MORAL OF THE STORY: stick to your policy no matter what!!! Even if they’re new, bc it will keep away nightmare clients & keep ones that respect & can adhere to rules!
So hard to do these days bc of the internet though, bc if you get a shitty client and you stick to your policy then they will post a bad review causing you to lose clients.
@@blondiescakeface1555 YES!!!! It sometimes seems that the idiom that 'the customer is always right' allows for a lot of abuse from people who feel entitled 😓😒 I always believed that telling the truth and being up front or sticking to your convictions would naturally weed out the 'undesirables' in any aspect of your life but it seems to come with some real nuclear fall out when it comes to disgruntled customers and social media or even just gossip between clients so I'm glad you pointed out that sometimes it's not always as simple or easy to disentangle yourself without some form of revenge exacted upon you for doing so 😱
Nope Thanks -- Part of it is because people teach people how to treat them. Being lenient and excessively enabling caused the client to take advantage of her. Then when she had to be strict the client had a hard time with it. I think it would have been better to tell the client her expectations up front. Then the client would have to deal with reality or not come back. That would be on the client to accept the rules or decide not to get extensions if it is too hard on her budget or transportation problems. It isn't right when people push their own agenda onto others who are shy or reserved to take advantage. But sometimes it is necessary to stand ground from the start because the professional knows things from experience that the newbie doesn't know and needs to accept.
Yeah. Here’s a thing. Some people sniff out kindness and take it for weakness and will take advantage of anyone they can. It’s just the reality of things unfortunately so we gotta learn how to be kind out in the world and know when to put our foot down.
Extensions are a luxury not a need. If you can’t afford them don’t get them. I’d love to have extensions and go to the salon every 4-6 weeks to get my hair done but that’s not realistic
that's why I can't STAND when managers or companies cater to them. INFURIATING. The customer is literally NEVER right. Not the ones who try to throw that in an employees face. Partly why I wish I owned a business. Just to be the one to put Karen's in their place since no one ever has, which is why they act that way. What people are doing when they give those people refunds, is pass that problem off along to some other person/company. Because they haven't LEARNED ANYTHING. Except that if they kick and scream, they get their way. NO!
Yesss my manager used to do that. If a customer was nice and polite and had an issue that would have mean the company rules would maybe need to be bent to accommodate, nope, not happening. As soon as a customer came in kicking screaming cussing the manager would all but kiss the customers butt. Would piss me off every.single.time.
@@Hey_Jamie god, a customer once threw a newly-brewed boiling pot of coffee at me because "it wasn't hot enough" in front of his kids (no less) and my manager.... apologized to him and gave them their meals free. Then he wondered why I quit and took other employees with me. He's lucky I didn't fucking unionize the place.
Carson Brown DEFINITELY!! Unfortunately, they’re everywhere! These people make life so much harder than it already is. ANY job dealing with the public is rough because of such people. BUT ESPECIALLY BEING A HAIRDRESSER!!! Every job I’ve ever had since I was 15 (I’m 32) has been a public service job. Daycare, cashier, retail, server, and I’ve been a hairdresser for 11 yrs. out of all the jobs I’ve had, I’ve dealt with more of these types of people than any other profession. (Serving and retail are both pretty close on the list though) I feel like everyone should have to work a public service job for at least a year... just so people would actually understand how hard it is and maybe learn how to not be a jerk. I say maybe bc I know not everyone learns... My honest opinion, I see people who act like this lack maturity, character and have a strong sense of entitlement. It’s so hard to be professional at times like these.....
Antoinette Michelle -- If she drops extensions so fast then the strip lashes is a great solution. That person is too high maintenance and is taking business away and/or hurting other client relationships
A big red flag I’ve learned about in veterinary medicine that I’m sure can be applied to most careers, is if they immediately start complaining about the previous vet, it’s probably not the vet’s fault
Jordan Lee so true!! The worst thing you can say to me the first time you sit in my chair is “No one has ever done my hair right”. I wish I could tell those client to just GTFO
Same in human medicine. Sure, there are some crappy doctors, but if they're coming in complaining they are almost sure to be leaving complaining eventually. Some people can't be pleased.
ALN 102 I’m a new stylist and I’m struggling with dealing with clients and how to respond to things like this, so I was wondering, what do you usually do/say when a new client says this to you? I haven’t had this happen yet and I genuinely have no idea what I would do in this situation, I know I wouldn’t want to go ahead and do it but I would never want to refuse a client either... such a tricky situation!!
I used to have a really good vet, then I moved to a different state, my dogs (15 years) had some medical emergencies, and when I got to the only ER vets open near me, immediately they said they would do euthanasia and dispose of the body. They said there was no way they would survive and that they would just die, WITHOUT even running any tests. (This is multiple occurrences out of desperation of nothing else being open at the time) I’m not a vet but I’m in human medicine so you can imagine how pissed off i was. They all got through it by the way and we went to an actual vet who gave a shit. In her case it was clearly the guest taking advantage and being a jerk. However to say that complaining about a (potentially very real) past issue with a (possible very inept or corrupt) medical provider couldn’t be valid doesn’t seem very sensical.
The only time I’ve ever gotten upset with a vet was when they were rough with my dog. Like yanking on her leash, acting like she was some horrible dog when she was just scared. Ever since she’s been so terrified of the vet that it’s almost impossible for her to be seen, and even then I have to give her the calming meds/sedatives or whatever it is.
