Honestly, this has been the best, straight-to-the-point, no BS explanation of Virtual Desktop I've seen. My PC will be spoilt by my Quest 3 when it arrives, tomorrow. Thank you 👍 I might try AV1, but I'm told my 7900XTX isn't as efficient at encoding as it's nVidia counterpart, so a little experimentation will be required. (I never went above 35ms latency with my Pico 4, and I don't intend to start now).
Huge thanks go out to someone who made me aware of a few things in relation to 160MHz bandwidths with Wi-Fi 6 5GHz bands - Thank you! Someone has also pointed out that lower frame rates also have less compression, as more of the bitrate can go into each frame, I totally forgot to mention that! These are great tips, keep them coming! I hope the video is of some help, PCVR is too good to be impacted by non fine tuned settings 👍
Didnt think about the framerate impact on the compression, that is a good point. But now that I'm thinking about it, AV1 should also have less compression than AV1 10bit (less colour information to encode). Or am I thinking wrong?
Exactly what I needed (after finally figuring out how to use Virtual Desktop on my quest 3 in the first place. I thought the Steam version would work... lol.)
Up to now, this is the best VD setting video i watched. Most of the rest are "best setting click baits". Showing of with no fundamental information. Thabk you !!❤
well made. been using VD since it first cam out and through many versions this has been the most succinct video covering everything 'important' I've watched
I can 100% confirm his advice on switching to a 5GHz when wanting to connect to Virtual Desktop and play Steam games. They were unbearably laggy and stuttered. Thought it was a lost cause. Saw this video and immediately set the Wifi on my laptop and Quest 3 to my 5GHz network and instantly resolved the issue. Smooth as butter now on high settings. Night and day.
@@coolmacatrain9434 I was connected to my 2GHz network. Chugged. Switched over to 5GHz based on his advice and immediately fixed the stuttering. Smooth now.
I'm a sr. network engineer that specializes in wireless and I have a note on your WiFi segment. Moreso than just being on 5Ghz, the wireless protocol like 802.11ac(WiFi 5) or 802.11ax(WiFi 6) matters a lot. I have a WiFi 6E mesh wireless system that allows the Quest 3 to link at 2400Mbps. I'd highly recommend a WiFi 6 or 6E router for the Quest 3. Your stream will of course not use 2400Mbps of bandwidth, but the quality of the wireless connection will be higher at the end of the day. There are technologies in 802.11ax that improve everything.
Hello friend! I have wifi mesh 6 , i have problems with the image at the move to head , the latency is good,is possible that problem for the band 190mhz?? I recived 2040 mbps.. best regards , sorry for my bad english..
@truji_dron2168 Hi, is the router that your headset connects to, connected to your computer with an ethernet cable? That is very important. It is worth going onto the Virtual Desktop discord server for more help if needed. Hope you manage to sort it 👍
Yes conected with cable router at pc , i had pico 4 and i haven't problem, but he saw that quest 3 is more fast that pico 4 and before the band was 1024 and now 2048 mbps, i was think should change band 190mhz at 80mhz ...
@@truji_dron2168 160Mhz can transmit more, but won't work as well if it is a long distance or if there are objects in the way. Does the Quest 3 work okay at 80MHz?
@DayDreamerVR @AshtonCoolman Hi, aren't the regular Ethernet ports on PC and Router usually limited to 1Gbps (1000Mbps)? If this is the case, wouldn't that make the ethernet ports the bottleneck so what's the use of going higher Mbps for the WiFi? Thanks for explaining.
@@stachowi Well first we’d need to confirm where your bottleneck is. If you have a Wifi 6e and Virtual Desktop, and you’re getting choppy performance, then I think the bottleneck is with your PC. While playing a game thats stuttering i’d take off the headset and watch your PC monitor while moving the headset with your hands, and see if its choppy on your monitor. Once you identify the source of the problem we can go from there. My bottleneck was too much 5hz traffic where I live.
Thanks for this extensive explanation. I experienced a lot of stuttering when I was playing Beatsaber (Steam version as well as Rift version)... until I started experimenting with the Bitrate settings... Probably because of your explanation I can find the sweetspot.
Great video! Reallly cleared up some of my questions. Would love to see a video on steam vr settings that optimize performance without doubling up on viritial desktop settings. I swear i have some steam vr settings wrong that is adding lag when i use virtual desktop with it.
I do have one tip. Customize your FOV setting in SteamVR. Try lowering it until you can actually notice a difference. I got to 90% before being able to see any difference. Just make sure you are adjusting the glasses spacer beforehand because maybe you aren't noticing the full FOV possible because the spacer is on a higher setting than needed.
