Virtual Desktop is a total must have for every Quest / Pico user. Every other solution cannot compete with this one. The developer is very supportive and cares about every single issue. Tweaking the settings to get VR games running properly on a mid-range PC needs quite a lot more fiddling around with settings and knowledge on how resolution, VRAM, CPU+GPU and in-game graphics settings (especially texture size and DLSS) are working together. Most content creators do have a RTX 4080 GPUs or higher, so almost every game will run pretty good even with high standard settings. But if you have a RTX 2070 SUPER or RTX 3070 Laptop things are very different. You need to consider Codec Type, VRAM usage a lot and in some games like No Man's Sky or Kajak Mirage VR there is no way around using SSW to get a smooth gameplay with a decent visual quality. In the end a lot comes down to personal preference too. Some people may like a buttersmooth 90fps experience more than crisp graphis, others can't stand a single stutter. But i think it's important for the VR market and especially for new users, who may have used standalone to date and want to try PCVR, to know that they don't need a high end GPU to run VR. Of course sacrifices need to be made if you run VR on a RTX 2070 with only 8GB of VRAM. It's possible, but unfortunately not in quick and easy steps.
The real message here is that you need to learn how to use VD, so this video is a baseline for beginners to start with. As for all content creators having an RTX 4080 😂 I only just upgraded from a 2080 TI
@@MacInVR my fastest GPU is still a RTX 4070 with 12GB, which i would consider to be in the midrange area, but i also have PCs with an RTX 2070S, RTX 3070 and RTX 3070 Laptop, which all have 8GB of VRAM (and every system has different CPUs too). The baseline to start with VR and VD for people with those type of systems needs to consider VRAM, STEAM VR and in-game settings and how to measure the maximum performance on those type of systems and then go up with certain settings to get the best performance and/or visuals possible. There is basically no real beginners guide available how to run PCVR as a total newbie and explanation how all of this works to understand where to optimize depending on your individual preferences. But i guess that would just miss the point here, since this needs to be explained in-depth in a longer video with real-life examples. And those are not quick and easy steps.
Should I use VD if I have a rtx3070 32 gb of fast ram and I9? I have always used steam vr to play my games and have issues with stutters, shakes and black judders. Would VD help any of this? Thanks
Give it a try. Your system is perfectly capable of running on high setting (streamer tab). Meta has a very good refund policy, so if you use VD for less than 2 hours and you don't like it, you can get a full refund. However, if you're getting the same problems with VD (stutter/shakes), then there is something wrong with your setup so jump over to my discord for further help 😉
I've just had a bad issue with virtual desktop. Despite having a decent AX6000 Asus router, the bitrate was showing 17mbps in games (air link and steam link were the same). I tried everything and formatting windows and resetting the router didn't help. Now I have discovered the fix and it wasn't what I imagined. Virtual desktop was using my CPU onboard graphics (AMD 7700X). Every game looked terrible and I couldn't increase the bitrate because it only went up to 17mbps. So if you get this issue, go into 'device manager' and look under display adaptors. The cpu onboard graphics will be there. Just disable it (or disable it in the bios) and it will then use your main graphics card instead. I was at my wits end until I found this. I suspect it happened after AMD released an update on its software/drivers. So keep that in mind if this happens to you👍
These virtual desktop refresh videos are a treat. Thanks for always putting these out. Once I went wireless with your first video, I can't go back to wires. I also use a power line adapter to my studio. Great mention of it here! 🎉
Unfortunately, i have a connection problem with the VD app. I install windows again, I restart the quest 3 and reinstalling the vd app on Quest 3 and the pc, but whatever I do, the vd app can't find my pc, the app problem suddenly start 1 week ago, before that I easily connect to my computer without any problem. I also don't add any app or change anything to my pc. Also, the Steam link app and air link apps are working without problem, and I use them right now for my pc vr gaming. This is really ridiculous for the paid app to have this kind of problem.
The requirement for Ethernet surprisingly was not an issue for me! I can run it wirelessly using a TP-Link HX220 AX1800 router from the opposite end of the house. Gigabit speeds from the router and i get a quarter of that in my room, 120mbps bitrate for streaming (couldnt do 200mbps because apparently AV1 adds a ton of latency above 120mbps strangely, i need to verify if this is still an issue). All I had to do to make this work reliably is use my PC as a hotspot! This surprisingly works and i get 866mbps link on the headset. This may be worth a try for anyone who cannot get ethernet or a powerline to their room.
