flavor is one of my favorite things about him. I almost like this cover a little more than the original, because this mix doesn't feel like a lot of other covers where the track feels turned down with the drums crashing over the top blowing everything else out, but instead simply pulled more forward and pronounced.
It's mostly because of Cameron Mizell. His mixing & mastering, & sound engineering skills are amazing. He's the owner of Chango Studios & has recorded many of the Post-hardcore bands you here today. Also I believe he records the bands with the Avid Omni HD recording system. Definitely HD quality.
Your drums are sounding great and your drumming gets better with every video you post. It shows the hours of practice you put into the making of every video. Thank you Luke!
When learning a complicated song like do you break it into small parts and learn each part individually? Or do you just play the whole song through and just perfect things as you play it over and over?
***** its very good and helpfull see answers like this..thanks Luke..just one question, you mentioned excesive repetition, for example how many times repeat a hard or complex part? Or you just put a time limit? Thx man, keep rocking
mtalmilitia In my experience, when learning something, there's never a minimum on how much you repeat or practice something. Just keep at it until it's perfect. I always learn the patterns, stickings, counts, etc, then put in accents and and dynamics. Just figure out what works for you man!
For me it depends on how hard the song actually is. If theres a lot of ghost notes, bass drum patterns and a lot of fills i like to break it down into sections, but if it's just odd-time signatures and no specific bass drum/hi-hat patterns or ghost notes i just play it through completely until it's perfect.
dude, you definitely have the most progression out of any drummer on UA-cam that I've seen. Incredible work man, incredibly clean and always a joy to watch. Triple thumbs up if I had an extra thumb
Y'know, I've never really appreciated the drummer in all the bands I listen to but after watching your videos, I've got a whole lotta love for them now! Love this - you're really talented!
As a drummer myself and seeing Luke 3 times, i wished i had seen him play this live. The ghost noting on this is literally Halloween worth of spooky, and got me interested into playing my kit again. I've actually watched this 120% more than 500 times.
BROTHER..... HOLY SHIT THIS WAS COMPLEX AND EXECUTED PERFECTLY. . LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT BRO CAME A LONG WAY FROM WATCHIMG YOU PLAYING WITH YOUR FRIEND RECORDING YOU IN YOUR HOUSE... GOD I THINK I WAS STILL IN HS THEN.. STILL BLOWING MY MIND BUD AWESOME
This is the best and clearest I've heard your drums edited! You can heard everything and it's all so badass as usual. Best cover to me I think. You're a god Luke!
I have been waiting for you to cover this song! Absolutely awesome job well done! Very excited for the up and coming videos! Can't wait to see what's next Luke! Missed you in Utah. Good to see your back and doing amazing things for all of us to watch!
Thing I actually like about AAL is that they're consistent with their rhythmic progressions whilst managing to maintain and retain polyrhythms within said progressions. This is a really happy upbeat song, totes didn't make me want to punch a hole in a wall at all, not even at all and that's good because that means less holes in walls to begin with and less holes in walls to begin with makes for a happy family and dog and cyclops and dog who thinks he's a cat. c:
haha of course its what matt played.. you the man Luke, and i can hear you were going note for note (except for the splash) thats true talent Luke and a super trained ear. well done. Btw matt is the fucking man, no one is writing like he does. NEXT LEVEL SHIT.
Dude, awesome cover yet again. never fail to impress. glad I got the pleasure of meeting you on the unconditional tour! I was the one that took a pic with you after the Dallas show
Absolutely loved this. I’ve seen it many times in my years of following you, but after so many years of learning, it’s like listening to it for the first time all over.
Mitch ZImmerman I know right! Haha I was listening to Volumes cause they have occasional ghost notes, kind of a good basic ghost note rythym, and I was like hey I actually kinda played that! So just took it from there and built off of it.
MJKTool I agree, but Converge doesn't really aim for that style...most of their music is just straight up aggressive yet experimental. I'd like to see this Luke Holland guy pull off a drum cover of either band.
Been watching you grow for the past 4 years...since your August Burns Red cover that I'm pretty sure was shot in your parents basement and you still you have my attention! Love this cover Luke. Your grove tech has grown tremendously. Keep it up!
Was a percussionist in band for 3 years and never learned how to do one handed rolls😂 but in all honesty, Luke is by far the most talented drummer I have ever seen
Check out drum covers by Troy Wright. He's an Aussie that auditioned to be apart of AAL actually. He. Is. A. BEAST. He plays Messhuggah, AAL, Periphery, and Dream Theater cover near PERFECTLY. He's by far my favorite UA-cam drummer. Amazing, talented guy.
Hey Luke, you groove to this song like a BEAST! Really nice fills and subtle things that weren't over-done; a really rad cover to a difficult song. You've come really far over the years and that shows in videos like these - keep it up maan!
One of the best animals as leader covers out there period.