Great tip, I hadn't tried changing the FOV since I had the PICO Neo 3 Link, I don't think the PICO 4 works if I remember correctly. Will try with the Quest 3, thanks👍
I'm running a strix 4080 and a quest 2. Was gonna get a quest 3 but knowing that it won't utilize all those pixels you saved me wasting my money. Thank you
Great video, just a small remark that might be helpful to a few people. The AV1 codecs are only supported by 40-gen nvidia GPUs. So, anyone with an older card (e.g. 3090) or AMD / intel GPU won't be able to use it.
yeah should be like that but, i'm selecting as preferred AV1 codec with an 3080 TI and seems to work just fine, tomorrow i will test the difference between other settings
Hands down the most clear explanation of virtual desktop I've found, coming from HMD Samsung Odyssey all of this connection options where new to me, and every other video almost assumed that I had a Quest 2, thank you greatly, just a small question if you can, I have your graphic card, but I'm on a 5ghz network, just wanna play beat saber wireless at 120fps godlike will 500mbps be enough? Hope my question makes sense, again great video
Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad it was useful 👍 For Beatsaber I would recommend trying to keep the latency as low as possible, so would recommend keeping the bitrate quite low, maybe 100Mbps to test first and then change it from there if you're happy with the latency. Enjoy! 😀
Really clear video and helped demystify some settings for me, thanks! Would be helpful to know if/how SteamVR or ODT settings change your overall setup when playing through VD
Glad it was useful 👍 ODT only affects Oculus Link. The settings in Virtual Desktop change the settings in Steam VR, so if you change the graphical quality setting that will change the 100% resolution in steam vr. So if you then put 150% resolution in steam vr, you are doing 150% of the graphical setting/resolution set in virtual desktop. The other steam vr settings and virtual Desktop's are mostly separate. Hope that helps for the moment, and if I do a video at some point covering this area I'll cover this too 👍
I'd love to see a video where you test whether there's any latency improvement for VD when using the Dlink airbridge. There's very little data out there on the subject. Supposedly you can also establish the same kind of connection with a particular Intel WiFi card.
Im glad people are finding this useful but not as much for me. For instance all you said about ssw and i still have no clue whether ssw is good or bad to have on or automatic or off.
Sorry to hear that. If you have a low powered system, and you want to reach a frame rate that you can't, then turn it on, but you will experience additional latency, ghosting and blurriness. Those issues go away, except for the latency if you have ssw on when set at 120fps. If you are playing a game which has very demanding scenes, and then easy ones, and you don't want ssw on all the time, then automatic will allow it to turn on in those demanding scenes and turn it off when the game is easier to run. If you have it on automatic though, you may experience stutters each time it turns on and off. It is difficult to recommend what to do, as everyone has different priorities. I personally would not use automatic, and would keep ssw always on with 120fps. With some devices though like the PICO 4 you don't have 120fps option, so I would keep it off for those devices. I luckily do have a 4090 though, but if I had a more entry level graphics card, then I would probably consider having ssw always on at lower frame rates. I hope this helps 👍
@@theghastlygamer5326 Depending on your headset then, if you can do 120fps with SSW always enabled that's what I would do for all games. If you have the Quest Pro or PICO 4 then they can't do 120, so if set to 72/90fps I would leave ssw off 👍
I don't no, I hadn't even heard of Venmo until you mentioned it. UA-cam has the option of doing Super Buy's, but I only recently got over the threshold for using things like that, and hadn't considered anything else
Great guide. A few questions: (1) what should Steam render resolution be for Q3 using Virtual Desktop? The recommendation used to be 100% but I have heard it should be higher for Q3. (2) does using my router’s 10Gb port make any difference to VD over a 1Gb port? (3) Does the Q3 image quality benefit from any settings in the Nvidia control panel? One of the VR tweaking difficulties is that there are settings in various places (control panel, streamer app., VD, Steam) and no good guide to get the best wireless streaming visual quality with a solid frame rate taking all settings into consideration.
Keep render resolution it steam at 100% and change the vr graphical quality setting in VD as that does the same thing, if you do both then it doubles the effect of increasing the resolution. A 10GB port won't make any difference with the bitrate being used. I keep all other settings in Nvidia control panel etc as default, and just adjust VD 👍
The graphics quality setting in virtual desktop sets the encode resolution. You need that as high as possible with steam vr at 100% for the best image. It is better to have ultra/Godlike in Virtual Desktop, and 100% in steam vr rather than high in virtual desktop and 150% in steam vr. Supersampling in steam vr (higher than 100%) when you have ultra/Godlike in Virtual Desktop will add almost no visible difference/minimal improvement but at a high performance cost. So stick to Ultra 👍 Hope that helps
I had to disable video buffering, at least when using av1...oddly unless I did that id get these moments where my latency would randomly climb into the hundreds! Disabling video buffering never saw it get over 55! (13900k, 32gig ram, rtx 4080, 5ghz band, 200bit rate, godlike, 90fps) ...Not sure why it was just av1!
