Holly Johnson, the lead singer, played bass and sang in bands from the age of about 18 onwards - had a decent solo career as well and now is still thriving, writing and painting and occasionally singing
Norman Watt Roy, bassist, was asked to play a session for Frankie because it would be cheaper than bringing the band to London from Liverpool, not for this song but for relax, he was just jamming between takes, it was recorded and used
Hmmmm I think this is a rare case where you two should have listened to a studio recording without a video, which is how most of us originally heard it, and we were forced to listen to the lyrics so we could try to interpret their meaning - you were so busy laughing and joking around that you didn't seem to take the words seriously. There is a very famous poem called Kubla Khan written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who also wrote The Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner (in which the killing of an albatross leads to doom), and Kubla Khan did indeed decree that a pleasure dome would be built, so this song blends historical facts with modern fantasy. I remember studying The Ancient Mariner at school, and our teacher directed us towards other works, which meant many people here in Britain had heard of Kubla Khan before this record was released, and maybe that helped us listen more closely when it was on our radios several times a day.
I always find it funny in retrospect that the clips often portray Holly as a sort of innocent character and the other 4 as more problematic people and yet in real life it was somewhat the opposite. For whatever reason Holly chafed at having to share the limelight and killed the golden goose by wanting to go solo whilst also not wanting them to continue as a band under the same name. He had an okay solo career but I think he underestimated the boys songwriting abilities - they largely wrote the hits like Relax and understood how to write for his voice in a way other later people perhaps did not. In the end his personality just didn't suit being part of a band I guess - it's not for everyone. For a long time after his behaviour towards the others wasn't particularly great but they did play together back in 2023 so perhaps maturity on eveyone's part has seen some of the issues of the past laid to rest.
Forgot to say there is a much better version Franky goes to hollywood 2004 live it lasts 19 minutes and has the most thumping bass I have ever heard it s 3 iconic songs from Franky
Not sure why they made this video using this particular mix. The album version is superior. The first half of the album is a masterpiece. Not sure what happened with the second half. 🤔
Yeah, as other comments have said, the longer album version is superior to this. Producer Trevor Horn was/is singer and bassist in 'The Buggles' (Video Killed The Radio Star). ✌️🤟🤘
That sound was so exciting new! It raided our world! Frankies goes to Hollywood was something special back in the 80's! i still love them!
The album version is the best mix of this song. Hard to believe this is 1984.
In 84 we did find it hard to believe
Trevor Horn is probably the greatest producer of all time in my opinion, and he produced this song and album.
Video killed the radio star
Near 14 minute version is insane .

This is based on the poem "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Holly's voice has always been amazing
Sharp, expressive and distinct. There are few voices that are like his.
If you want naughty you need to check out Relax by Frankie goes to hollywood x
Some of the best music (aside from the Beatles) to come out of Liverpool.
Trevor Horn's genius production.
I love this song and the video and I want to go back to 1985

"They've got a lot of people tied up..." Missing the point a little... ;)
Lucky we didn’t know in 1984 what this song was about! In fact I’m amazed MTV ever played this video! Lol.
Did you really not? Were you six years old in 1984? Man, we *all* knew what Frankie was about.

Possibly the best band in the 80s ,4 classic songs 1984-85 .
I’m just here for the bass
There's a live version of this from 2004 with a different lead singer that's so powerful it defies belief.
I agree its just as good.
@@eggy1962yep, Ryan Molloy did a great job on that.
The live version from the Trevor Horn concert (without Holly Johnson sadly) is an awesome live performance well worth a viewing.
