I had a horrible job interview. I was interviewing for a forensic examiner position. Mind you it called for a high school diploma. I have a college degree in forensics, 1 internship at a ballistics crime lab at the state and a internship with an advocacy center. Went in for the interview and was mocked and was told “ did you just wake up and decided you want to do forensics? Which is called CSI effect. Where people watch entertainment and decide they want to do it. I worked hard for my credentials and was over qualified. They also made a comment “about my daddy”. My dad is a successful business man in my small town so yes that was used against me. I didn’t get the job and luckily I’m glad I didn’t. Do not want to work with people like that.

K S0731 so rude and unprofessional!!!! Yea you just worked your but off studying and achieved your degree plus student debt because you woke up and thought it would be fun to do!!! And actually because your dad is successful to me shows he was showing you the motivation that showed you that if you apply yourself and work hard you get ahead in life with something you are passionate about! My uncle was a coroner and it takes special kind of person to do this work, she did you a huge favor by not giving you the job!

Sounds like someone was jealous and threatened! I cannot even imagine the rage and seething anger I would feel after that. I would have found a way to file some type of complaint because I'm that person. Someone like that does not deserve to be there.. I'm angry for you. I wish you the best and I like to believe that stuff like that happens because that's not where you are supposed to be

Wildly unprofessional. That person had some powerful neuroses that she totally put on display in your interview! She was probably insecure about her own capabilities and threatened by a more educated person coming the place where she has been the "expert," as you might challenge her knowledge or discredit. her standing. As the daughter of a successful man in a small town, I had a lot of crap and preconceptions to deal with - it really tells you all about the person who puts that shit on you. This person tried to make you feel invalid so she could feel better; she'll never change and ain't a damn thing you can do about her tiny miserable brain. Your career sounds like it will be amazing!!! Go forth and examine! I moved to NYC and escaped that fishbowl 25 yrs ago. 🧘

Aren't you glad you discovered how bad this rude person was before you got hired and had to work for the rude person? Imagine how terrible your workdays would have been if this person had been your boss! When I look for new talent, I don't use the normal, stupid, lazy generic interview. My stylists are recruited like college sports stars. Look for the best and then offer them a package that will make them want to move to our team. I can't remember the last time I hired somebody from the standard process--maybe 15 -20 years ago.

As someone who interviews people as part of my job, she did ALL the wrong things. The only thing I do is we don’t always make eye contact but I assure the person that we will not be making eye contact because we write down their answers. We do this for two reasons. One is for hr purposes because we need to justify our reasoning to hire and decline people to ensure we are being fair and equal to all candidates. Two is because we may interview several people back to back and we want to go back and remember what they answered. I try to make my interviewees as comfortable as possible because I get so nervous when I am the interviewee. Honestly though my advice, if someone interviews like that lady DECLINE the job if offered. That person would be miserable to work with. Also one more thing. I sometimes talk about myself in one sentence to say how I started but that is to show that we care about growing from within. Especially because I interview for the entry level position I don’t want them to feel like they’ll be stuck in entry level because I’ve worked for other companies that do not promote from within. I do not however go on and on about myself. That’s just rude lol

Any advice for someone who wants to go job hunting again? I'm 37, so I don't have youth going for me anymore. I hate job hunting which is why I've been stuck in retail 11 years, and I get discouraged. So I can use any advice you've got so I feel better prepared. I'm just curious what an interviewer is looking for in both resume and interview. And are cover letters that important? I hate them, but should I just suck it up and do them?

    • @mariebernier3076
      @mariebernier3076 4 роки тому

If your company doesn't insist on you to refrain from eye contact, I would seriously reconsider this approach. Eye contact with a job applicant allows you to gather critical information about the prospect's personality. In addition to visual info, people tend to give more genuine answers when they are speaking on a more connected level, it's a much more efficient way to accurately assess them. The step of speaking to a person looking down recording answers could as effectively be done with a questionnaire. You could also put a clause in the application that grants you the right to record the conversation for transcription purposes and the tape could then be typed up and subsequently destroyed.

On the other hand, I had the most amazing interview with a woman for a retail position - we talked for over an hour with only the first 15-20 min being scripted questions. She loved me, I loved her- everything was perfect. She must be the best actress in the world and only pretended to like me because I NEVER heard back - even after I did a follow-up. For another job, I got hired on the spot after 20 minutes and the interview was just ok, nothing special For another office job, I got hired with no interview - just a casual convo on the day I started and I loved that job. It’s so frustrating because we spend so much time stressing out and perfecting our answers and sometimes it’s for nothing but with both positive and negative outcomes being possible. Great video!!