Okay this oldguy needs help! I have a 4090 but don't mind a wire. Is the quality the same between Virtual Desktop and the link cable? I don't have a fancy 6E router and my pc is connected to the internet wirelessly. I mostly sim race... do i need this program?
Great video, I have a question on the wifi connection. My PC has wifi and is plugged into my router. Would it make sense for me to connect to my PC's wifi or should I connect to the wifi on my router? For sims I am right in front of the PC but for other games I will be closer to the router, cheers.
Some people find the WiFi hot-spot can be unreliable from a PC. Could be worth trying and comparing between your Pc's hot-spot and router. The recommended way would usually be through your router 👍
I have a crappy wifi5 mesh router. It’s awful. I just go cabled… virtual desktop is good, but I stick to quest link, and have enjoyed half life Alyx quite a lot! It’s very very nice!
The AV1 10 bit has a wider variation of colours. So if you were looking at a wall that goes from dark blue to light blue for example it won't have colour bands or be as stepped as the colour changes. Difficult to explain, but imagine more colours available across the whole colour spectrum. AV1 10 bit should be the best image 👍
Hello. I purchased Quest 3 and it is due to arrive. What I am not clear on is: 1) What is the difference between Virtual Desktop Streamer and Virtual Desktop Wireless version. What is the purpose of Virtual Desktop Streamer which seems to be free? 2) Is there no way to use Virtual Desktop by having the Quest 3 connected with a Link cable? So without necessarily relying on wireless transmission? Why the wireless limitation and not implement a wired mode as well?
You have to pay for the Virtual Desktop app on the headset, and it uses the Virtual Desktop software on the PC to work. Don't get Virtual Desktop on steam. You can get a usb c to ethernet adapter and connect the headset to your router with an ethernet cable, but with the PICO headsets this has been a bit unreliable, I haven't tried it with the Quest 3. You can use a usb c cable with Oculus Link with the Oculus PC software for a wired experience, and I actually think you can get a better image than with Virtual Desktop, especially with racing sims if you increase the bitrate to 960Mbps in the Oculus Debug tool (you have to copy and paste in 960 for that to work). Hopefully this will make more sense when you start to explore the headset 👍
Does having a wifi 6ghz router vs 5ghz router make a difference at all? Like, is it using 1200mpbs or the whole 2400mpbs if you use 6ghz? I already have a wifi 6 5ghz router so is the speed at all influential here or is it all about the protocol? Also which codec recommended if I use a 3080 ti?
The maximum bitrate with virtual desktop is 400Mbps, so you will be very unlikely to notice any difference by going to a WiFi 6e router. I would recommend H265 (HEVC) 10 bit codec at 200 Mbps 👍
You should be able to access your router settings in an Internet browser, usually you need to type 192.168.1.1 into a browser, or your router might have another address written somewhere on the bottom of the router. From there I would recommend giving your 2.4 and 5ghz bands different SSD's (names). Then you can connect your headset to the 5GHz name, and not to the 2.4GHz 👍
No, WiFi 6 has plenty of bandwidth. The main difference is that 6e should reduce latency slightly, and might not have as much interference on its band, however the realistic improvement in latency is maybe just a couple of ms, which won't be noticeable 👍
Boosted clock rates will help with the headset processing the stream, but the headset can manage the stream without boosted clock rates, so it is mainly the performance of your pc, and WiFi signal that matters 👍
Thanks for the video, I was wondering if you've experienced the bit rate tanking with the Q3. Using my Q2 I get a rock solid 1200Mbps but on the Q3 I'm seeing that figure plumit dipping down at times to as low as 600Mbps briefly and barely reaching 1200Mbps. I've improved the results in the headset by tweaking the settings but the bit rate still isn't stable and I was wondering if you've seen this? i7 gen 12 16GB DDR4 RTX3060ti Dedicated WiFi 6 router Cat 8 ethernet to PC Router set to channel 106
It happens to me too. I thought it was VD doing an initial check and sometimes the bandwidth is lower due to traffic so it sets it as lower. I'm not sure why it doesn't just let us set these things ourselves. Regardless there is some kind of congestion going on. I'd recommend you take a look at your router settings and make sure there aren't other clients on there or at least prioritize your PC over the other with QoS settings. Also all the standard stuff like checking the channel you are on and making sure it's the best one.