Just came across this video, I've set my Quest 3 up as suggested but when I try to play Elite Dangerous (in ship, not on foot) I only have a screen in front of me, I started the game in VR mode and apart from the screen I'm actually in VR space around me.. Any idea what's wrong. I know Odyssey is 2D only.
Hi, even though i have a quest 3 with wifi 6e and my router is 6ghz the connection speed is showing less like 1100 - 1924 instead of 2401. What should i do?
Also, there is another problem, when I'm playing pcvr, it just randomly stops and goes back to normal and it does this every 5 seconds like it spikes up really high and then goes down and it's completely unplayable
hello i need help please my pc is not detected in the headset application yet i put my login the headset is connected to wifi and the router is ethernet Thanks
I dont know about anyone else but when i launch steam vr i get these weird lines that go across my vr pov i want help with this. Could it be my computer or a problem in my settings
@@MacInVR oh thank god for that hahah. I was really hoping I wouldn’t have to use a cable or airline to play my oculus pc games. I’ve decided I’m gonna get something called the puppis s1 which SUPPOSEDLY gives you a way better wireless play so if it works I can’t wait to be playing wireless pc
@MacInVR sorry for the bland way I put that question. When playing a steam game using virtual Desktop, you can press both thumb sticks that bring up the system / game info. Near the top right shows resolution and mine keeps jumping between 100 and 150.
Yeah but there’s a second part that I have to do that says “in the app, accept the prompt to allow access or manually enter your meta user name” so what do I do
My connection to my shadow power pc breaks all fiew minutes, not in the same network and the the usb 3 doesnt work with quest link either. What to do ?
Quick question do you still need the oculus software to play steam vr games as i have installed the virtual desktop software but when loading games i get a notification stating steam vr not loading oculus app its looking for
Great video, thanks. I have an odd problem though that maybe someone could help with? I cannot get rid of the "Press menu button On your left controller to show/hide the menu" dialog in the right lower corner. I've tried everything I can think of. It is on top of all other items on the desktop too so it is impossible to see things it is covering. Any suggestions? I've tried click on & around it but no luck yet....
Direct from VD helpline (though I haven't tried it myself). "Can I connect to my computer over the Internet? Yes, make sure "Allow remote connections" is checked in the Streamer window. You'll also need to enable UPnP on your router and the Streamer App will forward the required ports automatically. If you want to manually configure your router, forward TCP ports 38810, 38820, 38830 and 38840. All traffic uses end-to-end encryption"
Is there any reason to buy Virtual Desktop if you have a link cable? from what I have seen it seems like you only need this if you dont have a link cable
Virtual Desktop is for wireless VR gaming, I don't like using a link cable unless I'm using my sim-rig. For more energetic games like Half Life Alyx, Contractors Showdown or Pavlov, I prefer wireless freedom 😀
I don’t have VD at the moment but I’m looking to get the puppis s1 Wi-Fi thingy and VD and I was hoping you’d be able to tell me what’s the best codec if I want a sharp clear display and latency of about 35ms-45ms. I’d like to stay as close to 40ms and as far away from 50ms because I play allot of fast pace. So basically what codec will give me the best image quality and the lowest latency?
Which headset have you got? Q3 can run AV1 10 Bit codec with automatic bitrate on at about 35ms (depending on what you're playing). Q2 I'd probably go for H264+ like you said but make sure auto bitrate is ticked on the PC streamer app 😀
Question, I have a Quest 3, V6 router, PC is with an UTP connected to the router. Quest 3 gives Wifi 6 in the Router. Still I see 5G and 1200Mbit in the virtual desktop. Do I miss something here?
Are the powerline adapters merely range extenders for your main router? Wouldn’t a second router connected via wifi instead of Ethernet be a faster connection?