You can actually fire a customer. I’m studying that in business marketing right now. There are three ways to fix the issue: get the customer to change (nearly impossible), make it so difficult that the customer fires themselves, or fire the customer outright. All are respectable because YOU have to do what makes your business profitable. If a customer is costing too much money or time, you have every right to fire that customer.
Kinlie Paulson YES! Technically you can refuse a service! Of course, there needs to be a legit reason without discrimination or just bc you don’t want to do it. In the 11 yrs I’ve been a hairdresser, I’ve only refused to do one service on a client. I was in the middle of the service too. She specifically asked me for a short chin length haircut. I asked her 3 different times if that is what she wanted and even got her to literally show me the exact length. She agreed all 3 times. In situations like these, I always cut it longer than they ask bc I can take more off if need be. I cut her hair an inch and a half longer than requested. I got the back cut and layered, started to the front side, cut a section, let the next section down and started to cut it and she started SCREAMING at me. I stepped back and apologized and try to get her to calm down. Nope! She just kept screaming and cussing me out. I kept trying to apologize and explain how she specifically told me chin length 3 times and I cut it longer than she actually asked. That made the situation worse. I stayed polite and professional the entire time. After being completely disrespected and degraded for almost 5 minutes, she finally screams “JUST CUT MY FN HAIR AND GET IT OVER WITH”. At that point, I was done. I refused and told her I would not be finishing the cut bc I did not appreciate being disrespected and screamed at. Of course she continued to scream. I immediately went to my coworker and thank God she finished it. I left the salon after that ( I was supposed to get off an hour prior to this situation). The next day the lady had called and wanted me fired. Naturally my manager , who knew me very well, refused to fire me bc of how I did handle the situation. Not to mention my coworkers, and 2 other clients who were in the salon at the time, called my manager and told her everything along with compliments on how I handled the situation. YES you can refuse a service.... BUT there needs to be a legitimate reason.
Kinlie Paulson I work at a veterinary clinic and we fire clients if they mistreat any of our employees. We’re not hurting for business, so we don’t put up with bullshit.
Deee - My husband is a self-employed hardwood flooring installer/refinisher, and we have often said the exact same thing. The first week of this month he was walking out the door to go to a job that had been scheduled two months ago, and confirmed two weeks earlier. The phone rings... I answer it and it’s the client. “Just calling to let you know we forgot you were coming, and we’re not there. We’re in XXX. (A city 6 hours away) and we won’t be back for three days. This was a whole house job in an empty house that they inherited, and are renovating to move into. Obviously two days is not enough time to do that work, so they asked to be rescheduled for as soon as possible. Told them that he would look at the schedule and call them back when they got back in town, but the soonest he thought it would be was mid January. They were really disappointed and said they understood that it was their own fault, but could he to please do what he could to get them in sooner. I took a call from another client who wasn’t sure his general contractor was going to be done with his portion of the work in time for my husband to start on schedule. I explained that it was up to him, he could work around that and be in other rooms while the General Contractor finished in the kitchen but that if he wanted to delay the floor work until January he could do that. He expressed concern that it would cause a scheduling problem for my husband. I explained that we actually had a client who was waiting for our first available opening, and he rescheduled for mid January to allow them to have his scheduled appointment and allow his General Contractor extra time. Everyone should be happy, right? Wrong!!! (Well- everyone except for my husband and I, who had lost a huge portion of our expected income for the month, with no opportunity at that late date to make it up) When I called the cancellation clients to let them know that he would be able to fit them in a full month earlier than he’d originally thought, the husband was appreciative and agreed to the date. In the background the wife was flipping out because it was too close to Christmas! (Remember- they aren’t even living in this house!) And then she wanted the mid-January slot which the other client graciously agreed to take to allow the cancellation client to be done as soon as possible. When I explained that was no longer available, that the client previously scheduled for mid December had taken that slot to allow them to be done as soon as possible she was even angrier. Husband said to schedule for December slot. The next day he left a message on the phone that after discussing it with his wife they will wait until the last week of January. 🤬🤯😡
I'm a pet groomer. My mother taught me how to groom. I'm the 80s, there was only a handful of groomers in my town. If an animal or client was particularly bad, they'd all call eachother to let them know Rover is problematic lol
She sounds like the type of client to have "the talk". "It seems like I'm not the right provider for you at this time. Our schedules are not coordinating for the times you are available. I would recommend finding a technician who is closer to you, as it will save you time and money in the future. Thank you for coming in, I wish you all the best." I would guess that "Susan" has exhausted any nearby eyelash technicians which is why she needs to travel an hour or so out of town.
Sam, you are the absolute sweetest. You’ll never say it, but this lady was an entitled nutball. You were a peach for indulging her for as long as you did.
I offer a service that I charge $300. I’ve had clients say “oh I’ll give you $40” it’s like WHAT? That is so disrespectful! Pisses me off! My price is my price! Ain’t no negotiating!
@@SjofnBM1989 Pretty much! LOL. But it's so worth it not to have a really annoying client come back to you.. or I suggest another salon that could do the service better.. let's say some of those girls at other salons are not too happy with me... tee hee.