It's true! I'm sure that in at least 50% of interviews (depending on the position, of course) your actual responses don't even matter. They just judge whether they like you or not by your appearance and the way you come off, how you speak, etc. Those first impressions are everything, and unfortunately, not everyone is going to like you, no matter how qualified you may be. That's what I've learned anyway...

I once had an interview when I was a teenager at a kid's play place where they would host birthday parties. After the interview I was told I'd have to work a party before being officially hired. I said that wouldn't be a problem and cancelled all my plans for the weekend. When I got to the party the other associate told me another girl was supposed to work it but, she had been sick for 2 weeks so, it would just be 2 of us and 25 kids. I worked the party and enjoyed it, the other girl said she was impressed with how I worked and that she could tell I was great with kids. A week later I still hadn't heard anything about if I had the job or when I should start so, I walked up to the location. When I met with the owner she said they had decided to go in another direction. I was crushed. I found out later they never had the intention of hiring me or amybody else for that matter. They just needed someone to fill in for the sick girl. Worst part was that I never even got paid for the day I worked.

Ambers Alerts I was actually at a job interview at Enterprise, and the regional manager told me that his wife works at Michael Kors. He said it was super catty there, and at meetings they try to undermine and ambush each other to seem dominant. I wound up not wanting to work at Enterprise and he could tell and he denied me before I could deny him lol, but that little part of the interview really stuck out to me. I think a lot of female dominated companies are like that to be honest. I worked at a unisex salon and it was catty there as well. Anyways, seems like you dodged a bullet.

I experienced this same type of interview recently and FELT THE EXACT SAME WAY. I walked out of that interview asking myself, "did that just happen?" I felt attacked? and ignored? during an interview? it was so unreal. It did give me a sense of disappointment in myself and in the people who interviewed me since these are people I looked up to in a professional manner. I as well thought it was going to lead me to where I want to be career wise but I am now reminded that another door that is meant for ME, will open. It is also a sort of relief to know someone as talented and well spoken as you went through a similar nightmare as I did lol, All thanks to your storytime! It is so hard when you're starting out. I had so many horrible job interviews back in the day. I remember one that was advertising a marketing job with top notch clients and big names. Showed up to the interview in a beautiful suit and ready to go. The waiting room was filled with other people waiting to be interviewed. I get called in and the guys office is totally empty except for some staged basic furniture. No paperwork or anything to give it a look that any actual work occurs there and no other people besides him and a receptionist. He wouldn't let me ask any questions about the job and got offended when I was jotting down some notes as he spoke so I could remember questions for later. He wouldn't answer anything and said I would have time to ask questions on the first day! Told me I looked great, wear the same suit tomorrow and some comfortable shoes not the stilettos I had on. The whole thing seemed completely shady so called the next day and said I wasn't coming. He didn't even remember who I was one day later! Turns out I had a friend who later applied unknowingly and actually went on the first day. They ended driving her like 3 hours away in a beat up Dodge with two dudes to sell computer paper by going door to door in random office buildings. LMAO! Completely dodged a bullet with that one! I tell people if you get a bad feeling from the interview trust your instinct and forget it. Those jobs that I have had a bad feeling but took it anyways always turned out to be my most miserable jobs.

I was being interview for a cellphone store. I always dress up for interviews & when I left the house that morning it was chilly. November in the south is weird- it might be 35 degrees in the morning and 75 by lunch. So I show up to meet the owner in a blouse with a leather jacket over it and I hadn’t intended on removing my jacket & this wasn’t a shirt that would’ve been appropriate for an interview without the jacket. Where it went wrong was he interviewed me on the sidewalk outside the store 😳 in the direct sun. So it was really hot. The kicker was he asked to SEE MY ARMS because “you know you’re wearing a jacket in this heat” and I couldn’t help but shoot back “well I’ve NEVER been interviewed on a sidewalk before.” It took me a second to even understand what he was asking for. Oddly enough I did get that job and the manager who trained me from another store is now my boyfriend of 3 years. We’ve both moved on from there but I’ll always been glad I got the job or I doubt I would’ve met my partner who lived about 45 min away. But yeah that’s the story of when my future boss asked to check my arms for track marks because I wore a jacket in November. Lol

I had a similar experience with a job interview I'm pretty sure was a prank. a local ballet company was looking for a sales person for their tickets and the guy interviewing me started grilling me about my experience as a musician in high school band (this was 6 years after i graduated high school) and started bitching at me about my answers. He used the whole thing to show off his amazing knowledge of classical music and at the end, he didn't even shake my hand. He also just like stood up and walked out of the room and that was the end of the interview. I thought there was a second part and he was gonna go get the person who was really interviewing me but that was just the way he ended the interview