When you change the resolution in Virtual Desktop, you will find that is the new 100% point in Steam. So it changes the steam per eye resolutions. If you were to put a higher super sampling, say 200% in steam, then it would double the resolution in Virtual Desktop. Changes in steam won't change the encode resolution, so super sampling that way has very minimal, if any, gain. So I would recommend keeping steam to 100%, and just change the resolution in virtual desktop. Hope that helps 👍
Did they change the godlike resolution? I tested what you said about it auto switching the default within steamvr and it puts mine at 3706x3936 after I choose godmode, ultra for me is 3292x3408. @@DayDreamerVR
@@justinmm1988 They haven't changed the resolution on Godlike, but if you have it set to auto then it will guess what your system can manage. I leave mine on manual at 100%. Like I say you won't notice much, if any difference above 100% in steam vr with Godlike in Virtual Desktop, but your frame rate will be lower. Hope that helps 👍
Running at ultra would be the best option, but if you can't run the game on ultra and are running at high or lower then turn this on, it's a free visual clarity boost 👍
@DayDreamerVr Only just came across you and loving the content! May I request a video idea on something I'm failing to find any information on. I'm wondering how to play multiplayer games like Call of Duty within a app on Q3 without lag, I've tried Immsered,VD and Big screen but nothing seems to deal with the lag quite right which is really annoying for me! If its not possible maybe the video could speak about why its not possible and when it maybe it will be possible? hopefully you read this!
Awesome, thank you for the feedback and glad my videos are useful 👍 In relation to lag and playing a 2D game, Virtual Desktop will be the best option, and the settings in the "settings tab" are the ones that will fine tune how much lag. I'll try to do a video as I think that a good idea and would probably help a few people, thanks 👍
@@DayDreamerVR I tried VD but its not very good if the computer isn't connected via a ethernet cable, today I tried Quest link via cable and it was great but I hate the huge white back ground and the fact the xbox controller was also zooming the screen in and out lol
@@onitno5707 This is for flat screen game in VR I take it? Yeah, for streaming wirelessly with virtual desktop it is best to have your pc connected to your router with an ethernet cable unfortunately
Hm, I have this weird thing where it seems opposite of what most people are experiencing, I have a quest 3 and wifi 6E, generally at about 2400Mbps, and ingame fps is in most games roundabout 90fps.. If I use virtual desktop to run something with steamvr, it will run very smoothly but the controllers don't show up.. If I on the other hand run them using oculus directly then everything works except the lag is absolutely horrendous, looking like maybe 10fps, even though according to the vds statistics I'm having below 50ms latency and over 90fps.. If on the other hand I use openvr yet I use opencomposite then most games just either instantly crash or sometimes extremely distort the image, as if I'm looking at a funhouse mirror. However, here's the weirdest part, if I use a steamvr game that is listed in steam, the controllers show up, however if I launch a game that uses steamvr but wasn't installed via steam, the controllers don't show up. Previously I had a Rift, and this was never an issue, the controllers always worked regardless
That is weird! Are you using Steamvr as the openxr runtime in steam settings? Make sure the option for 'track controllers in vr' is selected in virtual desktop. Have you tried oculus link over usb to rule out any issues with your WiFi setup? If I find any other options I'll update. Could be worth going on the virtual desktop discord to see if they know what could be causing it 👍
@@DayDreamerVR Thanks for the reply mate, well I think I've checked all those boxes but to be sure I'll have another look, as for the link cable, I've only gotten my quest 3 a few days ago and the link cable is still in the mail lol, so I'll have to test that later. As for the wifi, well, virtual desktop in regular desktop mode is flawless, also the running games in steamvr the latency is great, but in straight up oculus mode it's horrible, while weirdly enough the virtual desktop stats are saying there is perfectly normal latency, like 30 to 40ms, so it doesn't seem to be the wifi... But the only way to know for sure I guess is by trying link
@@-a6833 yeah it's unlikely to be WiFi related. Try settings the device graphical settings back to default in the Oculus PC software, just so you know that isn't above recommended. Also worth reinstalling the Oculus drivers: Install the latest Oculus drivers: Close the Oculus PC app. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run command. Enter C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-drivers. Open oculus-driver. Open the Oculus PC app and then try to connect your headset again.