This was a huge thing my teacher taught us in cosmetology school- you are allowed to fire a client 😂 if they’re constantly giving you hell, costing you time (like if they show up late, it screws up your client schedule the rest of the day), and costing you money, you are allowed to say to them “I am not the stylist for you” 🙌🏼
If she wanted a discount she should’ve said that BEFORE the appointment I hate when someone tries making u feel bad for a price even though it was CLEARLY stated in the beginning of the appointment I’m frustrated for you girl
@@styledbysamvay I remember my teacher had to redo a classmates hair because the "professional" who did her layers...made it look like a pair of children scissors attacked it...
I had one that complained about the price after every appointment. It would be frustrating because she loved her hair but then felt like I was charging too much.
No no no no.... do not feel.bad. all susan wanted was to complain get money back last min, so she could spend on her vacation the very next day. It had nothing to do with your service. Don't beat yourself up. She just knew what to do, and say because she done it before. You did the right thing and honestly, giving her a refund to not have her back was the best thing your establishment could have done. Don't take it to heart. You know you did what you could but this chick had other intentions. She was going to end up costing you something in the end anyways. For sure. But for now... at least you have peace :)
13:55 My husband is one of those people who keep talking to people after they drop hints that they gotta move it along. So I'm always like "BABY stop talking we gotta go." Where this lady's husband at??? Lol she needs a handler
Has this woman ever heard of getting a taxi? Like, if you have the money to get your eyelashes done every two weeks, surely you can pay for someone to drive you there, no? 🤷🏻♀️
I hate that you have to say "i'm not trying to complain" after every few sentences because you know some people will have a problem with ANYTHING. This client was clearly bothersome and rude.
Those are the people that make me mumble “wtf” throughout the day. Imagine being that delusional, selfish, and disrespectful of another persons time/money? 😩
Girl! If I told you all my horror stories you would never feel bad again. I never had a spine and I would let clients run all over me. Now I fire clients because it’s not worth stressing over disrespectful people. Just remember this when they pull the “I can’t afford that” at check out... you can’t get a full tank of gas or a basket of groceries and bargain the price. Your services are worth being paid for and not discounted. Good for you for saying something. These videos are so helpful! 💕
@@abigailtrumbo178 I always "re" ask just to make sure. Say for example, they tell me to do your roots it's 45 and then when I come back I'll ask so how much is it gonna be? That way we avoid a headache for both of us.
Ooof she definitely took advantage of you. Sorry you had to deal with someone like that. It baffles me that people treat people in the service industry like this
I had a hair client just like this she came in 30 mins till close had longgg blond hair and was just getting halffff an inch off and she made me stay 1.5 hours later after we close and the first thing she said to me was she was disabled and couldn’t drive herself to get haircuts and at the end of the cut she nit picked everything even though I cut barley anything off and made me feel like shit and at the end I gave her a free haircut and I ended up almost quitting some people are so unaware that we are people too.
Why is it that it's ALWAYS the people who can't afford/ don't want to pay full price for services that are the most nit picky?!?! They're also the ones who don't respect other people's time too.
@@styledbysamvay this similar thing happened to me the other day. this older man came in and his sister brought him. she comes in from the car and starts yelling at me and ordered my boss to finish the haircut and do more than what was asked. then only tipped me $2...
Sam Vay I assume it’s because they wanna get their “money’s worth” but I still don’t understand why some people get services provided for them when they’re just rude to the provider
People like what you're describing, legit have no intention of paying from the start! And if the do, they will make up excuses to get discounted or refunded.
As a hair stylist, I can tell you that people tell us thing you would NEVER tell a stranger. I'm not sure why but we seem to inspire people to tell us private things we don't even want to know. My colleague had a client volunteer the fact that they have syphilis without this being part of the conversation. I mean, who tells a stranger that?
I can’t stand entitled people. I worked in the restaurant industry in fine dining for years and they would treat me the same way Susan treated you. It blows my mind how people think they can do that. You seem so sweet and understanding and not a door mat ♥️ you’re worthy of kind people in your life 😘
It always blows my mind how some ppl are so damn entitled. They feel like everything and everyone should revolve around them. Never in my life have I treated or even though of treating anyone with such disrespect and disregard of their time. I am Eastern European and if anyone ever did something like Susan, she’d be dealt with. Meaning she would quickly be made aware of how damn annoying she is. I love USA, lived here for 14 years and I love how friendly ppl are, especially in places like spas, beauty salons, restaurants etc, but omg customers take advantage of the kindness and patience of others. I’m truly sorry you have to deal with idiots like Susan.
When I was a receptionist at a salon, we had one client who was notorious for being 40 mins to an hour and a half late EVERY TIME. And she would want highlights, a cut and a style. It was so bad the stylist would tell me to trick her and tell her that her appointment was an hour before it actually was. People are so inconsiderate of professional’s time and schedule. And she would only tip $5 on a $200+ worth of services
Erica Hernandez the funny thing is the salon I worked at was considered a high end salon so a lot of rich women would come to this salon. They would come in their expensive cars, walk around with their Louis Vuitton/Chanel bags and not even tip 10% of their bill
I've noticed the people with the most money are usually the ones that are the cheapest lol! That's crazy though. I would never take someone who is that late!!! And after they do it more than once, I wouldn't allow them to book again.