@ I was just curious if this might be a better option for me as I’m running a second router and VD is a stuttering mess. My current setup is: Main router (wifi 6) -> second wifi 6 router (connected via wifi) -> PC via Ethernet -> wireless to Quest 3
You problem is your 2nd router being connected by WiFi. The developer fully recommends ethernet to 2nd router, ethernet to PC, headset connected to 2nd router via WiFi. Powerline adaptors use your houses electric cables to transmit your internet to anywhere there is a standard plug. Then they use ethernet to get to the 2nd router OR some of the more expensive ones actually have built in WiFi (which worked for me till I laid the cable).
Very helpful, many thanks. Just wondering, if I'm currently using Virtual Desktop and a dedicated wi-fi 6E router for sim racing, is there any advantage to switching to a cable, such as the INIU one?
Changed settings as per your recommendations and now walkabout golf from pcvr is unplayable and won't load. No idea what I've done.update .. chose xr runtime default and ok...wth did I do? 😂
If it all goes wrong, reset to default on the streaming tab, then turn everything to auto on the PC app. That should solve any issues, then try again 😊
I don't think virtual desktop is needed if you're just going to connect your PC to your headset. I do believe you require a special cable for that though. Virtual Desktop is intended for wireless PCVR gaming.
So will this work if my PC doesn't have WIFI but is directly connect to a ethernet cable to my WIFI box? I didn't want to spend $70 more for a WIFI built into my motherboard.
That is going to affect the quality of your wireless experience. You need over 500mbps realistically. VD depends entirely on your wifi strength, how far is away is your router 🤔
Great video, 1 issue- when I open VR Desktop with my headset on the settings screen disappears after 1 sec and I dont have time to access or change any of the settings. How to reopen the settings page in VR?
I have an RTX4090 but my FPS cant go higher than 60-70 (even in Beatsaber), while the GPU utilisation is around 70-80% (CPU is less than 30) In the settings God and Ultra or even Good doesnt make any difference. I have Wifi 6e, 1200Mbps. What am I doing wrong?
What codec are you using? Have you ticked the "automatically adjust bitrate" on the PC streamer app? Are there any other devices connected to your WiFi? You'll get quicker answers if you jump into my discord (link below)
Thank you 👏👏👏 I've liked and subscribed . I'll follow your advice and have a go as a 76yr old simmer pc gaming isn't life grand 1983/4 Microsoft flight sim 😳 who would have thought how lucky we are now ❤
Nice video. What thing I cannot get to work is using a mouse and keyboard attached to my PC when in VD so I could work at my desk but still see 3 huge screens. I cannot see my mouse and keyboard on my desk which I heard is possible to add tracked devices. I also cannot see my mouse's cursor on the screen when in VD. Any tips? Thanks
I download application for the streamer desktop app I open it to run and as soon as I hit the download button it closes and nothing happens I get no notifications no nothing
Any idea why my game looks so blurry when using VD? I'm on a 6800xt. It has has very poor overall clarity and quality, even worse than the same game on standalone. I've tried setting my resolution in VD to ultra, increasing my ingame resolution, and tried different codecs with no noticeable benefit. My PC and my Quest are the only devices connected to my router with a consistent maximum bit rate, but i do get occasional stutters and fluctuating latency. My flatscreen monitor is also capped at 2560x1440. Also tried video buffering with no difference, and I've asked around on the VD discord with no help at all.
I'm a bit stumped tbh, you've done everything I would suggest. Your setup should be able to handle everything, so a few questions: Is your Quest connected to you 5ghz wifi channel? What is your bitrate? Please set everything to default on the streaming tab, then start at potato 🥔 & see how you go. Jump into my discord for quicker response (link in description)
Hi, firstly thank you very much for all the information on how to play WRC better with VR. They are very very helpful!! I have a problem when I play wrc on my Quest 3 Virtual Desktop. While I have a great picture after doing the settings you suggested and I have a great picture when i'm inside the car, if I move my head even a little while wearing the VR of course, or there is a closed turn , the image shakes, makes "breaks", as a result of which it is very tiring for me!! And all this with an incredible image and 90 fps!!!! Am I doing something wrong?? Thanks in advance🙂
I'm very sorry to tell you this bit, EA WRC doesn't work well with Virtual Desktop. I have done an EA WRC video using the link cable, even then, it is still troublesome. Dirt Rally 2.0 works flawlessly however 🤩
If h264+ can go up to 400bits and you have a dedicated wifi6e router surely this would be a better options than AV1 10bit? you said av1 has all the shiny bits but never actually mentioned what these are?
