This is my favorite animals as leaders record. It wasn't so complicated like their new stuff and the parts were so catchy. The groves and guitar parts got stuck in your head.
Non drummer here who's watched a ton of drum reaction content and you're by far my favourite. So much reaction content is people who don't seem genuine or seem like they are pretending, that isn't the case here. Great combination of knowledge and genuine humility, keep doing what you're doing and thanks for helping us appreciate the music.
You should check out the work he does on Victoria. Their new songs are crazy and all of them have playthroughs, though they are guitar and drums together.
yooooo this comment is great, THANKS for mentioning this cause I never knew! I knew about TRAM with Eric Moore and MESTIS but never Victoria! thanks!!!
Ah, Matt... an F'ing timecracker. I'm drooling everytime I hear him. Superb craftsmanship, superb. You can hear the years of practice, he's just sitting in it comfortably. Great talent. Also he beefed up, man 🤩.
@@carljthatsme94estepario is certainly up there, but Matt is noticeably better than him imo. My number one is Luke Holland though. This fucker was covering AAL at the age of 17, then made the absolute monstrosity that is Tendinitis. His technical ability, just like Matt and Estepario, is 10/10, but his feel and creativity are also absurd. I feel like at that level though, like these guys are all capable of playing each others’ stuff. I don’t doubt at all that any of these dudes could spend some time and learn any song in existence and play it perfectly, so technical ability kinda goes out of the question since they’re all already capable of playing just about anything. It’s a good way to weed out popular but not so good drummers though, Lars for example CLEARLY can’t play AAL stuff despite being a big name, so you can easily weed him out of any conversation around best drummers. Another factor would be versatility, some jazz drummers are nuts but can’t play metal to save their lives, and metal drummers vice versa, which is why I respect Matt, Luke and Estepario so much. They have clearly shown an absurd amount of flexibility and adaptation to genres, unlike some drummers who are purely etched into one specific niche.
I was wondering when you would get back around to Garstka! This version of this song is a result of years of playing it live. If you watch his first play through vid of this song, it's very different and doesn't have the little solo section at around 3:53. That section btw is played differently every time I've seen this song live. That original vid was the album version and this is the live version. He pretty much experiments all the time. The guy is a friggin BEAST.
17:19 I have basically no drumming experience apart from a year of drumline in middle school😂 that was ages ago. But damn do I love to watch/listen to this stuff! Love me some AAL. Discovered them 3 years ago, one of my favorite groups now
Great reaction! What I would really love, and haven't seen yet in reactions, is some breakdowns of the time signatures, syncopation and switches bands like AAL use, to learn more about the arrangement of more complex songs musically. I was trying to count 8 at the same part as you, and they kept throwing curveballs. I'd love to hear someone dissect these musical decisions and explain how they make it work.
Having heard this song 200 times, it's fascinating to note where he deems the original composition to be important, and where he feels he can riff and improv.
You know youre at master level when people including myself can't do anything but giggle and laugh while you do some of those ghosty notey fills. Lord have mercy
It's not only drummers clicking on these, bro. I'm a bass player and a guitar player, depending on the day and who's paying me, but I hoover up drum content like it's nobody's business! I do want to be drummer when I grow up, though. So there's that. They couldn't be further from the style of music I play, but AAL is like far and away my favorite band. I see them every time they come to Seattle. We were probably at the same show last they were here. At the Crocodile, right? Dude, I love your reaction vids and your content here. I dig the way you think about and analyze music. We're often intrigued and tantalized by the same things. Keep the content coming, keep on pausing and talking, and Go Hawks!
I didn't know they made a new drum playthrough for PE. It's wild that he original one was amazing but Matt has progressed so much since those early days that it was worth redoing it as a showcase of his improvements... not to mention the marketing Meinl.
This band sold shirts that said "odds are we're better musicians than you" and no one had an issue with it 😂... Other than maybe that guy is from Trapt who told Jason Richardson that he was a better guitarist than he it.
I believe the main guitar riff @ 1:45 approx. can be counted as 17 notes then 15 notes within 32 beats (eight/sixteenth notes, not sure). At least that's how it can be read in the tab I have, scored in this section as 4/4. That's my lay person explanation, don't know if that makes sense
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Currently, there are, and have been for years, a band I can listen to endlessly - perfect to zone out for a cycle etc, always knowing a new detail will jump out
Yes, live in Spokane at the Knitting Factory.... Definitely my number one living drummer... I'm old so Neil is my all time mentor... Danny Carey is my #2 and Aric Improta #3
I would love if you checked out Matts playthroughs of chronostasis, axioma or perennial. They're from his side project with Joshua de la Victoria. Bit more of a jazzy feel than animals, I'm more excited for their new stuff.
I remember in one of your videos saying that you wanted to do a full band playthrough react. May I suggest the Meinl Cymbals full band playthrough of the song "Psychosphere" by Periphery.
It would be interesting to see you react to the Silent Hill 2 Soundtrack. Specifically ‘Promise’, its reprise, and ‘Theme of Laura’. Akira Yamaoka, the composer, is a genius.
You should definitely check out jamie st merat from the band ulcerate. Hes has a live play through of the song dead oceans. Think of it if matt garska played for a death/doom band.
I don’t know if you’re familiar with Brazilian country music, but there are some amazing live performances you’d definitely dig it, such as “Chitãozinho e Xororó feat Zé Ramalho - Sinônimos” they are national legends. Hope you check it out (even if not as a video reaction) 💖 hope you’ll like it! Here’s the video: ua-cam.com/video/7EjIdjKNRls/v-deo.htmlsi=Xf5gS_NvD3IdVWN9
I just can’t with Matt. Like, bro…could you make drummers feel less horrible about their chops?! 😅 Side note: Funny how he and Jay Postones seem to make kinda the same faces and sticking styles.
PLEASE DO A REACTION OF EPIC THE MUSICAL!! YOU ANALYSING NOT ONLY BEATS BUT TEMPO, USE OF INSTRUMENTS, REACURRING THEMES, AND STROY WILL HAVE YOU HOOKED I PROMISE!!
Discussion of bands and appreciation of high-end musicians is pretty normal among muso crowds. I'm not sure how you don't see that? Maybe your don't hang around musicians. Achievements.. lol this youtube channel has nothing to do with my musical resume. Wild comment thh
Ah... People who don't even care to watch the video before leaving a completely empty comment that doesn't regards the video. Can you even differentiate between hollow reaction videos from people who don't even bother to comment during the video they're watching and instead say “Oh, that was sick!” and nothing else, AND a real reaction video of someone enjoying what they're watching, contributing with comments, observations regarding the content? This dude is always doing a whole analysis and commentary about the drumming on the video, giving feedback about... and you come here and compare it to “the laziest and lowest-effort of all the content on the internet”. You should maybe check your own stuff, dear.
This is what I come for. Love me some AAL.
so hyped to see AAL live later this year. matts a beast
That will be a great time
lets go! I'm seeing them for the first time next month as well :>
Hope you have a great time!
saw them in Feb… couldn’t take my eyes off Matt even though Tosin was right in front of me. I have a video on my channel!
17:50 Tony talking about how hard it is to sound like that and Matt casually pushing up his glasses on the freeze-screen cracked me up :D
Haha yea 🤣 he is so good