Sam Vay this stylist is the definition of a doormat when it came to her clients and it made me so sad cuz she is super nice 😭 but we had apprentices that could help her out when that particular client would come in
I love this channel and Sam and I agree with you what an inconsiderate human being . It is completely unprofessional however for you to be upset over her 5 dollar tip. She doesn’t have to tip. She should yes shit I tip my nail lady’s ten bucks each! But to expect a tip is highly unprofessional....
i love these stories, im not in the cosmetology business but i definitely feel like i understand my hairstylist and nail tech more now and know how to be a good client to them!
Just a bit on the eyes being closed for lash extensions: there’s a salon in Rockford, IL that INSISTS your eyes HAVE to be open to get them done so your eyes don’t get “glued shut”. Plot twist: these women aren’t certified in extensions. Freaked and walked tf out.
@@styledbysamvay Yes!!! SEVA in Walmart in Springfield IL requires you to hold a mini fan that blows on your eyes while you have to hold them open!!!! It is $20
Those are not eyelash extensions, they take individual strip lashes that you can buy at the drug store and glue them on with hair extension glue which will rip your natural lashes out and ruin them. Most nail salons do this. Lash extensions are one individual lash extension put on one individual lash with medical grade glue sensitive enough for the eyes. Be careful!! It’s important to do a good amount of research especially if its something as sensitive as your eyes!
I have been going to my nail tech every 2 weeks for the past 6-7 YEARS and have only had to last minute cancel one appointment when I was in a car accident. Otherwise I always reschedule, and always with plenty of notice so that she has time to get another client in my spot. If I cancel at the last second I am putting a dent directly into her paycheck and I would gladly pay her even though I did not get the service just because I value her so much and I would not want her to struggle in any way because of me. Right from the very first appointment with that woman she was not respectful of you, your craft, or your time! Some people are just not self-aware and are oblivious to their impact on others. You have every right to "drop" a problematic client, anyone who tells you otherwise is probably a nut just like Susan.
Honestly girl, aside from the customer and the whole story time, the way you explained eyelash extensions and how thorough and professional you are; I am sure you are an absolute angel at your job❤️ I’m the sort of person who appreciates someone to talk me through the whole process, damn ngl you sound amazing. Keep doing your thing & don’t let no negative Nancy’s get you down. First video I’ve ever seen of you, got a new sub!!☺️ about to binge watch!!x
I think it is important to find the balance between being nice for clients and flexible and stand by own rules. The Problem is when you give someone finger then next time they would like full hand.. 🤷♀️ I don’t know how some people can expect that all around them will change everything just for them. It is frustrating when you know you did absolutely everything to pleased her but it still not enough 🙈
This is why I quit photography, I just couldn’t deal with the crazy people asking for discounts and being late and wanting things for free and taking advantage of me, some people are just nuts! You seem super nice, I don’t get how anyone could be mean to you! Glad you got rid of that situation 🤣
Bye Felicia! You are so good at what you do. We talked about this today dusting my appointment 😂 just so people know, Sam has been doing my lashes for almost a year and killed it every time. I’ll so grateful for her. Sam I’m so happy for you that you got to say see ya to this client!
I used to be shy like you, I don't let people take my kindness for weakness anymore, hell know! You go girl! I wish I could have a couple conversations with you. TFS! Good luck! Julie
I am 10 minutes into your video and let me just say there are people who use appointments like this to vent because they have no one to talk to and there are also people who use these appointments to vent their problems as a manipulation tactic to get people like you to feel sorry for them so they can use it against you when it is convenient for them. Your video came up on my feed and can't wait to view the rest of this video and others. Thanks for the information about lashes shedding...I had no idea! Next time when someone comes in for a touchup but needs a full set let them know you can't because of xyz. Maybe, in the goodiebag you give clients the first time, make up a pamphlet or something with all of the rules like cancellation, when they should come in for appts and why that is best etc. Sometimes we can forget things, I know I do when especially bc sometimes it can be a lot of info. It is a shame that when you give people an inch and they take a mile. YOU did NOTHING wrong!! If she will feel awful and go around yapping her mouth negatively, tht is on HER. There are people in life who are just NEVER happy, they love to complain and can never take responsibility for their own actions.
Im a dog groomer and i was getting customers like this all the time. I kept letting things go. It got to the point where 3 people per day would either be late no show no call or not.pick up for.hours or not have money not pick up phone come early demand quick service etc. It got to the point where i sarted almost snapping on customers. I was hating my job because of the abuse. I started demanding more of people and eventually lost all the idiot clients. I kept a few that still do things but not as bad and i constantly.keep up on telling them what needs to happen or it will be full blown again. After this i finally started liking my job again and didnt feel the need to be mad all the time. From day 1 its a must to tell people how.it is period. Glad you stood up for yourself.
This lady is DEFINITELY the worst, but I do have a suggestion that might help in the future. It seems like you do a good job communicating with clients when it comes to their service and the results they can expect, but for people who don't know much about the beauty industry, they might not know how it works. So I would suggest that when you go out of your way for someone - you let them know. If you squeeze them in when you usually wouldn't - let them know! When you offer to do a fill instead of the usual full set - let them know! It seems like you really go out of your way to do things for the client, but if they don't know the expectations, then they don't know you're doing something special just for them. Something as simple as "Usually in this situation I would do [blank], but because this is the first time/I have more free time/whatever, I can offer to do [blank] just this time." That lets them know that you're doing something special for them and also sets their expectations for the future.