That's a good point, H264 is an older codec, and running it at 400mbps introduces extra latency without any real benefit (for me). I run an RTX 4080, so AV1 10 Bit is the better option for me as it is the most modern & efficient codec. Great question btw, what system do.you run?
@@MacInVR Thank you for your response! :) I run a 4080 with a 7000x3d, and i shall be using the dedicated router so bit rate should be a non issue. Love your detailed videos! Finally getting back into VR with my Quest 3 and Virtual Desktop has been awesome so far. Never messed with the settings to much but I will now. THANKS! One question.. does Airlink interfere with Virtual Desktop? Should I disable it? .. okay that's 2 lol

I understand getting a second router is helpful. Personally i don't have one and don't feel like i need to. Note my main router is in the same room as my playspace. I get 1200 Mbps no problem on my Q2. I did sperate my wifi bands and only have my Quest and Phone using the 5Ghz band. Usually i turn my phone wifi off when playing just in case but i often don't and never had an issue in quality/latency. Now am i not understanding somthing? Am i ignoring the potential benefits? Or am i just lucky to have a good setup? Please tell me, im interested!
@@MacInVR Thanks ! I learned from the best🤘 I mostly used your guide years ago, i barely touched it since and itd still rock solid. I do have a question tho. So im using HEVC 10BIT, i see im limited to 150Mbps, but fir you it goes up to 200Mbps. Is this a Q2 bottleneck?
Is it okay if I don't use Ethernet for virtual desktop? Or is it a absolute must have? My wifi is good as it is but if I need a ethernet I will get it for it, just curious.
I want to like Virtual Desktop more than I actually do. I feel like apps like this will be of more use when we have 4k AR passthrough cameras on future VR sets. The offices are neat but for me its to static to hang out for a period of time.
@MacInVR haha ok. I have a laptop using Virtual Desktop with a i7 4070 in it. It's been a headache trying to tweak games to run smoothly and look sharp. I'll try your suggestions to hopefully fix the issues going on. Framerate is all over the place and I found turning ON the SSW actually helped.
i have a tplink archer AXE75 and my quest 3 cant see the 6ghz band i tried everything im on v66 my quest pro can see the 6ghz band and works perfect im not sure whats going on , does anyone have the same router and can see 6ghz normally on their quest 3?
Hello Mac, thank you for the time and energy that you dedicate to these. I’m somewhat new to the expanding world of VR. I have a simple question if I may ask please. Do I need a PC or laptop to play PCVR games or if I download these 2 apps can I do it?
Nice video, does this work for Asetto Corsa ? I'm not having much luck getting that into VR on my Q3 unless I use the MetaQuest link app instead of VD, I have been using VD for some months now in Microsoft Flight Sim and it works really well so I know my setup seems ok but not with AC??
Finally got around to buying Virtual Desktop to give it a try. Just upgraded from a 3060ti to a 4070 Super. Using Half Life Alyx as my test bench. It always ran great on the 3060ti. Can't say I'm seeing a huge improvement with the 4070 Super with Virtual Desktop. Tried different codecs, bit rates, frame rates etc. Get around 60-70fps in HL Alyx with setting at mostly high/ultra. I got a bit bored going back and forth between game and Virtual Desktop to change settings. And when the game starts it's centered about 90 degrees to the left of me for some reason! Can I be bothered with Virtual Desktop? I'm not seeing much improvement over Quest or Steam Link in my early tests to be honest.
Okay, set everything to default in the Streamer tab in the heqdset menu. Make sure the streamer app on the PC is set up, as I suggest in the video. Probably best to jump on my discord to get quicker answers (it's late in the UK).
Meta have changed the rules and you now need to follow each other. Jump on my discord (link below), we have a dedicated bucket for referrals and following.
Surprisingly enough, I get smoother gameplay with VD WITHOUT my 1660ti 16gb/6gb vram laptop connected to an ethernet cable compared to using Meta quest link's official cable! I bet it'd be EVEN smoother with VD and laptop connected via ethernet. But would love to see a tutorial vid on remote connecting to your pc via VD!