@@DayDreamerVR I really appreciate you taking the time to help troubleshoot man, but ehm, at risk of me sounding dumb, how would I change the settings in the oculus pc application? I have reinstalled it a few times, but it doesn't recognize my Quest 3 to begin with (maybe due to lack of having used link before), it's the same software as I've used with my rift before, I don't think there's any other software on the meta website from what I can see.. But this software doesn't have any graphical settings or anything by the looks of it, it's the classic oculus pc app.. Edit: I forgot to mention lol, another weird thing is that in steam vr home the controllers do appear, as meta quest 3 controllers no less, the second I go into any game they disappear
@-a6833 no problem 👍 If it's a new install then the settings are likely to be default. In the app, in the device tab, your Quest 3 should be an option when it's connected (you might have to connect with a USB cable) and you can change resolution and refresh rate. That is really weird about the controllers in the steam vr home/gaming. I'll see what I can think might be the issue, but definitely worth checking on the Virtual Desktop Discord
Some people say it is worth it, but I really don't think it is. If you have a Wi-Fi 6 5Ghz 160MHz band then the bandwidth is 2400Mbps,which is the same for WiFi 6e. The bitrates in Virtual Desktop are also very low in comparison (200Mbps for most codecs, and 400Mbps for H264+). You shouldn't see any noticeable difference going to WiFi 6e, although some people say they do, I'm not convinced.
Will wifi 5, 5ghz band ever be maxed out? (assuming it's the only device on that band). Is it necessary to buy a router with wifi 6e to get the best quality?
Hmmmm, If you are running at 72 or 90fps with spacewarp off, then I would try 120fps with spacewarp always on/enabled, as this should give a smoother experience but require less load on your gpu. Then see what graphical setting you can get to 👍
Hello. Is Virtual Desktop for Meta and Pico the same program or not? That is, if I bought it for Pico 4, is it possible to activate this version for Meta Quest?
It is the same app, however if you buy it once on a meta device you can use that purchase on all meta devices, but if you want to use it on a Pico device you would have to buy it again on PICO. Once you buy it on PICO you can use it on all PICO devices 👍
Can I use the quest 3 as a plain monitor for my pc or mac? I dont mean games or anything, just as a plain external monitor as if the quest 3 was an external monitor connected to my laptop.
There is a free app called immersed which will let you use it and have up to 5 screens! Or the Meta Horizon Workrooms app which let's you use it for 3 monitors 👍
Viewed this vid for 4th time, i have rtx3080 quest2/quest3 wifi6 router xiaomi ax3200, and powerfull ryzen 7 5800x CPU, but stutters, low fps and latency aren't great, especially the fact that before i've updated quest 2 to quest 3, cpu and router, my latency and overall gaming experience were better, i did so much games in VR and i really enjoyed them, buy now something happened, my max fps on something like blade and sorcery even on lowest possible graphics are around 50-60, and latency from 48 up to 160, is horrible, i dunno what else i can do. Any advice?
What is your cpu and gpu usage whilst playing? Could be worth checking with fpsvr. What graphical setting do you have it on in virtual desktop? - I would probably stick to high/ultra, and check in steam vr that your resolution is at 100%. I take it you are connected from your pc to your router with an ethernet cable? And make sure you are connected to a 5ghz band. I'd also recommend going onto the Virtual Desktop discord channel to discuss the issue on there as they may be aware of any specific issues that could cause this. Could also be worth trying turning your router off and back on to see if that helps at all-i had an issue with my router once that a restart helped. Hope you manage to get it sorted 👍
Dumb question but I mainly use airlink, might have to go vd if I get a quest 3 because as of now airlink doesn't support quest 3 new features. If you set the god like resolution setting what should you leave steam resolution at?
Sorry to hear that, mesh WiFi can cause a bit of a problem unless all of the are connected with an ethernet cable, as each signal between each mesh could be less than perfect WiFi. I would recommend going next to the router that your pc is connected to by ethernet, and seeing how it then performs. If you are already doing that and it's bad then I would recommend checking the virtual desktop performance overlay to help identify the issue, hope you manage to sort it 👍
@@DayDreamerVR Thanks for your advice. I was able to figure out I wasn't plugged directly into my hub but instead plugged into a different one. Which it has to be plugged into the same hub or router that is broadcasting the wifi. I forgot i switched it a long time ago. :)
I recently tested a less expensive 6E router (TP-Link AXE5400 - $180) against a way more expensive 6E router (ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 - $550) and there was a big difference in connection speed and consistency. The TP-Link maxed at 1200 and fluctuated a lot while the Asus held a constant 2401. My setup has the router within 6 feet of my headset in the same room. I noticed way better image quality with the Asus. So not all 6E routers are equal.
@@rangerkayla8824 The visual quality was also noticeably worse with the TP-Link and the connection speed fluctuated down quite a lot. That’s what sold me on the Asus. I also should have noted that both routers were brand new, at stock settings (except for turning off the 2.4 and 5.0 radios), and updated to the latest firmware.