Eyelash extensions are high maintenance. This is true for the most accommodating, easy going, financially affluent, at home instruction abiding, healthiest- natural lashed client. Period. After working in the cosmetology industry for over a decade, it is my professional opinion that this content creator and stylist is at the top of her game. This is the type of stylist you want. Her professional rapport on this video alone speaks volumes. The industry needs more artists like this.
You were very patient! I had my own salon for 12 years and we had a lady who would come in for a colour...randomly...every few months, problem is, she was always making appointments..cancelling last minute, couple of times she just didn't show up! We didn't have a cancellation policy, we never really had the need for one, as majority of our clientele were great. Anyway this happened one to many times and I briefed the staff that she can not have another appointment without paying a deposit of £20 I had lost so much money to this lady already! She called and the stylist told her 'you will need to come in and pay a deposit' you can imagine our surprise when she did!! Anyway she still didn't bother showing up for the appointment (despite paying £20!)🤦🏼♀️ however, she wandered into the shop randomly two weeks later and asked COULD SHE HAVE HER DEPOSIT BACK!!?@! lololol, I nearly passed out at the gall of this woman, I said "no you can not!" She stormed out never to be seen again, moral of the story, if you let someone take the piss..they'll do it again and again and again!!😩😂😊
Yesss!!! Thank you!! I love stories like this because I dont feel so alone when a client tries to take advantage. THIS IS NOT A FLEA MARKET!! Also Your boss is awesome! I love it when a boss protects their employees, its so rare in this industry.
I always love your client stories! I work in healthcare and I can always relate to them. You hit the nail on the head with this one. You were NEVER going to please this person. In fact as soon as you said she told you her life story at the first meeting including her medical history and "woe is me" tale I knew how this was going to end. These type of people rely on the manipulation of others to get their way. As if everyone around them needs to bow down and cater to their every whim because they have issues. Guaranteed she is used to getting her way with everyone. So I find that if you identify these types of people up front you need to be very firm with them and set clear boundaries otherwise they are constantly trying to "take a mile". Almost like people with borderline personality issues. Most likely if you do set these boundaries with them they will not come back because they want only to deal with people they can easily manipulate. Try not to beat yourself up (although you will because you seem like a person that prides themselves on providing quality service and being thorough). Thanks for sharing because this story can be a teaching tool for others. Stay blessed.
Do you know what kind of people don’t shed- Dead people 🤣😂 I can’t 🤣 you are hilarious! I laughed way to hard at this 😅 I so wish you would have told her that!😂 I love your stories 🥰🤣
Girl you are NOT being rude or complaining! People should be required to work in beauty/retail/food at some point in their lives before they ever cop an attitude with someone who is literally SERVING them. Working with the general public is not a joke. Keep doing you girl you're so sweet!
As someone who's worked booking clients for 10+ years and for 7 years have successfully been booked back to back with regular clients I love and 98% of my new ones lol, I can tell you that this is called growing pains more than a "client horror story". It sucks for sure, but once you learn to harness situations before they turn into "hellish situations" you'll feel like the Queen of the world. The key to a stress-free work life: Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries. Find out what the problem is, assess and figure out a solution and let everyone in on the plan, respectfully. People don't know your world until you tell/teach them. Setting boundaries is such an incredible thing. Clients learn and will stop pushing when they realize you won't budge. You'll get to a point where you have a booked calendar and a waitlist of people ready to fill those advanced canceled spots. Good luck girl. People can suck but when you have your boundaries set you attract people who respect that and you'll build a loyal and quality client list.
Jessica so true! I think client management or how to manage client expectations should be a course in hair school. I had the learn the hard way after a few years behind the chair.
@@ALN-ns4kw Oh for sure, in every business honestly. When someone is paying for a service they need to be given expectations so they don't make up their own. Makes life so much easier for everyone!
I feel your pain - I worked with customers for over 10 years and am also an introvert and hate confrontation but when I would get clients who were demanding I NEVER budged. If anything it made me more resolute in my answer. Only if someone was kind and respectful and willing to follow policy would I give other options. The “customer is always right” mentality boils my blood because it’s made the public so nasty to those who work in the service industry so they can get their way - little do they know, you’ll get more rewards for being kind. I’m sorry you had such a difficult client but at least, as you said, it was a good learning experience. Stand your ground, girl! You got this ;)
Hey sam, not sure if you've done this one, but I'm thinking about getting lash extensions for the holiday season... could you do a what to look for, what to avoid, questions to ask sort video for us, who dont live near you, and are new to it? Thanks!
This is the first video I’ve seen from you. I just wanted to let you know that you are the sweetest person and have more patience than I ever could have.
I felt this! I’m a server and deal with entitled people all the time. Some people expect you to lay a red carpet and almost give your life because they are paying for something.
We like to call the info dump "emotional flashing" because to them they are trying to quickly simulate a bond but to the other person it is uncomfortable and off-putting.
Every time you said “and I’m not complaining” or “I’m not trying to complain” in my head I yelled “IM COMPLAINING ME IM COMPLAINING FOR YOU” lol this is why I’m not in customer service or hair/makeup.
I totally know how you feel about the discount dilemma - but recently I decided to make the other person feel uncomfortable for having the audacity to even ask me to do that!!