Matt's one of the best. Of all time. Like way up there. The clarity of his ghost notes is mind blowing.
You should check out the work he does on Victoria. Their new songs are crazy and all of them have playthroughs, though they are guitar and drums together.
Another Victoria enjoyer! Serious hype every time they release a new single
Ive been listening to chronostasis a ton, such a good track, the playthrough is insane too
A man of culture, I see. The 3 new songs are on my primary playlist at the beginning, nothing else gets played before I'm through them.
yooooo this comment is great, THANKS for mentioning this cause I never knew! I knew about TRAM with Eric Moore and MESTIS but never Victoria! thanks!!!
I play his Victoria stuff on UA-cam repeatedly. Insane mastery
Ah, Matt... an F'ing timecracker. I'm drooling everytime I hear him. Superb craftsmanship, superb. You can hear the years of practice, he's just sitting in it comfortably. Great talent. Also he beefed up, man 🤩.
The easiness he gets the ghost notes to sound so good is astonishing.
Best drummer of all time
Amen. It's not a matter of opinion, It's just out right facts
It's his playing, his ability, his dynamics, his concepts....the dude is just other worldly.
Trying to find an argument. El Estarpario is chasing for sure. You look at the legends and even then, Matt is just off the charts.
@@carljthatsme94estepario is certainly up there, but Matt is noticeably better than him imo. My number one is Luke Holland though. @@DrumRollTonyReacts There are some vids of this song where he goes absolutely bonkers. It's just fun seeing what he'll try next.
The most iconic intro from AAL. You know what this song is in about .5 seconds lol
Matt Garstka is so frustratingly good...I identify with that statement. Unreal
Haha yea man!

Haha, awesome. Thx man
I mean fxkn COME ON!!!! Its fxkn ridiculous how good this dude is lol
At 16:51 its 6,6,4,4,6 going down the five toms. Matt finds a way to make even single stroke rolls down the toms sound interesting
Great video! Thanks Tony for the words you helped me a lot, you have no idea!
How he is able to bury that pattern on the hi hat with the backing track before the clean section. That’s text book burying. So clean
Absolutely love watching people see Matt. Hes just on another level

Yes! Animals as leaders is so good! Really cool insights in this video
I really enjoy watching your reactions because you know music , how to read and explain what's happening...love the channel sir ....keep it up. ...👍
Not a musician. Not a drummer. Love that you help me understand WHY I love AAL and Garstka so much.
You know youre at master level when people including myself can't do anything but giggle and laugh while you do some of those ghosty notey fills. Lord have mercy
i'm more into tech death but matt is my favorite drummer. he has chops and groove. he's just so good man.

Deep in the dungeon - Evan Call 🤔

I think he need to listen to frostpunk music especially city must survive. Feelin cold whenever this music starts/
Great reaction! If you want to check out another amazing Meinl video and phenomenal female drummer, check out Camille Bigeault's playthrough of Damar.
did you ever make their live show in seattle? Soon thereafter you bailed on Garstka videos?
had i waited 1-2 minutes he answered my 1st question
😅