Hi there. I'm trying to link up my daughter's old Windows 10 laptop to her Quest 3 for full body (avatar) tracking in her Quest 3 goggles. I guess that will work OK if as you say, Virtual Desktop is only interested in the internet speed in the flat she lives in. I am guessing she needs an ethernet cable to the laptop or adapter, as you say "No ifs, no buts" for it all to run optimally. My daughter lives in Bulgaria and I live in the UK, so difficult to get the knowledge into her 13 year old head. Does all this sound doable, before I go paying out for the Virtual Desktop app on her headset or phone. Are the recommended settings you mention necessary or do you think the general settings on install will be fine. Would be great to hear from you, to confirm what's necessary. Thanks for a reply if you get a mo. Cheers!
Meta has a great refund policy, so buy the app and try it out. If it doesn’t work, as long as you haven't used the app for over 2 hours, you can request a full refund
I love the virtual desktop and how it seems infinitely clearer compared to the Oculus link, but what stops me from using it as a definitive solution is that there is no option to reduce the FOV tangent, as there is in the link. With the link I can set it to 0.85 without compromising the visible fov and have a huge performance gain, which allows me to maximize the resolution slide. With the VD, ultra or Godlike are already too heavy for my 6800xt.
Is there any benefit to use Virtual Desktop (Steam version) with a wired headset on the PC, such as the Quest 3 using Link Cable or PSVR2? The Virtual Desktop Discord says both are compatible with the Steam version despite not being listed in the description, but wondering what it adds/makes available that’s not possible using SteamVR?
Hey man, i just found your video as im trying to increase performance, my setup is quiete the same as yours , im running a i9 12900K, 32Gb DDR5 RAM and a ASUS ROG STRIX 4090. im using the same router as you as a dedicated VR router. it is placed right next to me , so im never further then maximum 2,5m away from it, im ONLY using wifi 6e and set it to the recommended settings for the router to 160hz band. i got nearly the same VD settings you have shown and yet im having some trouble with the image, its nice and crisp yes BUT i can see dropping frames over and over again. when watching the performance diagramm it seems to be related to network spiking... My conntection is shown with stable 2401mbps... i tested with potato settings and low hz settings in VD aswell, no matter what i try , it seems like i cant maintain the stable FPS counter even with all this fancy hardware, its starting to drive me crazy... any idea whats up??? I have done some nvidia tweaks aswell, like prefered performance to maximum and all that stuff, didnt found a fix... the 4090 should be able to maintain 90 frames in VR right ?! Oh and Firmwares and patches are all up to date.
I'm using Virtual Desktop since my Oculus Go and I never would have bought a Pico4 if it didn't have Virtual Desktop. All of my headsets have it. One thing I noticed: you should have the 2.4 ghz channel and the 5 ghz channel of your router separated, so your headset doesn't have the option to choose automatically the strongest signal. With my Quest3 there is not much of a problem, but I noticed that my Pico4 liked to pick the 2.4 channel. Now seperated on the router I can dedicate the 5 ghz channel to my Pico4 and have 1200 mbps instead of somewhere lower than 400 mbps. Especially playing Beatsaber with the Pico4 has a lot of latency with the 2.4 channel.
If your wifi strength is really good, is there still a requirement for the ethernet? Will this setup just simply not work at all without the cabled option?
Hi. I've have Virgin Hub5 router which is WiFi6. My Virtual Desktop shows that I'm getting 5Ghz network at 1200 Mbps. Would connecting a 6e router (such as the one you show) to this give me 2400 Mbps? Thanks.
Yes I have a WiFi 5 Virgin hub connected to the router he showed (AXE75) which is then plugged into my pc. I connect the quest to the WiFi 6e router 6ghz band and I can play at 2400mbps. I get 500mbit on Virtual Desktop.
It works if your quest is directly plugged into an ethernet connection, out of a shared switch with your pc. This is a great workaround if you have 5ghz for example.
I'm confused here and at the risk of sounding stupid. I'm not using a laptop or PC. Is there an application or reason for me to download the virtual desk top? What am I going to get out of it?