I need help, I use the cable because my wireless is choppy AF! So changed the router settings to 5ghz and connected to that. I’m right next to the router also I’m with virgin on Gig1 download speed what am I doing wrong is there more settings I need to change
Is your pc connected to the router with an ethernet cable? What are your PC specs? Start with virtual desktop settings on potato with a bitrate of 60ms and test it whilst monitoring the Virtual Desktop performance overlay. Then slowly increase the settings. It would be worth going on to the Virtual Desktop Discord channel as it is easier to problem solve with them there than over UA-cam. Hope you manage to get it sorted. My video here might also help: ua-cam.com/video/7ycwzv3XpKU/v-deo.html
I would say that if they were all set at 200Mbps, AV1 would be the best, however H264+ can go upto 400Mbps on virtual desktop, so might be better for racing sims.
Unfortunately it's only wireless with Virtual Desktop, however some VR headsets (PICO headsets and the Quest 3) can be connected to your router with a USB c to ethernet adapter and ethernet cable, but this can be unreliable 👍
Weird, you buy it in the same way as any game from the standalone store and it should show up. It's definitely not on any of the tabs in your library? Worth trying to turn off and back in the headset? Hope you manage to get it sorted 👍
@@DayDreamerVR Thanks for the reply. I just bought the Quest 3 and it seems to work fine. I wanted to see the difference between VD and Meta's default solution for connecting to PC via wireless but VD does not show up as an app anywhere when I look in my apps via the headset.
Hi very interesting thank you, I was wondering if you can help me with my problem, when I launch desk top and activate steam vr, in the vr room, the line are waving when I turned my head left or Wright, so in my game it’s terrible. But if I activate oculus app with steam vr, in the vr room, everything is nice. I uninstall geforce and I don’t have notification in desktop telling me a app can provide complication except my antivirus. I close the antivirus but nothing change, let me know if you now a solution, thank you and have a nice day.
That sounds like a really weird issue! The only thing I can suggest is to take a look at the virtual desktop performance overlay when you are in steam to see if any of the figures look too high or indicate a problem. It is worth asking on the Virtual Desktop discord channel as well as they are very helpful and might know the problem. Hope you manage to sort it 👍
No, Virtual Desktop on its own will run with openvr/steam vr. There is an announcement in the discord channel that there is an openxr option, but up until now everything has worked without it 👍
Hey, I have Acer Triton laptop with RTX3080TI, 32 gigs of ram, Intel i9 with boost option and Asus mesh WiFi6 router(s) connected to 1Gb/s fiber wire. Would you/someone be so kind to advice some options (more or less) for this setup? Thank you!
Probably Ultra, 72fps, space warp off, h.265 10 bit codec at 200 Mbps bitrate. Video buffering on. Steam vr resolution 100%. Give that a try and monitor the performance overlay to see how it performs 👍
Can’t get past 110 bit rate on AV1 10 bit Quest 3. (Even if you move the slider way more past 110 bit rate, the number doesn’t change) Have it in god mode 120FPS running on 4090 WiFi 6. Anyone knows why?
On the computers tab, what GHz band does it show you as connected to, and what connection speed does it show? The reason why it won't go any further when you move the slider up is because your connection is too week/slow. So make sure you're on a 5GHz band, and that you are closer enough to your router. Also is your pc connected to your router with an ethernet cable? If not then that also could be why.
I found VD to be not as useful for me, made no difference using Airlink or VD, and then found out VD doesn't even work with usb cable, uninstalled and now PC says mic is disabled on my quest 3 since....so annoying.
Can't fix it, tried lots of thing turning off and on this and that but still no mic detected on airlink anymore, going to try factory reset later when I have more time
Yes, the main things to reduce ms latency you can do are: lower the resolution (Godlike is the highest setting), reduce bitrate, increase fps/refresh rate 👍
I have a Pico 4 and use VD. My setup is a Asus wifi 6 router that is plugged into my Sky Router which is not wifi 6. But my Internet speed is 1 giga bit. So i have the pico connected to the Asus router, but only get aroud 850mb - 1200mb when i launch VD. How do you get over 2000mb ??? Have i got my routers setup wrong? Or do i need to make changes in my router settings? I have a very top end PC with a RTX 4090. Do I need a wifi 6e router to get higher bandwidth than I'm getting with my wifi 6 router? Will wifi 6e work with Pico 4? Have got my current routers setup wrong? Help !!!
In your routers settings check what bandwidth it is set on (options are usually 20, 40, 80, 160). If you do have 160, then try that 👍 The PICO 4 doesn't support Wi-Fi 6e, so still with Wi-Fi 6 for the moment. If you don't have a 160MHz bandwidth on your router then don't worry, you won't notice any real difference between up to 1200 or upto 2400, and the bitrate is at maximum 400Mbps in Virtual Desktop, hope that helps 👍
@@deathifyin2959 if you have it disabled in virtual desktop then I don't know why it's coming on, but you could always look to set a maximum fps in steam vr. It's a new feature that I've not had the chance to look at yet and I can't remember what it is called, but if you are managing to reach a set fps constantly then set that as the max and see if that helps. I'll check it out myself asap and if I find anything I'll update here 👍
I used ASUS RT-AX 30000 for Q3, but only could see 1200Mbps in VD, although this router spec WiFi 6 ax can be up to 2400Mbps. May I know anyone has any idea about how to reach 2400Mbps ? thanks. My 5Ghz used 160Hz bandwidth.