I coach gymnastics and I work in the office 20 hours a week. I get people like ’Susan’ who will assume because there having things going on that we have to accommodate and yes depending on the situation we do but to this is to a degree. I will not stay late to do an assessment when I have plans after work because you couldn’t have bothered to call in advance. Im so happy to hear you survived your ‘susan’ and I hope you don’t get to many of those❤️
Don’t take this the wrong way I’m a straight female but this is the second video of yours I’ve seen and I was just taken aback by how beautiful you are your skin looks amazing. I don’t understand when people always bash on dark eyes I think dark eyes can be some of the most beautiful and your eyes are stunning really. And your not pretty in a super obvious super model way but to me natural inside beauty is way better all the way! You clearly take pride in how you like and who you are and it shows. That’s beauty
'Susan' doesn't deserve to get full refund, specially that her lashes looked good when she came to take her money back, you had the evidence that she was lying...
I'm a physiotherapist and I've had patients like that who try to take advantage of my service. Earlier I would stress a lot about them but now I stand my ground firmly. In fact, when a patient once came so late that my shift timings were over, I walked out with my stuff in front of her saying that I need to go I have a personal commitment elsewhere and that someone else who's free that time would be happy to take her in. After that day she always came on time! You should have told Susan that in a way you're already giving her a discount by not slapping the two time cancellation charges. Time is money. You shouldn't feel sorry for someone wasting your valuable time being attention seekers.
I don't even know you, but I am so proud you have learned this difficult lesson. You didn't do anything wrong sweetie. You're an amazing person, and now you have extra time for the kind of clientele that will respect you. Good job, and keep up the good work.
People like her often walk over people all of the time. Once you gave into her the first time, she thought that she could keep getting away with it. You can tell she grew up thinking she’s entitled. So sorry you experienced this.
Girl yes! Build that confidence! It’s taken me years, and I think it comes with age and experience as well. You handled this crazy lady very well. She tried to push you around and take advantage and you stood up for yourself. You don’t need bad clients! ❤️
I FELT this. Girl, I'm over her making a mental note:📝 No one gets a pass, period. 📌 🤣 I'm upset for you. We have a client who comes into our school regularly and has for years. She purposely gives each student a hard time throughout her entire service every time. I have heard her telling other people in clinic that she does it on purpose. She gets a kick out of it. Meanwhile, each student is sweating and uncomfortable with her while performing services. Sadly, I've known many people who behave like this because they enjoy the power they feel they have over you by controlling everything. It's like an added bonus when they get free stuff from it. It validates their behavior in their mind because it's like you're admitting you're wrong and they're right. Sick really if you think about it. But, the takeaway here for sure is that it's not you. Quality over quantity all day. 🙌
@Francesca Taylor our instructors are savages ....towards us! They kiss the client's ass. It's kind of weird. Last week, one of our students was getting real uncomfortable with a client who was talking about thieves and how "you gotta watch the Puerto Ricans around here because they always steal" and the student is actually Puerto Rican. I watched as she got flustered and walked away to calm down then she told our instructor she wasn't comfortable completing the service and did not want the client in the future. Our instructor said "oh well" and "what do you think is gonna happen in the salon? You just have to deal with it". I was appalled honestly. It's not at all professional. Then this same student got a text from her mother stating someone in the family passed away and so she was responding to the text when the instructor confronted her about. The student explained what happened and the instructor responded and said "oh well, I got a text when my mom died but I kept working" I can't even make this up. I'm still flabbergasted just having to tell the story. I WILL get that t-shirt that says "I survived beauty school" when I graduate HAHAHAHA
That's crazy! While I agree, you will definitely deal with some crazy people in the salon, so you don't want to be totally sheltered while you're in school. But you also shouldn't allow people to treat you like garbage. Teachers should ALWAYS stand up for their students and demonstrate the professional way to handle rude/difficult clients.
Oh dang that sounds really tough, and I know I’m shy as well and am working on not being taken advantage of by people. You also aren’t alone cause my classmates also deal with people like this at their part time jobs and my mom deals with people like that at her work too.
People will run over you if you let them. Be firm. Let them know you are the boss. I'm teaching my daughter this now. Sometimes it's hard to stand up for ourselves, but we just gotta do it. If not, they will take full advantage of you...because you let them. You got this😊 Keep practicing.👍
girl! I totally get it. I am also a people pleaser and always uncomfortable with building up a thick skin. I legit looked up where you are located because I feel like we would get along and I love doing my lashes, but im in NY :(. you seem very nice and educated in your field so I wouldn't feel bad about anything at all.
You go girl! I'm so glad you stood your ground. I had a client (who is now fired) that I did a shampoo blow dry on her daughter with a deep conditioner. I also did a complimentary braid on her. She texted me the NEXT DAY, saying that the braid didn't look like the picture, etc. I said unfortunately those styles typing don't last overnight, to which she replied "well I wasn't informed of that. We can do a half refund then." WHAT?!?! I swear we each need to write a book on the craziness of behind the chair
I can literally picture exactly whay you’re talking about in my head. I’ve had the same experiences, it’s so crazy. I totally get what you’re saying when you say “red flags...” Those clients need to get cut out 😭 Makes our job that we love horrible.
Hello from NC🤗 I’m a Lic. Massage Therapist for over 26yrs, I’ve got the best reg clientele, I’m so blessed, but this was bull 💩 I had a nail appt, & my daughter got sick & needed to go the Dr., the next morning I walked in & paid her for the appt, it let’s your hairstylist, massage therapist, etc... know that you value their time & keeps that relationship in a good place. Sending love and prayers on this journey.💜
I have a similar personality type as you (introverted, always trying to be accommodating and hating confrontation) and I swear the people that are like your client can sense when someone is like that and it’s almost like a game for them to see how much they can push you around! I’m glad you stood your ground with the full set and that your boss stood up for you!