Hello, sir. My headset arrived earlier today, so I was amazed to find such useful content right away! I found out the capacity of the battery was not even close enough for my needs, so I also ordered a Bobovr S3 pro Super Strap. Now, one question, if I may. With the Virtual Desktop and s 5 GHz router, do I need that Oculus Link cable people are talking about? Thank you!
@@MacInVR thank you for the response! I have a router working in 5 GHz/2.4 GHz channels one meter away from my PC. I tried to play SUPERHOT using an AirLink/SteamLink (5 GHz) wireless connection and the quality was very poor, I experienced delays and WIFI connection loss a couple of times. My RX5700 XT, according to the specifications, should allow running the games on medium settings comfortably. If you could give me a clue as to what might be the issue, I would be much obliged.
@@fourtwain I use Virtual Desktop now instead of USB cable with a 5Ghz secondary router next to my PC. Only play sim racing games and it's much better than cable. Bear in mind my PC has an RTX4090, 64GB DDR5 RAM and top end Intel CPU so I can ramp up the settings and use the AV1 codec.
Great video mate; really to the point. BTW how far would a 3070TI from the setup you describe? I know the new 40XX have the new bells and whistles systems for frame generation; does that affect VR too or a 30XX card is just fine too ? Also does this work also if you want to play wired seated games or only wireless? Thanks!
30 series works well. 3070TI would be completely fine. I have a 3060ti which isnt exactly "amazing" for vr with only 8GB VRAM but it runs fine in all my vr games. Smooth 90hz on High preset at 500mbit. Virtual Desktop doesnt connect by wire only wireless, you would need a link cable and meta link software for wired.
I can't even buy virtual desktop on Quest. I got a Vr headset last week, there seems to be a mark on a lens that won't go away no matter what micro fiber cloth I use. The graphics and in game stuff is all blurry and glitchy. Sometimes just stutters everywhere. To the point of making me sick. Meta won't accept any of my debit cards. And yeah, every game just seems bad (My rig can supposedly handle several vr headsets running max graphics. I just apparently can't set it all up, no matter what I try)
Great stuff. This is my set up, I have the 4080 Super and Quest 3 and so I am able to use the AV1 codec. I also have a PrismXR air link bridge to connect my Quest 3 to my PC and it works great. Wireless VR is the way to go hands down.
@@BeamedAgain AV1 is rock solid, no issues. It's recommended by the developer of VD, Guy Godin. Although the comparison is by no means scientific, AV1 seems more stable, with almost no connection drops where the picture gets fuzzy. I seemed to have more of that kind of thing with H264+, although overalll its a solid codec.
I’ve used VD for +4yrs starting with a Q1 and it works great. Your setup tips are very good. However, with the right settings I get pretty well the same clarity with smoother performance using Air Link at 200mbps Dynamic bitrate (hevc). Each to their own and whichever one works best for you it mainly comes down to personal preference imho. Also, I get the best results with flight sims like msfs2020 with both my Q3 and QPro/rtx4090 using an official link cable connected to my z790mb usb 3.2 type c port with 650mbps encoding bitrate (h264). Bit better distant clarity and 7-10ms lower latency. My z790 mb provides enough power to maintain my headset battery at +80% for +6hrs.
I suppose it's whatever suits you, I've used airline and it works well. I just prefer the ease of use and versatility of VD (don't get me started on the default settings in Oculus & debug tool!). Thanks for commenting, nice to get an alternate view 😀
@@MacInVR Ya, VD is definitely easier to setup and get good results, especially for those that don’t want to learn to use meta-link, ODT, and OTT. I’m still happy to have VD as a backup, just in case Meta temporarily screws up an update, lol!
I use an Iniu link cable that has a built in USB port for your Meta headset charger. That keeps everything at 100% for as long as you want, highly recommended and only £18 😉 amzn.to/45IbL4R
@@MacInVR Ya, I’ve used that and it works great. I still prefer my +4yo official link cable because it’s thinner, lighter, and more flexible. Other devices that support AV1 include: Samsung Exynos 2100 and 2200 mobile chips, Various MediaTek Dimensity SoC's, Google's Tensor processor, Firefox browser, and Edge browser on Windows 10 and later.

@@MacInVR I'll give it a try, that fast reply earned a sub. Thanks for the help 👍🏻
Honestly Mac you’re the only one I’ve seen who explains the codecs and what effect they have on latency. Thank you!