I was told within the first two questions that my “qualifications might not meet the standard”, (This was for a call center) and that they would have to “get back to me”. I was never returned a phone call. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

i tried working in retail but i quit after the 4th day 😣 and once i applied for a job (retail) we had to go through exams and personal interview lol the interviewer told me the only thing she noticed about me that she did not really like is that i showed "2 much confidence" when i answered the questions but then she said she likes me and gave me a form to fill in my details cuz i got the job but a few days later they sent me an email telling me that i did not get it 😂😂 so stupid ugh 😣 anyways, love you gurl ❣ ur doing an awesome job 💜💜

This reminds me of my first "real" interview when I was 19. I had always worked in poultry houses, processing plants and cleaned houses on the side. Trust me, I wasn't afraid of getting dirty. But I was excited to apply for Cato ( and like you there was no requirements other than a high school diploma), I was nervous of course, but I dressed nice and noted to wear accessories because I remember that the employees at the store wore a bunch of bracelets and overlapping necklaces. When I first got there and no lie the first thing she said was.
" I only called you in because your resume was unusual".
But she said it in a joking manner so I just laughed and said yes and agreed.
It started off okay, basically asking me what I did in my last jobs and why I would apply to retail.
Then it just got stressful. She started asking questions none of which were the basic retail questions (strengths weaknesses, what's something you overcame in your work, nothing).. literally only people in upper management would know. I had no idea what she was talking about so I just went with. "I can't answer that but I am more than willing to learn."
I felt like a moron. When it was over she smiled and rolled her damn eyes and said "Well it was nice meeting you. You looked nice anyway."
I walked out of there completely terrified of going through interviews. I also applied to Walmart for the clothing department as well. They called me in. I had three people sit in front of me, very friendly. Asked me the basic questions and hired me soon after. I then came to realize that the lady that interviewed me at Cato KNEW I didn't know the terminology of retail (I feel even more stupid now because she specifically said at the beginning she felt my resume unusual so obviously she knew I had no previous retail experience). So she decided to make a complete ass out of me instead.
*I also want to note that I wasn't expecting for the lady at Cato to just straight up hire me. I just wasn't expected to feel so stupid about myself for not knowing things*

I once had an interview at a dog daycare place and the manager (which was a male) told me to tell me about myself. He said "So do you have a boyfriend? Where do you live? Age?" Like excuse me? You just asked if I had a boyfriend..? Creepy. Also told me I wouldn't be able to Uber there (even though it was a 5 minute drive) but he could take the train and a longboard to work. Let's just say I didn't take the job

That’s a horrible experience. Thank you for sharing it to help others. It’s horrific how disrespectful interviewers can be. In my ‘20s a woman interviewed me for a telemarketing position and was blowing bubbles at me during the whole time. Yes, bubbles from a bottle to her mouth to the air. Ask me how I would deal with it now. I’d write to the CEO and post about it.

Omg I had a similar experience at Macy’s too!! Went for the interview and apparently no one was there to interview me from the beauty department so they had a men’s department manager (???) come interview me. She didn’t ask any questions about my experience and when she got to the mandatory questions she didn’t write down any of my answers. Also she took 3 full phone calls during my interview and never said excuse me or I’m sorry. I left feeling like damn I must’ve done something wrong to have such a shitty experience but not even an hour later I get a voicemail saying I got..the..job.... safe to say I didn’t accept 😂

I'm so sorry about that. The lady who interviewed you seems very narcissistic. It was misleading how they advertised their job posting. I feel like that's the job market nowadays. Any job will be "entry level", but you need to have 20 years of experience, go to the moon, and find a cure for cancer (at least that's how I and a lot of people interpret it). The expectations are increasing and starting to become unrealistic. IDK if that makes sense.

I worked at Macy’s in accessories as a teenager in the late 90’s (yes, I’m getting old, lol.) The manager threatened to “nab security on your ass” when I truly accidentally forgot to lock or close the expensive purse cabinet all the way while helping customers. She was such an awful manager, there was a petition to have her fired. She is as an example of how some people act really pathetic when they get a tiny bit of power. They must feel badly about themselves so they need to feel better than others by treating others poorly.

  • @NicoleLarson

Omg! I worked at the Macy's makeup counters for a few years and even transferred locations! It sucked! The head of the makeup department didn't even interview me, the store manager did. I did however get the opportunity to travel to chicago to be trained for the counter I eventually ended up at. Working for MACYS was the shitty part... especially when they made me work at 4pm on Thanksgiving and I wasn't off until 11:30am (I got a 4 hour break in the middle to sleep...) AND the 3% commission is kind of bullshit in my opinion.