As long as the 160MHz is on you should see 2400 with the Quest 3 in VD. I don't know what else to try, hopefully someone else will respond or could be worth asking on the VD Discord 👍
A brilliant explanation of the how's and why's of VD, especially useful for us new Q3 owners who want to make the most of PCVR. Huge thanks.
Honestly, this has been the best, straight-to-the-point, no BS explanation of Virtual Desktop I've seen. My PC will be spoilt by my Quest 3 when it arrives, tomorrow. Thank you 👍
I might try AV1, but I'm told my 7900XTX isn't as efficient at encoding as it's nVidia counterpart, so a little experimentation will be required.
You're welcome Bro, thank you very much for your excellent video. We are currently sharing your video in a German forum because it is so good.

well made. been using VD since it first cam out and through many versions this has been the most succinct video covering everything 'important' I've watched

Best video that describes each individual setting. Great work! Thanks!!!
Very comprehensive guide. Thanks so much for this! All the settings now make sense and I can make educated adjustments to find what works best for me.

I'm a sr. network engineer that specializes in wireless and I have a note on your WiFi segment.
Thanks for explaining.

what are your settings? I feel like i've been getting stutters and tears... kind of pissed off considering i have an amazing rig@@blastofo

Hope that helps for the moment, and if I do a video at some point covering this area I'll cover this too 👍
@@DayDreamerVR Appreciate the wisdom, thank you!
@@DayDreamerVR i have 2080ti
@@theghastlygamer5326 Depending on your headset then, if you can do 120fps with SSW always enabled that's what I would do for all games. If you have the Quest Pro or PICO 4 then they can't do 120, so if set to 72/90fps I would leave ssw off 👍
Thanks for the video! Really helpfull

For my questions, assume a 4090 and high end CPU with Godlike set in VD. Thank you.
@@DayDreamerVR Thank you! I appreciate your detailed reply.
@@DayDreamerVR In steam on my pro it says default is 150% should i keep that or set to 100% and just use high/ultra on my 3080 ?

The link cable with Oculus link can be a much better image if you set the bitrate to 960Mbps in the Oculus debug tool, so definitely worth a try 👍

It is a great game! Enjoy 👍
AV1 vs AV1 10 Bit? What is the difference? Are these the best to use with Quest 3?
The AV1 10 bit has a wider variation of colours. So if you were looking at a wall that goes from dark blue to light blue for example it won't have colour bands or be as stepped as the colour changes. Difficult to explain, but imagine more colours available across the whole colour spectrum. AV1 10 bit should be the best image 👍
@@rangerkayla8824 Thank you 😀 AV1 10 bit has apparently slightly more latency than HEVC and H264, but I haven't noticed any more latency 👍

Hello.
I purchased Quest 3 and it is due to arrive.
What I am not clear on is:
1) What is the difference between Virtual Desktop Streamer and Virtual Desktop Wireless version.
@@DayDreamerVR so kind. Thx!
@grillodon no problem, enjoy your new headset 😃
Does having a wifi 6ghz router vs 5ghz router make a difference at all?
Like, is it using 1200mpbs or the whole 2400mpbs if you use 6ghz? I already have a wifi 6 5ghz router so is the speed at all influential here or is it all about the protocol?
Also which codec recommended if I use a 3080 ti?
The maximum bitrate with virtual desktop is 400Mbps, so you will be very unlikely to notice any difference by going to a WiFi 6e router. I would recommend H265 (HEVC) 10 bit codec at 200 Mbps 👍
how can I chose which band it connects with? every time I connect its random, sometimes 2.4, sometimes 5.
@@DayDreamerVR thank you!
@@p5rsona No problem, hope you get it sorted okay 👍
Is the difference between wifi 6 and 6e actually noticeable in terms of visual quality and clarity?
No, WiFi 6 has plenty of bandwidth. The main difference is that 6e should reduce latency slightly, and might not have as much interference on its band, however the realistic improvement in latency is maybe just a couple of ms, which won't be noticeable 👍
thanks a lot
You're welcome, pleased it was useful 👍
so, if you choose to use SSW, would you see a benefit in performance by turning on boosted clock rates?