They are a life saver if you can't get ethernet to your PC 😊
Thanks! After several tries your video helped me to get it looking great.
Thank you so much!!! I have only ever found what I needed from your videos!! Thank you so much!!

I was thinking it would be h264+ but I just wanted an experts opinion 😁
Which headset have you got? Q3 can run AV1 10 Bit codec with automatic bitrate on at about 35ms (depending on what you're playing). Q2 I'd probably go for H264+ like you said but make sure auto bitrate is ticked on the PC streamer app 😀

how do i capture virtual desktop in obs for streaming purposes? like i wanna stream vr games on twitch/youtube using virtual desktop

Are the powerline adapters merely range extenders for your main router?
Wouldn’t a second router connected via wifi instead of Ethernet be a faster connection?
My garden office is 20m away from my house so that was the only option I had at that time. I have since run a full ethernet cable to the mac-cave 😉
@ I was just curious if this might be a better option for me as I’m running a second router and VD is a stuttering mess.
My current setup is:
Main router (wifi 6) -> second wifi 6 router (connected via wifi) -> PC via Ethernet -> wireless to Quest 3
@@MacInVRI have the same powerline adaptors you showed in your video. I’ve had them for 4 years and they’ve been great.

Very helpful, many thanks. Just wondering, if I'm currently using Virtual Desktop and a dedicated wi-fi 6E router for sim racing, is there any advantage to switching to a cable, such as the INIU one?
In your case, with a wifi 6e router, the advantages would be minimal and probably not noticeable (that's my setup also)
Changed settings as per your recommendations and now walkabout golf from pcvr is unplayable and won't load. No idea what I've done.update .. chose xr runtime default and ok...wth did I do? 😂
If it all goes wrong, reset to default on the streaming tab, then turn everything to auto on the PC app. That should solve any issues, then try again 😊
@MacInVR Thankyou 👍
And does Virtual Desktop support direct connection to PC via USB-C cable? This would be much more reliable than any Wi-Fi connection
I don't think virtual desktop is needed if you're just going to connect your PC to your headset. I do believe you require a special cable for that though. Virtual Desktop is intended for wireless PCVR gaming.

Hi there. I'm trying to link up my daughter's old Windows 10 laptop to her Quest 3 for full body (avatar) tracking in her Quest 3 goggles. Make sure your PC and Quest are on the same network (PC connected via ethernet & Quest connected to wifi)
That is a good point. You can contact Guy Godin (the dev) directly on X (Twitter) & he usually responds to great ideas 🤩
Yh when i got my router I had to seperate 2.4 and 5ghz from 6ghz, before i was getting 1000mbps and when i split the speeds I was on 6ghz at 2400mbps
@@BeamedAgain I have a new router with Wifi 6+ and have similar speeds in VD with my Quest3. But I'm happy with the 1200 mbps on my Pico 4 as well.
How do we go about separating the signals and assigning them to specific connections? Thank you in advance
@@Subfightr That's in the setup of your router, the WiFi configuration. In those settings you can give each channel a different password.
If your wifi strength is really good, is there still a requirement for the ethernet? Will this setup just simply not work at all without the cabled option?
I can see my desktop, but no games launch in vr 😂 I tried to use VR Desktops game tab and none of my steam vr games appear there 😢
9:02 I wish you could have explaned a bit more about the codec and what the difference are and what their roles are.
VD is fantastic but should offer more presets between ultra (2800px) and godlike (3200px)
@1:00 What game is this please?
It's Automobilista 2 running on PC
@@BeamedAgain Excellent. Thanks for that. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Really? Wow I only have the option for up to 200 Mbps on my wifi 6 router. Interesting
I think your looking at the settings tab, you should be in the Streamer tab
It works if your quest is directly plugged into an ethernet connection, out of a shared switch with your pc. This is a great workaround if you have 5ghz for example.
I'm confused here and at the risk of sounding stupid. I'm not using a laptop or PC. Is there an application or reason for me to download the virtual desk top? What am I going to get out of it?
Thanks for the discount
Thank you!
You do not need it, you can play all your PC VR wireless now. Thanks for your nice comments 👍
@@MacInVR should I buy the Virtual Desktop and start using it instead?