Nope im talkin Like 6 years ago he had a band called oceans will part in highschool Tokka
Dylan Marchese
Ahk, fair enough
The cymbal grab at 0:53 is perfection, in the next few days this will have reached 1 mil views so congrats, dude!
Like A G, I too come from the future to inform you that the video has indeed not only reached '1 mil' views but has proceeded to surpass that mark.
Which one? He squelched 2!
Damn near 2mil views 7 years later, still a great video

he plays them well, however, the best imo has got to be troy wright. Check him out, he is an absolute beast on the kit
Thoughts on Matt Halpern from Periphery?
Thoughts on Matt gartska the one who wrote the part?
Travis Orbin.
Scott Miller I agree, his stuff on I Am King's debut is pretty crazy.
The best cover of physical education 💝

my 5 years old is continuously saying while watching this "HE IS SOOOO GOOD!!!!" keep up the amazing work Luke
Super cool to see you covering more prog stuff! Garstka is a monster, you killed this!
Always impressed with how clean and spot-on your technique is. You never fail to impress!
i feel like only drummers can fully appreciate how amazing this video was
Luke, I have not seen your videos in over two years, but this just really crossed my path again. You are hands-down, the best drummer, ever. Ever.
Still one of the cleanest drum tracks I've ever seen
It's really cool seeing drummers and any musician advance over years of hard work on youtube.
I love the new way more natural sound of your kit!
Everytime I watch you play the drums, your talent amazes me. Keep doing you brother
3:35 - 3:39 - BEAST MODE \m/

He actually got me into AAL! Met him at a Word Alive concert and he's a really cool guy
His style does seem douchey, so I assume that's why. No one should be hitting it just for that though, the drumming is simply too good.
those two subtle high hat kicks at :56, insane. great job luke such an endeavor covering these AAL songs. Much props.
This is such a tasteful cover! Nice to see you aren't blazing all over it like a few other versions I've seen. Just tight & locked into the grooves. Niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Agree
This cover confirms the genius that is Matt Garstka! Amazing job Luke! No one else could have done it better than you (besides Matt ofc)
I feel like your drums have never sounded better(Just my opinion.) Go Remo!
***** Absolutely, good mixing/mastering is a must for professional work. Fantastic playing as well, Matt Garstka is pretty insane.

I'm almost certain that this is the most fun, and challenging song yet.
0:28 is possibly the most aesthetically pleasing crash hit I've ever seen.
it was quite lovely
Gotta agree

You’re a friggin beast dude. Sounds just like Matt. NICE job!
dude, you definitely have the most progression out of any drummer on UA-cam that I've seen. Incredible work man, incredibly clean and always a joy to watch. Triple thumbs up if I had an extra thumb
1:57 probably the easy part.
+Phillip Betts I think is a little bit tough, by the way he breathes, I bet he made some breathing techniques to get prepared for the next part xD
+Phillip Betts Not for the guitarist haha
+Phillip Betts self phyche out time
+Christophe Germain ahaha it's not easy, Tosin hammers on and thumps every note and to play it that fast takes a lot of skill
Christophe Germain the clean part, i have no idea about the part before but it doesn't sound easy
Y'know, I've never really appreciated the drummer in all the bands I listen to but after watching your videos, I've got a whole lotta love for them now!
Love this - you're really talented!
That 3:35 fill....so good.
CircuitsandCoffee I thought that was the easiest thing he had to do honestly it sounds awesome but the grooves are so tough!
+Christian Griffis agreed
As hard as it seems
Imma be honest, its on of the most easiest parts of the song
The whole groove is hard

Such an engaging song, and your drumming was flawless along with the track.

This is so groovy! I wanna see a Volumes cover some day! :D
YES
And now there is one :D
FUCK YES!!!!!

i just about died when you released the preview and heard this song playing. Well worth the wait to see this!
Great job, dudeson!
3:40 that sudden snare crack followed by the two 16ths by the guitar at the end of the fill is crazy
Please tell me how to get better at ghost notes I love this song but im not good at them and I have no clue how to progress at it.
Ha figured it out by myself
Noah Papafagos ha! Only took a month, too.
That's how it was for me. Realizing I didn't.t have to be all heavy handed and metal. Then it just clicked

Chino Lim Ahh okay thanks man
seriously the most insane and best cover i have ever seen in my life and of course its from the one and only luke holland!! holy shit
The reason I love "Djent" so much is because of how talented you have to be to play it.
Animals isn't djent tho, it's just straight prog
Super awesome cover, Luke. Crashing that ride and all. I love the shots of your feet. Please have more of that. Keep up the amazing work.

I challenge you to cover a Converge song. Last Light, Vengeance, Fault and Fracture, Thaw, Black Cloud, to name a few great tracks.
THISSSS
They sound like a wannabe Dillinger Escape Plan band.
MJKTool They are older than DEP, and their music is far more abrasive. I really don't think they sound much alike at all.
Dae Dalus It doesn't matter whose older... I just think Dillinger Escape Plan pull off that disjointed whacky time signature style of songs better.
MJKTool I agree, but Converge doesn't really aim for that style...most of their music is just straight up aggressive yet experimental. I'd like to see this Luke Holland guy pull off a drum cover of either band.