Sounds like an overall awful being. Your boss sounds like a great person at least! It is so frustrating dealing with people who think their problems are our problems... sorry but not having a license is your problem lady, not anybody elses
I like videos like this because it makes us hairdressers not feel so alone. If you work in the hair business your going to have a client that is not so nice to you and that you can’t please once in a while. It happens to everyone behind the chair at some point. It also educates the public on things that we really do go through doing hair.
When I get my nails refilled, they charge me something different EVERY TIME. Never, have I ever questioned the price, because I know sometimes my nails are a mess, or I waited too long to come back in, and the process costs money. This was completely manipulative of her and if she can’t afford the upkeep for elective cosmetology, she shouldn’t be booking ANY appointments.
this reminds me of a customer i once had when i worked in retail who aggressively tried to convince me that she doesn't sweat ever. At all. I was 15 years old and kinda got the feeling that she felt really good putting a teenager in her place. That smug look, omg, i will never ever forget.
@@carlgrimeseyepatch27 she wanted a fleecy material that never pills. i tried to explain that fleece can pill from normal wear, because the fibres get tangled when they rub together, or from moisture (the air, wash, perspiration). she said that if it was high quality it should not pill from normal wear, she would never wash it and does not sweat either. i gently tried to say that breathing skin would always release some moisture and she almost had a fit and said hers doesn't 😂 i mean ...
Annemie Opunkt girl you triggered her 😂😂 Should have played along with her delusions of grandeur 😂😂😂 but seriously I didn’t know those facts about moisture causing pilling on fleece when I was 15 so you’re just smarter than most people and I respect ✊🏽
@@carlgrimeseyepatch27 gotta be honest, i did not know if that was a fact either at the time :D but she didn't want to believe that it could happen through normal wear (which it does) and she kind of made me mad with her damn smugness so ... :D
As a teacher i can completely relate when you said it's hard to stand your ground but you don't want the resentment to spoil your job. Teaching high schoolers has really grown me a backbone because accommodating all these kids who are mean and ungrateful rather then holding them accountable and teaching them respect almost ruined my job fight me the first two years. This third year i an true to myself and ask that they respect my rules while i respect them and this has been the most fruitful and fulfilling year so far.
This is THE BEST. I can relate to this story 1939929283% you're so great with how you handle these situations definitely taking notes haha. And by the way you, had me dying with your faces, and her ridiculous concerns haha.
MORAL OF THE STORY: stick to your policy no matter what!!! Even if they’re new, bc it will keep away nightmare clients & keep ones that respect & can adhere to rules!
Cynthia M so true!! And those that are nightmares typically totally take advantage once you are lenient on your policies!
So hard to do these days bc of the internet though, bc if you get a shitty client and you stick to your policy then they will post a bad review causing you to lose clients.
I agree 100% I started to lose count on how many times she said "again this is not our policy"
I kind of blame her for being a doormat.
@@blondiescakeface1555 YES!!!! It sometimes seems that the idiom that 'the customer is always right' allows for a lot of abuse from people who feel entitled 😓😒
I always believed that telling the truth and being up front or sticking to your convictions would naturally weed out the 'undesirables' in any aspect of your life but it seems to come with some real nuclear fall out when it comes to disgruntled customers and social media or even just gossip between clients so I'm glad you pointed out that sometimes it's not always as simple or easy to disentangle yourself without some form of revenge exacted upon you for doing so 😱
Nope Thanks -- Part of it is because people teach people how to treat them.
She wasn’t disappointed. She wanted to keep taking advantage of you. She wanted a free touch up right before her vacation and THATS IT
Yeah. Here’s a thing. Some people sniff out kindness and take it for weakness and will take advantage of anyone they can. It’s just the reality of things unfortunately so we gotta learn how to be kind out in the world and know when to put our foot down.
Pingu Nootson yeah need the right balance

I am sure she was, there are to many of those people who try to take advantange of you, if you let them and are to nice.

Extensions are a luxury not a need. If you can’t afford them don’t get them. I’d love to have extensions and go to the salon every 4-6 weeks to get my hair done but that’s not realistic
Yes same here I wish people would understand that! 😒
this is why I use false lashes from shop miss a they're $1.50 a pair
they also have dollar shipping on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and usually come within a week
Exactly! The necessities are: food. water. shelter. basic clothing. That’s IT
I was about to comment this exactly
It boils my blood that people who are rude and complain get refunds like they're being rewarded for their behavior smh
that's why I can't STAND when managers or companies cater to them. NO!
That’s true customers act like babies and have to have their way 😑
Yesss my manager used to do that.

I've never heard the phrase "fire the customer" before but every business has the right to refuse any client for any reason (or no reason whatsoever).
Exactly! My mom worked at a doctors office in an area where they fired patients every so often.
It’s one of the most liberating and empowering things I’ve ever done!