Boosted clock rates will help with the headset processing the stream, but the headset can manage the stream without boosted clock rates, so it is mainly the performance of your pc, and WiFi signal that matters 👍
Thanks for the video, I was wondering if you've experienced the bit rate tanking with the Q3.
Using my Q2 I get a rock solid 1200Mbps but on the Q3 I'm seeing that figure plumit dipping down at times to as low as 600Mbps briefly and barely reaching 1200Mbps.
I've improved the results in the headset by tweaking the settings but the bit rate still isn't stable and I was wondering if you've seen this?
i7 gen 12
16GB DDR4
RTX3060ti
Dedicated WiFi 6 router
Cat 8 ethernet to PC
Router set to channel 106
I haven't noticed that, but will keep an eye out. Hope it gets sorted for you 👍
It happens to me too.
You can turn off automatic bitrate in the desktop app under the options tab, hopefully that will help keep a more stable bitrate 👍
@@DayDreamerVR this helps a lot, I've got a smooth experience now it just strange that the bitrate isn't solid like on the Quest 2.
Where im confused is > Why a resolution setting if the per eye is set in steam vr? Doesn't that cause a conflict?
Hope that helps 👍
short question: Snapdragon Game Super Resolution on or off with quest 3 and RTX2080TI?
Running at ultra would be the best option, but if you can't run the game on ultra and are running at high or lower then turn this on, it's a free visual clarity boost 👍
@DayDreamerVr Only just came across you and loving the content! May I request a video idea on something I'm failing to find any information on.

Also worth reinstalling the Oculus drivers: Install the latest Oculus drivers:
Close the Oculus PC app.
Thanks! I have 4090. Is it worth getting 6E dedicated router instead of a WiFi 6 one? Will the extra bandwidth be useful, along with cleaner channel?
Some people say it is worth it, but I really don't think it is. If you have a Wi-Fi 6 5Ghz 160MHz band then the bandwidth is 2400Mbps,which is the same for WiFi 6e. The bitrates in Virtual Desktop are also very low in comparison (200Mbps for most codecs, and 400Mbps for H264+). You shouldn't see any noticeable difference going to WiFi 6e, although some people say they do, I'm not convinced.
@@DayDreamerVR thank you!
Will wifi 5, 5ghz band ever be maxed out? (assuming it's the only device on that band). Is it necessary to buy a router with wifi 6e to get the best quality?
Not necessary to get a Wi-Fi 6e router, WiFi 5 5GHz is still good for the moment, but future headsets might need faster WiFi speeds 👍
Testing quest2 vs Quest3 im not sure if i can take advantage of the better resolution with my ryzen 3600 and 3060ti

I'd leave Steam resolution at 100%, and just have Virtual Desktop on Godlike for resolution 👍
No matter what I do and after getting a new 4070 super asgards wrath 1 looks awful on WiFi. And I have a mesh WiFi 6 router.
@VirtualRobotsRevolt Awesome, so glad it's easily sorted 👍
2:43 that is why my Q3 look as good, or slightly better, than my Reverb G1, even with the compression of the wireless connection.
how to turn on side by side mode in virtual deskrtop
I recently tested a less expensive 6E router (TP-Link AXE5400 - $180) against a way more expensive 6E router (ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 - $550) and there was a big difference in connection speed and consistency. The TP-Link maxed at 1200 and fluctuated a lot while the Asus held a constant 2401. My setup has the router within 6 feet of my headset in the same room. I noticed way better image quality with the Asus. So not all 6E routers are equal.
I did the same and the ROG rapute was worse!! how weird. virtual desktop said AXE5400 is great for 6E.
@@rangerkayla8824 no. read the post again. they state AX routers have issues, not AXE. did u read the post properly?

So is it better to use the H.264+ for Sim Racing ? I thought the new AV1 were the best codec in use with Quest 3 ?
I would say that if they were all set at 200Mbps, AV1 would be the best, however H264+ can go upto 400Mbps on virtual desktop, so might be better for racing sims.

Can this run with the cable rather than wireless?
Unfortunately it's only wireless with Virtual Desktop, however some VR headsets (PICO headsets and the Quest 3) can be connected to your router with a USB c to ethernet adapter and ethernet cable, but this can be unreliable 👍
Cheers! i'll just buy a new router, they are cheap enough these days@@DayDreamerVR
I just bought VD from Meta but it does not show up as an app in my Quest 3. How do I access it? Thanks.

Hope you manage to sort it 👍
Thank,S for the information, but I was wondering, do I need to install openxr ?
No, Virtual Desktop on its own will run with openvr/steam vr. There is an announcement in the discord channel that there is an openxr option, but up until now everything has worked without it 👍
Thank you for the information and have a nice day