For me the VD make the quest blurry, terrible flickering and performance.
Went back to steam vr and was near perfect.
With a 4080 super.
What games were you playing?
I can't even buy virtual desktop on Quest. I got a Vr headset last week, there seems to be a mark on a lens that won't go away no matter what micro fiber cloth I use. The graphics and in game stuff is all blurry and glitchy. Sometimes just stutters everywhere. To the point of making me sick. Meta won't accept any of my debit cards. And yeah, every game just seems bad (My rig can supposedly handle several vr headsets running max graphics. I just apparently can't set it all up, no matter what I try)
Sounds like your headset is faulty. Open a ticket with Meta (I'm guessing it's a Quest?).
As for your cards, can't help, sorry 😐
need help it wont install on my pc
It'll be your anti-virus probably, turn it off, install VD then turn it back on. Then check for interfering apps
@@MacInVR tryed turning off anti-virus did not work. and how do i check whats intering with it
Great stuff. This is my set up, I have the 4080 Super and Quest 3 and so I am able to use the AV1 codec. I also have a PrismXR air link bridge to connect my Quest 3 to my PC and it works great. Wireless VR is the way to go hands down.
How is AV1 compared to H264+? I have a 3060 ti so I can't run AV1 :( But h264+ still looks really good at 500mbit
@tomc1380 it's never been known 😳😂
I use an Iniu link cable that has a built in USB port for your Meta headset charger. That keeps everything at 100% for as long as you want, highly recommended and only £18 😉
amzn.to/45IbL4R
@@MacInVR Ya, I’ve used that and it works great. I still prefer my +4yo official link cable because it’s thinner, lighter, and more flexible. Fortunately my z790 usb3.2 gen2 type c port supply’s enough power, unlike many others. Actual performance is the same with both though. So, very good option for many others.
Thank you for your response! :)
I run a 4080 with a 7000x3d, and i shall be using the dedicated router so bit rate should be a non issue.
I was set on AV1 10bit based but then i stumbled on the reddit post name bellow, where h264+ looked clearer than AV1 at 400bit rate, so that confused me again on what to choose, i have seen other UA-cam videos saying use AV1 like you and others saying to use H264+, so i was just trying to get clarification on why exactly you used that codec.
Reddit post: Virtual Desktop AV1 vs H264+ vs Airlink (Quest 3)
Great video
I have the same wifi 6 router as you but I have a 4070 GPU so I am hoping it looks pretty good
I installed Virtual Desktop and it hacked my quest3's.. now they play music that I can't turn off and I can't do anything else! I was thinking of formatting my computer to solve this but then I realized this is installed on my brand new (2 day old) goggles. Are they bricked? Can I warrantee VR goggles due to breakage due to downloading virtual desktop? 😡😡😡😡😡
amazing tutorial !
Thanks 😉
How do i change the ip
u did not start from how to use it first time I mean I have never open the box of vr set yet.
That is your problem. This is aimed at experienced VR people, sorry 😞
It does work on just WiFi. I’ve had no issue
Many GPUs support AV1 10-bit codec, including:
GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs: These GPUs support real-time AV1 hardware encoding, including the GeForce RTX 4070.
Radeon RX 7000 (RDNA3) GPUs: These GPUs support AV1 encoding.
Arc Alchemist (Xe-HPG) GPUs: These GPUs support AV1 encoding.
Intel Xe and Arc GPUs: These GPUs support AV1 decoding.
GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs: These GPUs have a dedicated AV1 hardware decoder that can handle up to 8K HDR streams.
Intel Arc A-Series Graphics: These GPUs support AV1 decoding, including the A580, A770, A380, A750, A350M, A370M, and A530M.
AV1 is a video standard that supports 10-bit encoding, which allows for HDR videos. It's up to 50% more efficient than H.264, so it requires less internet bandwidth to transmit the same quality.
Other devices that support AV1 include: Samsung Exynos 2100 and 2200 mobile chips, Various MediaTek Dimensity SoC's, Google's Tensor processor, Firefox browser, and Edge browser on Windows 10 and later.
AV1 10 Bit codec is only supported by Quest 3, Quest 3S and the Pico 4 Ultra (that was my point)