I'm a hairstylist myself and I wish we had a Yelp review for clients. So we could be forewarned on these clients

Veronica C that’s crazy! I tip 5 dollars for an 8 dollar eye brow threading 😂
I FELT this!!! I’m an esthetician and a lash artist and people never cease to amaze me
Just a bit on the eyes being closed for lash extensions: there’s a salon in Rockford, IL that INSISTS your eyes HAVE to be open to get them done so your eyes don’t get “glued shut”. Plot twist: these women aren’t certified in extensions. Freaked and walked tf out.
What the actual fuck?!?!?!
@@styledbysamvay Yes!!! SEVA in Walmart in Springfield IL requires you to hold a mini fan that blows on your eyes while you have to hold them open!!!! It is $20
Carleigh Jane 😮😮😮 Omg wow
Dang! Rockford is in my neck of the woods
Aw thank you! :)
Bye Felicia! You are so good at what you do. We talked about this today dusting my appointment 😂 just so people know, Sam has been doing my lashes for almost a year and killed it every time. I’ll so grateful for her. Sam I’m so happy for you that you got to say see ya to this client!
Hahahaa yesss girl! thank you! :)
I used to be shy like you, I don't let people take my kindness for weakness anymore, hell know! You go girl! I wish I could have a couple conversations with you. TFS! Good luck! Julie
constructive criticism- i feel like the camera is too close, idk why i feel like it should be zoomed out more 😂 love your vids tho!
It's the lens I use. It zooms in a lot. I have the camera as far away as I can, given the space that I have to film in.
Sam Vay totally understandable!! shoot some vlogs sometime?!
That reply put me off this page. Nothing like thanks.
@@purplesmoothie1725 what??
@@purplesmoothie1725 what are you on about?
Whenever I thought the story was over there was MORE. Sam you have such a gift of patience. Love ya girl!
It would be funny if that client you are talking about watches this video.. Do you think she will even recognize herself?
Hahahaa probably not... and she doesn't have any social media, so I doubt she'll ever see this anyway.
@@styledbysamvay at this point baby who cares lol
People like this don't recognise this kind of issue as their 'problem'. It is everyone elses 'problem'.
Saying my lashes never shed is like saying my nails never grow
Rochelle Murrell thank you so much! I totally agree!!!
I literally had a client in my HOUSE til 3am last night doing her handtied wefts.. IM DONE WITH HAIR RN 😭🤣
Do you know what kind of people don’t shed- Dead people 🤣😂 I can’t 🤣 you are hilarious!
I laughed way to hard at this 😅 I so wish you would have told her that!😂
I love your stories 🥰🤣
Lol I wish I did too! Thank you :)
Girl you are NOT being rude or complaining! People should be required to work in beauty/retail/food at some point in their lives before they ever cop an attitude with someone who is literally SERVING them. Working with the general public is not a joke. Keep doing you girl you're so sweet!
Thank you! I totally agree!
Makes life so much easier for everyone!

you are an ANGEL love, i’m so sorry this woman abused your kindness so much. we need more people like you in this world. keep doing you pretty!
I didn’t have to skip through your story you had me hooked 💗💗
I feel your pain - I worked with customers for over 10 years and am also an introvert and hate confrontation but when I would get clients who were demanding I NEVER budged. If anything it made me more resolute in my answer. Only if someone was kind and respectful and willing to follow policy would I give other options. The “customer is always right” mentality boils my blood because it’s made the public so nasty to those who work in the service industry so they can get their way - little do they know, you’ll get more rewards for being kind. I’m sorry you had such a difficult client but at least, as you said, it was a good learning experience. Stand your ground, girl! You got this ;)
Ugh your skin looks so beautiful!
Thank you!!!
Hey sam, not sure if you've done this one, but I'm thinking about getting lash extensions for the holiday season... could you do a what to look for, what to avoid, questions to ask sort video for us, who dont live near you, and are new to it?
Thanks!
Omg i felt for you! You gave her so many chances she didn't deserve
This is the first video I’ve seen from you. I just wanted to let you know that you are the sweetest person and have more patience than I ever could have.
I felt this! I’m a server and deal with entitled people all the time. Some people expect you to lay a red carpet and almost give your life because they are paying for something.
Yes! Even if they aren't paying full price ;) Lol
We like to call the info dump "emotional flashing" because to them they are trying to quickly simulate a bond but to the other person it is uncomfortable and off-putting.
Honestly so disappointed you didn't call "Susan" "Karen" haha
Gracelyn Granstrom similar vibe - I use both especially in hospitality 😂😂
Maybe her real name IS Karen hahah!
I was gonna say her name might really be karen 😂😂👌🏻☠️
Im so happy to hear you survived your ‘susan’ and I hope you don’t get to many of those❤️
i love your crazy client stories!! i’m a hairstylist and some days clients really try it 😂🙄
Don’t take this the wrong way I’m a straight female but this is the second video of yours I’ve seen and I was just taken aback by how beautiful you are your skin looks amazing.
I love these stories because I am reminded that people like this exist, it baffles me how much entitlement some people have. Soooo crazy!
I'm upset for you. 🙌
@Francesca Taylor I wish she would too 😂 Would love to see the look on her face 😯🤣
The student explained what happened and the instructor responded and said "oh well, I got a text when my mom died but I kept working"
I can't even make this up.

Omg!!!! The lack of common sense is astounding!! I'm glad you fired her.
I would’ve been like “Susan I’m dropping you as a client you whine too much, bye”
Exactly!
Annemie Opunkt I wanna know why she aggressively needed to convince you of this?!
